Enhanced Light Emission from Erbium Doped Silicon Nitride in Plasmonic Metal-Insulator-Metal Structures

Plasmonic gratings and nano-particle arrays in a metal-insulator-metal structures are fabricated on an erbium doped silicon nitride layer. This material system enables simple fabrication of the structure, since the active nitride layer can be directly grown on metal. Enhancement of collected emission of up to 12 is observed on resonance, while broad off-resonant enhancement is also present. The output polarization behavior of the gratings and nano-particle arrays is investigated and matched to plasmonic resonances, and the behavior of coupled modes as a function of inter-particle distance is also discussed.

Deterministic generation of non-classical states of light using photon blockade

The generation of non-classical states of light via photon blockade with time-modulated input is analyzed. We show that improved single photon statistics can be obtained by adequately choosing the parameters of the driving laser pulses. An alternative method, where the system is driven via a continuous wave laser and the frequency of the dipole is controlled (e.g. electrically) at very fast timescales is presented.

Fast, High Fidelity Quantum Dot Spin Initialization without a Strong Magnetic Field by Two-Photon Processes

We describe a proposal for fast electron spin initialization in a negatively charged quantum dot coupled to a microcavity without the need for a strong magnetic field. We employ two-photon excitation to access trion states that are spin forbidden by one-photon excitation. Our simulation shows a maximum initialization speed of 1.3 GHz and maximum fidelity of 99.7% with realistic system parameters.

Enhanced Two-Photon Processes in Quantum Dots inside Photonic Crystal Nanocavities and Quantum Information Processing Applications

We show that the two-photon transition rates of quantum dots coupled to nanocavities are enhanced by up to 8 orders of magnitude relative to quantum dots in bulk host. We then propose how to take advantage of this enhancement to implement coherent quantum dot excitation by two-photon absorption, entangled photon pair generation by two-photon spontaneous emission, and single-photon generation at telecommunication wavelengths by two-photon stimulated and spontaneous emission.

Fast Electrical Control of a Quantum Dot Strongly Coupled to a Nano-resonator

The resonance frequency of an InAs quantum dot strongly coupled to a GaAs photonic crystal cavity was electrically controlled via quantum confined Stark effect. Stark shifts up to 0.3meV were achieved using a lateral Schottky electrode that created a local depletion region at the location of the quantum dot. We report switching of a probe laser coherently coupled to the cavity up to speeds as high as 150MHz, limited by the RC constant of the transmission line. The coupling rate and the magnitude of the Stark shift with electric field were investigated while coherently probing the system.

Electrically controlled modulation in a photonic crystal nanocavity

We describe a compact modulator based on a planar photonic crystal nanocavity whose resonance is electrically controlled. A forward bias applied across a p-i-n diode shifts the cavity into and out of resonance with a continuous-wave laser field in a waveguide. The sub-micron size of the nanocavity promises extremely low capacitance, high bandwidth, and efficient on-chip integration in optical interconnects.

Local temperature control of photonic crystal devices via micron-scale electrical heaters

We demonstrate a method to locally control the temperature of photonic crystal devices via micron-scale electrical heaters. The method is used to control the resonant frequency of InAs quantum dots strongly coupled to GaAs photonic crystal resonators. This technique enables independent control of large ensembles of photonic devices located on the same chip at tuning speed as high as hundreds of kHz.

High-brightness single photon source from a quantum dot in a directional-emission nanocavity

We analyze a single photon source consisting of an InAs quantum dot coupled to a directional-emission photonic crystal (PC) cavity implemented in GaAs. On resonance, the dot's lifetime is reduced by more than 10 times, to 45ps. Compared to the standard three-hole defect cavity, the perturbed PC cavity design improves the collection efficiency into an objective lens (NA=0.75) by factor 6, and improves the coupling efficiency of the collected light into a single mode fiber by factor 1.9. The emission frequency is determined by the cavity mode, which is antibunched to g(2)=0.05. The cavity design also enables efficient coupling to a higher-order cavity mode for local optical excitation of cavity-coupled quantum dots.

Coherent excitation of a strongly coupled quantum dot - cavity system

We have studied the coherent excitation of a strongly coupled QD/photonic crystal cavity system. Time-resolved reflectivity measurements show the vacuum Rabi oscillation of the dot in the cavity. Next, we considered the resonant driving of a cavity-detuned dot, which efficiently populates the cavity mode. This cavity-controlled read-out channel allows high-resolution single quantum dot spectroscopy. Autocorrelation measurements on the cavity mode show antibunching and suggest the use of the resonantly driven QD/cavity system as an on-demand source of single photons with potentially near-unity indistinguishability.

Time-resolved lasing action from single and coupled photonic crystal nanocavity array lasers emitting in the telecom-band

We measure the lasing dynamics of single and coupled photonic crystal nanocavity array lasers fabricated in the indium gallium arsenide phosphide material system. Under short optical excitation, single cavity lasers produce pulses as fast as 11 ps (FWHM), while coupled cavity lasers show significantly longer lasing duration which is not explained by a simple rate equations model. A Finite Difference Time Domain simulation including carrier gain and diffusion suggests that asynchronous lasing across the nanocavity array extends the laser's pulse duration.

Plasmonic Enhancement of Emission from Si-nanocrystals

Plasmonic gratings of different periodicities are fabricated on top of Silicon nanocrystals embedded in Silicon Dioxide. Purcell enhancements of up to 2 were observed, which matches the value from simulations. Plasmonic enhancements are observed for the first three orders of the plasmonic modes, with the peak enhancement wavelength varying with the periodicity. Biharmonic gratings are also fabricated to extract the enhanced emission from the first order plasmonic mode, resulting in enhancements with quality factors of up to 16.

Gallium Phosphide Photonic Crystal Nanocavities in the Visible

Photonic crystal nanocavities at visible wavelengths are fabricated in a high refractive index (n>3.2) gallium phosphide membrane. The cavities are probed via a cross-polarized reflectivity measurement and show resonances at wavelengths as low as 645 nm at room temperature, with quality factors between 500 and 1700 for modes with volumes 0.7(lambda/n)^3. These structures could be employed for submicron scale optoelectronic devices in the visible, and for coupling to novel emitters with resonances in the visible such as nitrogen vacancy centers, and bio- and organic molecules.

Coherent generation of nonclassical light on a chip via photon-induced tunneling and blockade

We report the observation of nonclassical light generated via photon blockade in a photonic crystal cavity with a strongly coupled quantum dot. By tuning the frequency of the probe laser with respect to the cavity and quantum dot resonance we can probe the system in either photon blockade or photon-induced tunneling regime. The transition from one regime to the other is confirmed by the measurement of the second order correlation that changes from anti-bunching to bunching.

Spontaneous emission control in high-extraction efficiency plasmonic crystals

We experimentally and theoretically investigate exciton-field coupling for the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) in waveguide-confined (WC) anti-symmetric modes of hexagonal plasmonic crystals in InP-TiO-Au-TiO-Si heterostructures. The radiative decay time of the InP-based transverse magnetic (TM)-strained multi-quantum well (MQW) coupled to the SPP modes is observed to be 2.9-3.7 times shorter than that of a bare MQW wafer. Theoretically we find that 80 % of the enhanced PL is emitted into SPP modes, and 17 % of the enhanced luminescence is redirected into WC-anti-symmetric modes. In addition to the direct coupling of the excitons to the plasmonic modes, this demonstration is also useful for the development of high-temperature SPP lasers, the development of highly integrated photo-electrical devices, or miniaturized biosensors.

Local tuning of photonic crystal cavities using chalcogenide glasses

We demonstrate a method to locally change the refractive index in planar optical devices by photodarkening of a thin chalcogenide glass layer deposited on top of the device. The method is used to tune the resonance of GaAs-based photonic crystal cavities by up to 3 nm at 940 nm, with only 5% deterioration in cavity quality factor. The method has broad applications for postproduction tuning of photonic devices.

Low-Threshold Surface-Passivated Photonic Crystal Nanocavity Laser

The efficiency and operating range of a photonic crystal laser is improved by passivating the InGaAs quantum well (QW) gain medium and GaAs membrane using an (NH4)S treatment. The passivated laser shows a four-fold reduction in nonradiative surface recombination rate, resulting in a four-fold reduction in lasing threshold. A three-level carrier dynamics model explains the results and shows that lasing threshold is as much determined by surface recombination losses as by the cavity quality factor (Q). Surface passivation therefore appears crucial in operating such lasers under practical conditions.

Genetic Optimization of Photonic Bandgap Structures

We investigate the use of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to design a set of photonic crystals (PCs) in one and two dimensions. Our flexible design methodology allows us to optimize PC structures which are optimized for specific objectives. In this paper, we report the results of several such GA-based PC optimizations. We show that the GA performs well even in very complex design spaces, and therefore has great potential for use as a robust design tool in present and future applications.
