Zero-cycles on surfaces dominated by products of hyperelliptic curves

Conditionally on the finiteness of the relevant Tate-Shafarevich groups, we prove a local-to-global result for zero-cycles of degree $1$ on the surfaces given by $y^2 = f_1(x_1)f_2(x_2)$, where the polynomials $f_1$ and $f_2$ are algebraically general. The proof combines the fibration method, parity results for $2$-Selmer groups in quadratic twist families, and a variant of a theorem of Morgan on the variation of the Cassels-Tate pairing.

Divisibility phenomena in motivic Bloch--Ogus theory

Let X be a smooth projective variety over a field k. For k separably closed, we prove that the subgroup of unramified classes in the Milnor K-group $K^M_i(k(X))$ of the function field of X is contained in the subgroup of n-divisible elements of $K^M_i(k(X))$ for any integer n invertible in k. This generalizes to a statement for unramified motivic cohomology of arbitrary bidegree. We further show that whenever k is finite or separably closed and l is a prime invertible in k, then all but the last step in the Bloch--Ogus filtration of the motivic cohomology of X are l-divisible up to torsion. Generalizations of this last result to arbitrary quasi-projective k-schemes are also proven.

Certaines fibrations en surfaces quadriques réelles

We consider the question whether a real threefold X fibred into quadric surfaces over the real projective line is stably rational (over R) if the topological space X(R) is connected. We give a counterexample. When all geometric fibres are irreducible, the question is open. We investigate a family of such fibrations for which the intermediate jacobian technique is not available. We produce two independent methods which in many cases enable one to prove decomposition of the diagonal.

For a smooth projective variety X over an arbitrary field k, we discuss the surjectivity of the Albanese map from the Chow group of zero-cycles of degree zero on X to the group of rational points of the Albanese variety of X. Over arithmetic fields, we use Severi-Brauer fibrations to produce examples where the map is not surjective. For varieties X over the complex field, we discuss the question after extension of the complex field to function fields of varieties. This is related to C. Voisin's notion of universal zero-cycle and to rationality questions for rationally connected threefolds.

Variétés réelles connexes non stablement rationnelles

Let $R$ be the field of real Puiseux series. It is a real closed field. We construct the first examples of smooth intersections of two quadrics in $\mathbb{P}_R^5$ and smooth cubic hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}_R^4$ which are not stably rational but for which the space $X(R)$ of $R$-points is semi-algebraically connected. The question of constructing such examples over the field of real numbers $\mathbb{R}$ remains open.

For specific classes of smooth, projective varieties $X$ over a field $k$, we compare two cycle maps on the torsion subgroup $CH^2(X)_{\text{tors} }$ of the second Chow group. The first one goes back to work of S. Bloch (1981), the second one is Jannsen's cycle map into continuous $\ell$-adic cohomology, whose injectivity properties have attracted attention in two recent papers. On the one hand, the comparison gives sufficient hypotheses to guarantee injectivity of Jannsen's cycle map sending $CH^2(X)$ to $H^4_{cont}(X, Z_{\ell}(2))$ on $\ell$-primary torsion. On the other hand, using counterexamples to injectivity of the first map due to Sansuc and the first author (1983), we give examples of smooth, projective, geometrically rational surfaces over a rational function field in one variable over a totally imaginary number field for which Jannsen's map for $\ell=2$ is not injective on $2$-torsion. This answers questions raised in a recent paper.

Lichtenbaum proved that index and period coincide for a curve of genus one over a $p$-adic field. Salberger proved that the Hasse principle holds for a smooth complete intersection of two quadrics $X \subset P^n$ over a number field, if it contains a conic and if $n\geq 5$. Building upon these two results, we extend recent results of Creutz and Viray (2021) on the existence of a quadratic point on intersections of two quadrics over $p$-adic fields and number fields. We then recover Heath-Brown's theorem (2018) that the Hasse principle holds for smooth complete intersections of two quadrics in $P^7$. We also give an alternate proof of a theorem of Iyer and Parimala (2022) on the local-global principle in the case $n=5$.

Local-global principles for constant reductive groups over semi-global fields

We study local-global principles for torsors under reductive linear algebraic groups over semi-global fields; i.e., over one variable function fields over complete discretely valued fields. We provide conditions on the group and the semiglobal field under which the local-global principle holds, and we compute the obstruction to the local-global principle in certain classes of examples. Using our description of the obstruction, we give the first example of a semisimple simply connected group over a semi-global field where the local-global principle fails. Our methods include patching and R-equivalence.

We investigate a strong version of the integral Tate conjecture for 1-cycles on the product of a curve and a surface over a finite field, under the assumption that the surface is geometrically $CH_0$-trivial. By this we mean that over any algebraically closed field extension, the degree map on the zero-dimensional Chow group of the surface is an isomorphism. This applies to Enriques surfaces. When the Néron-Severi group has no torsion, we recover earlier results of A. Pirutka. The results rely on a detailed study of the third unramified cohomology group of specific products of varieties.

Local-global principles for tori over arithmetic curves

In this paper we study local-global principles for tori over semi-global fields, which are one variable function fields over complete discretely valued fields. In particular, we show that for principal homogeneous spaces for tori over the underlying discrete valuation ring, the obstruction to a local-global principle with respect to discrete valuations can be computed using methods coming from patching. We give a sufficient condition for the vanishing of the obstruction, as well as examples were the obstruction is nontrivial or even infinite. A major tool is the notion of a flasque resolution of a torus.

In 1974, D. Coray showed that on a smooth cubic surface with a closed point of degree prime to 3 there exists such a point of degree 1, 4 or 10. We first show how a combination of generisation, specialisation, Bertini theorems and large fields avoids considerations of special cases in his argument. For smooth cubic surfaces with a rational point, we show that any zero-cycle of degree at least 10 is rationally equivalent to an effective cycle. We establish analogues of these results for del Pezzo surfaces of degree 2 and of degree 1. For smooth cubic surfaces without a rational point, we relate the question whether there exists a degree 3 point which is not on a line to the question whether rational points are dense on a del Pezzo surface of degree 1.

Let $k$ be a number field and $U$ a smooth integral $k$-variety. Let $X \to U$ be an abelian scheme. We consider the set $\mathcal{R}$ of rational points $m \in U(k)$ such that the Mordell-Weil rank of the fibre $U_{m}$ is strictly bigger than the Mordell-Weil rank of the generic fibre. We prove the following results. If the $k$-variety $X$ is $k$-unirational, then $\mathcal{R}$ is dense for the Zariski topology on $U$. If $X$ is $k$-rational, then $\mathcal{R}$ is not thin in $U$. This generalizes results of Billard and of Salgado. The main idea goes back to Néron's thesis: use the generic point of the generic fibre of the family.

--------------- We prove that the third unramified cohomology group of a smooth cubic threefold over the function field of a complex curve vanishes. For this, we combine a method of C. Voisin with Galois descent on the codimension $2$ Chow group. As a corollary, we show that the integral Hodge conjecture holds for degree $4$ classes on smooth projective fourfolds equipped with a fibration over a curve, the generic fibre of which is a smooth cubic threefold, with arbitrary singularities on the special fibres.

A method of Gabber (2002) produces unramified cohomology classes in the products of certain varieties with an elliptic curve. The connection between third unramified cohomology and integral Hodge conjecture for codimension 2 cycles (2012, which builds upon results from algebraic K-Theory, then gives many examples of such a product for which this conjecture fails. The special case of the product with an Enriques surface was established by Benoist and Ottem (2018).
