BagChain: A Dual-functional Blockchain Leveraging Bagging-based Distributed Learning

This work proposes a dual-functional blockchain framework named BagChain for bagging-based decentralized learning. BagChain integrates blockchain with distributed machine learning by replacing the computationally costly hash operations in proof-of-work with machine-learning model training. BagChain utilizes individual miners' private data samples and limited computing resources to train potentially weak base models, which may be very weak, and further aggregates them into strong ensemble models. Specifically, we design a three-layer blockchain structure associated with the corresponding generation and validation mechanisms to enable distributed machine learning among uncoordinated miners in a permissionless and open setting. To reduce computational waste due to blockchain forking, we further propose the cross fork sharing mechanism for practical networks with lengthy delays. Extensive experiments illustrate the superiority and efficacy of BagChain when handling various machine learning tasks on both independently and identically distributed (IID) and non-IID datasets. BagChain remains robust and effective even when facing constrained local computing capability, heterogeneous private user data, and sparse network connectivity.

Reinforcement Learning for Safe Autonomous Two Device Navigation of Cerebral Vessels in Mechanical Thrombectomy

Purpose: Autonomous systems in mechanical thrombectomy (MT) hold promise for reducing procedure times, minimizing radiation exposure, and enhancing patient safety. However, current reinforcement learning (RL) methods only reach the carotid arteries, are not generalizable to other patient vasculatures, and do not consider safety. We propose a safe dual-device RL algorithm that can navigate beyond the carotid arteries to cerebral vessels. Methods: We used the Simulation Open Framework Architecture to represent the intricacies of cerebral vessels, and a modified Soft Actor-Critic RL algorithm to learn, for the first time, the navigation of micro-catheters and micro-guidewires. We incorporate patient safety metrics into our reward function by integrating guidewire tip forces. Inverse RL is used with demonstrator data on 12 patient-specific vascular cases. Results: Our simulation demonstrates successful autonomous navigation within unseen cerebral vessels, achieving a 96% success rate, 7.0s procedure time, and 0.24 N mean forces, well below the proposed 1.5 N vessel rupture threshold. Conclusion: To the best of our knowledge, our proposed autonomous system for MT two-device navigation reaches cerebral vessels, considers safety, and is generalizable to unseen patient-specific cases for the first time. We envisage future work will extend the validation to vasculatures of different complexity and on in vitro models. While our contributions pave the way towards deploying agents in clinical settings, safety and trustworthiness will be crucial elements to consider when proposing new methodology.

Rapid mixing of the flip chain over non-crossing spanning trees

We show that the flip chain for non-crossing spanning trees of $n+1$ points in convex position mixes in time $O(n^8\log n)$. We use connections between Fuss-Catalan structures to construct a comparison argument with a chain similar to Wilson's lattice path chain (Wilson 2004).

Sink-free orientations: a local sampler with applications

For sink-free orientations in graphs of minimum degree at least $3$, we show that there is a deterministic approximate counting algorithm that runs in time $O((n^{73}/\varepsilon^{72})\log(n/\varepsilon))$, a near-linear time sampling algorithm, and a randomised approximate counting algorithm that runs in time $O((n/\varepsilon)^2\log(n/\varepsilon))$, where $n$ denotes the number of vertices of the input graph and $0<\varepsilon<1$ is the desired accuracy. All three algorithms are based on a local implementation of the sink popping method (Cohn, Pemantle, and Propp, 2002) under the partial rejection sampling framework (Guo, Jerrum, and Liu, 2019).

Acc-SpMM: Accelerating General-purpose Sparse Matrix-Matrix Multiplication with GPU Tensor Cores

General-purpose Sparse Matrix-Matrix Multiplication (SpMM) is a fundamental kernel in scientific computing and deep learning. The emergence of new matrix computation units such as Tensor Cores (TCs) brings more opportunities for SpMM acceleration. However, in order to fully unleash the power of hardware performance, systematic optimization is required. In this paper, we propose Acc-SpMM, a high-performance SpMM library on TCs, with multiple optimizations, including data-affinity-based reordering, memory efficient compressed format, high-throughput pipeline, and adaptive sparsity-aware load balancing. In contrast to the state-of-the-art SpMM kernels on various NVIDIA GPU architectures with a diverse range of benchmark matrices, Acc-SpMM achieves significant performance improvements, on average 2.52x (up to 5.11x) speedup on RTX 4090, on average 1.91x (up to 4.68x) speedup on A800, and on average 1.58x (up to 3.60x) speedup on H100 over cuSPARSE.

Approximate Counting for Spin Systems in Sub-Quadratic Time

We present two randomised approximate counting algorithms with $\widetilde{O}(n^{2-c}/\varepsilon^2)$ running time for some constant $c>0$ and accuracy $\varepsilon$: (1) for the hard-core model with fugacity $λ$ on graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ when $λ=O(Δ^{-1.5-c_1})$ where $c_1=c/(2-2c)$; (2) for spin systems with strong spatial mixing (SSM) on planar graphs with quadratic growth, such as $\mathbb{Z}^2$. For the hard-core model, Weitz's algorithm (STOC, 2006) achieves sub-quadratic running time when correlation decays faster than the neighbourhood growth, namely when $λ= o(Δ^{-2})$. Our first algorithm does not require this property and extends the range where sub-quadratic algorithms exist. Our second algorithm appears to be the first to achieve sub-quadratic running time up to the SSM threshold, albeit on a restricted family of graphs. It also extends to (not necessarily planar) graphs with polynomial growth, such as $\mathbb{Z}^d$, but with a running time of the form $\widetilde{O}\left(n^2\varepsilon^{-2}/2^{c(\log n)^{1/d}}\right)$ where $d$ is the exponent of the polynomial growth and $c>0$ is some constant.

Inapproximability of Counting Independent Sets in Linear Hypergraphs

It is shown in this note that approximating the number of independent sets in a $k$-uniform linear hypergraph with maximum degree at most $Δ$ is NP-hard if $Δ\geq 5\cdot 2^{k-1}+1$. This confirms that for the relevant sampling and approximate counting problems, the regimes on the maximum degree where the state-of-the-art algorithms work are tight, up to some small factors. These algorithms include: the approximate sampler and randomised approximation scheme by Hermon, Sly and Zhang (RSA, 2019), the perfect sampler by Qiu, Wang and Zhang (ICALP, 2022), and the deterministic approximation scheme by Feng, Guo, Wang, Wang and Yin (FOCS, 2023).

Towards derandomising Markov chain Monte Carlo

We present a new framework to derandomise certain Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithms. As in MCMC, we first reduce counting problems to sampling from a sequence of marginal distributions. For the latter task, we introduce a method called coupling towards the past that can, in logarithmic time, evaluate one or a constant number of variables from a stationary Markov chain state. Since there are at most logarithmic random choices, this leads to very simple derandomisation. We provide two applications of this framework, namely efficient deterministic approximate counting algorithms for hypergraph independent sets and hypergraph colourings, under local lemma type conditions matching, up to lower order factors, their state-of-the-art randomised counterparts.

Inapproximability of counting hypergraph colourings

Recent developments in approximate counting have made startling progress in developing fast algorithmic methods for approximating the number of solutions to constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) with large arities, using connections to the Lovasz Local Lemma. Nevertheless, the boundaries of these methods for CSPs with non-Boolean domain are not well-understood. Our goal in this paper is to fill in this gap and obtain strong inapproximability results by studying the prototypical problem in this class of CSPs, hypergraph colourings. More precisely, we focus on the problem of approximately counting $q$-colourings on $K$-uniform hypergraphs with bounded degree $Δ$. An efficient algorithm exists if $Δ\lesssim \frac{q^{K/3-1}}{4^KK^2}$ (Jain, Pham, and Vuong, 2021; He, Sun, and Wu, 2021). Somewhat surprisingly however, a hardness bound is not known even for the easier problem of finding colourings. For the counting problem, the situation is even less clear and there is no evidence of the right constant controlling the growth of the exponent in terms of $K$. To this end, we first establish that for general $q$ computational hardness for finding a colouring on simple/linear hypergraphs occurs at $Δ\gtrsim Kq^K$, almost matching the algorithm from the Lovasz Local Lemma. Our second and main contribution is to obtain a far more refined bound for the counting problem that goes well beyond the hardness of finding a colouring and which we conjecture that is asymptotically tight (up to constant factors). We show in particular that for all even $q\geq 4$ it is NP-hard to approximate the number of colourings when $Δ\gtrsim q^{K/2}$.

Swendsen-Wang dynamics for the ferromagnetic Ising model with external fields

We study the sampling problem for the ferromagnetic Ising model with consistent external fields, and in particular, Swendsen-Wang dynamics on this model. We introduce a new grand model unifying two closely related models: the subgraph world and the random cluster model. Through this new viewpoint, we show: (1) polynomial mixing time bounds for Swendsen-Wang dynamics and (edge-flipping) Glauber dynamics of the random cluster model, generalising the bounds and simplifying the proofs for the no-field case by Guo and Jerrum (2018); (2) near linear mixing time for the two dynamics above if the maximum degree is bounded and all fields are (consistent and) bounded away from $1$.

Improved bounds for randomly colouring simple hypergraphs

We study the problem of sampling almost uniform proper $q$-colourings in $k$-uniform simple hypergraphs with maximum degree $Δ$. For any $δ> 0$, if $k \geq\frac{20(1+δ)}δ$ and $q \geq 100Δ^{\frac{2+δ}{k-4/δ-4}}$, the running time of our algorithm is $\tilde{O}(\mathrm{poly}(Δk)\cdot n^{1.01})$, where $n$ is the number of vertices. Our result requires fewer colours than previous results for general hypergraphs (Jain, Pham, and Voung, 2021; He, Sun, and Wu, 2021), and does not require $Ω(\log n)$ colours unlike the work of Frieze and Anastos (2017).

Downlink Transmit Design for Massive MIMO LEO Satellite Communications

This paper investigates the downlink (DL) transmit design for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite communication systems, where only the slow-varying statistical channel state information is exploited at the transmitter. The channel model for the DL massive MIMO LEO satellite system is established, in which both the satellite and the user terminals (UTs) are equipped with uniform planar arrays. Observing the rank-one property of the channel matrices, we show that the single-stream precoding for each UT is the optimal choice that maximizes the ergodic sum rate. This favorable result simplifies the complicated design of transmit covariance matrices into that of precoding vectors without any loss of optimality. Then, an efficient algorithm is devised to compute the precoding vectors. Furthermore, we formulate an approximate transmit design based on the upper bound on the ergodic sum rate, for which the optimality of single-stream precoding still holds. We show that, in this case, the design of precoding vectors can be simplified into that of scalar variables, for which an effective algorithm is developed. In addition, a low-complexity learning framework is proposed for optimizing the scalar variables. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approaches can achieve significant performance gains over the existing schemes.

Optimal Discrete Constellation Inputs for Aggregated LiFi-WiFi Networks

In this paper, we investigate the performance of a practical aggregated LiFi-WiFi system with the discrete constellation inputs from a practical view. We derive the achievable rate expressions of the aggregated LiFi-WiFi system for the first time. Then, we study the rate maximization problem via optimizing the constellation distribution and power allocation jointly. Specifically, a multilevel mercy-filling power allocation scheme is proposed by exploiting the relationship between the mutual information and minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) of discrete inputs. Meanwhile, an inexact gradient descent method is proposed for obtaining the optimal probability distributions. To strike a balance between the computational complexity and the transmission performance, we further develop a framework that maximizes the lower bound of the achievable rate where the optimal power allocation can be obtained in closed forms and the constellation distributions problem can be solved efficiently by Frank-Wolfe method. Extensive numerical results show that the optimized strategies are able to provide significant gains over the state-of-the-art schemes in terms of the achievable rate.

On the Degree of Boolean Functions as Polynomials over $\mathbb{Z}_m$

Polynomial representations of Boolean functions over various rings such as $\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_m$ have been studied since Minsky and Papert (1969). From then on, they have been employed in a large variety of fields including communication complexity, circuit complexity, learning theory, coding theory and so on. For any integer $m\ge2$, each Boolean function has a unique multilinear polynomial representation over ring $\mathbb Z_m$. The degree of such polynomial is called modulo-$m$ degree, denoted as $\mathrm{deg}_m(\cdot)$. In this paper, we investigate the lower bound of modulo-$m$ degree of Boolean functions. When $m=p^k$ ($k\ge 1$) for some prime $p$, we give a tight lower bound that $\mathrm{deg}_m(f)\geq k(p-1)$ for any non-degenerated function $f:\{0,1\}^n\to\{0,1\}$, provided that $n$ is sufficient large. When $m$ contains two different prime factors $p$ and $q$, we give a nearly optimal lower bound for any symmetric function $f:\{0,1\}^n\to\{0,1\}$ that $\mathrm{deg}_m(f) \geq \frac{n}{2+\frac{1}{p-1}+\frac{1}{q-1}}$.

Massive MIMO Transmission for LEO Satellite Communications

Low earth orbit (LEO) satellite communications are expected to be incorporated in future wireless networks, in particular 5G and beyond networks, to provide global wireless access with enhanced data rates. Massive MIMO techniques, though widely used in terrestrial communication systems, have not been applied to LEO satellite communication systems. In this paper, we propose a massive MIMO transmission scheme with full frequency reuse (FFR) for LEO satellite communication systems and exploit statistical channel state information (sCSI) to address the difficulty of obtaining instantaneous CSI (iCSI) at the transmitter. We first establish the massive MIMO channel model for LEO satellite communications and simplify the transmission designs via performing Doppler and delay compensations at user terminals (UTs). Then, we develop the low-complexity sCSI based downlink (DL) precoder and uplink (UL) receiver in closed-form, aiming to maximize the average signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio (ASLNR) and the average signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (ASINR), respectively. It is shown that the DL ASLNRs and UL ASINRs of all UTs reach their upper bounds under some channel condition. Motivated by this, we propose a space angle based user grouping (SAUG) algorithm to schedule the served UTs into different groups, where each group of UTs use the same time and frequency resource. The proposed algorithm is asymptotically optimal in the sense that the lower and upper bounds of the achievable rate coincide when the number of satellite antennas or UT groups is sufficiently large. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed massive MIMO transmission scheme with FFR significantly enhances the data rate of LEO satellite communication systems. Notably, the proposed sCSI based precoder and receiver achieve the similar performance with the iCSI based ones that are often infeasible in practice.

Power Efficient IRS-Assisted NOMA

In this paper, we propose a downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) transmission scheme, which is assisted by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) consisting of a large number of passive reflecting elements. In the literature, it has been proved that nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can achieve the capacity region when the channels are quasi-degraded. However, in a conventional communication scenario, it is difficult to guarantee the quasi-degradation, because the channels are determined by the propagation environments and cannot be reconfigured. To overcome this difficulty, we focus on an IRS-assisted MISO NOMA system, where the wireless channels can be effectively tuned. We optimize the beamforming vectors and the IRS phase shift matrix for minimizing transmission power. Furthermore, we propose an improved quasi-degradation condition by using IRS, which can ensure that NOMA achieves the capacity region with high possibility. For a comparison, we study zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) as well, where the beamforming vectors and the IRS phase shift matrix are also jointly optimized. Comparing NOMA with ZFBF, it is shown that, with the same IRS phase shift matrix and the improved quasi-degradation condition, NOMA always outperforms ZFBF. At the same time, we identify the condition under which ZFBF outperforms NOMA, which motivates the proposed hybrid NOMA transmission. Simulation results show that the proposed IRS-assisted MISO system outperforms the MISO case without IRS, and the hybrid NOMA transmission scheme always achieves better performance than orthogonal multiple access.

Cache-Enabled Coordinated Mobile Edge Network: Opportunities and Challenges

Cache-enabled coordinated mobile edge network is an emerging network architecture, wherein serving nodes located at the network edge have the capabilities of baseband signal processing and caching files at their local cache. The main goals of such an emerging network architecture are to alleviate the burden on fronthaul links, while achieving low-latency high rate content delivery, say on the order of the millisecond level end-to-end content delivery latency. Consequently, the application of delaysensitive and content-aware has been executed in close proximity to end users. In this article, an outlook of research directions, challenges, and opportunities is provided and discussed in depth. We first introduce the cache-enabled coordinated mobile edge network architecture, and then discuss the key technical challenges and opening research issues that need to be addressed for this architecture. Then, to reduce the delivery latency and the burden on fronthaul links, new cache-enabled physical layer transmission schemes are discussed. Finally, artificial intelligence based cache-enabled communications are discussed as future research directions. Numerical studies show that several gains are achieved by caching popular content at the network edge with proper coordinated transmission schemes.
