Majorana fermions and CP-invariance of chiral gauge theories on the lattice

The construction of massless Majorana fermions with chiral Yukawa couplings on the lattice is considered. We find topological obstructions tightly linked to those underlying the Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem. In contradistinction to chiral fermions the obstructions originate only from the combination of the Dirac action and the Yukawa term. These findings are used to construct a chirally invariant lattice action. We also show that the path integral of this theory is given by the Pfaffian of the corresponding Dirac operator. As an application of the approach set-up here we construct a CP-invariant lattice action of a chiral gauge theory, based on a lattice adaptation of charge conjugation and parity transformation in the continuum.

Uniqueness of infrared asymptotics in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory II

We present a shortened and simplified version of our proof \cite{Fischer:2006vf} of the uniqueness of the scaling solution for the infrared asymptotics of Green functions in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory. The simplification relates to a new RG-invariant arrangement of Green functions applicable to general theories. As before the proof relies on the necessary consistency between Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs) and functional renormalisation group equations (FRGs). We also demonstrate the existence of a specific scaling solution for both, DSEs and FRGs, that displays uniform and soft kinematic singularities.

Aspects of confinement from QCD correlation functions

We discuss the properties of ghost and gluon propagators in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory and their relation to the confinement problem. In general two types of infrared behavior of these functions are allowed from their functional equations: scaling and decoupling. Both solutions show positivity violations in the gluon propagator and lead to a confining Polyakov loop potential. However, only the scaling solution agrees with the Kugo-Ojima confinement scenario and the related formulation of a physical Hilbert space of Yang-Mills theory. Our numerical results for the gluon dressing function agree almost pointwise with the lattice results at all physical momenta.

Confinement in Polyakov Gauge

We approach the non-perturbative regime in finite temperature QCD within a formulation in Polyakov gauge. The construction is based on a complete gauge fixing. Correlation functions are then computed from Wilsonian renormalisation group flows. First results for the confinement-deconfinement phase transition for SU(2) are presented. Within a simple approximation we obtain a second order phase transition within the Ising universality class. The critical temperature is computed as T_c = 305 MeV.

On the Yang-Mills two-loop effective action with wordline methods

We derive the two-loop effective action for covariantly constant field strength of pure Yang-Mills theory in the presence of an infrared scale. The computation is done in the framework of the worldline formalism, based on a generalization procedure of constructing multiloop effective actions in terms of the bosonic worldline path integral. The two-loop beta-function is correctly reproduced. This is the first derivation in the worldline formulation, and serves as a nontrivial check on the consistency of the multiloop generalization procedure in the worldline formalism.

Functional renormalisation group approach to far-from-equilibrium quantum field dynamics

Dynamic equations for quantum fields far from equilibrium are derived by use of functional renormalisation group techniques. The obtained equations are non-perturbative and lead substantially beyond mean-field and quantum Boltzmann type approximations. The approach is based on a regularised version of the generating functional for correlation functions where times greater than a chosen cutoff time are suppressed. As a central result, a time evolution equation for the non-equilibrium effective action is derived, and the time-evolution of the Green functions is computed within a vertex expansion. It is shown that this agrees with the dynamics derived from the 1/N-expansion of the two-particle irreducible effective action.

Generalising the Ginsparg-Wilson relation: Lattice Supersymmetry from Blocking Transformations

The Ginsparg-Wilson relation is extended to interacting field theories with general linear symmetries. Our relation encodes the remnant of the original symmetry in terms of the blocked fields and guides the construction of invariant lattice actions. We apply this approach in the case of lattice supersymmetry. An additional constraint has to be satisfied because of the appearance of a derivative operator in the symmetry transformations. The solution of this constraint leads to non-local SLAC-type derivatives. We investigate the corresponding kinetic operators on the lattice within an exact solution of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. These solutions - analogues of the overlap operator for supersymmetry - can be made local through a specific choice of the blocking kernel. We show that the corresponding relation allows for local lattice symmetry operators as well as local lattice actions. We argue that for interacting theories the lattice action is polynomial in the fields only under special circumstances, which is exemplified within an exact solution.

Generalisations of the Ginsparg-Wilson relation and a remnant of supersymmetry on the lattice

We introduce a lattice symmetry relation for field theories with general linear symmetries. For chiral symmetry the well-known Ginsparg-Wilson relation is reproduced. The new relation encodes the remnant of the original symmetry on the lattice and guides the construction of invariant lattice actions. We apply this approach to lattice supersymmetry. There, an additional constraint has to be satisfied which originates in the derivative operator in the symmetry transformations. As a consequence the non-local SLAC derivative operator appears in the lattice transformation. Despite this non-local form we show how local solutions for quadratic actions can be found. For interacting theories the relation in general leads to a non-polynomial action that can be reduced to a finite polynomial order only under certain conditions.

The Phase Structure of the Polyakov--Quark-Meson Model

The relation between the deconfinement and chiral phase transition is explored in the framework of an Polyakov-loop-extended two-flavor quark-meson (PQM) model. In this model the Polyakov loop dynamics is represented by a background temporal gauge field which also couples to the quarks. As a novelty an explicit quark chemical potential and N_f-dependence in the Polyakov loop potential is proposed by using renormalization group arguments. The behavior of the Polyakov loop as well as the chiral condensate as function of temperature and quark chemical potential is obtained by minimizing the grand canonical thermodynamic potential of the system. The effect of the Polyakov loop dynamics on the chiral phase diagram and on several thermodynamic bulk quantities is presented.

Large volume behavior of Yang-Mills propagators

We summarize results on finite-volume effects in the propagators of Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory using Dyson-Schwinger equations on a 4-dimensional torus. We demonstrate explicitly how the solutions for the gluon and the ghost propagator tend towards their respective infinite volume forms in the corresponding limit. We discuss the relation of our solutions with results from lattice Monte-Carlo simulations.

Large volume behaviour of Yang-Mills propagators

We investigate finite volume effects in the propagators of Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory using Dyson-Schwinger equations on a 4-dimensional torus. In particular, we demonstrate explicitly how the solutions for the gluon and the ghost propagator tend towards their respective infinite volume forms in the corresponding limit. This solves an important open problem of previous studies where the infinite volume limit led to an apparent mismatch, especially of the infrared behaviour, between torus extrapolations and the existing infinite volume solutions obtained in 4-dimensional Euclidean space-time. However, the correct infinite volume limit is approached rather slowly. The typical scales necessary to see the onset of the leading infrared behaviour emerging already imply volumes of at least 10 to 15 fm in lengths. To reliably extract the infrared exponents of the infinite volume solutions requires even much larger ones. While the volumes in the Monte-Carlo simulations available at present are far too small to facilitate that, we obtain a good qualitative agreement of our torus solutions with recent lattice data in comparable volumes.

Non-perturbative thermal flows and resummations

We construct a functional renormalisation group for thermal fluctuations. Thermal resummations are naturally built in, and the infrared problem of thermal fluctuations is well under control. The viability of the approach is exemplified for thermal scalar field theories. In gauge theories the present setting allows for the construction of a gauge-invariant thermal renormalisation group.

Uniqueness of infrared asymptotics in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory

We uniquely determine the infrared asymptotics of Green functions in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory. They have to satisfy both, Dyson-Schwinger equations and functional renormalisation group equations. Then, consistency fixes the relation between the infrared power laws of these Green functions. We discuss consequences for the interpretation of recent results from lattice QCD.

Do Instantons Like a Colorful Background?

We investigate chiral symmetry breaking and color symmetry breaking in QCD. The effective potential of the corresponding scalar condensates is discussed in the presence of non-perturbative contributions from the semiclassical one-instanton sector. We concentrate on a color singlet scalar background which can describe chiral condensation, as well as a color octet scalar background which can generate mass for the gluons. Whereas a non-vanishing singlet chiral field is favored by the instantons, we have found no indication for a preference of color octet backgrounds.

Aspects of the Functional Renormalisation Group

We discuss structural aspects of the functional renormalisation group. Flows for a general class of correlation functions are derived, and it is shown how symmetry relations of the underlying theory are lifted to the regularised theory. A simple equation for the flow of these relations is provided. The setting includes general flows in the presence of composite operators and their relation to standard flows, an important example being NPI quantities. We discuss optimisation and derive a functional optimisation criterion. Applications deal with the interrelation between functional flows and the quantum equations of motion, general Dyson-Schwinger equations. We discuss the combined use of these functional equations as well as outlining the construction of practical renormalisation schemes, also valid in the presence of composite operators. Furthermore, the formalism is used to derive various representations of modified symmetry relations in gauge theories, as well as to discuss gauge-invariant flows. We close with the construction and analysis of truncation schemes in view of practical optimisation.

Convexity of the effective action from functional flows

We show that convexity of the effective action follows from its functional flow equation. Our analysis is based on a new, spectral representation. The results are relevant for the study of physical instabilities. We also derive constraints for convexity-preserving regulators within general truncation schemes including proper-time flows, and bounds for infrared anomalous dimensions of propagators.

Doubly Periodic Instanton Zero Modes

Fermionic zero modes associated with doubly periodic SU(2) instantons of unit charge are considered. In cases where the action density exhibits two `instanton cores' the zero mode peaks on one of four line-segments joining the two constituents. Which of the four possibilities is realised depends on the fermionic boundary conditions; doubly periodic, doubly anti-periodic or mixed.
