Quark--hadron duality in lepton scattering off nuclei

A phenomenological study of quark--hadron duality in electron and neutrino scattering on nuclei is performed. We compute the structure functions $F_2$ and $xF_3$ in the resonance region within a framework that includes the Dortmund-group model for the production of the {f}{i}rst four lowest-lying baryonic resonances and a relativistic mean-field model for nuclei. We consider four-momentum transfers between 0.2 and 2.5 GeV$^2$. The results indicate that nuclear effects play a different role in the resonance and DIS region. We find that global but not local duality works well. In the studied range of four-momentum transfers, the integrated strength of the computed nuclear structure functions in the resonance region, is considerably lower than the DIS one.

Helicity amplitudes and electromagnetic decays of strange baryon resonances

We present results for the helicity amplitudes of the lowest-lying hyperon resonances Y*, computed within the framework of the Bonn constituent-quark model, which is based on the Bethe-Salpeter approach. The seven parameters entering the model are fitted against the best known baryon masses. Accordingly, the results for the helicity amplitudes are genuine predictions. Some hyperon resonances are seen to couple more strongly to a virtual photon with finite Q^2 than to a real photon. Other Y*'s, such as the S_{01}(1670) Lambda resonance or the S_{11}(1620) Sigma resonance, have large electromagnetic decay widths and couple very strongly to real photons. The negatively-charged and neutral members of a Sigma* triplet may couple only moderately to the Sigma(1193), while the positively-charged member of the same Sigma* triplet displays a relatively large coupling to the Sigma^+(1193) state. This illustrates the necessity of investigating all isospin channels in order to obtain a complete picture of the hyperon spectrum.

We present a qualitative argument for predicting the behaviour of the helicity asymmetries of baryon resonances at high Q^2.

A(e,e'p) reactions at GeV energies

An unfactorized and relativistic framework for calculating A(e,e'p) observables at typical JLAB energies is presented. Results of (e,e'p) model calculations for the target nuclei ^{12}C and ^{16}O are presented and compared to data from SLAC and JLAB.

Validity of the Impulse Approximation and Quasielastic (e,e'p) Reactions from Nuclei

We assess the combined effect of ground-state correlations, meson-exchange and isobar currents upon the cross sections for quasielastic (e,e'p) reactions from nuclei. Four-momenta in the range 0.1 \leq Q^2 \leq 1 GeV^2 are addressed. We observe that for $Q^2$ values exceeding 0.2 GeV^2, quasielastic conditions and missing momenta below the Fermi momentum, the ground-state correlations and two-body currents do not dramatically alter the $(e,e'p)$ predictions as they are obtained in the impulse approximation. Moreover, deviations from the impulse approximation exhibit a rather modest Q^2 dependence.

Spin-dependent correlations and the semi-exclusive ^{16}O(e,e'p) reaction

The effect of central, tensor and spin-isospin nucleon-nucleon correlations upon semi-exclusive ^{16}O(e,e'p) reactions is studied for Q^2 and Bjorken x values in the range $0.2 \lesssim Q^2 \lesssim 1.1 (GeV/c)^2$ and 0.15 $\lesssim$ x $\lesssim$ 2. The fully unfactorized calculations are performed in a framework that accounts not only for the dynamical coupling of virtual photons to correlated nucleon pairs but also for meson-exchange and $Δ_{33}$-isobar currents. Tensor correlations are observed to produce substantially larger amounts of semi-exclusive ^{16}O(e,e'p) strength than central correlations do and are predominantly manifest in the proton-neutron knockout channel. With the exception of the $x \approx 2$ case, in all kinematical situations studied the meson-exchange and isobar currents are a strong source of A(e,e'p) strength at deep missing energies. This feature gives the A(e,e'p) strength at deep missing energies a pronounced transverse character.

Polarization degrees of freedom in two-nucleon knockout from finite nuclei

Polarization observables for the A(e,e'NN) and A(γ,NN) reactions are a powerful tool to study nucleon-nucleon correlations in the nuclear medium. In this paper, model calculations for the ^{4}He(e,e'pp), ^{16}O(\vec{e},e'\vec{p}p), ^{16}O(\vec{e},e' \vec{p}n) and ^{12}C(\vecγ,\vec{p}N) reactions are presented. The sensitivity of the differential cross sections and polarization observables to central and spin-dependent nucleon-nucleon correlations is discussed.

Meson and Isobar Degrees of Freedom in A($\vec{e},e'\vec{p}$) reactions at $0.2 \leq Q^2 \leq 0.8 (GeV/c)^2$

The effect of meson and isobar degrees of freedom in A($\vec{e},e'\vec{p}$) and A(e,e'n) is studied for four-momentum transfers Q^2 in the range between 0.2 and 0.8 (GeV/c)^2. The calculations are performed in a non-relativistic framework with explicit (N,Δ,π) degrees-of-freedom. For the whole range of momentum transfers under investigation the relative effect of the meson-exchange and isobar degrees of freedom is significant. At low missing momenta and quasi-elastic conditions, a tendency to reduce the (e,e'p) and (e,e'n) differential cross sections is noticed. The greatest sensitivity is found in the interference structure functions $W_{LT}$ and $W_{TT}$. The recoil polarization observables, on the other hand, are moderately affected by the meson-exchange and $Δ$-isobar currents.

Polarization observables in electronuclear two-nucleon knockout

Differential (e,e'pp) measurements are presently recognized as a way of studying short-range correlations in finite nuclei. The ($\vec{e},e'\vec{p}p$) and ($\vec{e},e'\vec{p}n$) differential cross section and polarization observables are studied in a microscopic model that accounts for the short-range correlations, outgoing-nucleon distortions, meson-exchange and $Δ$-isobar currents. It is pointed out that polarization observables represent an attractive alternative for absolute electronuclear two-nucleon knockout measurements. In the polarization transfer $P'_t$ for ($\vec{e},e'\vec{p}p$), the effect of central short-range correlations is predicted to be large while at the same time the final-state interaction effects are small.

Polarization degrees of freedom in photoinduced two-nucleon knockout from finite nuclei

The polarization degrees of freedom in photoinduced two-nucleon knockout from finite nuclei are studied. It is pointed out that they open good perspectives to study the dynamics of dinucleons in the medium in detail. The ($γ,pp$) and ($γ,pn$) angular cross sections, photon asymmetries and outgoing nucleon polarizations are calculated for the target nuclei $^{16}$O and $^{12}$C and photonenergies ranging from 100 up to 500 MeV. It is investigated to which degree the two-nucleon emission reaction is dominated by photoabsorption on $^3S_1(T=0)$ proton-neutron and $^1S_0(T=1)$ proton-proton pairs in the nuclear medium. The calculations demonstrate that dominance of $S$ wave photoabsorption in the ($γ,pn$) channel does not necessarily imply that the reaction mechanism is similar to what is observed in deuteron photodisintegration.

Photoinduced two-proton knockout and ground-state correlations in nuclei

A factorized and analytical form for the A($γ$,pp) and A(e,e$'$pp) cross section is proposed. In the suggested scheme the two-proton knockout cross sections can be directly analyzed in terms of the ground-state correlation functions. Central, spin-spin and tensor correlations are considered. In the longitudinal channel, the (e,e$'$pp) cross section is predicted to exhibit a peculiar sensitivity to ground-state correlation effects.

Short-range correlations in (e,e$'$p) and (e,e$'$pp) reactions on complex nuclei

The influence of short-range correlations (SRC) on the triple-coincidence (e,e$'$pp) reactions is studied. The non-relativistic model uses a mean-field potential to account for the distortions that the escaping particles undergo. Apart from the SRC, that are implemented through a Jastrow ansatz with a realistic correlation function, we incorporate the contribution from pion exchange and intermediate $Δ_{33}$ currents. The (e,e$'$pp) cross sections are predicted to exhibit a sizeable sensitivity to the SRC. The contribution from the two-nucleon breakup channel to the semi-exclusive $^{12}$C(e,e$'$p) cross section is calculated in the kinematics of a recent NIKHEF-K experiment. In the semi-exclusive channel, a selective sensitivity in terms of the missing energy and momentum to the SRC is found.

Two-body currents in inclusive electron scattering

The longitudinal and transverse structure functions are calculated for inclusive electron scattering from ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{40}$Ca in the quasielastic and dip region. The microscopic model presented here incorporates two-body currents derived from one-pion exchange and intermediate $Δ$ excitation. The reaction mechanism involves both one-nucleon and two-nucleon knockout processes. It is demonstrated that, even for quasielastic kinematics, two-body currents give a substantial contribution to the transverse structure function. Furthermore, the observed excess of transverse strength in the dip region between the quasielastic and delta peak can be partially ascribed to direct two-nucleon knockout following photoabsorption on a two-body current.
