Practical Modeling and Analysis of Blockchain Radio Access Network

The continually rising demand for wireless services and applications in the era of Internet of things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) presents a significant number of unprecedented challenges to existing network structures. To meet the rapid growth need of mobile data services, blockchain radio access network (B-RAN) has emerged as a decentralized, trustworthy radio access paradigm spurred by blockchain technologies. However, many characteristics of B-RAN remain unclear and hard to characterize. In this study, we develop an analytical framework to model B-RAN and provide some basic fundamental analysis. Starting from block generation, we establish a queuing model based on a time-homogeneous Markov chain. From the queuing model, we evaluate the performance of B-RAN with respect to latency and security considerations. By connecting latency and security, we uncover a more comprehensive picture of the achievable performance of B-RAN. Further, we present experimental results via an innovative prototype and validate the proposed model.

Cloud-Edge Coordinated Processing: Low-Latency Multicasting Transmission

Recently, edge caching and multicasting arise as two promising technologies to support high-data-rate and low-latency delivery in wireless communication networks. In this paper, we design three transmission schemes aiming to minimize the delivery latency for cache-enabled multigroup multicasting networks. In particular, full caching bulk transmission scheme is first designed as a performance benchmark for the ideal situation where the caching capability of each enhanced remote radio head (eRRH) is sufficient large to cache all files. For the practical situation where the caching capability of each eRRH is limited, we further design two transmission schemes, namely partial caching bulk transmission (PCBT) and partial caching pipelined transmission (PCPT) schemes. In the PCBT scheme, eRRHs first fetch the uncached requested files from the baseband unit (BBU) and then all requested files are simultaneously transmitted to the users. In the PCPT scheme, eRRHs first transmit the cached requested files while fetching the uncached requested files from the BBU. Then, the remaining cached requested files and fetched uncached requested files are simultaneously transmitted to the users. The design goal of the three transmission schemes is to minimize the delivery latency, subject to some practical constraints. Efficient algorithms are developed for the low-latency cloud-edge coordinated transmission strategies. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed transmission schemes and show that the PCPT scheme outperforms the PCBT scheme in terms of the delivery latency criterion.

Unified Framework of KKT Conditions Based Matrix Optimizations for MIMO Communications

For multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication systems, many transceiver design problems involve the optimization of the covariance matrices of the transmitted signals. The derivation of the optimal solutions based on Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions is a most popular method, and many results have been reported for different scenarios of MIMO systems. In this overview paper, we propose a unified framework in formulating the KKT conditions for general MIMO systems. Based on this framework, the optimal water-filling structures of the transmission covariance matrices are derived rigorously, which are applicable to a wide range of MIMO systems. Our results show that for seemingly different MIMO systems with various power constraints and objective functions, the derivations and water-filling structures for the optimal covariance matrix solutions are fundamentally the same. Thus, our unified framework and solution reveal the underlying relationships among the different water-filling structures of the covariance matrices. Furthermore, our results provide new solutions to the covariance matrix optimization of many complicated MIMO systems with multiple users and imperfect channel state information which were unknown before.

Beam Domain Massive MIMO for Optical Wireless Communications with Transmit Lens

This paper presents a novel massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission in beam domain for optical wireless communications. The optical base station equipped with massive optical transmitters communicates with a number of user terminals (UTs) through a transmit lens. Focusing on LED transmitters, we analyze light refraction of the lens and establish a channel model for optical massive MIMO transmissions. For a large number of LEDs, channel vectors of different UTs become asymptotically orthogonal. We investigate the maximum ratio transmission and regularized zero-forcing precoding in the optical massive MIMO system, and propose a linear precoding design to maximize the sum rate. We further design the precoding when the number of transmitters grows asymptotically large, and show that beam division multiple access (BDMA) transmission achieves the asymptotically optimal performance for sum rate maximization. Unlike optical MIMO without a transmit lens, BDMA can increase the sum rate proportionally to $2K$ and $K$ under the total and per transmitter power constraints, respectively, where $K$ is the number of UTs. In the non-asymptotic case, we prove the orthogonality conditions of the optimal power allocation in beam domain and propose efficient beam allocation algorithms. Numerical results confirm the significantly improved performance of our proposed beam domain optical massive MIMO communication approaches.

Signal Processing for MIMO-NOMA: Present and Future Challenges

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), as the newest member of the multiple access family, is envisioned to be an essential component of 5G mobile networks. The combination of NOMA and multi-antenna multi-input multi-output (MIMO) technologies exhibits a significant potential in improving spectral efficiency and providing better wireless services to more users. In this article, we introduce the basic concepts of MIMO-NOMA and summarize the key technical problems in MIMO-NOMA systems. Then, we explore the problem formulation, beamforming, user clustering, and power allocation of single/multi-cluster MIMO-NOMA in the literature along with their limitations. Furthermore, we point out an important issue of the stability of successive interference cancellation (SIC) that arises using achievable rates as performance metrics in practical NOMA/MIMO-NOMA systems. Finally, we discuss incorporating NOMA with massive/millimeter wave MIMO, and identify the main challenges and possible future research directions in this area.

On Optimal Power Allocation for Downlink Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Systems

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) enables power-domain multiplexing via successive interference cancellation (SIC) and has been viewed as a promising technology for 5G communication. The full benefit of NOMA depends on resource allocation, including power allocation and channel assignment, for all users, which, however, leads to mixed integer programs. In the literature, the optimal power allocation has only been found in some special cases, while the joint optimization of power allocation and channel assignment generally requires exhaustive search. In this paper, we investigate resource allocation in downlink NOMA systems. As the main contribution, we analytically characterize the optimal power allocation with given channel assignment over multiple channels under different performance criteria. Specifically, we consider the maximin fairness, weighted sum rate maximization, sum rate maximization with quality of service (QoS) constraints, energy efficiency maximization with weights or QoS constraints in NOMA systems. We also take explicitly into account the order constraints on the powers of the users on each channel, which are often ignored in theexisting works, and show that they have a significant impact on SIC in NOMA systems. Then, we provide the optimal power allocation for the considered criteria in closed or semi-closed form. We also propose a low-complexity efficient method to jointly optimize channel assignment and power allocation in NOMA systems by incorporating the matching algorithm with the optimal power allocation. Simulation results show that the joint resource optimization using our optimal power allocation yields better performance than the existing schemes.

Codebook Based Hybrid Precoding for Millimeter Wave Multiuser Systems

In millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, antenna architecture limitations make it difficult to apply conventional fully digital precoding techniques but call for low cost analog radio-frequency (RF) and digital baseband hybrid precoding methods. This paper investigates joint RF-baseband hybrid precoding for the downlink of multiuser multi-antenna mmWave systems with a limited number of RF chains. Two performance measures, maximizing the spectral efficiency and the energy efficiency of the system, are considered. We propose a codebook based RF precoding design and obtain the channel state information via a beam sweep procedure. Via the codebook based design, the original system is transformed into a virtual multiuser downlink system with the RF chain constraint. Consequently, we are able to simplify the complicated hybrid precoding optimization problems to joint codeword selection and precoder design (JWSPD) problems. Then, we propose efficient methods to address the JWSPD problems and jointly optimize the RF and baseband precoders under the two performance measures. Finally, extensive numerical results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid precoders.

Distributed Optimization of Hierarchical Small Cell Networks: A GNEP Framework

Deployment of small cell base stations (SBSs) overlaying the coverage area of a macrocell BS (MBS) results in a two-tier hierarchical small cell network. Cross-tier and inter-tier interference not only jeopardize primary macrocell communication but also limit the spectral efficiency of small cell communication. This paper focuses on distributed interference management for downlink small cell networks. We address the optimization of transmit strategies from both the game theoretical and the network utility maximization (NUM) perspectives and show that they can be unified in a generalized Nash equilibrium problem (GNEP) framework. Specifically, the small cell network design is first formulated as a GNEP, where the SBSs and MBS compete for the spectral resources by maximizing their own rates while satisfying global quality of service (QoS) constraints. We analyze the GNEP via variational inequality theory and propose distributed algorithms, which only require the broadcasting of some pricing information, to achieve a generalized Nash equilibrium (GNE). Then, we also consider a nonconvex NUM problem that aims to maximize the sum rate of all BSs subject to global QoS constraints. We establish the connection between the NUM problem and a penalized GNEP and show that its stationary solution can be obtained via a fixed point iteration of the GNE. We propose GNEP-based distributed algorithms that achieve a stationary solution of the NUM problem at the expense of additional signaling overhead and complexity. The convergence of the proposed algorithms is proved and guaranteed for properly chosen algorithm parameters. The proposed GNEP framework can scale from a QoS constrained game to a NUM design for small cell networks by trading off signaling overhead and complexity.

Energy-Efficient Resource Assignment and Power Allocation in Heterogeneous Cloud Radio Access Networks

Taking full advantages of both heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and cloud access radio access networks (CRANs), heterogeneous cloud radio access networks (H-CRANs) are presented to enhance both the spectral and energy efficiencies, where remote radio heads (RRHs) are mainly used to provide high data rates for users with high quality of service (QoS) requirements, while the high power node (HPN) is deployed to guarantee the seamless coverage and serve users with low QoS requirements. To mitigate the inter-tier interference and improve EE performances in H-CRANs, characterizing user association with RRH/HPN is considered in this paper, and the traditional soft fractional frequency reuse (S-FFR) is enhanced. Based on the RRH/HPN association constraint and the enhanced S-FFR, an energy-efficient optimization problem with the resource assignment and power allocation for the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based H-CRANs is formulated as a non-convex objective function. To deal with the non-convexity, an equivalent convex feasibility problem is reformulated, and closedform expressions for the energy-efficient resource allocation solution to jointly allocate the resource block and transmit power are derived by the Lagrange dual decomposition method. Simulation results confirm that the H-CRAN architecture and the corresponding resource allocation solution can enhance the energy efficiency significantly.
