Yang-Mills correlation functions at finite temperature

We put forward a continuum approach for computing finite temperature correlation functions in Yang-Mills theory. This is done in a functional renormalisation group setting which allows for the construction of purely thermal RG-flows. This approach is applied to the ghost and gluon propagators as well as the ghost-gluon vertex in the Landau gauge. We present results in a temperature regime going from vanishing temperature to temperatures far above the confinement-deconfinement temperature Tc. Our findings compare well with the lattice results available.

Color Coulomb Potential in Yang-Mills Theory from Hamiltonian Flows

We consider the Hamiltonian formulation of Yang-Mills theory in the Coulomb gauge and apply the recently developed technique of Hamiltonian flows. We formulate a flow equation for the color Coulomb potential which allows for a scaling solution that results in an almost linearly rising confining potential.

Gluon condensation and scaling exponents for the propagators in Yang-Mills theory

We investigate the infrared (strong-coupling) regime of SU(N)-Yang-Mills theory on a self-dual background. We present an evaluation of the full effective potential for the field strength invariant F_{μν}F^{μν} from non-perturbative gauge correlation functions and find a non-trivial minimum corresponding to the existence of a dimension four gluon condensate in the vacuum. We also relate the infrared asymptotic form of the beta function of the running background-gauge coupling to the asymptotic behavior of Landau-gauge gluon and ghost propagators. Consistency between both gauges in the infrared imposes a new upper bound on the infrared exponents of the propagators. For the scaling solution, this bound reads kappa_c < 23/38 which, together with Zwanziger's horizon condition kappa_c> 1/2, defines a rather narrow window for this critical exponent. Current estimates from functional methods indeed satisfy these bounds.

The QCD phase diagram: Results and challenges

I review the progress made in recent years with functional methods in our understanding of the QCD phase diagram. In particular I discuss a renormalisation group approach to QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential. Results include the location of the confinement-deconfinement phase transition/cross-over and the chiral phase transition/cross-over lines, their nature as well as their interrelation.

On the QCD phase diagram at finite chemical potential

We present results for the phase diagram of QCD with two massless quark flavours as obtained from a first-principles functional renormalisation group approach. In particular we compute order parameters for chiral symmetry breaking and quark confinement at vanishing and non-zero imaginary chemical potential. Our analytical and numerical results suggest a close relation between the chiral and the deconfinement phase transition. We discuss the properties of dual order parameters at imaginary and real chemical potential.

Exact renormalization group and Phi-derivable approximations

We show that the so-called Phi-derivable approximations can be combined with the exact renormalization group to provide efficient non-perturbative approximation schemes. On the one hand, the Phi-derivable approximations allow for a simple truncation of the infinite hierarchy of the renormalization group flow equations. On the other hand, the flow equations turn the non linear equations that derive from the Phi-derivable approximations into an initial value problem, offering new practical ways to solve these equations.

Hamiltonian Flow of Yang-Mills Theory in Coulomb Gauge

A new functional renormalization group equation for Hamiltonian Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge is presented and solved for the static gluon and ghost propagators under the assumption of ghost dominance. The results are compared to those obtained in the variational approach.

The phase structure of the Polyakov--quark-meson model beyond mean field

The Polyakov-extended quark-meson model (PQM) is investigated beyond mean-field. This represents an important step towards a fully dynamical QCD computation. Both the quantum fluctuations to the matter sector and the back-reaction of the matter fluctuations to the QCD Yang-Mills sector are included. Results on the chiral and confinement-deconfinement crossover/phase transition lines and the location of a possible critical endpoint are presented. Moreover, thermodynamic quantities such as the pressure and the quark density are discussed.

On the Nature of the Phase Transition in SU(N), Sp(2) and E(7) Yang-Mills theory

We study the nature of the confinement phase transition in d=3+1 dimensions in various non-abelian gauge theories with the approach put forward in [1]. We compute an order-parameter potential associated with the Polyakov loop from the knowledge of full 2-point correlation functions. For SU(N) with N=3,...,12 and Sp(2) we find a first-order phase transition in agreement with general expectations. Moreover our study suggests that the phase transition in E(7) Yang-Mills theory also is of first order. We find that it is weaker than for SU(N). We show that this can be understood in terms of the eigenvalue distribution of the order parameter potential close to the phase transition.

Hamiltonian Flow in Coulomb Gauge Yang-Mills Theory

We derive a new functional renormalization group equation for Hamiltonian Yang-Mills theory in Coulomb gauge. The flow equations for the static gluon and ghost propagators are solved under the assumption of ghost dominance within different diagrammatic approximations. The results are compared to those obtained in the variational approach and the reliability of the approximations is discussed.

Strong-coupling study of the Gribov ambiguity in lattice Landau gauge

We study the strong-coupling limit beta=0 of lattice SU(2) Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory. In this limit the lattice spacing is infinite, and thus all momenta in physical units are infinitesimally small. Hence, the infrared behavior can be assessed at sufficiently large lattice momenta. Our results show that at the lattice volumes used here, the Gribov ambiguity has an enormous effect on the ghost propagator in all dimensions. This underlines the severity of the Gribov problem and calls for refined studies also at finite beta. In turn, the gluon propagator only mildly depends on the Gribov ambiguity.

Far-from-equilibrium quantum many-body dynamics

The theory of real-time quantum many-body dynamics as put forward in Ref. [arXiv:0710.4627] is evaluated in detail. The formulation is based on a generating functional of correlation functions where the Keldysh contour is closed at a given time. Extending the Keldysh contour from this time to a later time leads to a dynamic flow of the generating functional. This flow describes the dynamics of the system and has an explicit causal structure. In the present work it is evaluated within a vertex expansion of the effective action leading to time evolution equations for Green functions. These equations are applicable for strongly interacting systems as well as for studying the late-time behaviour of nonequilibrium time evolution. For the specific case of a bosonic N-component phi^4 theory with contact interactions an s-channel truncation is identified to yield equations identical to those derived from the 2PI effective action in next-to-leading order of a 1/N expansion. The presented approach allows to directly obtain non-perturbative dynamic equations beyond the widely used 2PI approximations.

Quark Confinement from Color Confinement

We relate quark confinement, as measured by the Polyakov-loop order parameter, to color confinement, as described by the Kugo-Ojima/Gribov-Zwanziger scenario. We identify a simple criterion for quark confinement based on the IR behaviour of ghost and gluon propagators, and compute the order-parameter potential from the knowledge of Landau-gauge correlation functions with the aid of the functional RG. Our approach predicts the deconfinement transition in quenched QCD to be of first order for SU(3) and second order for SU(2) -- in agreement with general expectations. As an estimate for the critical temperature, we obtain T_c=284MeV for SU(3).

Lattice Landau gauge with stochastic quantisation

We calculate Landau gauge ghost and gluon propagators in pure SU(2) lattice gauge theory in two, three and four dimensions. The gauge fixing method we use, sc. stochastic quantisation, serves as a viable alternative approach to standard gauge fixing algorithms. We also investigate the spectrum of the Faddeev-Popov operator. At insufficiently accurate gauge fixing, we find evidence that stochastic quantisation samples configurations close to the Gribov horizon. Standard gauge fixing does so only at specific parameters; otherwise, there is a clear difference. However, this difference disappears if the gauge is fixed to sufficient accuracy. In this case, we confirm previous lattice results for the gluon and ghost propagator in two, three and four dimensions.

CP invariance of chiral gauge theories and Majorana-Yukawa couplings on the lattice

The construction of CP-invariant lattice chiral gauge theories and the construction of lattice Majorana fermions with chiral Yukawa couplings is subject to topological obstructions. In the present work we suggest lattice extensions of charge and parity transformation for Weyl fermions. This enables us to construct lattice chiral gauge theories that are CP invariant. For the construction of Majorana-Yukawa couplings, we discuss two models with symplectic Majorana fermions: a model with two symplectic doublets, and one with an auxiliary doublet.

On the relation of quark confinement and chiral symmetry breaking

We study the phase diagram of QCD with the help of order parameters for chiral symmetry breaking and quark confinement. We also introduce a new order parameter for the confinement phase transition, which is related to the quark density. It is easily accessible by different theoretical approaches, such as functional approaches or lattice simulations. Its relation to the Polyakov loop expectation value is discussed and the QCD phase diagram is analysed. Our results suggest a close relation between the chiral and the confinement phase transition.

On the infrared behavior of Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory

We discuss the properties of ghost and gluon propagators in the deep infrared momentum region of Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory. Within the framework of Dyson-Schwinger equations and the functional renormalization group we demonstrate that it is only a matter of infrared boundary conditions whether infrared scaling or decoupling occurs. We argue that the second possibility is at odds with global BRST symmetry in the confining phase. For this purpose we improve upon existing truncation schemes in particular with respect to transversality and renormalization.
