Kaon photoproduction from the deuteron in a Regge-plus-resonance approach

We present a Regge-inspired effective-Lagrangian framework for kaon photoproduction from the deuteron. Quasi-free kaon production is investigated using the Regge-plus-resonance (RPR) elementary operator within the relativistic plane-wave impulse approximation. The RPR model was developed to describe photoinduced and electroinduced charged-kaon production off protons. We show how this elementary operator can be transformed in order to account for the production of neutral kaons from both protons and neutrons. The model results for kaon photoproduction from the deuteron compare favourably to the 2H(g,K)YN data published to date.

Mass dependence of short-range correlations in nuclei and the EMC effect

An approximate method to quantify the mass dependence of the number of two-nucleon (2N) short-range correlations (SRC) in nuclei is suggested. The proposed method relies on the concept of the "local nuclear character" of the SRC. We quantify the SRC and its mass dependence by computing the number of independent-particle model (IPM) nucleon pairs in a zero relative orbital momentum state. We find that the relative probability per nucleon for 2N SRC follows a power law as a function of the mass number $A$. The predictions are connected to measurements which provide access to the mass dependence of SRC. First, the ratio of the inclusive inelastic electron scattering cross sections of nuclei to $^{2}$H at large values of the Bjorken variable. Second, the EMC effect, for which we find a linear relationship between its magnitude and the predicted number of SRC-prone pairs.

Counting the number of correlated pairs in a nucleus

We suggest that the number of correlated nucleon pairs in an arbitrary nucleus can be estimated by counting the number of proton-neutron, proton-proton, and neutron-neutron pairs residing in a relative $S$ state. We present numerical calculations of those amounts for the nuclei $^{4}$He, $^{9}$Be, $ ^{12}$C, $ ^{27}$Al, $ ^{40}$Ca, $ ^{48}$Ca, $ ^{56}$Fe, $ ^{63}$Cu, $ ^{108}$Ag, and $ ^{197}$Au. The results are used to predict the values of the ratios of the per-nucleon electron-nucleus inelastic scattering cross section to the deuteron in the kinematic regime where correlations dominate.

Quantifying short-range correlations in nuclei

An approximate method to quantify the magnitude of the two-nucleon (2N) and three-nucleon (3N) short-range correlations (SRC) and their mass dependence is proposed. The proposed method relies on the concept of the "universality" or "local nuclear character" of the SRC. We quantify the SRC by computing the number of independent-particle model (IPM) nucleon pairs and triples which reveal beyond-mean-field behavior. It is argued that those can be identified by counting the number of nucleon pairs and triples in a zero relative orbital momentum state. A method to determine the quantum numbers of pairs and triples in an arbitrary mean-field basis is outlined. The mass dependence of the 2N and 3N SRC is studied. The predictions are compared to measurements. This includes the ratio of the inclusive inelastic electron scattering cross sections of nuclei to 2H and 3He at large values of the Bjorken variable. Corrections stemming from the center-of-mass motion of the pairs are estimated. We find that the relative probability per nucleon for 2N and 3N SRC has a soft dependence with mass number A and that the proton-neutron 2N SRC outnumber the proton-proton (neutron-neutron) 2N SRC. A linear relationship between the magnitude of the EMC effect and the predicted number of proton-neutron SRC pairs is observed. This provides support for the role of local nuclear dynamics on the EMC effect.

Bayesian inference of the resonance content of p(gamma,K+)Lambda

A Bayesian analysis of the world's p(gamma,K+)Lambda data is presented. We adopt a Regge-plus-resonance framework featuring consistent couplings for nucleon resonances up to spin J=5/2, and evaluate 2048 model variants considering all possible combinations of 11 candidate resonances. The best model, labeled RPR-2011, is discussed with special emphasis on nucleon resonances in the 1900-MeV mass region.

A Bayesian analysis of kaon photoproduction with the Regge-plus-resonance model

We address the issue of unbiased model selection and propose a methodology based on Bayesian inference to extract physical information from kaon photoproduction $p(γ,K^+)Λ$ data. We use the single-channel Regge-plus-resonance (RPR) framework for $p(γ,K^+)Λ$ to illustrate the proposed strategy. The Bayesian evidence Z is a quantitative measure for the model's fitness given the world's data. We present a numerical method for performing the multidimensional integrals in the expression for the Bayesian evidence. We use the $p(γ,K^+)Λ$ data with an invariant energy W > 2.6 GeV in order to constrain the background contributions in the RPR framework with Bayesian inference. Next, the resonance information is extracted from the analysis of differential cross sections, single and double polarization observables. This background and resonance content constitutes the basis of a model which is coined RPR-2011. It is shown that RPR-2011 yields a comprehensive account of the kaon photoproduction data and provides reasonable predictions for $p(e,e' K^+)Λ$ observables.

Bayesian inference of the resonance content of p(gamma,K^+)Lambda

A Bayesian analysis of the world's p(gamma,K^+)Lambda data is presented. From the proposed selection of 11 resonances, we find that the following nucleon resonances have the highest probability of contributing to the reaction: S11(1535), S11(1650), F15(1680), P13(1720), D13(1900), P13(1900), P11(1900), and F15(2000). We adopt a Regge-plus-resonance framework featuring consistent couplings for nucleon resonances up to spin J=5/2. We evaluate all possible combinations of 11 candidate resonances. The best model is selected from the 2048 model variants by calculating the Bayesian evidence values against the world's p(gamma,K^+)Lambda data.

A doubly-periodic structure for the study of inhomogeneous bulk fermion matter with spatial localizations

We present a method that offers perspectives to perform fully antisymmetrized simulations for inhomogeneous bulk fermion matter. The technique bears resemblance to classical periodic boundary conditions, using localized single-particle states. Such localized states are an ideal tool to discuss phenomena where spatial localization plays an important role. The antisymmetrisation is obtained introducing a doubly-periodic structure in the many-body fermion wave functions. This results in circulant matrices for the evaluation of expectation values, leading to a computationally tractable formalism to study fully antisymmetrized bulk fermion matter. We show that the proposed technique is able to reproduce essential fermion features in an elegant and computationally advantageous manner.

Consistent interactions for high-spin fermion fields

We address the issue of consistent interactions for off-shell fermion fields of arbitrary spin. These interactions play a crucial role in the quantum hadrodynamical description of high-spin baryon resonances in hadronic processes. The Rarita-Schwinger description of high-spin fermion fields involves unphysical degrees of freedom, associated with their lower-spin content. These enter the interaction if not eliminated outright. The invariance condition of the interaction under the unconstrained Rarita-Schwinger gauge removes the lower-spin content of the fermion propagator and leads to a consistent description of the interaction. We develop the most general, consistent interaction structure for high-spin fermions. We find that the power of the momentum dependence of a consistent interaction rises with the spin of the fermion field. This leads to unphysical structures in the energy dependence of the computed cross sections when the short-distance physics is cut off with standard hadronic form factors. A novel, spin-dependent hadronic form factor is proposed that suppresses the unphysical artifacts.

Consistent interactions for high-spin baryons

Consistent interactions for off-shell fermion fields of arbitrary spin are constructed from the gauge-invariance requirement of the interaction Lagrangians. These interactions play a crucial role in the quantum hadrodynamical description of high-spin baryon resonances in hadronic processes. We find that the power of the momentum dependence of a consistent interaction rises with the spin of the fermion field. This leads to unphysical structures in the energy dependence of the computed tree-level cross sections when the short-distance physics is cut off with standard hadronic form factors. A novel, spin-dependent hadronic form factor is proposed that suppresses the unphysical artifacts.

What densities can be effectively probed in quasifree single-nucleon knockout reactions?

We address the issue whether quasifree single-nucleon knockout measurements carry sufficient information about the nuclear interior. To this end, we present comparisons of the reaction probability densities for $A(e,e'p)$ and $A(p,2p)$ in quasifree kinematics for the target nuclei $^{4}$He, $^{12}$C, $^{56}$Fe, and $^{208}$Pb. We adopt a comprehensive framework based on the impulse approximation and on a relativized extension of Glauber multiple-scattering reaction theory in which the medium effects related to short-range correlations (SRC) are implemented. It is demonstrated that SRC weaken the effect of attenuation. For light target nuclei, both the quasifree $(p,2p)$ and $(e,e'p)$ can probe average densities of the same order as nuclear saturation density $ρ_{0}$. For heavy nuclei like $^{208}$Pb, the probed average densities are smaller than $0.1ρ_{0}$ and the $(e,e'p)$ reaction is far more efficient in probing the bulk regions than $(p,2p)$.

Towards a quantal dynamical simulation of the neutron-star crust

We present a novel method to study the dynamics of bulk fermion systems such as the neutron-star crust. By introducing periodic boundary conditions into Fermionic Molecular Dynamics, it becomes possible to examine the long-range many-body correlations induced by antisymmetrisation in bulk fermion systems. The presented technique treats the spins and the fermionic nature of the nucleons explicitly and permits investigating the dynamics of the system. Despite the increased complexity related to the periodic boundary conditions, the proposed formalism remains computationally feasible.

Modeling final-state interactions with a relativistic multiple-scattering approximation

We address the issue of nuclear attenuation in nucleon and pion knockout reactions. A selection of results from a model based on a relativistic multiple-scattering approximation is presented. We show transparency calculations for pion electroproduction on several nuclei, where data are in very good agreement with calculations including color transparency. Secondly, we discuss the density dependence of reactions involving one or double proton knockout. The latter reaction succeeds in probing the high density regions in the deep interior of the nucleus.

Creating conditions of anomalous self-diffusion in a liquid with molecular dynamics

We propose a computational method to simulate anomalous self-diffusion in a simple liquid. The method is based on a molecular dynamics simulation on which we impose the following two conditions: firstly, the inter-particle interaction is described by a soft-core potential and secondly, the system is forced out of equilibrium. The latter can be achieved by subjecting the system to changes in the length scale at intermittent times. In many respects, our simulation system bears resemblance to slowly driven sandpile models displaying self-organised criticality. We find non-Gaussian single time step displacement distributions during the out-of-equilibrium time periods of the simulation.

Regge-plus-resonance predictions for charged-kaon photoproduction from the deuteron

We present a Regge-inspired effective-Lagrangian framework for charged-kaon photoproduction from the deuteron. Quasi-free kaon production is investigated using the Regge-plus-resonance elementary operator within the non-relativistic plane-wave impulse approximation. The Regge-plus-resonance model was developed to describe photoinduced and electroinduced kaon production off protons and can be extended to strangeness production off neutrons. The non-resonant contributions to the amplitude are modelled in terms of K+(494) and K*+(892) Regge-trajectory exchange in the t-channel. This amplitude is supplemented with a selection of s-channel resonance-exchange diagrams. We investigate several sources of theoretical uncertainties on the semi-inclusive charged-kaon production cross section. The experimental error bars on the photocoupling helicity amplitudes turn out to put severe limits on the predictive power when considering quasi-free kaon production on a bound neutron.

Regge-model predictions for K+Sigma photoproduction from the nucleon

We present Regge-model predictions for the p(gamma,K+)Sigma0 and n(gamma,K+)Sigma- differential cross sections and photon-beam asymmetries in the resonance region. The reaction amplitude encompasses the exchange of K+(494) and K*+(892) Regge-trajectories, introducing a mere three free parameters. These are fitted to the available p(gamma,K+)Sigma0 data beyond the resonance region. The n(gamma,K+)Sigma- amplitude is obtained from the p(gamma,K+)Sigma0 one through SU(2) isospin symmetry considerations.

On the density dependence of single-proton and two-proton knockout reactions under quasifree conditions

We consider high-energy quasifree single- and two-proton knockout reactions induced by electrons and protons and address the question what target-nucleus densities can be effectively probed after correcting for nuclear attenuation (initial- and final-state interactions). Our calculations refer to ejected proton kinetic energies of 1.5 GeV, the reactions (e,e'p), (γ,pp) and (p,2p) and a carbon target. It is shown that each of the three reactions is characterized by a distinctive sensitivity to the density of the target nucleus. The bulk of the (γ,pp) strength stems from the high-density regions in the deep nuclear interior. Despite the strong attenuation, sizable densities can be probed by (p,2p) provided that the energy resolution allows one to pick nucleons from s orbits. The effective mean densities that can be probed in high-energy (e,e'p) are of the order of 30-50% of the nuclear saturation density.
