Understanding eccentric temperate giants: an in-depth study of the architecture and stellar obliquity of the TOI-2134 system

We revisit the TOI-2134 planetary system with three new high-cadence TESS sectors and 98 more spectra. This new analysis confirms the two orbiting planets by simultaneously modelling a total of eight sectors of corrected TESS photometry and 280 HARPS-N and SOPHIE radial velocities: an inner mini-Neptune in a near-circular $9.229198\pm0.000003$ days orbit, and an outer temperate sub-Saturn orbiting with a $95.852840\pm0.000042$ days period and eccentricity of $0.31\pm0.01$. The masses and radii of the planets were computed to be $9.37\pm0.54$ Me and $2.735\pm0.068$ Re for planet b, and $58.3\pm1.9$ Me and $7.35\pm0.18$ Re for planet c. The new data not only improves the detection significance and precisions on the planetary orbits, but also breaks the original multimodality in the eccentricity solution for the outer planet. We also detect a long-term trend in the radial velocity data, which we attribute to a stellar magnetic cycle. We investigate the spin-orbit alignment of the system via observations of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect for TOI-2134~b with EXPRES and TOI-2134~c with PARAS-2. No RM effect was detected for planet b, but we find a 4.7$σ$ detection of a $59\pm31^{\circ}$ obliquity for planet c. Finally, we examine the architecture of the system, assess its completeness, investigate the planetary interior, and their suitability for follow-up atmospheric analysis.

PAStar: a model for stellar surface from the Sun to active stars

Context. The characterization of exoplanets requires a good description of the host star. Stellar activity acts as a source of noise which can alter planet radii as derived from the transit depth or atmospheric characterization. Aims. Here, we propose PAStar, a model to describe photospheric activity in the form of spots and faculae which could be applied to a wide range of stellar observations, from photometric to spectroscopic time series, to be able to correctly extract planetary and stellar properties. Methods. The adopted stellar atmosphere is a combination of three components, the quiet photosphere, spots and faculae. The model takes into account the effects of star inclination, doppler shifts due to stellar rotation as well as for limb darkening, independent for each component. Several synthetic products have been presented to show the capabilities of the model. Results. The model is able to retrieve the input surface inhomogeneities configuration through photometric or spectroscopic observations. The model has been validated against optical solar data and compared to alternative stellar surface activity models; e.g. SOAP code. The Sun is a unique laboratory to test stellar models because of the possibility to relate unambiguously flux variations to surface inhomogeneities configuration. This validation has been done by analyzing a photometric time series from the VIRGO photometer on board of SOHO mission. Results have been compared to real solar images from the HMI instrument on board of SDO to confirm the goodness of the results in terms of surface inhomogeneities position and dimensions. Conclusions. The description of stellar activity is a fundamental step in several astrophysical contexts and it is covered by the method we have presented. Our model offers a flexible and valuable tool to describe the activity of stars when it is dominated by spots and faculae.

A reanalysis of the LHS 1140 b atmosphere observed with the Hubble Space Telescope

The super-Earth LHS 1140 b is an interesting target for atmospheric observations since it is close to the habitable zone of its star and falls in the gap of the radius distribution of small exoplanets, in the region thought to correspond to the transition between planets with and without atmospheres. Observations of the primary transit with WFC3 on board of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) revealed a modulation in the planet transmission spectrum compatible with the presence of water; however this modulation may be also due to stellar activity-related phenomena. Here we present a detailed analysis of the WFC3/HST observations to probe the nature of this modulation and to understand if it can be attributable to the presence of unocculted spots on the stellar surface. Our analysis strongly suggests that LHS1140 is a rather quiet star with subsolar [Fe/H] and enriched in alpha elements. Therefore, we rule out the possibility that the planetary spectrum is affected by the presence of spots and faculae. This analysis shows the importance of a proper modelling of the stellar spectrum when analyzing transit observations. Finally, we modelled the planetary atmosphere of LHS1140 b to retrieve its atmospheric composition. However, the low resolution and the narrow spectral range of HST observations prevented us from definitively determining whether the spectral features are attributable to the presence of water or of other molecules in the planetary atmosphere.

TOI-4010: A System of Three Large Short-Period Planets With a Massive Long-Period Companion

We report the confirmation of three exoplanets transiting TOI-4010 (TIC-352682207), a metal-rich K dwarf observed by TESS in Sectors 24, 25, 52, and 58. We confirm these planets with HARPS-N radial velocity observations and measure their masses with 8 - 12% precision. TOI-4010 b is a sub-Neptune ($P = 1.3$ days, $R_{p} = 3.02_{-0.08}^{+0.08}~R_{\oplus}$, $M_{p} = 11.00_{-1.27}^{+1.29}~M_{\oplus}$) in the hot Neptune desert, and is one of the few such planets with known companions. Meanwhile, TOI-4010 c ($P = 5.4$ days, $R_{p} = 5.93_{-0.12}^{+0.11}~R_{\oplus}$, $M_{p} = 20.31_{-2.11}^{+2.13}~M_{\oplus}$) and TOI-4010 d ($P = 14.7$ days, $R_{p} = 6.18_{-0.14}^{+0.15}~R_{\oplus}$, $M_{p} = 38.15_{-3.22}^{+3.27}~M_{\oplus}$) are similarly-sized sub-Saturns on short-period orbits. Radial velocity observations also reveal a super-Jupiter-mass companion called TOI-4010 e in a long-period, eccentric orbit ($P \sim 762$ days and $e \sim 0.26$ based on available observations). TOI-4010 is one of the few systems with multiple short-period sub-Saturns to be discovered so far.

High precision astrometry mission for the detection and characterization of nearby habitable planetary systems with the Nearby Earth Astrometric Telescope (NEAT)

(abridged) A complete census of planetary systems around a volume-limited sample of solar-type stars (FGK dwarfs) in the Solar neighborhood with uniform sensitivity down to Earth-mass planets within their Habitable Zones out to several AUs would be a major milestone in extrasolar planets astrophysics. This fundamental goal can be achieved with a mission concept such as NEAT - the Nearby Earth Astrometric Telescope. NEAT is designed to carry out space-borne extremely-high-precision astrometric measurements sufficient to detect dynamical effects due to orbiting planets of mass even lower than Earth's around the nearest stars. Such a survey mission would provide the actual planetary masses and the full orbital geometry for all the components of the detected planetary systems down to the Earth-mass limit. The NEAT performance limits can be achieved by carrying out differential astrometry between the targets and a set of suitable reference stars in the field. The NEAT instrument design consists of an off-axis parabola single-mirror telescope, a detector with a large field of view made of small movable CCDs located around a fixed central CCD, and an interferometric calibration system originating from metrology fibers located at the primary mirror. The proposed mission architecture relies on the use of two satellites operating at L2 for 5 years, flying in formation and offering a capability of more than 20,000 reconfigurations (alternative option uses deployable boom). The NEAT primary science program will encompass an astrometric survey of our 200 closest F-, G- and K-type stellar neighbors, with an average of 50 visits. The remaining time might be allocated to improve the characterization of the architecture of selected planetary systems around nearby targets of specific interest (low-mass stars, young stars, etc.) discovered by Gaia, ground-based high-precision radial-velocity surveys.
