Least energy solutions to a cooperative system of Schrödinger equations with prescribed $L^2$-bounds: at least $L^2$-critical growth

We look for least energy solutions to the cooperative systems of coupled Schrödinger equations \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu_i + λ_i u_i = \partial_iG(u)\quad \mathrm{in} \ \mathbb{R}^N, \ N \geq 3, u_i \in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N), \int_{\mathbb{R}^N} |u_i|^2 \, dx \leq ρ_i^2 \end{cases} i\in\{1,\dots,K\} \end{equation*} with $G\geq 0$, where $ρ_i>0$ is prescribed and $(λ_i, u_i) \in \mathbb{R} \times H^1 (\mathbb{R}^N)$ is to be determined, $i\in\{1,\dots,K\}$. Our approach is based on the minimization of the energy functional over a linear combination of the Nehari and Pohožaev constraints intersected with the product of the closed balls in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)$ of radii $ρ_i$, which allows to provide general growth assumptions about $G$ and to know in advance the sign of the corresponding Lagrange multipliers. We assume that $G$ has at least $L^2$-critical growth at $0$ and admits Sobolev critical growth. The more assumptions we make about $G$, $N$, and $K$, the more can be said about the minimizers of the corresponding energy functional. In particular, if $K=2$, $N\in\{3,4\}$, and $G$ satisfies further assumptions, then $u=(u_1,u_2)$ is normalized, i.e., $\int_{\mathbb{R}^N} |u_i|^2 \, dx=ρ_i^2$ for $i\in\{1,2\}$.

Bound states for the Schrödinger equation with mixed-type nonlinearites

We prove the existence results for the Schrödinger equation of the form $$ -Δu + V(x) u = g(x,u), \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^N, $$ where $g$ is superlinear and subcritical in some periodic set $K$ and linear in $\mathbb{R}^N \setminus K$ for sufficiently large $|u|$. The periodic potential $V$ is such that $0$ lies in a spectral gap of $-Δ+V$. We find a solution with the energy bounded by a certain min-max level, and infinitely many geometrically distinct solutions provided that $g$ is odd in $u$.

Nonlinear curl-curl problems in $\mathbb{R}^3$

We survey recent results concerning ground states and bound states $u\colon\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}^3$ to the curl-curl problem $$\nabla\times(\nabla\times u)+V(x)u= f(x,u) \quad\hbox{ in } \mathbb{R}^3,$$ which originates from the nonlinear Maxwell equations. The energy functional associated with this problem is strongly indefinite due to the infinite dimensional kernel of $\nabla\times(\nabla\times \cdot)$. The growth of the nonlinearity $f$ is superlinear and subcritical at infinity or purely critical and we demonstrate a variational approach to the problem involving the generalized Nehari manifold. We also present some refinements of known results.

Biharmonic nonlinear scalar field equations

We prove a Brezis-Kato-type regularity result for weak solutions to the biharmonic nonlinear equation $$ Δ^2 u = g(x,u)\qquad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^N$$ with a Carathéodory function $g:\mathbb{R}^N\times \mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}$, $N\geq 5$. The regularity results give rise to the existence of ground state solutions provided that $g$ has a general subcritical growth at infinity. We also conceive a new biharmonic logarithmic Sobolev inequality $$ \int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|u|^2\log |u|\,dx\leq\frac{N}{8}\log \Big(C\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|Δu|^2\,dx \Big), \quad\text{for } u \in H^2(\mathbb{R}^N), \; \int_{\mathbb{R}^N}u^2\,dx = 1, $$ for a constant $0<C< \big(\frac{2}{πe N}\big)^2$ and we characterize its minimizers.

Nonlinear scalar field equation with competing nonlocal terms

We find radial and nonradial solutions to the following nonlocal problem $$-Δu +ωu= \big(I_α\ast F(u)\big)f(u)-\big(I_β\ast G(u)\big)g(u) \text{ in } \mathbb{R}^N$$ under general assumptions, in the spirit of Berestycki and Lions, imposed on $f$ and $g$, where $N\geq 3$, $0\leq β\leq α 0$, then we deal with two competing nonlocal terms modelling attractive and repulsive interaction potentials.

A Sobolev-type inequality for the curl operator and ground states for the curl-curl equation with critical Sobolev exponent

Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$ be a Lipschitz domain and let $S_\mathrm{curl}(Ω)$ be the largest constant such that $$ \int_{\mathbb{R}^3}|\nabla\times u|^2\, dx\geq S_{\mathrm{curl}}(Ω) \inf_{\substack{w\in W_0^6(\mathrm{curl};\mathbb{R}^3)\\ \nabla\times w=0}}\Big(\int_{\mathbb{R}^3}|u+w|^6\,dx\Big)^{\frac13} $$ for any $u$ in $W_0^6(\mathrm{curl};Ω)\subset W_0^6(\mathrm{curl};\mathbb{R}^3)$ where $W_0^6(\mathrm{curl};Ω)$ is the closure of $\mathcal{C}_0^{\infty}(Ω,\mathbb{R}^3)$ in $\{u\in L^6(Ω,\mathbb{R}^3): \nabla\times u\in L^2(Ω,\mathbb{R}^3)\}$ with respect to the norm $(|u|_6^2+|\nabla\times u|_2^2)^{1/2}$. We show that $S_{\mathrm{curl}}(Ω)$ is strictly larger than the classical Sobolev constant $S$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Moreover, $S_{\mathrm{curl}}(Ω)$ is independent of $Ω$ and is attained by a ground state solution to the curl-curl problem $$ \nabla\times (\nabla\times u) = |u|^4u $$ if $Ω=\mathbb{R}^3$. With the aid of those results, we also investigate ground states of the Brezis-Nirenberg-type problem for the curl-curl operator in a bounded domain $Ω$ $$\nabla\times (\nabla\times u) +λu = |u|^4u\quad\hbox{in }Ω$$ with the so-called metallic boundary condition $ν\times u=0$ on $\partialΩ$, where $ν$ is the exterior normal to $\partialΩ$.

Normalized ground states of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with at least mass critical growth

We propose a simple minimization method to show the existence of least energy solutions to the normalized problem \begin{cases} -Δu + λu = g(u) \quad \mathrm{in} \ \mathbb{R}^N, \ N \geq 3, \\ u \in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N), \\ \int_{\mathbb{R}^N} |u|^2 \, dx = ρ> 0, \end{cases} where $ρ$ is prescribed and $(λ, u) \in \mathbb{R} \times H^1 (\mathbb{R}^N)$ is to be determined. The new approach based on the direct minimization of the energy functional on the linear combination of Nehari and Pohozaev constraints is demonstrated, which allows to provide general growth assumptions imposed on $g$. We cover the most known physical examples and nonlinearities with growth considered in the literature so far as well as we admit the mass critical growth at $0$.

General class of optimal Sobolev inequalities and nonlinear scalar field equations

We find a class of optimal Sobolev inequalities $$\Big(\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|\nabla u|^2\, dx\Big)^{\frac{N}{N-2}}\geq C_{N,G}\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}G(u)\, dx, \quad u\in\mathcal{D}^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^N), N\geq 3,$$ where the nonlinear function $G:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ of class $\mathcal{C}^1$ satisfies general growth assumptions in the spirit of the fundamental works of Berestycki and Lions. We admit, however, a wider class of problems involving zero, positive and infinite mass cases as well as $G$ need not be even. We show that any minimizer is radial up to a translation, moreover, up to a dilation, it is a least energy solution of the nonlinear scalar field equation $$-Δu = g(u)\quad \hbox{in }\mathbb{R}^N,\quad\hbox{with }g=G'.$$ In particular, if $G(u)=u^2\log |u|$, then the sharp constant is $C_{N,G}:=2^*(\frac{N}{2})^{2^*}e^{\frac{2(N-1)}{N-2}}(π)^{\frac{N}{N-2}}$ and $u_λ(x)=e^{\frac{N-1}{2}-\frac{λ^2}{2}|x|^2}$ with $λ>0$ constitutes the whole family of minimizers up to translations. The optimal inequality provides a new proof of the classical logarithmic Sobolev inequality based on a Pohozaev manifold approach. Moreover, if $N\geq 4$, then there is at least one nonradial solution and if, in addition, $N\neq 5$, then there are infinitely many nonradial solutions of the nonlinear scalar field equation. The energy functional associated with the problem may be infinite on $\mathcal{D}^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ and is not Fréchet differentiable in its domain. We present a variational approach to this problem based on a new variant of Lions' lemma in $\mathcal{D}^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^N)$.

Nonradial solutions of nonlinear scalar field equations

We prove new results concerning the nonlinear scalar field equation \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} -Δu = g(u)&\quad \hbox{in }\mathbb{R}^N,\; N\geq 3, u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)& \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} with a nonlinearity $g$ satisfying the general assumptions due to Berestycki and Lions. In particular, we find at least one nonradial solution for any $N\geq 4$ minimizing the energy functional on the Pohozaev constraint in a subspace of $H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ consisting of nonradial functions. If in addition $N\neq 5$, then there are infinitely many nonradial solutions. These solutions are sign-changing. The results give a positive answer to a question posed by Berestycki and Lions in [5,6]. Moreover, we build a critical point theory on a topological manifold, which enables us to solve the above equation as well as to treat new elliptic problems.

Multiple solutions to a nonlinear curl-curl problem in $\mathbb{R}^3$

We look for ground states and bound states $E:\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}^3$ to the curl-curl problem $$\nabla\times(\nabla\times E)= f(x,E) \qquad\hbox{in } \mathbb{R}^3$$ which originates from nonlinear Maxwell equations. The energy functional associated with this problem is strongly indefinite due to the infinite dimensional kernel of $\nabla\times(\nabla\times \cdot)$. The growth of the nonlinearity $f$ is controlled by an $N$-function $Φ:\mathbb{R}\to [0,\infty)$ such that $\displaystyle\lim_{s\to 0}Φ(s)/s^6=\lim_{s\to+\infty}Φ(s)/s^6=0$. We prove the existence of a ground state, i.e. a least energy nontrivial solution, and the existence of infinitely many geometrically distinct bound states. We improve previous results concerning ground states of curl-curl problems. Multiplicity results for our problem have not been studied so far in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and in order to do this we construct a suitable critical point theory. It is applicable to a wide class of strongly indefinite problems, including this one and Schrödinger equations.

Note on semiclassical states for the Schrödinger equation with nonautonomous nonlinearities

We consider the following Schrödinger equation $$ - \hslash ^2 Δu + V(x)u = Γ(x) f(u) \quad \mathrm{in} \ \mathbb{R}^N, $$ where $u \in H^1 (\mathbb{R}^N)$, $u > 0$, $\hslash > 0$ and $f$ is superlinear and subcritical nonlinear term. We show that if $V$ attains local minimum and $Γ$ attains global maximum at the same point or $V$ attains global minimum and $Γ$ attains local maximum at the same point, then there exists a positive solution for sufficiently small $\hslash>0$.

The Brezis-Nirenberg problem for the curl-curl operator

We look for solutions $E:Ω\to\mathbb{R}^3$ of the problem $$ \left\{ \begin{aligned} &\nabla\times(\nabla\times E) +λE = |E|^{p-2}E &&\quad \text{in }Ω&ν\times E = 0 &&\quad \text{on }\partialΩ\end{aligned} \right. $$ on a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$, where $\nabla\times$ denotes the curl operator in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The equation describes the propagation of the time-harmonic electric field $\Re\{E(x)e^{iωt}\}$ in a nonlinear isotropic material $Ω$ with $λ=-μ\varepsilon ω^2\leq 0$, where $μ$ and $\varepsilon$ stand for the permeability and the linear part of the permittivity of the material. The nonlinear term $|E|^{p-2}E$ with $p>2$ is responsible for the nonlinear polarisation of $Ω$ and the boundary conditions are those for $Ω$ surrounded by a perfect conductor. The problem has a variational structure and we deal with the critical values $p$, for instance, in convex domains $Ω$ or in domains with $\mathcal{C}^{1,1}$ boundary $p=6=2^*$ is the Sobolev critical exponent and we get the quintic nonlinearity in the equation. We show that there exist a cylindrically symmetric ground state solution and a finite number of cylindrically symmetric bound states depending on $λ\leq 0$. We develop a new critical point theory which allows to solve the problem, and which enables us to treat more general anisotropic media as well as other variational problems.

Ground states of time-harmonic semilinear Maxwell equations in R^3 with vanishing permittivity

We investigate the existence of solutions $E:\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}^3$ of the time-harmonic semilinear Maxwell equation $$\nabla\times(\nabla\times E) + V(x) E = \partial_E F(x,E) \quad \text{in}\mathbb{R}^3,$$ where $V:\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}$, $V(x)\leq 0$ a.e. on $\mathbb{R}^3$, $\nabla\times$ denotes the curl operator in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and $F:\mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}$ is a nonlinear function in $E$. In particular we find a ground state solution provided that suitable growth conditions on $F$ are imposed and $L^{3/2}$-norm of $V$ is less than the best Sobolev constant. In applications $F$ is responsible for the nonlinear polarization and $V(x)=-μω^2\varepsilon(x)$ where $μ>0$ is the magnetic permeability, $ω$ is the frequency of the time-harmonic electric field $\Re\{E(x)e^{iωt}\}$ and $\varepsilon$ is the linear part of the permittivity in an inhomogeneous medium.

Nonlinear time-harmonic Maxwell equations in an anisotropic bounded medium

We find solutions $E:Ω\to\mathbb{R}^3$ of the problem \begin{eqnarray*} \left\{ \begin{aligned} &\nabla\times(μ(x)^{-1}\nabla\times E) - ω^2ε(x) E = \partial_E F(x,E) &&\quad \text{in }Ω\\%\newline &ν\times E = 0 &&\quad \text{on }\partialΩ \end{aligned} \right. \end{eqnarray*} on a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ with exterior normal $ν:\partialΩ\to\mathbb{R}^3$. Here $\nabla\times$ denotes the curl operator in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The equation describes the propagation of the time-harmonic electric field $\Re\{E(x)e^{iωt}\}$ in an anisotropic material with a magnetic permeability tensor $μ(x)\in\mathbb{R}^{3\times3}$ and a permittivity tensor $ε(x)\in\mathbb{R}^{3\times3}$. The boundary conditions are those for $Ω$ surrounded by a perfect conductor. It is required that $μ(x)$ and $ε(x)$ are symmetric and positive definite uniformly for $x\inΩ$, and that $μ,ε\in L^{\infty}(Ω,\mathbb{R}^{3\times 3})$. The nonlinearity $F:Ω\times\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}$ is superquadratic and subcritical in $E$, the model nonlinearity being of Kerr-type: $F(x,E)=|Γ(x)E|^p$ for some $2<p<6$ with $Γ(x)\in GL(3)$ invertible for every $x\inΩ$ and $Γ,Γ^{-1}\in L^\infty(Ω, \mathbb{R}^{3\times 3})$. We prove the existence of a ground state solution and of bound states if $F$ is even in $E$. Moreover if the material is uniaxial we find two types of solutions with cylindrical symmetries.

Nonlinear time-harmonic Maxwell equations in domains

The search for time-harmonic solutions of nonlinear Maxwell equations in the absence of charges and currents leads to the elliptic equation $$\nabla\times\left(μ(x)^{-1} \nabla\times u\right) - ω^2\varepsilon(x)u = f(x,u)$$ for the field $u:Ω\to\mathbb{R}^3$ in a domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$. Here $\varepsilon(x) \in \mathbb{R}^{3\times3}$ is the (linear) permittivity tensor of the material, and $μ(x) \in \mathbb{R}^{3\times3}$ denotes the magnetic permeability tensor. The nonlinearity $f:Ω\times\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}^3$ comes from the nonlinear polarization. If $f=\nabla_uF$ is a gradient then this equation has a variational structure. The goal of this paper is to give an introduction to the problem and the variational approach, and to survey recent results on ground and bound state solutions. It also contains refinements of known results and some new results.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equations with sum of periodic and vanishing potentials and sign-changing nonlinearities

We look for ground state solutions to the following nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$-Δu + V(x)u = f(x,u)-Γ(x)|u|^{q-2}u\hbox{ on }\mathbb{R}^N,$$ where $V=V_{per}+V_{loc}\in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is the sum of a periodic potential $V_{per}$ and a localized potential $V_{loc}$, $Γ\in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is periodic and $Γ(x)\geq 0$ for a.e. $x\in\mathbb{R}^N$ and $2\leq q<2^*$. We assume that $\infσ(-Δ+V)>0$, where $σ(-Δ+V)$ stands for the spectrum of $-Δ+V$ and $f$ has the subcritical growth but higher than $Γ(x)|u|^{q-2}u$, however the nonlinearity $f(x,u)-Γ(x)|u|^{q-2}u$ may change sign. Although a Nehari-type monotonicity condition for the nonlinearity is not satisfied we investigate the existence of ground state solutions being minimizers on the Nehari manifold.

Ground states of a system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with periodic potentials

We are concerned with a system of coupled Schrödinger equations $$-Δu_i + V_i(x)u_i = \partial_{u_i}F(x,u)\hbox{ on }\mathbb{R}^N,\,i=1,2,...,K,$$ where $F$ and $V_i$ are periodic in $x$ and $0\notin σ(-Δ+V_i)$ for $i=1,2,...,K$, where $σ(-Δ+V_i)$ stands for the spectrum of the Schrödinger operator $-Δ+V_i$. We impose general assumptions on the nonlinearity $F$ with the subcritical growth and we find a ground state solution being a minimizer of the energy functional associated with the system on a Nehari-Pankov manifold. Our approach is based on a new linking-type result involving the Nehari-Pankov manifold.

Vortex ground states for Klein-Gordon-Maxwell-Proca type systems

We look for three dimensional vortex-solutions, which have finite energy and are stationary solutions, of Klein-Gordon-Maxwell-Proca type systems of equations. We prove the existence of three dimensional cylindrically symmetric vortex-solutions having a least possible energy among all symmetric solutions. Moreover we show that, if the Proca mass disappears, then the solutions tends to a solution of the Klein-Gordon-Maxwell system.
