Singular limits for the two-phase Stefan problem

We prove strong convergence to singular limits for a linearized fully inhomogeneous Stefan problem subject to surface tension and kinetic undercooling effects. Different combinations of $σ\to σ_0$ and $δ\toδ_0$, where $σ,σ_0 \ge 0$ and $δ,δ_0 \ge 0$ denote surface tension and kinetic undercooling coefficients respectively, altogether lead to five different types of singular limits. Their strong convergence is based on uniform maximal regularity estimates.

On the qualitative behavior of incompressible two-phase flows with phase transitions: the case of equal densities

The study of the basic model for incompressible two-phase flows with phase transitions in the case of equal densities, initiated in the paper Prüss, Shibata, Shimizu, and Simonett [16], is continued here with a stability analysis of equilibria and results on the asymptotic behavior of global solutions. The results parallel those for the thermodynamically consistent Stefan problem with surface tension obtained in Prüss, Simonett, and Zacher [19].

On well-posedness of incompressible two-phase flows with phase transitions: the case of equal densities

The basic model for incompressible two-phase flows with phase transitions is derived from basic principles and shown to be thermodynamically consistent in the sense that the total energy is conserved and the total entropy is nondecreasing. The local well-posedness of such problems is proved by means of the technique of maximal $L_p$-regularity in the case of equal densities. This way we obtain a local semiflow on a well-defined nonlinear state manifold. The equilibria of the system in absence of external forces are identified and it is shown that the negative total entropy is a strict Ljapunov functional for the system. If a solution does not develop singularities, it is proved that it exists globally in time, its orbit is relatively compact, and its limit set is nonempty and contained in the set of equilibria.

Qualitative Behaviour of Solutions for the Two-Phase Navier-Stokes Equations with Surface Tension

The two-phase free boundary value problem for the isothermal Navier-Stokes system is studied for general bounded geometries in absence of phase transitions, external forces and boundary contacts. It is shown that the problem is well-posed in an Lp-setting, and that it generates a local semiflow on the induced phase manifold. If the phases are connected, the set of equilibria of the system forms a (n+1)-dimensional manifold, each equilibrium is stable, and it is shown that global solutions which do not develop singularities converge to an equilibrium as time goes to infinity. The latter is proved by means of the energy functional combined with the generalized principle of linearized stability.

On conserved Penrose-Fife type models

In this paper we investigate quasilinear parabolic systems of conserved Penrose-Fife type. We show maximal $L_p$ - regularity for this problem with inhomogeneous boundary data. Furthermore we prove global existence of a solution, provided that the absolute temperature is bounded from below and above. Moreover, we apply the Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality to establish the convergence of solutions to a steady state as time tends to infinity.

On quasilinear parabolic evolution equations in weighted $L_p$-spaces

In this paper we develop a geometric theory for quasilinear parabolic problems in weighted $L_p$-spaces. We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions as well as the continuous dependence on the initial data. Moreover, we make use of a regularization effect for quasilinear parabolic equations to study the $\om$-limit sets and the long-time behaviour of the solutions. These techniques are applied to a free boundary value problem. The results in this paper are mainly based on maximal regularity tools in (weighted) $L_p$-spaces.

On the two-phase Navier-Stokes equations with surface tension

The two-phase free boundary problem for the Navier-Stokes system is considered in a situation where the initial interface is close to a halfplane. By means of $L_p$-maximal regularity of the underlying linear problem we show local well-posedness of the problem, and prove that the solution, in particular the interface, becomes instantaneously real analytic.

Analytic solutions for the two-phase Navier-Stokes equations with surface tension and gravity

We consider the motion of two superposed immiscible, viscous, incompressible, capillary fluids that are separated by a sharp interface which needs to be determined as part of the problem. Allowing for gravity to act on the fluids, we prove local well-posedness of the problem. In particular, we obtain well-posedness for the case where the heavy fluid lies on top of the light one, that is, for the case where the Rayleigh-Taylor instability is present. Additionally we show that solutions become real analytic instantaneously.

On the Rayleigh-Taylor Instability for the two-Phase Navier-Stokes Equations

The two-phase free boundary problem with surface tension and downforce gravity for the Navier-Stokes system is considered in a situation where the initial interface is close to equilibrium. The boundary symbol of this problem admits zeros in the unstable halfplane in case the heavy fluid is on top of the light one, which leads to the well-known Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Instability is proved rigorously in an $L_p$-setting by means of an abstract instability result due to Henry.

On normal stability for nonlinear parabolic equations

We show convergence of solutions to equilibria for quasilinear and fully nonlinear parabolic evolution equations in situations where the set of equilibria is non-discrete, but forms a finite-dimensional $C^1$-manifold which is normally stable.

On convergence of solutions to equilibria for quasilinear parabolic problems

We show convergence of solutions to equilibria for quasilinear parabolic evolution equations in situations where the set of equilibria is non-discrete, but forms a finite-dimensional $C^1$-manifold which is normally hyperbolic. Our results do not depend on the presence of an appropriate Lyapunov functional as in the Łojasiewicz-Simon approach, but are of local nature.

Analysis of a model for the dynamics of prions II

A new mathematical model for the dynamics of prion proliferation involving an ordinary differential equation coupled with a partial integro-differential equation is analyzed, continuing earlier work. We show the well-posedness of this problem in a natural phase space, i.e. there is a unique global semiflow in the phase space associated to the problem. A theorem of threshold type is derived for this model which is typical for mathematical epidemics. If a certain combination of kinetic parameters is below or at the threshold, there is a unique steady state, the disease-free equilibrium, which is globally asymptotically stable; above the threshold it is unstable, and there is another unique steady state, the disease equilibrium, which inherits that property.
