The Cesàro operator on local Dirichlet spaces

The family of Cesàro operators $σ_n^α$, $n \geq 0$ and $α\in [0,1]$, consists of finite rank operators on Banach spaces of analytic functions on the open unit disc. In this work, we investigate these operators as they act on the local Dirichlet spaces $\mathcal{D}_ζ$. It is well-established that they provide a linear approximation scheme when $α> \frac{1}{2}$, with the threshold value $α= \frac{1}{2}$ being optimal. We strengthen this result by deriving precise asymptotic values for the norm of these operators when $α\leq \frac{1}{2}$, corresponding to the breakdown of approximation schemes. Additionally, we establish upper and lower estimates for the norm when $α> \frac{1}{2}$.

On the Crouzeix ratio for $N\times N$ matrices

The Crouzeix ratio $ψ(A)$ of an $N\times N$ complex matrix $A$ is the supremum of $\|p(A)\|$ taken over all polynomials $p$ such that $|p|\le 1$ on the numerical range of $A$. It is known that $ψ(A)\le 1+\sqrt{2}$, and it is conjectured that $ψ(A)\le 2$. In this note, we show that $ψ(A)\le C_N$, where $C_N$ is a constant depending only on $N$ and satisfying $C_N<1+\sqrt{2}$. The proof is based on a study of the continuity properties of the map $A\mapsto ψ(A)$.

Conjugations of Unitary operators, I

If $U$ is a unitary operator on a separable complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, an application of the spectral theorem says there is a conjugation $C$ on $\mathcal{H}$ (an antilinear, involutive, isometry on $\mathcal{H}$) for which $ C U C = U^{*}.$ In this paper, we fix a unitary operator $U$ and describe all of the conjugations $C$ which satisfy this property. As a consequence of our results, we show that a subspace is hyperinvariant for $U$ if and only if it is invariant for any conjugation $C$ for which $CUC = U^{*}$.

Conjugations of Unitary Operators, II

For a given unitary operator $U$ on a separable complex Hilbert space $\h$, we describe the set $\mathscr{C}_{c}(U)$ of all conjugations $C$ (antilinear, isometric, and involutive maps) on $\h$ for which $C U C = U$. As this set might be empty, we also show that $\mathscr{C}_{c}(U) \not = \varnothing$ if and only if $U$ is unitarily equivalent to $U^{*}$.

Characterization of frames for source recovery from dynamical samples

In this paper, we address the problem of recovering constant source terms in a discrete dynamical system represented by $x_{n+1} = Ax_n + w$, where $x_n$ is the $n$-th state in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, $A$ is a bounded linear operator in $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$, and $w$ is a source term within a closed subspace $W$ of $\HH$. Our focus is on the stable recovery of $w$ using time-space sample measurements formed by inner products with vectors from a Bessel system $\mathcal{G} \subset \mathcal{H}$. We establish the necessary and sufficient conditions for the recovery of $w$ from these measurements, independent of the unknown initial state $x_0$ and for any $w \in W$. This research is particularly relevant to applications such as environmental monitoring, where precise source identification is critical.

On the Geometry of the Birkhoff Polytope. I. The operator $\ell^p_n$-norms

The geometry of the Birkhoff polytope, i.e., the compact convex set of all $n \times n$ doubly stochastic matrices, has been an active subject of research. While its faces, edges and facets as well as its volume have been intensely studied, other geometric characteristics such as the center and radius were left off, despite their natural uses in some areas of mathematics. In this paper, we completely characterize the Chebyshev center and the Chebyshev radius of the Birkhoff polytope associated with the metrics induced by the operator $\ell^p_n$-norms for the range $1 \leq p \leq \infty$.

On the Geometry of the Birkhoff Polytope. II. The Schatten $p$-norms

In the first of this series of two articles, we studied some geometrical aspects of the Birkhoff polytope, the compact convex set of all $n \times n$ doubly stochastic matrices, namely the Chebyshev center, and the Chebyshev radius of the Birkhoff polytope associated with metrics induced by the operator norms from $\ell_n^p$ to $\ell_n^p$ for $1 \leq p \leq \infty$. In the present paper, we take another look at those very questions, but for a different family of matrix norms, namely the Schatten $p$-norms, for $1 \leq p < \infty$. While studying these properties, the intrinsic connection to the minimal trace, which naturally appears in the assignment problem, is also established.

Nonlinear expansions in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces

We introduce an expansion scheme in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces, which as a special case covers the celebrated Blaschke unwinding series expansion for analytic functions. The expansion scheme is further generalized to cover Hardy spaces $H^p$, $1<p<\infty$, viewed as Banach spaces of analytic functions with bounded evaluation functionals. In this setting a dichotomy is more transparent: depending on the multipliers used, the expansion of $f \in H^p$ converges either to $f$ in $H^p$-norm or to its projection onto a model space generated by the corresponding multipliers. Some explicit instances of the general expansion scheme, which are not covered by the previously known methods, are also discussed.

On a question of Erdős on doubly stochastic matrices

In a celebrated paper of Marcus and Ree (1959), it was shown that if $A=[a_{ij}]$ is an $n \times n$ doubly stochastic matrix, then there is a permutation $σ\in S_n$ such that $\sum_{i,j=1}^{n} a_{i,j}^{2} \leq \sum_{i=1}^{n} a_{i,σ(i)}$. Erdős asked for which doubly stochastic matrices the inequality is saturated. Although Marcus and Ree provided some insight for the set of solutions, the question appears to have fallen into oblivion. Our goal is to provide a complete answer in the particular, yet non-trivial, case when $n=3$.

Weighted averages of $\ell^p$ sequences

The objective of the present paper is to establish three Hardy-type inequalities in which the arithmetic mean over a sequence of non-negative real numbers is replaced by some weighted arithmetic mean over some nested subsets of the given sequence of numbers. One of these inequalities stems from a calculation in a paper of Bouthat and Mashreghi on semi-infinite matrices.

Summability and duality

We formalize the observation that the same summability methods converge in a Banach space $X$ and its dual $X^*$. At the same time we determine conditions under which these methods converge in the weak and weak*-topologies on $X$ and $X^*$ respectively. We also derive a general limitation theorem, which yields a necessary condition for the convergence of a summability method in $X$. These results are then illustrated by applications to a wide variety of function spaces, including spaces of continuous functions, Lebesgue spaces, the disk algebra, Hardy and Bergman spaces, the BMOA space, the Bloch space, and de Branges-Rovnyak spaces. Our approach shows that all these applications flow from just two abstract theorems.

Asymptotically equicontinuous sequences of operators and a Banach-Steinhaus type theorem

We introduce the notion of an asymptotically equicontinuous sequence of linear operators, and use it to prove the following result. If $X,Y$ are topological vector spaces, if $T_n,T:X\to Y$ are continuous linear maps, and if $D$ is a dense subset of $X$, then the following statements are equivalent: (i) $T_nx\to Tx$ for all $x\in X$, and (ii) $T_n x\to Tx$ for all $x\in D$ and the sequence $(T_n)$ is asymptotically equicontinuous.

Square roots of some classical operators

In this paper we give complete descriptions of the set of square roots of certain classical operators, often providing specific formulas. The classical operators included in this discussion are the square of the unilateral shift, the Volterra operator, certain compressed shifts, the unilateral shift plus its adjoint, the Hilbert matrix, and the Cesàro operator.

Weakly multiplicative distributions and weighted Dirichlet spaces

We show that if $u$ is a compactly supported distribution on the complex plane such that, for every pair of entire functions $f,g$, \[ \langle u,f\overline{g}\rangle=\langle u,f\rangle\langle u,\overline{g}\rangle, \] then $u$ is supported at a single point. As an application, we complete the classification of all weighted Dirichlet spaces on the unit disk that are de Branges-Rovnyak spaces by showing that, for such spaces, the weight is necessarily a superharmonic function.

The $p$-norm of circulant matrices

In this note we study the induced $p$-norm of circulant matrices $A(n,\pm a, b)$, acting as operators on the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$. For circulant matrices whose entries are nonnegative real numbers, in particular for $A(n,a,b)$, we provide an explicit formula for the $p$-norm, $1 \leq p \leq \infty$. The calculation for $A(n,-a,b)$ is more complex. The 2-norm is precisely determined. As for the other values of $p$, two different categories of upper and lower bounds are obtained. These bounds are optimal at the end points (i.e. $p=1$ and $p = \infty$) as well as at $p=2$.

The critical point and the $p$-norm of $A_s$ and $C$-matrices

The $L$-matrix $A_s=[1/(n+s)]$ was introduced in \cite{MRtmp}. As a surprising property, we showed that its 2-norm is constant for $s \geq s_0$, where the critical point $s_0$ is unknown but relies in the interval $(1/4,1/2)$. In this note, using some delicate calculations we sharpen this result by improving the upper and lower bounds of the interval surrounding $s_0$. Moreover, we show that the same property persists for the $p$-norm of $A_s$ matrices. We also obtain the 2-norm of a family of $C$-matrices with lacunary sequences.

Power-series summability methods in de Branges-Rovnyak spaces

We show that there exists a de Branges-Rovnyak space $\mathcal{H}(b)$ on the unit disk containing a function $f$ with the following property: even though $f$ can be approximated by polynomials in $\mathcal{H}(b)$, neither the Taylor partial sums of $f$ nor their Cesàro, Abel, Borel or logarithmic means converge to $f$ in $\mathcal{H}(b)$. A key tool is a new abstract result showing that, if one regular summability method includes another for scalar sequences, then it automatically does so for certain Banach-space-valued sequences too.

A Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko theorem for reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces

We establish the following Hilbert-space analogue of the Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko theorem. If $\mathcal{H}$ is a reproducing kernel Hilbert space with a normalized complete Pick kernel, and if $Λ$ is a linear functional on $\mathcal{H}$ such that $Λ(1)=1$ and $Λ(f)\ne0$ for all cyclic functions $f\in\mathcal{H}$, then $Λ$ is multiplicative, in the sense that $Λ(fg)=Λ(f)Λ(g)$ for all $f,g\in\mathcal{H}$ such that $fg\in\mathcal{H}$. Moreover $Λ$ is automatically continuous. We give examples to show that the theorem fails if the hypothesis of a complete Pick kernel is omitted. We also discuss conditions under which $Λ$ has to be a point evaluation.
