Nonlinear bound states on weakly homogeneous spaces

We prove the existence of ground state solutions for a class of nonlinear elliptic equations, arising in the production of standing wave solutions to an associated family of nonlinear Schrödinger equations. We examine two constrained minimization problems, which give rise to such solutions. One yields what we call $F_λ$-minimizers, the other energy minimizers. We produce such ground state solutions on a class of Riemannian manifolds called weakly homogeneous spaces, and establish smoothness, positivity, and decay properties. We also identify classes of Riemannian manifolds with no such minimizers, and classes for which essential uniqueness of positive solutions to the associated elliptic PDE fails.

Price's Law on Nonstationary Spacetimes

In this article we study the pointwise decay properties of solutions to the wave equation on a class of nonstationary asymptotically flat backgrounds in three space dimensions. Under the assumption that uniform energy bounds and a weak form of local energy decay hold forward in time we establish a $t^{-3}$ local uniform decay rate (Price's law \cite{MR0376103}) for linear waves. As a corollary, we also prove Price's law for certain small perturbations of the Kerr metric. This result was previously established by the second author in \cite{Tat} on stationary backgrounds. The present work was motivated by the problem of nonlinear stability of the Kerr/Schwarzschild solutions for the vacuum Einstein equations, which seems to require a more robust approach to proving linear decay estimates.

Localized energy estimates for wave equations on high dimensional Schwarzschild space-times

The localized energy estimate for the wave equation is known to be a fairly robust measure of dispersion. Recent analogs on the $(1+3)$-dimensional Schwarzschild space-time have played a key role in a number of subsequent results, including a proof of Price's law. In this article, we explore similar localized energy estimates for wave equations on $(1+n)$-dimensional hyperspherical Schwarzschild space-times.

Wave packet parametrices for evolutions governed by PDO's with rough symbols

In this note, we consider wave packet parametrices for Schrodinger-like evolution equations. Under an integrability condition along the flow, we prove that the flow is then globally well-defined and bilipschitz. Under an additional smallness assumption, we prove that the kernel of the phase space operator decays rapidly away from the graph of the Hamilton flow. This can be used to prove that smoothness is preserved for finite times by the flow of the equation.

Global existence for high dimensional quasilinear wave equations exterior to star-shaped obstacles

We study long time existence for high dimensional quasilinear wave equations exterior to star-shaped obstacles. In particular, we obtain exterior domain analogs of the four dimensional results of Hörmander where the nonlinearity is permitted to depend on the solution not just its first and second derivatives. Previous proofs in exterior domains omitted this dependence as it did not mesh well with the energy methods in use.

Strichartz estimates on Schwarzschild black hole backgrounds

We study dispersive properties for the wave equation in the Schwarzschild space-time. The first result we obtain is a local energy estimate. This is then used, following the spirit of earlier work of Metcalfe-Tataru, in order to establish global-in-time Strichartz estimates. A considerable part of the paper is devoted to a precise analysis of solutions near the trapping region, namely the photon sphere.

On Abstract Strichartz Estimates and the Strauss Conjecture for Nontrapping Obstacles

The purpose of this paper is to show how local energy decay estimates for certain linear wave equations involving compact perturbations of the standard Laplacian lead to optimal global existence theorems for the corresponding small amplitude nonlinear wave equations with power nonlinearities. To achieve this goal, at least for spatial dimensions $n=3$ and 4, we shall show how the aforementioned linear decay estimates can be combined with "abstract Strichartz" estimates for the free wave equation to prove corresponding estimates for the perturbed wave equation when $n\ge3$. As we shall see, we are only partially successful in the latter endeavor when the dimension is equal to two, and therefore, at present, our applications to nonlinear wave equations in this case are limited.

Strichartz estimates and local smoothing estimates for asymptotically flat Schrödinger equations

In this article we study global-in-time Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger evolution corresponding to long-range perturbations of the Euclidean Laplacian. This is a natural continuation of a recent article of the third author, where it is proved that local smoothing estimates imply Strichartz estimates. In the aforementioned paper, the third author proved the local smoothing estimates for small perturbations of the Laplacian. Here we consider the case of large perturbations in three increasingly favorable scenarios: (i) without non-trapping assumptions we prove estimates outside a compact set modulo a lower order spatially localized error term, (ii) with non-trapping assumptions we prove global estimates modulo a lower order spatially localized error term, and (iii) for time independent operators with no resonance or eigenvalue at the bottom of the spectrum we prove global estimates for the projection onto the continuous spectrum.

Global existence of null-form wave equations in exterior domains

We provide a proof of global existence of solutions to quasilinear wave equations satisfying the null condition in certain exterior domains. In particular, our proof does not require estimation of the fundamental solution for the free wave equation. We instead rely upon a class of Keel-Smith-Sogge estimates for the perturbed wave equation. Using this, a notable simplification is made as compared to previous works concerning wave equations in exterior domains: one no longer needs to distinguish the scaling vector field from the other admissible vector fields.

Elastic waves in exterior domains, Part II: Global existence with a null structure

In this article, we prove that solutions to a problem in nonlinear elasticity corresponding to small initial displacements exist globally in the exterior of a nontrapping obstacle. The medium is assumed to be homogeneous, isotropic, and hyperelastic, and the nonlinearity is assumed to satisfy a null condition. The techniques contained herein would allow for more complicated geometries provided that there is a sufficient decay of local energy for the linearized problem.

Almost global existence for quasilinear wave equations in waveguides with Neumann boundary conditions

In this paper, we prove almost global existence of solutions to certain quasilinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities in infinite homogeneous waveguides with Neumann boundary conditions. We use a Galerkin method to expand the Laplacian of the compact base in terms of its eigenfunctions. For those terms corresponding to zero modes, we obtain decay using analogs of estimates of Klainerman and Sideris. For the nonzero modes, estimates for Klein-Gordon equations, which provide better decay, are available.

Paraproducts in One and Several Parameters

For multiparameter bilinear paraproduct operators $B$ we prove the estimate $$ B: L^p X L^q --> L^r, 1<p,q\le{}\infty. $$ Here, $1/p+1/q=1/r$ and special attention is paid to the case of $0<r<1$. (Note that the families of multiparameter paraproducts are much richer than in the one parameter case.) These estimates are the essential step in the version of the multiparameter Coifman-Meyer theorem proved by C. Muscalu, J. Pipher, T. Tao, and C. Thiele. We offer a different proof of these inequalities.

Nonlinear hyperbolic equations in infinite homogeneous waveguides

In this paper we prove global and almost global existence theorems for nonlinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities in infinite homogeneous waveguides. We can handle both the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions and Neumann boundary conditions. In the case of Neumann boundary conditions we need to assume a natural nonlinear Neumann condition on the quasilinear terms. The results that we obtain are sharp in terms of the assumptions on the dimensions for the global existence results and in terms of the lifespan for the almost global results. For nonlinear wave equations, in the case where the infinite part of the waveguide has spatial dimension three, the hypotheses in the theorem concern whether or not the Laplacian for the compact base of the waveguide has a zero mode or not.

Global existence for Dirichlet-wave equations with quadratic nonlinearties in high dimensions

We prove global existence of solutions to quasilinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities exterior to nontrapping obstacles in spatial dimensions four and higher. This generalizes a result of Shibata and Tsutsumi in spatial dimensions greater than or equal to six. The technique of proof would allow for more complicated geometries provided that an appropriate local energy decay exists for the associated linear wave equation.

Global existence of solutions to multiple speed systems of quasilinear wave equations in exterior domains

In this paper we prove global existence for certain multispeed Dirichlet-wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities outside of obstacles. We assume the natural null condition for systems of quasilinear wave equations with multiple speeds. The null condition only puts restrictions on the self-interactions of each wave family. We use the method of commuting vector fields and weighted space-time $L^2$ estimates.
