On a critical curl-curl system of Lane-Emden type

We study the system $\nabla\times\nabla\times u = |v|^{q-2}v$, $\nabla\times\nabla\times v = |u|^{p-2}u$ of Lane-Emden type in $\mathbb R^3$, with exponents $p,q>3$ on the critical hyperbola $1/p+1/q=1/3$. We prove the existence of a ground state solution by reducing the system to a quasilinear fourth-order curl-curl equation and minimizing the associated Sobolev-curl quotient. A concentration-compactness argument shows there are finitely many concentration points for a Palais-Smale sequence $(u_n)$. This yields a.e. convergence of $\nabla\times\nabla\times u_n$ to $\nabla\times\nabla\times u$ where $u$ is the weak limit of $(u_n)$. We also prove that the optimal Sobolev-curl constant is attained and is strictly larger than the usual second-order Sobolev constant. If $p=q$, we show $u$ and $v$ are necessarily equal for every solution. In an appendix we show that our concentration argument also applies to a scalar quasilinear fourth order equation.

Explicit counterexamples to Frank-Loss optimizer conjectures for critical Dirac and vector Sobolev inequalities

Frank and Loss proposed critical Sobolev inequalities for the Dirac operator and for vector fields. They conjectured optimality of their spinorial family and wrote that it is conceivable that the higher-dimensional Loss-Yau potential is an optimizer. Wang and Zhang recently disproved both optimizer claims using direct comparison and instability arguments. We compute closed-form quotients for two elementary families of explicit competitors with strictly smaller quotients. For every $d\geq2$, the spinorial competitor is a constant spinor multiplied by a scalar Aubin-Talenti optimizer. For every $d\geq3$, the vector competitor is the planar azimuthal field \[ A_d(x)=\frac{d}{(1+\lvert x\rvert^2)^2} (-x_2,x_1,0,\ldots,0). \] It lies in the nonlinear gauge and its quotient is computed in closed form. For every odd $d\geq3$, it gives an explicit proof of nonoptimality of the higher-dimensional Loss-Yau-Dunne-Min potential. In dimension three, this field is a specific member of the competitor family of Wang and Zhang: it is a linear combination of the Loss-Yau potential and its reflected twin. Its axisymmetry gives a negative answer to their question about minimization within the $\mathrm{SO}(2)\times 1$-invariant class.

Ground states and sharp logarithmic Sobolev inequalities for logarithmic Schrödinger equations with partial confinement

We study the logarithmic Schrödinger equation with an arbitrary positive semidefinite quadratic potential and a periodic potential in the unconfined directions. The main variational difficulty is to turn a constrained minimizer into a critical point when the energy is extended-valued and not of class $C^1$ on the natural Hilbert space. We establish an abstract principle for convex lower semicontinuous energies with a smooth perturbation, allowing a scaling law for the full energy without requiring homogeneity of its convex part. Combined with a profile decomposition under integer translations, this principle yields a positive ground state for every rank of the quadratic form. When the periodic potential vanishes, we prove a sharp anisotropic logarithmic Sobolev inequality, determine its optimal constant and all equality cases, and classify positive ground states as explicit anisotropic Gaussons, unique up to translations along the kernel of the quadratic form. When the periodic component is constant, we also establish existence and classify all normalized ground states at every prescribed positive mass, with explicit formulas for the minimum energy and the associated Lagrange multiplier.

Optimizers in Sobolev-curl inequalities

We study a Sobolev-type inequality involving the $p$-curl operator in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We prove the existence of a minimizer $u:\mathbb{R}^3\to \mathbb{R}^3$ which yields a solution to the $p$-curl-curl equation in the critical case $$ \nabla\times (|\nabla\times u|^{p-2}\nabla\times u)= |u|^{p^*-2}u\quad \hbox{in }\mathbb{R}^3.$$ The cases $p=2$ and $p=3/2$ are motivated, respectively, by nonlinear Maxwell equations and zero modes of three-dimensional Dirac operators. The infinite-dimensional kernel of curl and the critical exponent prevent a direct application of standard compactness arguments. Our proof combines local compactness under the nonlinear constraint $\operatorname{div}(|u|^{p^*-2}u)=0$ and a new variational approach that allows to treat quasilinear strongly indefinite problems by direct minimization on a Nehari-type constraint. We also establish existence and compactness results in axially symmetric classes, including two types of solutions for $p=3/2$ distinct from the explicit Loss--Yau fields. Finally, the same minimization strategy gives a new proof of compactness modulo translations and dilations for minimizing sequences in the classical critical Sobolev inequality.

Ground state solutions to Born-Infeld-Choquard problem

In this paper, we investigate the existence and qualitative properties of ground state solutions for the nonlocal Born-Infeld-Choquard problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -{\rm div}\left(\frac{\nabla u}{\sqrt{1-|\nabla u|^2}}\right)+ ωu=\big(I_α\ast |u|^{p}\big)|u|^{p-2}u, & \hbox{in }\mathbb{R}^N,\; N\geq 3, \\[5mm] u(x)\to 0, &\hbox{as }|x|\to +\infty. \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $p>\frac{N+α}{N}$, $ω=0,1$ and $0<α<N$. The equation is driven by the mean curvature operator in Lorentz-Minkowski space, motivated by the Born-Infeld nonlinear electromagnetic theory, and is coupled with a Choquard-type nonlocal nonlinearity. Due to the inherent relativistic gradient constraint $|\nabla u| \le 1$, the associated energy functional lacks standard $\mathcal{C}^1$ regularity, preventing the direct use of classical variational techniques. We employ a non-smooth critical point theory on appropriate Pohožaev-type manifold to establish the existence of ground state solutions. Such non-smooth critical point theorem is abstract and we further show that it can be employed for strongly indefinite problem as well. We also demonstrate that these solutions are radially symmetric, and monotonously decay to zero at infinity.

Between Maxwell and Born-Infeld: the presence of the magnetic field

Our motivation is to consider an electromagnetic Lagrangian density $\mathcal{L}_q$, depending on a parameter such that, for $q=1$ it corresponds to the Born-Infeld Lagrangian density and for $q=2$ it restores the Maxwell one. The model in the presence of given charge and current densities is investigated. We solve the pure magnetostatic problem for $q\in(6/5,2)$. We also study the electrostatic problem in the presence of an assigned magnetic field for $q\in[1,2)$.

Ground state solutions to the nonlinear Born-Infeld problem

In the paper we show the existence of ground state solutions to the nonlinear Born-Infeld problem \[ \mathrm{div}\, \left( \frac{\nabla u}{\sqrt{1-|\nabla u|^2}} \right) + f(u) = 0, \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^N \] in the zero and positive mass cases. Moreover, we find a new proof of the Sobolev-type inequality \[ \int_{\mathbb{R}^N} \left(1 - \sqrt{1-|\nabla u|^2}\right) \, dx \geq C_{N,p} \left( \int_{\mathbb{R}^N} |u|^p \, dx \right)^{\frac{N}{N+p}}, \] for $p > 2^*$ as well as the characterization of the optimal constant $C_{N,p}$ in terms of the ground state energy level. Previous approaches relied on approximation schemes and/or symmetry assumptions, which typically yield to compact embeddings and may lead to solutions that are not at the ground state energy level. In contrast, neither approximation arguments nor symmetry assumptions are employed in the paper to obtain a ground state solution. Instead, we develop a new direct variational approach based on minimization over a Pohožaev manifold combined with profile decomposition techniques. Finally, we show that nonradial solutions exist whenever $N \geq 4$; in particular, this settles a previously open problem in the case $N=5$.

Travelling waves for Maxwell's equations in nonlinear and symmetric media

We look for travelling wave fields $$ E(x,y,z,t)= U(x,y) \cos(kz+ωt)+ \widetilde U(x,y)\sin(kz+ωt),\quad (x,y,z)\in\mathbb{R}^3,\, t\in\mathbb{R}, $$ satisfying Maxwell's equations in a nonlinear and cylindrically symmetric medium. We obtain a sequence of solutions with diverging energy that is different from that obtained by McLeod, Stuart, and Troy. In addition, we consider a more general nonlinearity, controlled by an \textit{N}-function.

Traveling waves for nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We look for traveling wave solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a subsonic speed, covering several physical models with Sobolev subcritical nonlinear effects. Our approach is based on a variant of Sobolev-type inequality involving the momentum and we show the existence of its minimizers solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Polyharmonic Nonlinear Scalar Field Equations

In this paper, we present a result on the existence of ground state solutions for the polyharmonic nonlinear equation $(-Δ)^m u=g(u)$, assuming that $g$ has a general subcritical growth at infinity, inspired by Berestycki and Lions \cite{BerestyckiLions}. In comparison with the biharmonic case studied in \cite{Med-Siem}, the presence of a higher-order operator gives rise to several analytical challenges, which are overcome in the present work. Furthermore, we establish a new polyharmonic logarithmic Sobolev inequality.

Multiple normalized solutions to a system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We find a normalized solution $u=(u_1,\ldots,u_K)$ to the system of $K$ coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{l} -Δu_i+ λ_i u_i = \sum_{j=1}^Kβ_{i,j}u_i|u_i|^{p/2-2}|u_j|^{p/2} \quad \mathrm{in} \, \mathbb{R}^3,\newline u_i \in H^1_{rad}(\mathbb{R}^3),\newline \int_{\mathbb{R}^3} |u_i|^2 \, dx = ρ_i^2 \quad \text{for }i=1,\ldots, K, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $ρ=(ρ_1,\ldots,ρ_K)\in(0,\infty)^K$ is prescribed, $(λ,u) \in \mathbb{R}^K\times H^1(\mathbb{R}^3)^K$ are the unknown and $4\leq p<6$. In the case of two equations we show the existence of multiple solutions provided that the coupling is sufficiently large. We also show that for negative coupling there are no ground state solutions. The main novelty in our approach is that we use the Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum theorem in order to estimate the Morse index of a solution as well as a Liouville-type result in an exterior domain.

Semiclassical states for the curl-curl problem

We show the existence of the so-called semiclassical states $\mathbf{U}:\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}^3$ to the following curl-curl problem $$ \varepsilon^2\; \nabla \times (\nabla \times \mathbf{U}) + V(x) \mathbf{U} = g(\mathbf{U}), $$ for sufficiently small $\varepsilon > 0$. We study the asymptotic behaviour of solutions as $\varepsilon\to 0^+$ and we investigate also a related nonlinear Schrödinger equation involving a singular potential. The problem models large permeability nonlinear materials satisfying the system of Maxwell equations.

Normalized solutions to at least mass critical problems: singular polyharmonic equations and related curl-curl problems

We are interested in the existence of normalized solutions to the problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} (-Δ)^m u+\fracμ{|y|^{2m}}u + λu = g(u), \quad x = (y,z) \in \mathbb{R}^K \times \mathbb{R}^{N-K}, \\ \int_{\mathbb{R}^N} |u|^2 \, dx = ρ> 0, \end{cases} \end{equation*} in the so-called at least mass critical regime. We utilize recently introduced variational techniques involving the minimization on the $L^2$-ball. Moreover, we find also a solution to the related curl-curl problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \nabla\times\nabla\times\mathbf{U}+λ\mathbf{U}=f(\mathbf{U}), \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^N, \\ \int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|\mathbf{U}|^2\,dx=ρ, \end{cases} \end{equation*} which arises from the system of Maxwell equations and is of great importance in nonlinear optics.

Normalized solutions to Schrödinger equations in the strongly sublinear regime

We look for solutions to the Schrödinger equation \[ -Δu + λu = g(u) \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^N \] coupled with the mass constraint $\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|u|^2\,dx = ρ^2$, with $N\ge2$. The behaviour of $g$ at the origin is allowed to be strongly sublinear, i.e., $\lim_{s\to0}g(s)/s = -\infty$, which includes the case \[ g(s) = αs \ln s^2 + μ|s|^{p-2} s \] with $α> 0$ and $μ\in \mathbb{R}$, $2 < p \le 2^*$ properly chosen. We consider a family of approximating problems that can be set in $H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ and the corresponding least-energy solutions, then we prove that such a family of solutions converges to a least-energy one to the original problem. Additionally, under certain assumptions about $g$ that allow us to work in a suitable subspace of $H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$, we prove the existence of infinitely many solutions.

Normalized solutions to Born-Infeld and quasilinear problems

The paper concerns the existence of normalized solutions to a large class of quasilinear problems, including the well-known Born-Infeld operator. In the mass subcritical cases, we study a global minimization problem and obtain a ground state solution for a $(2,q)$-type operator which implies the existence of solutions to the Born-Infeld problem. We also deal with the mass critical and mass supercritical cases for quasilinear problems involving the $(2,q)$-type operator.

Multiple solutions to cylindrically symmetric curl-curl problems and related Schrödinger equations with singular potentials

We look for multiple solutions $\mathbf{U}\colon\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}^3$ to the curl-curl problem \[ \nabla\times\nabla\times\mathbf{U}=h(x,\mathbf{U}),\qquad x\in\mathbb{R}^3, \] with a nonlinear function $h\colon\mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}^3$ which is critical in $\mathbb{R}^3$, i.e., $h(x,\mathbf{U})=|\mathbf{U}|^4\mathbf{U}$, or has subcritical growth at infinity. If $h$ is radial in $\mathbf{U}$ and $a=1$ below, then we show that the solutions to the problem above are in one-to-one correspondence with the solutions to the following Schrödinger equation \[ -Δu+\frac{a}{r^2}u=f(x,u),\qquad u\colon\mathbb{R}^3\to \mathbb{R}, \] where $x=(y,z)\in \mathbb{R}^2\times \mathbb{R}$, $r=|y|$ and $a \ge 0$. In the critical case, the multiplicity problem for the latter equation has been studied only in the autonomous case $a=0$ and the available methods seem to be insufficient for the problem involving the singular potential, i.e., $a\neq 0$, due to the lack of conformal invariance. Therefore we develop methods for the critical curl-curl problem and show the multiplicity of bound states for both equations. In the subcritical case, instead, studying the Schrödinger equation in higher dimensions, we find infinitely many bound states for both problems.

Born-Infeld problem with general nonlinearity

In this paper, using variational methods, we look for non-trivial solutions for the following problem $$ \begin{cases} -{\rm div}\left(a(|\nabla u|^2)\nabla u\right)=g(u), & \hbox{in }\mathbb{R}^N,\; N\geq 3, \\[1mm] u(x)\to 0, &\hbox{as }|x|\to +\infty, \end{cases} $$ under general assumptions on the continuous nonlinearity $g$. We assume only growth conditions of $g$ at $0$, however no growth conditions at infinity are imposed. If $a(s)=(1-s)^{-1/2}$, we obtain the well-known Born-Infeld operator, but we are able to study also a general class of $a$ such that $a(s)\to+\infty$ as $s\to 1^{-}$. We find a radial solution to the problem with finite energy.

Travelling waves for Maxwell's equations in nonlinear and nonsymmetric media

We look for travelling wave fields $$ E(x,y,z,t)= U(x,y) \cos(kz+ωt)+ \widetilde U(x,y)\sin(kz+ωt),\quad (x,y,z)\in\mathbb{R}^3,\, t\in\mathbb{R} $$ satisfying Maxwell's equations in a nonlinear medium which is not necessarily cylindrically symmetric. The nonlinearity of the medium enters Maxwell's equations by postulating a nonlinear material law $D=\varepsilon E+χ(x,y, \langle |E|^2\rangle)E$ between the electric field $E$, its time averaged intensity $\langle |E|^2\rangle$ and the electric displacement field $D$. We derive a new semilinear elliptic problem for the profiles $U,\widetilde U:\mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{R}^3$ $$Lu-V(x,y)u=f(x,y,u)\quad\hbox{with }u=\begin{pmatrix} U \\ \widetilde U \end{pmatrix}, \hbox{ for }(x,y)\in\mathbb{R}^2,$$ where $f(x,y,u)=ω^2χ(x,y, |u|^2)u$. Solving this equation we can obtain exact travelling wave solutions of the underlying nonlinear Maxwell equations. We are able to deal with super quadratic and subcritical focusing effects, e.g. in the Kerr-like materials with the nonlinear susceptibility of the form $χ(x,y,\langle |E^2|\rangle E) = χ^{(3)}(x,y)\langle |E|^2\rangle E$. A variational approach is presented for the semilinear problem. The energy functional associated with the equation is strongly indefinite, since $L$ contains an infinite dimensional kernel. The methods developed in this paper may be applicable to other strongly indefinite elliptic problems and other nonlinear phenomena.
