The sharp lifespan for a system of multiple speed wave equations: Radial case

Ohta examined a system of multiple speed wave equations with small initial data and demonstrated a finite time blowup. We show, in the radial case, that the same system exists almost globally with the same lifespan as a lower bound. To do this, we use integrated local energy estimate, $r^p$ weighted local energy estimates, the Morawetz estimate that results from using the scaling vector field as a multiplier, and mixed speed ghost weights.

Global existence for quasilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition

We explore the global existence of solutions to systems of quasilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition when the initial data are sufficiently small. We adapt an approach of Keel, Smith, and Sogge, which relies on integrated local energy estimates and a weighted Sobolev estimate that yields decay in $|x|$, by using the $r^p$-weighted local energy estimates of Dafermos and Rodnianski. One advantage of this approach is that all time-dependent vector fields can be avoided and the proof can be readily adapted to address wave equations exterior to star-shaped obstacles.

On a System of Weakly Null Semilinear Equations

We develop a new method for addressing certain weakly null systems of wave equations. This approach does not rely on Lorentz invariance nor on the use of null foliations, both of which restrict applications to, e.g., multiple speed systems. The proof uses a class of space-time Klainerman-Sobolev estimates of the first author, Tataru, and Tohaneanu, which pair nicely with local energy estimates that combine the $r^{p}$-weighted method of Dafermos and Rodnianski with the ghost weight method of Alinhac. We further refine the standard local energy estimate with a modification of the $\partial_{t} - \partial_{r}$ portion of the multiplier.

Long-time existence for systems of quasilinear wave equations

We consider quasilinear wave equations in $(1+3)$-dimensions where the nonlinearity $F(u,u',u")$ is permitted to depend on the solution rather than just its derivatives. For scalar equations, if $(\partial_u^2 F)(0,0,0)=0$, almost global existence was established by Lindblad. We seek to show a related almost global existence result for coupled systems of such equations. To do so, we will rely upon a variant of the $r^p$-weighted local energy estimate of Dafermos and Rodnianski that includes a ghost weight akin to those used by Alinhac. The decay that is needed to close the argument comes from space-time Klainerman-Sobolev type estimates from the work of Metcalfe, Tataru, and Tohaneanu.

On the interaction of metric trapping and a boundary

By considering a two ended warped product manifold, we demonstrate a bifurcation that can occur when metric trapping interacts with a boundary. In this highly symmetric example, as the boundary passes through the trapped set, one goes from a nontrapping scenario where lossless local energy estimates are available for the wave equation to the case of stably trapped rays where all but a logarithmic amount of decay is lost.

Quasilinear Schr\"odinger equations III: Large Data and Short Time

In this article we prove short time local well-posedness in low-regularity Sobolev spaces for large data general quasilinear Schr\"odinger equations with a non-trapping assumption. These results represent improvements over the small data regime considered by the authors in previous works, as well as the pioneering works by Kenig-Ponce-Vega and Kenig-Ponce-Rolvung-Vega, where viscosity methods were used to prove existence of solutions for localized data in high regularity spaces. Our arguments here are purely dispersive. The function spaces in which we show existence are constructed in ways motivated by the results of Mizohata, Ichinose, Doi, and others, including the authors.

Global existence for systems of quasilinear wave equations in (1+4)-dimensions

Hörmander proved global existence of solutions for sufficiently small initial data for scalar wave equations in $(1+4)-$dimensions of the form $\Box u = Q(u, u', u'')$ where $Q$ vanishes to second order and $(\partial_u^2 Q)(0,0,0)=0$. Without the latter condition, only almost global existence may be guaranteed. The first author and Sogge considered the analog exterior to a star-shaped obstacle. Both results relied on writing the lowest order terms $u\partial_αu = \frac{1}{2}\partial_αu^2$ and as such do not immediately generalize to systems. The current study remedies such and extends both results to the case of multiple speed systems.

Localized energy for wave equations with degenerate trapping

Localized energy estimates have become a fundamental tool when studying wave equations in the presence of asymptotically at background geometry. Trapped rays necessitate a loss when compared to the estimate on Minkowski space. A loss of regularity is a common way to incorporate such. When trapping is sufficiently weak, a logarithmic loss of regularity suffices. Here, by studying a warped product manifold introduced by Christianson and Wunsch, we encounter the first explicit example of a situation where an estimate with an algebraic loss of regularity exists and this loss is sharp. Due to the global-in-time nature of the estimate for the wave equation, the situation is more complicated than for the Schrödinger equation. An initial estimate with sub-optimal loss is first obtained, where extra care is required due to the low frequency contributions. An improved estimate is then established using energy functionals that are inspired by WKB analysis. Finally, it is shown that the loss cannot be improved by any power by saturating the estimate with a quasimode.

The Strauss conjecture on asymptotically flat space-times

By assuming a certain localized energy estimate, we prove the existence portion of the Strauss conjecture on asymptotically flat manifolds, possibly exterior to a compact domain, when the spatial dimension is 3 or 4. In particular, this result applies to the 3 and 4-dimensional Schwarzschild and Kerr (with small angular momentum) black hole backgrounds, long range asymptotically Euclidean spaces, and small time-dependent asymptotically flat perturbations of Minkowski space-time. We also permit lower order perturbations of the wave operator. The key estimates are a class of weighted Strichartz estimates, which are used near infinity where the metrics can be viewed as small perturbations of the Minkowski metric, and the assumed localized energy estimate, which is used in the remaining compact set.

Pointwise decay for the Maxwell field on black hole space-times

In this article we study the pointwise decay properties of solutions to the Maxwell system on a class of nonstationary asymptotically flat backgrounds in three space dimensions. Under the assumption that uniform energy bounds and a weak form of local energy decay hold forward in time, we establish peeling estimates for all the components of the Maxwell tensor.

Local energy decay for scalar fields on time dependent non-trapping backgrounds

We consider local energy decay estimates for solutions to scalar wave equations on nontrapping asymptotically flat space-times. Our goals are two-fold. First we consider the stationary case, where we can provide a full spectral characterization of local energy decay bounds; this characterization simplifies in the stationary symmetric case. Then we consider the almost stationary, almost symmetric case. There we establish two main results: The first is a "two point" local energy decay estimate which is valid for a general class of (non-symmetric) almost stationary wave equations which satisfy a certain nonresonance property at zero frequency. The second result, which also requires the almost symmetry condition, is to establish an exponential trichotomy in the energy space via finite dimensional time dependent stable and unstable sub-spaces, with an infinite dimensional complement on which solutions disperse via the usual local energy decay estimate.

Global existence for a coupled wave system related to the Strauss conjecture

A coupled system of semilinear wave equations is considered, and a small data global existence result related to the Strauss conjecture is proved. Previous results have shown that one of the powers may be reduced below the critical power for the Strauss conjecture provided the other power sufficiently exceeds such. The stability of such results under asymptotically flat perturbations of the space-time where an integrated local energy decay estimate is available is established.

Localized energy estimates on Myers-Perry space-times

Localized energy estimates for the wave equation have been increasingly used to prove various other dispersive estimates. This article focuses on proving such localized energy estimates on $(1+4)$-dimensional Myers-Perry black hole backgrounds with small angular momenta. The Myers-Perry space-times are generalizations of higher dimensional Kerr backgrounds where additional planes of rotation are availabile while still maintaining axial symmetry. Once it is determined that all trapped geodesics have constant $r$, the method developed by Tataru and the fourth author, which perturbs off of the Schwarzschild case by using a pseudodifferential multiplier, can be adapted.

The Strauss conjecture on Kerr black hole backgrounds

We examine solutions to semilinear wave equations on black hole backgrounds and give a proof of an analog of the Strauss conjecture on the Schwarzschild and Kerr, with small angular momentum, black hole backgrounds. The key estimates are a class of weighted Strichartz estimates, which are used near infinity where the metrics can be viewed as small perturbations of the Minkowski metric, and a localized energy estimate on the black hole background, which handles the behavior in the remaining compact set.

Sharp local smoothing for manifolds with smooth inflection transmission

We consider a family of spherically symmetric, asymptotically Euclidean manifolds with two trapped sets, one which is unstable and one which is semi-stable. The phase space structure is that of an inflection transmission set. We prove a sharp local smoothing estimate for the linear Schrödinger equation with a loss which depends on how flat the manifold is near each of the trapped sets. The result interpolates between the family of similar estimates in \cite{ChWu-lsm}. As a consequence of the techniques of proof, we also show a sharp high energy resolvent estimate with a polynomial loss depending on how flat the manifold is near each of the trapped sets.

Quasilinear Schrödinger equations II: Small data and cubic nonlinearities

In part I of this project we examined low regularity local well-posedness for generic quasilinear Schrödinger equations with small data. This improved, in the small data regime, the preceding results of Kenig, Ponce, and Vega as well as Kenig, Ponce, Rolvung, and Vega. In the setting of quadratic interactions, the (translation invariant) function spaces which were utilized incorporated an $l^1$ summability over cubes in order to account for Mizohata's integrability condition, which is a necessary condition for the $L^2$ well-posedness for the linearized equation. For cubic interactions, this integrability condition meshes better with the inherent $L^2$ nature of the Schrödinger equation, and such summability is not required. Thus we are able to prove small data well-posedness in $H^s$ spaces.

These results represent improvements of the pioneering works by Kenig-Ponce-Vega and Kenig-Ponce-Rolvung-Vega, where viscosity methods were used to prove existence of solutions in very high regularity spaces. Our arguments here are purely dispersive. The function spaces in which we show existence are constructed in ways motivated by the results of Mizohata, Ichinose, Doi, and others, including the authors.

The lifespan for 3-dimensional quasilinear wave equations in exterior domains

This article focuses on long-time existence for quasilinear wave equations with small initial data in exterior domains. The nonlinearity is permitted to fully depend on the solution at the quadratic level, rather than just the first and second derivatives of the solution. The corresponding lifespan bound in the boundaryless case is due to Lindblad, and Du and Zhou first proved such long-time existence exterior to star-shaped obstacles. Here we relax the hypothesis on the geometry and only require that there is a sufficiently rapid decay of local energy for the linear homogeneous wave equation, which permits some domains that contain trapped rays. The key step is to prove useful energy estimates involving the scaling vector field for which the approach of the second author and Sogge provides guidance.
