Soliton gases and generalized hydrodynamics

Dynamical equations in generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), a hydrodynamic theory for integrable quantum systems at the Euler scale, take a rather simple form, even though an infinite number of conserved charges are taken into account. We show a remarkable quantum-classical equivalence: we demonstrate the equivalence between the equations of GHD, and the Euler-scale hydrodynamic equations of a new family of classical gases which generalize the gas of hard rods. In this family, the "quasi-particles", upon colliding, jump forward or backward by a distance that depends on their velocities, generalizing the jump forward by the rods' length of the fixed-velocity tracer upon elastic collision of two hard rods. Such velocity-dependent position shifts are characteristics of classical soliton scattering. The emerging hydrodynamics of a quantum integrable model is therefore that of the classical gas of its solitons. This provides a "molecular dynamics" for GHD which is numerically efficient and flexible. This is directly applicable, for instance, to the study of inhomogeneous dynamics in integrable quantum chains and in the Lieb-Liniger model realized in cold-atom experiments.

From Interacting Particles to Equilibrium Statistical Ensembles

We argue that a particle language provides a conceptually simple framework for the description of anomalous equilibration in isolated quantum systems. We address this paradigm in the context of integrable models, which are those with particles that are stable against decay. In particular, we demonstrate that a complete description of equilibrium ensembles for interacting integrable models requires a formulation built from the mode occupation numbers of the underlying particle content, mirroring the case of non-interacting particles. This yields an intuitive physical interpretation of generalized Gibbs ensembles, and reconciles them with the microcanonical ensemble. We explain how previous attempts to identify an appropriate ensemble overlooked an essential piece of information, and provide explicit examples in the context of quantum quenches.

The Quench Action

We give a pedagogical introduction to the methodology of the Quench Action, which is an effective representation for the calculation of time-dependent expectation values of physical operators following a generic out-of-equilibrium state preparation protocol (for example a quantum quench). The representation, originally introduced in [Caux and Essler, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 257203 (2013)], is founded on a mixture of exact data for overlaps together with variational reasonings. It is argued to be quite generally valid and thermodynamically exact for arbitrary times after the quench (from short times all the way up to the steady state), and applicable to a wide class of physically relevant observables. Here, we introduce the method and its language, give an overview of some recent results, suggest a roadmap and offer some perspectives on possible future research directions.

Gold-induced nanowires on the Ge(100) surface yield a 2D, and not a 1D electronic structure

Atomic nanowires on semiconductor surfaces induced by the adsorption of metallic atoms have attracted a lot of attention as possible hosts of the elusive, Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The Au/Ge(100) system in particular is the subject of controversy as to whether the Au-induced nanowires do indeed host exotic, 1D metallic states. We report on a thorough study of the electronic properties of high quality nanowires formed at the Au/Ge(100) surface. High resolution ARPES data show the low-lying Au-induced electronic states to possess a dispersion relation that depends on two orthogonal directions in k-space. Comparison of the E(k$_x$,k$_y$) surface measured using ARPES to tight-binding calculations yields hopping parameters in the two different directions that differ by a factor of two. We find that the larger of the two hopping parameters corresponds, in fact, to the direction perpendicular to the nanowires (t$_{\perp}$). This, the topology of the $E$=$E_F$ contour in k$_{\||}$, and the fact that $t_{\||}$/$t_{\perp}\sim 0.5$ proves that the Au-induced electron pockets possess a 2D, closed Fermi surface, this firmly places the Au/Ge(100) nanowire system outside being a potential hosts of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. We combine these ARPES data with STS measurements of the spatially-resolved electronic structure and find that the spatially straight conduction channels observed up to energies of order one electron volt below the Fermi level do not originate from the Au-induced states seen in the ARPES data. The former are more likely to be associated with bulk Ge states that are localized to the subsurface region. Despite our proof of the 2D nature of the Au-induced nanowire and sub-surface Ge-related states, an anomalous suppression of the density of states at the Fermi level is observed in both the STS and ARPES data, this phenomenon is discussed in the light of the effects of disorder.

Motion of a distinguishable impurity in the Bose gas: Arrested expansion without a lattice and impurity snaking

We consider the real time dynamics of an initially localized distinguishable impurity injected into the ground state of the Lieb-Liniger model. Focusing on the case where integrability is preserved, we numerically compute the time evolution of the impurity density operator in regimes far from analytically tractable limits. We find that the injected impurity undergoes a stuttering motion as it moves and expands. For an initially stationary impurity, the interaction-driven formation of a quasibound state with a hole in the background gas leads to arrested expansion -- a period of quasistationary behavior. When the impurity is injected with a finite center of mass momentum, the impurity moves through the background gas in a snaking manner, arising from a quantum Newton's cradle-like scenario where momentum is exchanged back-and-forth between the impurity and the background gas.

Spinon dynamics in quantum integrable antiferromagnets

The excitations of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin chain in zero field are known as spinons. As pairwise-created fractionalized excitations, spinons are important in the understanding of inelastic neutron scattering experiments in (quasi) one-dimensional materials. In the present work, we consider the real space-time dynamics of spinons originating from a local spin flip on the antiferromagnetic ground state of the (an)isotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 model and the Babujan-Takhtajan spin-1 model. By utilizing algebraic Bethe ansatz methods at finite system size to compute the expectation value of the local magnetization and spin-spin correlations, spinons are visualized as propagating domain walls in the antiferromagnetic spin ordering with anisotropy dependent behavior. The spin-spin correlation after the spin flip displays a light cone, satisfying the Lieb-Robinson bound for the propagation of correlations at the spinon velocity.

Driven impurity in an ultracold 1D Bose gas with intermediate interaction strength

We study a single impurity driven by a constant force through a 1D Bose gas using a Lieb-Liniger based approach. Our calculaton is exact in the interaction amongst the particles in the Bose gas, and is perturbative in the interaction between the gas and the impurity. In contrast to previous studies of this problem, we are able to handle arbitrary interaction strength for the Bose gas. We find very good agreement with recent experiments [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 150601 (2009)].

Quasi-soliton scattering in quantum spin chains

The quantum scattering of magnon bound states in the anisotropic Heisenberg spin chain is shown to display features similar to the scattering of solitons in classical exactly solvable models. Localized colliding Gaussian wave packets of bound magnons are constructed from string solutions of the Bethe equations and subsequently evolved in time, relying on an algebraic Bethe ansatz based framework for the computation of local expectation values in real space-time. The local magnetization profile shows the trajectories of colliding wave packets of bound magnons, which obtain a spatial displacement upon scattering. Analytic predictions on the displacements for various values of anisotropy and string lengths are derived from scattering theory and Bethe ansatz phase shifts, matching time evolution fits on the displacements. The time evolved block decimation (TEBD) algorithm allows for the study of scattering displacements from spin-block states, showing similar scattering displacement features.

Analytical expression for a post-quench time evolution of the one-body density matrix of one-dimensional hard-core bosons

We apply the logic of the quench action to give an exact analytical expression for the time evolution of the one-body density matrix after an interaction quench in the Lieb-Liniger model from the ground state of the free theory (BEC state) to the infinitely repulsive regime. In this limit there exists a mapping between the bosonic wavefuntions and the free fermionic ones but this does not help the computation of the one-body density matrix which is sensitive to particle statistics. The final expression, given in terms of the difference of the square root of two Fredholm determinants, can be numerically evaluated and is valid in the thermodynamic limit and for all times after the quench.

Probing the Excitations of a Lieb-Liniger Gas from Weak to Strong Coupling

We probe the excitation spectrum of an ultracold one-dimensional Bose gas of Cesium atoms with repulsive contact interaction that we tune from the weakly to the strongly interacting regime via a magnetic Feshbach resonance. The dynamical structure factor, experimentally obtained using Bragg spectroscopy, is compared to integrability-based calculations valid at arbitrary interactions and finite temperatures. Our results unequivocally underly the fact that hole-like excitations, which have no counterpart in higher dimensions, actively shape the dynamical response of the gas.

Relaxation dynamics of local observables in integrable systems

We show, using the quench action approach [Caux&Essler Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013)], that the whole post-quench time evolution of an integrable system in the thermodynamic limit can be computed with a minimal set of data which are encoded in what we denote the generalized single-particle overlap coefficient $s_0^{Ψ_0}(λ)$. This function can be extracted from the thermodynamically leading part of the overlaps between the eigenstates of the model and the initial state. For a generic global quench the shape of $s_0^{Ψ_0}(λ)$ in the low momentum limit directly gives the exponent for the power law decay to the effective steady state. As an example we compute the time evolution of the static density-density correlation in the interacting Lieb-Liniger gas after a quench from a Bose-Einstein condensate. This shows an approach to equilibrium with power law $t^{-3}$ which turns out to be independent of the post-quench interaction and of the considered observable.

Dynamical structure factor of one-dimensional Bose gases: experimental signatures of beyond-Luttinger liquid physics

Interactions are known to have dramatic effects on bosonic gases in one dimension (1D). Not only does the ground state transform from a condensate-like state to an effective Fermi sea, but new fundamental excitations, which do not have any higher-dimensional equivalents, are predicted to appear. In this work, we trace these elusive excitations via their effects on the dynamical structure factor of 1D strongly-interacting Bose gases at low temperature. An array of 1D Bose gases is obtained by loading a $^{87}$Rb condensate in a 2D lattice potential. The dynamical structure factor of the system is probed by energy deposition through low-momentum Bragg excitations. The experimental signals are compared to recent theoretical predictions for the dynamical structure factor of the Lieb-Liniger model at $T > 0$. Our results demonstrate that the main contribution to the spectral widths stems from the dynamics of the interaction-induced excitations in the gas, which cannot be described by the Luttinger liquid theory.

Quench action approach for releasing the Néel state into the spin-1/2 XXZ chain

The steady state after a quantum quench from the Néel state to the anisotropic Heisenberg model for spin chains is investigated. Two methods that aim to describe the postquench non-thermal equilibrium, the generalized Gibbs ensemble and the quench action approach, are discussed and contrasted. Using the recent implementation of the quench action approach for this Néel-to-XXZ quench, we obtain an exact description of the steady state in terms of Bethe root densities, for which we give explicit analytical expressions. Furthermore, by developing a systematic small-quench expansion around the antiferromagnetic Ising limit, we analytically investigate the differences between the predictions of the two methods in terms of densities and postquench equilibrium expectation values of local physical observables. Finally, we discuss the details of the quench action solution for the quench to the isotropic Heisenberg spin chain. For this case we validate the underlying assumptions of the quench action approach by studying the large-system-size behavior of the overlaps between Bethe states and the Néel state.

Competing interactions in semiconductor quantum dots

We introduce an integrability-based method enabling the study of semiconductor quantum dot models incorporating both the full hyperfine interaction as well as a mean-field treatment of dipole-dipole interactions in the nuclear spin bath. By performing free induction decay and spin echo simulations we characterize the combined effect of both types of interactions on the decoherence of the electron spin, for external fields ranging from low to high values. We show that for spin echo simulations the hyperfine interaction is the dominant source of decoherence at short times for low fields, and competes with the dipole-dipole interactions at longer times. On the contrary, at high fields the main source of decay is due to the dipole-dipole interactions. In the latter regime an asymmetry in the echo is observed. Furthermore, the non-decaying fraction previously observed for zero field free induction decay simulations in quantum dots with only hyperfine interactions, is destroyed for longer times by the mean-field treatment of the dipolar interactions.

Quenching the Anisotropic Heisenberg Chain: Exact Solution and Generalized Gibbs Ensemble Predictions

We study quenches in integrable spin-1/2 chains in which we evolve the ground state of the antiferromagnetic Ising model with the anisotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian. For this nontrivially interacting situation, an application of the first-principles-based quench action method allows us to give an exact description of the postquench steady state in the thermodynamic limit. We show that a generalized Gibbs ensemble, implemented using all known local conserved charges, fails to reproduce the exact quench action steady state and to correctly predict postquench equilibrium expectation values of physical observables. This is supported by numerical linked-cluster calculations within the diagonal ensemble in the thermodynamic limit.

Néel-XXZ state overlaps: odd particle numbers and Lieb-Liniger scaling limit

We specialize a recently-proposed determinant formula for the overlap of the zero-momentum Néel state with Bethe states of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain to the case of an odd number of downturned spins, showing that it is still of "Gaudin-like" form, similar to the case of an even number of down spins. We generalize this result to the overlap of $q$-raised Néel states with parity-invariant Bethe states lying in a nonzero magnetization sector. The generalized determinant expression can then be used to derive the corresponding determinants and their prefactors in the scaling limit to the Lieb-Liniger (LL) Bose gas. The odd number of down spins directly translates to an odd number of bosons. We furthermore give a proof that the Néel state has no overlap with non-parity-invariant Bethe states. This is based on a determinant expression for overlaps with general Bethe states that was obtained in the context of the XXZ chain with open boundary conditions. The statement that overlaps with non-parity-invariant Bethe states vanish is still valid in the scaling limit to LL which means that the BEC state has zero overlap with non-parity-invariant LL Bethe states.

Exact out-of-equilibrium central spin dynamics from integrability

We consider a Gaudin magnet (central spin model) with a time-dependent exchange couplings. We explicitly show that the Schrödinger equation is analytically solvable in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions for particular choices of the time dependence of the coupling constants. Our method establishes a new link between this system and the SU(2) Wess-Zumino-Witten model, and sheds new light on the implications of integrability in out-of-equilibrium quantum physics. As an application, a driven four-spin system is studied in detail.
