Mesoscopic redundancy for dynamical frames generated by atomic singular model operators

Consider the compressed shift $T=P_{K_θ}M_z|_{K_θ}$ on $K_θ=H^2\ominusθH^2$ associated with the atomic singular inner function $θ(z)=\exp(-a(ζ+z)/(ζ-z))$, $a>0$ and $|ζ|=1$. Let $k_0=P_{K_θ}1$ and define real powers $T^s$ using a holomorphic logarithm near the singleton spectrum of $T$. For any temporal multisequence $\mathsf S=(s_k)_{k\in I}\subset[0,\infty)$ with uniformly bounded numbers of samples in unit intervals, we prove that $\{T^{s_k}k_0:k\in I\}$ is a frame if and only if $\mathsf S$ is Kummer-thick: the frequencies $ω(s_k)=\sqrt{8s_k+4}$, weighted by $1/ω(s_k)$, have uniformly positive total mass in every sufficiently distant interval of some fixed length. Equivalently, the occupied unit cells fill a fixed positive proportion of every window $[N-C\sqrt N,N+C\sqrt N]$ for some $C>0$ and all sufficiently large $N$. The proof combines a Volterra transmutation into Bessel waves with the Fourier--Bessel Logvinenko--Sereda theorem.

Finite-orbit obstructions for multipliers on the polydisk

We study the closed spans of finitely many joint orbits of holomorphic multipliers on the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb D^d)$ of the polydisk. If fewer than $d$ symbols are used, every such span has infinite codimension. The symbols may be unbounded, provided that all orbit vectors belong to the Hardy space. We give two elementary proofs. The first uses common level sets and independent point evaluations; for bounded symbols, these evaluations yield joint adjoint eigenvectors. The second uses finite Taylor sections and the nilpotent structure of truncated convolution, also known as the Jury product. For $r$ generators and $q<d$ symbols, the orbit dimension on a cube of side $n$ is $O(n^q)$, whereas the ambient dimension is $n^d$. In the bidisk we obtain the explicit codimension bound $MN-r(M+N-1)$, which is sharp for a single orbit. The coordinate multipliers attain the parameter threshold. We also explain how these obstructions relate to kernel interpolation and the established representation of dynamical frames by compressed shifts on model spaces.

Sectorial Finitely Generated Dynamical Frames

We study frames of unilateral iterations generated by finitely many vectors under an invertible bounded operator $T$. Suppose that the spectrum of $T$ lies in $\{ρe^{it}:0<ρ\le1,\ |t|\le c\}$, where $c<π$, and that its essential spectrum lies in $\{e^{it}:|t|\le c_{\mathrm e}\}$, where $0\le c_{\mathrm e}\le c$. Real powers are defined through the principal logarithm. Our structural result identifies fractional-orbit synthesis, up to an invertible map and a compact perturbation, with synthesis of projected vector-valued exponentials on an arc containing the essential spectrum. Semi-Fredholm properties and Fredholm index therefore transfer. For a uniformly separated temporal set $Λ$, this reduction gives a frame when its one-sided lower uniform density satisfies $D_+^-(Λ)>c_{\mathrm e}/π$ and its logarithmic block density satisfies $L(Λ)>c/π$. Completeness at the latter threshold requires only an invertible operator with spectrum in the corresponding angular sector and a complete integer multiorbit. At $L(Λ)>2c/π$, the complement property is equivalent to a finite condition in channel-cyclic subspaces, with real phase-retrieval consequences. Generalized divided differences admit the same compact reduction and the analogous frame theorem with multiplicities counted. For arbitrary one-point-per-cell sampling with cell length $r$, the sufficient raw-sampling conditions are $rc<π$ and $2rc_{\mathrm e}<π$. Thus, the full range $rc<π$ holds for raw samples when the essential spectrum is contained in $\{1\}$; over the unrestricted class, the sharp universal range is $rc<π/2$. Divided-difference preconditioning restores $rc<π$ for all operators considered and converts exact collisions into logarithmic-derivative data.

Unitarily invariant norms

This survey paper provides a comprehensive study of unitarily invariant norms on the algebra of $n \times n$ matrices. This investigation leads naturally to the theory of symmetric gauge functions, a class of norms on $\mathbb{R}^n$ characterized by invariance and monotonicity properties. We develop the necessary framework by examining absolute and monotone norms and establishing their equivalence, thereby offering additional insight into the classical Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya theorem on majorization. The theory of majorization is further explored through its connections with doubly stochastic matrices, convexity, and fundamental results such as the Birkhoff and Radó theorems, as well as König's theorem on term rank and line rank. We also study weak majorization and derive a characterization that plays a crucial role in proving the monotonicity of symmetric gauge functions. On the spectral side, we review key results in matrix analysis, including the Courant-Fischer min-max theorem, the Cauchy interlacing theorem, and Ky Fan's majorization theorem, along with a weak subadditivity result for singular values of arbitrary matrices. These ingredients culminate in a detailed proof of von Neumann's characterization of unitarily invariant norms, which provides a complete and elegant description of this class of norms. Some illustrative examples, as well as the Ky Fan domination principle as an application, are also presented.

Frames from Functional Calculus

We introduce frames generated by applying families of functions to a diagonal operator through functional calculus, with diagonal entries forming a Carleson interpolating sequence. First, for separated spectra contained in a Stolz domain and an angular sector, we prove that systems of fractional operator powers remain frames whenever the step size satisfies the natural angular restriction. This extends earlier results for positive real spectra and permits noninteger powers. We also show that the angular restriction is sharp in general. Second, we give an $\ell^2$-perturbation criterion for frames generated by more general continuous functions, assuming a density condition on a curve containing the spectrum. The results broaden the class of structured frames available in dynamical sampling and related operator-orbit problems.

Norm of infinite doubly stochastic matrices

In finite dimensions, every doubly stochastic matrix has the $\ell^p$-operator norm equal to $1$ for all $1 \le p \le \infty$. However, in the infinite-dimensional setting, this property may fail since the norm can be strictly smaller than $1$ when $1<p<\infty$. In this paper, a complete characterization of infinite doubly stochastic matrices for which the norm remains equal to $1$ is obtained. More precisely, for $1<p<\infty$, it is shown that $$ \|D\|_{\ell^p(I)\to\ell^p(I)}=1 \quad\iff\quad Θ(D^*D)=1, $$ where $Θ$ measures the maximal average mass of a finite square submatrix. Thus, the norm is equal to $1$ precisely when the matrix contains arbitrarily large finite regions in which it behaves almost like a finite doubly stochastic matrix. The proof uses a Cheeger-type argument, highlighting a natural connection with ideas from spectral graph theory.

On the convergence of doubly stochastic Markov chains

We characterize the asymptotic behavior of time-homogeneous doubly stochastic Markov chains. Our investigation revolves around understanding the dynamics of products of doubly stochastic matrices, which in turn allows us to fully characterize three distinct behaviors: cyclicity, convergence towards a special equilibrium matrix, and divergence. Notably, we introduce a novel and comprehensive sufficient condition for the convergence of an infinite product of doubly stochastic matrices.

A Schwarz-Jack lemma, circularly symmetric domains and numerical ranges

We prove a Schwarz-Jack lemma for holomorphic functions on the unit disk with the property that their maximum modulus on each circle about the origin is attained at a point on the positive real axis. With the help of this result, we establish monotonicity and convexity properties of conformal maps of circularly symmetric and bi-circularly symmetric domains. As an application, we give a new proof of Crouzeix's theorem that the numerical range of any $2\times 2$ matrix is a $2$-spectral set for the matrix. Unlike other proofs, our approach does not depend on the explicit formula for the conformal mapping of an ellipse onto the unit disk.

Oppenheim--Schur inequalities for causal products

We establish a class of Oppenheim--Schur-type inequalities for the convolutional Jury product of positive semidefinite matrices. These results extend to a causal convolutional setting the classical Schur and Oppenheim inequalities associated with the Hadamard product. Our approach highlights structural parallels between entrywise and convolution-based matrix operations, revealing how positivity constraints interact with causality. Building on this perspective, we introduce a broader family of causal matrix products and prove unified inequalities that simultaneously recover the classical Schur and Oppenheim bounds as well as their convolutional Jury counterparts. These results provide a common framework for understanding positivity-preserving matrix products and suggest further connections between classical matrix analysis and causal operator structures.

The conjugate orbit of a unitary operator

This paper discusses various aspects of the collection of unitary operators $CUC$, where $U$ is a fixed unitary operator on a complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and $C$ varies over the set of all conjugations on $\mathcal{H}$ (antilinear, isometric, involutions). We call this class of unitary operators, the {\em conjugate orbit }of $U$ and denote it by $\mathfrak{O}_c(U)$. We will see that $U^{*}$, the Hilbert space adjoint of $U$, always belongs to $\mathfrak{O}_c(U)$, while $U$ belongs to $\mathfrak{O}_c(U)$ only when $U$ is unitarily equivalent to $U^{*}$, making $U$ a member of $\mathfrak{O}_c(U)$ an uncommon event. We completely describe the conjugate orbit of the classical bilateral shift and discuss when a unitary multiplication operator on the classical Lebesgue space of the unit circle belongs to this conjugate orbit. We also broaden this discussion to include the bilateral shifts of higher multiplicity which, via unitary equivalence, makes connections to other interesting unitary operators such as the translation and dilation operators on the Lebesgue space of the real line. Finite unitary matrices provide us with a rich source of examples of conjugate unitary orbits to discuss. In particular, we determine which diagonal matrices, if any, belong to the conjugate orbit of a fixed unitary matrix. Closely related to the finite unitary matrices are the diagonalizable unitary operators with respect to some, possibly infinite, orthonormal basis. We give a large class of variations of these unitary operators that belong to the conjugate orbit and establish a connection to the classical Fourier--Plancherel and Hilbert transforms. Finally, we develop a model for a unitary operator using real Hilbert spaces and use it to describe the conjugate orbit as well as revisit some of our previous discussions in another light.

Schauder Basis with Finite Blaschke Products

We construct a Schauder basis for the space $Hol(\mathbb D)$, the space of holomorphic functions on the closed unit disk, consisting entirely of finite Blaschke products. The expansion coefficients are given explicitly. Our result remains valid when $Hol(\mathbb D)$ is equipped with a broader class of norms satisfying natural structural conditions. These conditions are satisfied by norms of classical function spaces such as the Hardy spaces $H^p$ ($1\leq p\leq \infty$), the weighted Bergman spaces $A_α^p$ ($1\leq p\leq \infty$, $α>-1$), and BMOA. We also establish the optimality of this framework by proving that such a basis cannot exist in larger spaces, such as the Hardy space $H^p$ and the disc algebra $A(\mathbb D)$.

Orthogonal projections in the local Dirichlet spaces

We present an explicit formula for the orthogonal projection onto the subspace of analytic polynomials of degree at most $n$ in the local Dirichlet space $D_μ$ , where the positive measure $μ$ consists of a finite number of Dirac measures located at points on the unit circle $\mathbb T$. This result has two key aspects: first, while it is known that polynomials are dense in $D_μ$ , this approach offers a concrete linear approximation scheme within the space. Second, due to the orthogonality of the polynomials involved, the scheme is qualitative, as the distance of an arbitrary function $f\in D_μ$ to the projected subspace is explicitly determined.

Sharp lower bounds for generalized operator products

We consider general bilinear products defined by positive semidefinite matrices. Typically non-commutative, non-associative, and non-unital, these products preserve positivity and include the classical Hadamard, Kronecker, and convolutional products as special cases. We prove that every such product satisfies a sharp nonzero lower bound in the Loewner order, generalizing previous results of Vybíral [Adv. Math., 2020] and Khare [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 2021] that were obtained in the special case of the Hadamard product. Our results naturally extend to Hilbert spaces for a family of products parametrized by positive trace-class operators, providing a lower bound in the Loewner order for such general products, including for the Hilbert tensor product.

Functional Calculi, Positivity, and Convolution of Matrices

Convolution admits a natural formulation as a functional operation on matrices. Motivated by the functional and entrywise calculi, this leads to a framework in which convolution defines a matrix transform that preserves positivity. Within this setting, we establish results parallel to the classical theories of Pólya--Szegő, Schoenberg, Rudin, Loewner, and Horn in the context of entrywise calculus. The structure of our transform is governed by a Cayley--Hamilton-type theory valid in commutative rings of characteristic zero, together with a novel polynomial-matrix identity specific to convolution. Beyond these analytic aspects, we uncover an intrinsic connection between convolution and the Bruhat order on the symmetric group, illuminating the combinatorial aspect of this functional operation. This work extends the classical theory of entrywise positivity preservers and operator monotone functions into the convolutional setting.

Weighted composition operators on de Branges-Rovnyak spaces

In this paper, we characterize the boundedness and the compactness of weighted composition operators acting on a de Branges-Rovnyak space $\mathcal H(b)$, where the symbol $b$ is a rational function in the unit ball of $H^\infty$ that is not a finite Blaschke product. Our results extend those of [2] by exploiting a close relationship between weighted composition operators on $\mathcal H(b)$ and their counterparts on the Hardy space $H^2$.

Infinitely supported harmonically weighted Dirichlet spaces which are de Branges Rovnyak spaces

Harmonically weighted Dirichlet spaces $\mathcal{D}_μ$ and de Branges_Rovnyak spaces $\mathcal{H}(b)$ are two fundamental structures in analytic function theory exhibiting rich and often complementary properties. The question of when these spaces coincide, first raised and solved in Sarason's groundbreaking work in 1997 when $μ$ is a single Dirac mass, is thus of fundamental importance in operator theory and analytic function spaces. In this paper, we focus on spaces $\mathcal{H}(b)$ with symbol $b = (1+u)/2$, where $u$ is a one-component inner function. While previous results extended Sarason's work to finitely supported measures $μ$, the symbols we consider here give a natural framework to go beyond finiteness of the support. In our setting, we provide a complete characterization of measures $μ$ for which $\mathcal{H}(b) = \mathcal{D}_μ$, thereby resolving the long-standing open problem of constructing harmonically weighted Dirichlet spaces $\mathcal{D}_μ$ associated with measures $μ$ of infinite support that are also $\mathcal{H}(b)$ spaces. As a central ingredient to prove this result and which is of independent interest, we establish a $T(1)$-type result for the Cauchy transform on $L^2(σ)$, where $σ$ denotes the Clark measure associated with a one-component inner function $u$. Another notable result is a perturbation theorem for one-component inner functions that allows us to present a large class of function spaces satisfying $\mathcal{H}(b)=\mathcal{D}_μ$. Furthermore, we settle the Brown--Shields conjecture within this setting.

Double-layer potentials, configuration constants and applications to numerical ranges

Given a compact convex planar domain $Ω$ with non-empty interior, the classical Neumann's configuration constant $c_{\mathbb{R}}(Ω)$ is the norm of the Neumann-Poincaré operator $K_Ω$ acting on the space of continuous real-valued functions on the boundary $\partial Ω$, modulo constants. We investigate the related operator norm $c_{\mathbb{C}}(Ω)$ of $K_Ω$ on the corresponding space of complex-valued functions, and the norm $a(Ω)$ on the subspace of analytic functions. This change requires introduction of techniques much different from the ones used in the classical setting. We prove the equality $c_{\mathbb{R}}(Ω) = c_{\mathbb{C}}(Ω)$, the analytic Neumann-type inequality $a(Ω) < 1$, and provide various estimates for these quantities expressed in terms of the geometry of $Ω$. We apply our results to estimates for the holomorphic functional calculus of operators on Hilbert space of the type $\|p(T)\| \leq K \sup_{z \in Ω} |p(z)|$, where $p$ is a polynomial and $Ω$ is a domain containing the numerical range of the operator $T$. Among other results, we show that the well-known Crouzeix-Palencia bound $K \leq 1 + \sqrt{2}$ can be improved to $K \leq 1 + \sqrt{1 + a(Ω)}$. In the case that $Ω$ is an ellipse, this leads to an estimate of $K$ in terms of the eccentricity of the ellipse.

The spectral analysis of the difference quotient operator on model spaces

We conduct a spectral analysis of the difference quotient operator $Q^u_ζ$, associated with a boundary point $ζ\in \partial \mathbb{D}$, on the model space $K_u$. We describe the operator's spectrum and provide both upper and lower estimates for its norm, and furthermore discussing the sharpness of these bounds. Notably, the upper estimate offers a new characterization of the one-component property for inner function.
