Commutators of multi-parameter flag singular integrals and applications

We introduce the iterated commutator for the Riesz transforms in the multi-parameter flag setting, and prove the upper bound of this commutator with respect to the symbol $b$ in the flag BMO space. Our methods require the techniques of semigroups, harmonic functions and multi-parameter flag Littlewood-Paley analysis. We also introduce the big commutator in this multi-parameter flag setting and prove the upper bound with symbol $b$ in the flag little-bmo space by establishing the "exponential-logarithmic" bridge between this flag little bmo space and the Muckenhoupt $A_p$ weights with flag structure. As an application, we establish the div-curl lemmas with respect to the appropriate Hardy spaces in the multi-parameter flag setting.

LEMONY--a Library of Empirical Medium-resolution spectra by Observations with the NAOC Xinglong 2.16\,m and YNAO Gaomeigu 2.4\,m telescopes

This study expands the coverage and improves the homogeneity of the distribution of MILES template stars in the parameter space, as well as extends the wavelength coverage of the template spectra to the far red beyond the Ca\,{\sc{ii}} triplet. To achieve this we have carried out a major observational campaign using the OMR long-slit spectrograph mounted on the NAOC 2.16\,m telescope and the YFOSC long-slit spectrograph mounted on the YNAO 2.4\,m telescope. The original sample is based on the MILES library, supplemented by 918 stars selected from PASTEL database. In total, 822 OMR and 1,324 YFOSC spectra, covering respectively the wavelength ranges $λλ$3800--5180 and $λλ$5150--9000, have been collected and reduced. The spectra have a mean resolution FWHM (full-width at half-maximum) of $\sim 3.3$\,Å and are wavelength- and flux-calibrated to an accuracy of $\sim 20$\,km\,s$^{-1}$ and $\sim 5$\,per\,cent, respectively. The spectra are further corrected for systematic errors in the wavelength calibration to an accuracy of $\sim 4$\,km\,s$^{-1}$ by cross-correlating with the theoretical spectra. Almost all the spectra have an average signal to noise ratio (SNR) better than 100 per pixel. Combined with the MILES spectra, there are now 1,731, 1,542, 1,324 and 1,273 stars with spectra covering respectively $λλ$3800--5180, $λλ$3800--7500, $λλ$5150--9000 and $λλ$3800--9000. This paper describes our template star selection, the observation and data reduction, and presents the reduced spectra collected hitherto.

Differential Diagnosis for Pancreatic Cysts in CT Scans Using Densely-Connected Convolutional Networks

The lethal nature of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) calls for early differential diagnosis of pancreatic cysts, which are identified in up to 16% of normal subjects, and some of which may develop into PDAC. Previous computer-aided developments have achieved certain accuracy for classification on segmented cystic lesions in CT. However, pancreatic cysts have a large variation in size and shape, and the precise segmentation of them remains rather challenging, which restricts the computer-aided interpretation of CT images acquired for differential diagnosis. We propose a computer-aided framework for early differential diagnosis of pancreatic cysts without pre-segmenting the lesions using densely-connected convolutional networks (Dense-Net). The Dense-Net learns high-level features from whole abnormal pancreas and builds mappings between medical imaging appearance to different pathological types of pancreatic cysts. To enhance the clinical applicability, we integrate saliency maps in the framework to assist the physicians to understand the decision of the deep learning method. The test on a cohort of 206 patients with 4 pathologically confirmed subtypes of pancreatic cysts has achieved an overall accuracy of 72.8%, which is significantly higher than the baseline accuracy of 48.1%, which strongly supports the clinical potential of our developed method.

Compactness of Riesz transform commutator on stratified Lie groups

Let $\mathcal G$ be a stratified Lie group and $\{\X_j\}_{1 \leq j \leq n}$ a basis for the left-invariant vector fields of degree one on $\mathcal G$. Let $Δ= \sum_{j = 1}^n \X_j^2 $ be the sub-Laplacian on $\mathcal G$. The $j^{\mathrm{th}}$ Riesz transform on $\mathcal G$ is defined by $R_j:= \X_j (-Δ)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$, $1 \leq j \leq n$. In this paper, we provide a concrete construction of the "twisted truncated sector" which is related to the pointwise lower bound of the kernel of $R_j$ on $\mathcal G$. Then we obtain the characterisation of compactness of the commutators of $R_j$ with a function $b\in$ VMO$(\mathcal G)$, the space of functions with vanishing mean oscillation on $\mathcal G$.

Towards Budget-Driven Hardware Optimization for Deep Convolutional Neural Networks using Stochastic Computing

Recently, Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) has achieved tremendous success in many machine learning applications. Nevertheless, the deep structure has brought significant increases in computation complexity. Largescale deep learning systems mainly operate in high-performance server clusters, thus restricting the application extensions to personal or mobile devices. Previous works on GPU and/or FPGA acceleration for DCNNs show increasing speedup, but ignore other constraints, such as area, power, and energy. Stochastic Computing (SC), as a unique data representation and processing technique, has the potential to enable the design of fully parallel and scalable hardware implementations of large-scale deep learning systems. This paper proposed an automatic design allocation algorithm driven by budget requirement considering overall accuracy performance. This systematic method enables the automatic design of a DCNN where all design parameters are jointly optimized. Experimental results demonstrate that proposed algorithm can achieve a joint optimization of all design parameters given the comprehensive budget of a DCNN.

On the boundary Strichartz estimates for wave and Schrödinger equations

We consider the $L_t^2L_x^r$ estimates for the solutions to the wave and Schrödinger equations in high dimensions. For the homogeneous estimates, we show $L_t^2L_x^\infty$ estimates fail at the critical regularity in high dimensions by using stable Lévy process in $\R^d$. Moreover, we show that some spherically averaged $L_t^2L_x^\infty$ estimate holds at the critical regularity. As a by-product we obtain Strichartz estimates with angular smoothing effect. For the inhomogeneous estimates, we prove double $L_t^2$-type estimates.

A Complete Real-Variable Theory of Hardy Spaces on Spaces of Homogeneous Type

Let $(X,d,μ)$ be a space of homogeneous type, with the upper dimension $ω$, in the sense of R. R. Coifman and G. Weiss. Assume that $η$ is the smoothness index of the wavelets on $X$ constructed by P. Auscher and T. Hytönen. In this article, when $p\in(ω/(ω+η),1]$, for the atomic Hardy spaces $H_{\mathrm{cw}}^p(X)$ introduced by Coifman and Weiss, the authors establish their various real-variable characterizations, respectively, in terms of the grand maximal function, the radial maximal function, the non-tangential maximal functions, the various Littlewood-Paley functions and wavelet functions. This completely answers the question of R. R. Coifman and G. Weiss by showing that no any additional (geometrical) condition is necessary to guarantee the radial maximal function characterization of $H_{\mathrm{cw}}^1(X)$ and even of $H_{\mathrm{cw}}^p(X)$ with $p$ as above. As applications, the authors obtain the finite atomic characterizations of $H^p_{\mathrm{cw}}(X)$, which further induce some criteria for the boundedness of sublinear operators on $H^p_{\mathrm{cw}}(X)$. Compared with the known results, the novelty of this article is that $μ$ is not assumed to satisfy the reverse doubling condition and $d$ is only a quasi-metric, moreover, the range $p\in(ω/(ω+η),1]$ is natural and optimal.

Prediction-Based Fast Thermoelectric Generator Reconfiguration for Energy Harvesting from Vehicle Radiators

Thermoelectric generation (TEG) has increasingly drawn attention for being environmentally friendly. A few researches have focused on improving TEG efficiency at the system level on vehicle radiators. The most recent reconfiguration algorithm shows improvement in performance but suffers from major drawback on computational time and energy overhead, and non-scalability in terms of array size and processing frequency. In this paper, we propose a novel TEG array reconfiguration algorithm that determines near-optimal configuration with an acceptable computational time. More precisely, with $O(N)$ time complexity, our prediction-based fast TEG reconfiguration algorithm enables all modules to work at or near their maximum power points (MPP). Additionally, we incorporate prediction methods to further reduce the runtime and switching overhead during the reconfiguration process. Experimental results present $30\%$ performance improvement, almost $100\times$ reduction on switching overhead and $13\times$ enhancement on computational speed compared to the baseline and prior work. The scalability of our algorithm makes it applicable to larger scale systems such as industrial boilers and heat exchangers.

Lower bound of Riesz transform kernels revisited and commutators on stratified Lie groups

Let $\mathcal G$ be a stratified Lie group and $\{\X_j\}_{1 \leq j \leq n}$ a basis for the left-invariant vector fields of degree one on $\mathcal G$. Let $Δ= \sum_{j = 1}^n \X_j^2 $ be the sub-Laplacian on $\mathcal G$ and the $j^{\mathrm{th}}$ Riesz transform on $\mathcal G$ is defined by $R_j:= \X_j (-Δ)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$, $1 \leq j \leq n$. In this paper we give a new version of the lower bound of the kernels of Riesz transform $R_j$ and then establish the Bloom-type two weight estimates as well as a number of endpoint characterisations for the commutators of the Riesz transforms and BMO functions, including the $L\log^+L(\mathcal G)$ to weak $L^1(\mathcal G)$, $H^1(\mathcal G)$ to $L^1(\mathcal G)$ and $L^\infty(\mathcal G)$ to BMO$(\mathcal G)$. Moreover, we also study the behaviour of the Riesz transform kernel on a special case of stratified Lie group: the Heisenberg group, and then we obtain the weak type $(1,1)$ characterisations for the Riesz commutators.

Lower bound of Riesz transform kernels and Commutator Theorems on stratified nilpotent Lie groups

We provide a study of the Riesz transforms on stratified nilpotent Lie groups, and obtain a certain version of the pointwise lower bound of the Riesz transform kernel. Then we establish the characterisation of the BMO space on stratified nilpotent Lie groups via the boundedness of the commutator of the Riesz transforms and the BMO function. This extends the well-known Coifman, Rochberg, Weiss theorem from Euclidean space to the setting of stratified nilpotent Lie groups. In particular, these results apply to the well-known example of the Heisenberg group. As an application, we also study the curl operator on the Heisenberg group and stratified nilpotent Lie groups, and establish the div-curl lemma with respect to the Hardy space on stratified nilpotent Lie groups.

A third order gas-kinetic scheme for unstructured grid

In our study, a compact third order gas-kinetic scheme is constructed for unstructured grid which is combined the compact least-square reconstruction (CLS) method. The CLS method can achieve arbitrary high order compact reconstruction using the stencil from the whole computational domain implicitly. A large sparse linear system resulted from the CLS reconstruction method is solved by applying the generalized minimal residual algorithm (GMRES), and the Reverse-Cuthill-McKee (RCM) algorithm and the incomplete lower-upper (ILU) factorization method are implemented to accelerate the convergence of the iterative method. Different from the traditional flux solver, the BGK based gas-kinetic scheme is in the nature of spatial and temporal accuracy. Applying the second order expansion to the distribution function, the third order flux solver can be obtained directly. The accuracy of present method is validated by several numerical cases such as the advection of density perturbation problem, Sod shock wave problem, Lax shock tube test case, Shu-Osher problem, shock-vortex interaction, and lid-driven cavity flow. The advantages of this high order gas-kinetic scheme are exhibited in some benchmarks including incompressible flow and supersonic compressible flow, inviscid flow and viscous flow.

Phase separation and hidden vortices induced by spin-orbit coupling in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate phase separation and hidden vortices in spin-orbit coupled ferromagnetic BoseEinstein condensates with rotation and Rabi coupling. The hidden vortices are invisible in density distribution but are visible in phase distribution, which can carry angular momentum like the ordinary quantized vortices. In the absence of the rotation, we observe the phase separation induced by the spin-orbit coupling and determine the entire phase diagram of the existence of phase separation. For the rotation case, in addition to the phase separation, we demonstrate particularly that the spin-orbit coupling can result in the hidden vortices and hidden vortex-antivortex pairs. The corresponding entire phase diagrams are determined, depending on the interplay of the spin-orbit coupling strength, the rotation frequency, and Rabi frequency, which reveals the critical condition of the occurrence of the hidden vortices and vortex-antivortex pairs. The hidden vortices here are proved to be long-lived in the time scale of experiment by the dynamic analysis. These findings not only provide a clear illustration of the phase separation in spin-orbit coupled spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, but also open a new direction for investigating the hidden vortices in high-spin quantum system.

Indirect Supervision for Relation Extraction using Question-Answer Pairs

Automatic relation extraction (RE) for types of interest is of great importance for interpreting massive text corpora in an efficient manner. Traditional RE models have heavily relied on human-annotated corpus for training, which can be costly in generating labeled data and become obstacles when dealing with more relation types. Thus, more RE extraction systems have shifted to be built upon training data automatically acquired by linking to knowledge bases (distant supervision). However, due to the incompleteness of knowledge bases and the context-agnostic labeling, the training data collected via distant supervision (DS) can be very noisy. In recent years, as increasing attention has been brought to tackling question-answering (QA) tasks, user feedback or datasets of such tasks become more accessible. In this paper, we propose a novel framework, ReQuest, to leverage question-answer pairs as an indirect source of supervision for relation extraction, and study how to use such supervision to reduce noise induced from DS. Our model jointly embeds relation mentions, types, QA entity mention pairs and text features in two low-dimensional spaces (RE and QA), where objects with same relation types or semantically similar question-answer pairs have similar representations. Shared features connect these two spaces, carrying clearer semantic knowledge from both sources. ReQuest, then use these learned embeddings to estimate the types of test relation mentions. We formulate a global objective function and adopt a novel margin-based QA loss to reduce noise in DS by exploiting semantic evidence from the QA dataset. Our experimental results achieve an average of 11% improvement in F1 score on two public RE datasets combined with TREC QA dataset.

Product BMO, little BMO and Riesz Commutators in the Bessel setting

In this paper, we study the product BMO space, little bmo space and their connections with the corresponding commutators associated with Bessel operators studied by Weinstein, Huber, and by Muckenhoupt-Stein. We first prove that the product BMO space in the Bessel setting can be used to prove the boundedness of the iterated commutators with the Bessel Riesz transforms. We next study the little $\rm bmo$ space in this Bessel setting and obtain the equivalent characterization of this space in terms of commutators. We further show that in analogy with the classical setting, the little $\rm bmo$ space is a proper subspace of the product $\rm BMO$ space. These extend the previous related results studied by Cotlar-Sadosky and Ferguson-Sadosky on the bidisc to the Bessel setting.

A class of singular integrals associated with Zygmund dilations

The main purpose of this paper is to study multi-parameter singular integral operators which commute with Zygmund dilations. We introduce a class of singular integral operators associated with Zygmund dilations and show the boundedness for these operators on $L^p, 1<p<\infty$, which covers those studied by Ricci--Stein \cite{RS} and Nagel--Wainger \cite{NW}

Two weight commutators for Beurling--Ahlfors operator

We establish the equivalent characterisation of the weighted BMO space on the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$ via the two weight commutator of the Beurling--Ahlfors operator with a BMO function. Our method of proofs relies on the explicit kernel of the Beurling--Ahlfors operator and the properties of Muckenhoupt weight class.

Ground-to-satellite quantum teleportation

An arbitrary unknown quantum state cannot be precisely measured or perfectly replicated. However, quantum teleportation allows faithful transfer of unknown quantum states from one object to another over long distance, without physical travelling of the object itself. Long-distance teleportation has been recognized as a fundamental element in protocols such as large-scale quantum networks and distributed quantum computation. However, the previous teleportation experiments between distant locations were limited to a distance on the order of 100 kilometers, due to photon loss in optical fibres or terrestrial free-space channels. An outstanding open challenge for a global-scale "quantum internet" is to significantly extend the range for teleportation. A promising solution to this problem is exploiting satellite platform and space-based link, which can conveniently connect two remote points on the Earth with greatly reduced channel loss because most of the photons' propagation path is in empty space. Here, we report the first quantum teleportation of independent single-photon qubits from a ground observatory to a low Earth orbit satellite - through an up-link channel - with a distance up to 1400 km. To optimize the link efficiency and overcome the atmospheric turbulence in the up-link, a series of techniques are developed, including a compact ultra-bright source of multi-photon entanglement, narrow beam divergence, high-bandwidth and high-accuracy acquiring, pointing, and tracking (APT). We demonstrate successful quantum teleportation for six input states in mutually unbiased bases with an average fidelity of 0.80+/-0.01, well above the classical limit. This work establishes the first ground-to-satellite up-link for faithful and ultra-long-distance quantum teleportation, an essential step toward global-scale quantum internet.
