PnP Restoration with Domain Adaptation for SANS

Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) is a non-destructive technique utilized to probe the nano- to mesoscale structure of materials by analyzing the scattering pattern of neutrons. Accelerating SANS acquisition for in-situ analysis is essential, but it often reduces the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), highlighting the need for methods to enhance SNR even with short acquisition times. While deep learning (DL) can be used for enhancing SNR of low quality SANS, the amount of experimental data available for training is usually severely limited. We address this issue by proposing a Plug-and-play Restoration for SANS (PR-SANS) that uses domain-adapted priors. The prior in PR-SANS is initially trained on a set of generic images and subsequently fine-tuned using a limited amount of experimental SANS data. We present a theoretical convergence analysis of PR-SANS by focusing on the error resulting from using inexact domain-adapted priors instead of the ideal ones. We demonstrate with experimentally collected SANS data that PR-SANS can recover high-SNR 2D SANS detector images from low-SNR detector images, effectively increasing the SNR. This advancement enables a reduction in acquisition times by a factor of 12 while maintaining the original signal quality.

Long-term and Real-time High-speed Underwater Wireless Optical Communications in Deep Sea

Seafloor observation network can perform all-weather, long-term, continuous, real-time, and in-situ observation of the ocean by combing various observation methods including cabled seafloor nodes, self-contained nodes, as well as mobile platforms, where reliable and long-term high-speed underwater wireless communication becomes an essential demand. Recently, underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) has emerged as a highly promising solution and is rapidly becoming a research hotspot for meeting this requirement. In this article, we demonstrate the experiment and application of high-speed UWOC system for deep sea seafloor observation network. To the best of our knowledge this is the first long-term real-time deep-sea UWOC link with bitrate as high as 125 Mbps. Between 30 m distance and at a depth of 1650 m, two-way Ethernet UWOC links are realized with 125 Mbps direction-adjustable green light link and 6.25 Mbps non-line-of-sight (NLOS) blue light link. High quality video transmission of 8K 30 FPS and 4K 120 FPS are realized through high-speed 125 Mbps green light link, with 100% peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) agreement, showing the capability of transmitting high-quality videos lossless. The 30-day long-term measurement results show that the BER performance of both 125 Mbps and 6.25 Mbps links is lower than 10-5, proving the stability and reliability of this UWOC system at depth of 1650 m. The maximum transmission distance for the green and blue light links are estimated to be 117.7 and 128.3 m with considering the geometry loss, which can be extended to 231.6 and 337.5 m without geometry loss. As the first long-term and real-time UWOC system in deep sea, we believe this demonstration can provide valuable experience for further UWOC studies and converged ocean observation networking with cabled and cable-less observation platforms.

Realization of programmable Ising models in a trapped-ion quantum simulator

A promising paradigm of quantum computing for achieving practical quantum advantages is quantum annealing or quantum approximate optimization algorithm, where the classical problems are encoded in Ising interactions. However, it is challenging to build a quantum system that can efficiently map any structured problems. Here, we present a programmable trapped-ion quantum simulator of an Ising model with all-to-all connectivity with up to four spins. We implement the spin-spin interactions by using the coupling of trapped ions to multiple collective motional modes and realize the programmability through phase modulation of the Raman laser beams that are individually addressed on ions. As an example, we realize several Ising lattices with different interaction connectivities, where the interactions can be ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic. We confirm the programmed interaction geometry by observing the ground states of the corresponding models through quantum state tomography. Our experimental demonstrations serve as an important basis for realizing practical quantum advantages with trapped ions.

Analysis of Light Attenuation Length Measurement of a High Quality Linear Alkylbenzene for the JUNO Experiment

Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is the next generation neutrino experiment which aims at neutrino mass hierarchy problem along with many other cutting-edge studies concerning neutrinos. Located 700m underground in Jiangmen China, JUNO's central detector is an acrylic sphere filled with 20kt liquid scintillator with linear alkylbenzene(LAB) as scintillator solvent. To ensure that an unprecedented energy resolution of $σ_E/E \leqslant 3\%$ can be reached, LAB used in JUNO must have excellent transparency at the wavelength ranging from 350nm to 450nm. In the past decade much effort has been devoted to the development of high transparency LAB based on the measurement of light attenuation length. Through a close cooperation with Jingling Petrochemical Corporation in Nanjing, transparency of LAB samples prepared for JUNO has been improved progressively. However, this improvement is also pushing our apparatus towards approaching its measuring limit, undermining the credibility of our measurement. In order to get a result accurate and precise, an apparatus upgrading and a more detailed error analysis is inevitable. In this article, we present an analysis of how apparatus upgrading helps with decreasing measuring errors, and we conducted measurements using the new apparatus on several samples. A detailed error analysis is followed to validate the results. We propose to apply statistical methods featuring Monte Carlo simulation to estimate systematic uncertainties. Deviations caused by fit models is also considered and the overall uncertainty is obtained by combining two independent measurements. We finally report the light attenuation length of a newly improved LAB sample to be $29.90\pm 0.95$m, which gives a new high of all the preceding samples we tested. This study may provide a strong evidence of JUNO's feasibility to reach its energy resolution.

Optical property measurements of lithium chloride aqueous solution for a novel solar neutrino experiment

The lithium chloride aqueous solution has great potential to be the detection medium of a novel solar neutrino detector. The nuclide \ce{^7 Li} provides a charged-current interaction channel with a high cross-section for the MeV-scale solar electron-neutrinos, enabling measurement of the solar neutrino spectrum. This work measures the optical properties and the light yields of a saturated lithium chloride solution. After adsorption with activated carbon and recrystallization, the solution shows little absorption in the sensitive wavelength range of the bialkali photomultipliers. The attenuation length is evaluated to reach 50 meters at 430 nm. In addition to being a pure Cherenkov detector medium, a wavelength shifter, carbostyril 124, is added to the LiCl aqueous solution. The compatibility and the enhancement of the light yield are confirmed, enabling the development of a water-based Cherenkov-enhanced lithium-rich detector.

End-to-end Weakly-supervised Single-stage Multiple 3D Hand Mesh Reconstruction from a Single RGB Image

In this paper, we consider the challenging task of simultaneously locating and recovering multiple hands from a single 2D image. Previous studies either focus on single hand reconstruction or solve this problem in a multi-stage way. Moreover, the conventional two-stage pipeline firstly detects hand areas, and then estimates 3D hand pose from each cropped patch. To reduce the computational redundancy in preprocessing and feature extraction, for the first time, we propose a concise but efficient single-stage pipeline for multi-hand reconstruction. Specifically, we design a multi-head auto-encoder structure, where each head network shares the same feature map and outputs the hand center, pose and texture, respectively. Besides, we adopt a weakly-supervised scheme to alleviate the burden of expensive 3D real-world data annotations. To this end, we propose a series of losses optimized by a stage-wise training scheme, where a multi-hand dataset with 2D annotations is generated based on the publicly available single hand datasets. In order to further improve the accuracy of the weakly supervised model, we adopt several feature consistency constraints in both single and multiple hand settings. Specifically, the keypoints of each hand estimated from local features should be consistent with the re-projected points predicted from global features. Extensive experiments on public benchmarks including FreiHAND, HO3D, InterHand2.6M and RHD demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art model-based methods in both weakly-supervised and fully-supervised manners. UniDexGrasp: Universal Robotic Dexterous Grasping via Learning Diverse Proposal Generation and Goal-Conditioned Policy

In this work, we tackle the problem of learning universal robotic dexterous grasping from a point cloud observation under a table-top setting. The goal is to grasp and lift up objects in high-quality and diverse ways and generalize across hundreds of categories and even the unseen. Inspired by successful pipelines used in parallel gripper grasping, we split the task into two stages: 1) grasp proposal (pose) generation and 2) goal-conditioned grasp execution. For the first stage, we propose a novel probabilistic model of grasp pose conditioned on the point cloud observation that factorizes rotation from translation and articulation. Trained on our synthesized large-scale dexterous grasp dataset, this model enables us to sample diverse and high-quality dexterous grasp poses for the object point cloud. For the second stage, we propose to replace the motion planning used in parallel gripper grasping with a goal-conditioned grasp policy, due to the complexity involved in dexterous grasping execution. Note that it is very challenging to learn this highly generalizable grasp policy that only takes realistic inputs without oracle states. We thus propose several important innovations, including state canonicalization, object curriculum, and teacher-student distillation. Integrating the two stages, our final pipeline becomes the first to achieve universal generalization for dexterous grasping, demonstrating an average success rate of more than 60\% on thousands of object instances, which significantly outperforms all baselines, meanwhile showing only a minimal generalization gap.

DexGraspNet: A Large-Scale Robotic Dexterous Grasp Dataset for General Objects Based on Simulation

Robotic dexterous grasping is the first step to enable human-like dexterous object manipulation and thus a crucial robotic technology. However, dexterous grasping is much more under-explored than object grasping with parallel grippers, partially due to the lack of a large-scale dataset. In this work, we present a large-scale robotic dexterous grasp dataset, DexGraspNet, generated by our proposed highly efficient synthesis method that can be generally applied to any dexterous hand. Our method leverages a deeply accelerated differentiable force closure estimator and thus can efficiently and robustly synthesize stable and diverse grasps on a large scale. We choose ShadowHand and generate 1.32 million grasps for 5355 objects, covering more than 133 object categories and containing more than 200 diverse grasps for each object instance, with all grasps having been validated by the Isaac Gym simulator. Compared to the previous dataset from Liu et al. generated by GraspIt!, our dataset has not only more objects and grasps, but also higher diversity and quality. Via performing cross-dataset experiments, we show that training several algorithms of dexterous grasp synthesis on our dataset significantly outperforms training on the previous one. Error-Mitigated Quantum Simulation of Interacting Fermions with Trapped Ions

Quantum error mitigation has been extensively explored to increase the accuracy of the quantum circuits in noisy-intermediate-scale-quantum (NISQ) computation, where quantum error correction requiring additional quantum resources is not adopted. Among various error-mitigation schemes, probabilistic error cancellation (PEC) has been proposed as a general and systematic protocol that can be applied to numerous hardware platforms and quantum algorithms. However, PEC has only been tested in two-qubit systems and a superconducting multi-qubit system by learning a sparse error model. Here, we benchmark PEC using up to four trapped-ion qubits. For the benchmark, we simulate the dynamics of interacting fermions with or without spins by applying multiple Trotter steps. By tomographically reconstructing the error model and incorporating other mitigation methods such as positive probability and symmetry constraints, we are able to increase the fidelity of simulation and faithfully observe the dynamics of the Fermi-Hubbard model, including the different behavior of charge and spin of fermions. Our demonstrations can be an essential step for further extending systematic error-mitigation schemes toward practical quantum advantages.

Scalable and Programmable Phononic Network with Trapped Ions

Controllable bosonic systems can provide post-classical computational power with sub-universal quantum computational capability. A network that consists of a number of bosons evolving through beam-splitters and phase-shifters between different modes, has been proposed and applied to demonstrate quantum advantages. While the network has been implemented mostly in optical systems with photons, recently alternative realizations have been explored, where major limitations in photonic systems such as photon loss, and probabilistic manipulation can be addressed. Phonons, the quantized excitations of vibrational modes, of trapped ions can be a promising candidate to realize the bosonic network. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a minimal-loss phononic network that can be programmed and in which any phononic states are deterministically prepared and detected. We realize the network with up to four collective-vibrational modes, which can be straightforwardly extended to reveal quantum advantage. We benchmark the performance of the network with an exemplary algorithm of tomography for arbitrary multi-mode states with a fixed total phonon number. We obtain reconstruction fidelities of 94.5 $\pm$ 1.95 % and 93.4 $\pm$ 3.15 % for single-phonon and two-phonon states, respectively. Our experiment demonstrates a clear and novel pathway to scale up a phononic network for various quantum information processing beyond the limitations of classical and other quantum systems.

The Potential to Probe Solar Neutrino Physics with LiCl Water Solution

Lithium chloride water solution is a good option for solar neutrino detection. The $ν_e$ charged-current (CC) interaction cross-section on $\rm{{}^{7}Li}$ is evaluated with new B(GT) experimental measurements. The total CC interaction cross-section weighted by the solar $^8$B electron neutrino spectrum is $3.759\times10^{-42} \rm{cm}^2$, which is about 60 times that of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering process. The final state effective kinetic energy after the CC interaction on $\rm{{}^{7}Li}$ directly reflects the neutrino energy, which stands in sharp contrast to the plateau structure of recoil electrons of the elastic scattering. With the high solubility of LiCl of 74.5 g/100 g water at 10$^\circ$C and the high natural abundance of 92.41%, the molarity of $\rm{{}^{7}Li}$ in water can reach 11 mol/L for safe operation at room temperature. The CC event rate of $ν_e$ on $\rm{{}^{7}Li}$ in the LiCl water solution is comparable to that of neutrino-electron elastic scattering. In addition, the $ν_e$ CC interaction with the contained $\rm{{}^{37}Cl}$ also contributes a few percent of the total CC event rate. The contained $\rm{{}^{35}Cl}$ and $\rm{{}^{6}Li}$ also make a delay-coincidence detection for electron antineutrinos possible. The recrystallization method is found to be applicable for LiCl sample purification. The measured attenuation length of $11\pm1$ m at 430 nm shows that the LiCl solution is practicable for a 10-m diameter detector for solar neutrino detection. Clear advantages are found in studying the upturn effect of solar neutrino oscillation, light sterile neutrinos, and Earth matter effect. The sensitivities in discovering solar neutrino upturn and light sterile neutrinos are shown.

Weakly-Supervised Multi-Face 3D Reconstruction

3D face reconstruction plays a very important role in many real-world multimedia applications, including digital entertainment, social media, affection analysis, and person identification. The de-facto pipeline for estimating the parametric face model from an image requires to firstly detect the facial regions with landmarks, and then crop each face to feed the deep learning-based regressor. Comparing to the conventional methods performing forward inference for each detected instance independently, we suggest an effective end-to-end framework for multi-face 3D reconstruction, which is able to predict the model parameters of multiple instances simultaneously using single network inference. Our proposed approach not only greatly reduces the computational redundancy in feature extraction but also makes the deployment procedure much easier using the single network model. More importantly, we employ the same global camera model for the reconstructed faces in each image, which makes it possible to recover the relative head positions and orientations in the 3D scene. We have conducted extensive experiments to evaluate our proposed approach on the sparse and dense face alignment tasks. The experimental results indicate that our proposed approach is very promising on face alignment tasks without fully-supervision and pre-processing like detection and crop. Our implementation is publicly available at \url{https://github.com/kalyo-zjl/WM3DR}.

Attribute-aware Pedestrian Detection in a Crowd

Pedestrian detection is an initial step to perform outdoor scene analysis, which plays an essential role in many real-world applications. Although having enjoyed the merits of deep learning frameworks from the generic object detectors, pedestrian detection is still a very challenging task due to heavy occlusion and highly crowded group. Generally, the conventional detectors are unable to differentiate individuals from each other effectively under such a dense environment. To tackle this critical problem, we propose an attribute-aware pedestrian detector to explicitly model people's semantic attributes in a high-level feature detection fashion. Besides the typical semantic features, center position, target's scale and offset, we introduce a pedestrian-oriented attribute feature to encode the high-level semantic differences among the crowd. Moreover, a novel attribute-feature-based Non-Maximum Suppression~(NMS) is proposed to distinguish the person from a highly overlapped group by adaptively rejecting the false-positive results in a very crowd settings. Furthermore, a novel ground truth target is designed to alleviate the difficulties caused by the attribute configuration and extremely class imbalance issues during training. Finally, we evaluate our proposed attribute-aware pedestrian detector on two benchmark datasets including CityPersons and CrowdHuman. The experimental results show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods at a large margin on pedestrian detection.

Scalable global entangling gates on arbitrary ion qubits

A quantum algorithm can be decomposed into a sequence consisting of single qubit and 2-qubit entangling gates. To optimize the decomposition and achieve more efficient construction of the quantum circuit, we can replace multiple 2-qubit gates with a single global entangling gate. Here, we propose and implement a scalable scheme to realize the global entangling gates on multiple $\yb$ ion qubits by coupling to multiple motional modes through external fields. Such global gates require simultaneously decoupling of multiple motional modes and balancing of the coupling strengths for all the qubit-pairs at the gate time. To satisfy the complicated requirements, we develop a trapped-ion system with fully-independent control capability on each ion, and experimentally realize the global entangling gates. As examples, we utilize them to prepare the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states in a single entangling operation, and successfully show the genuine multi-partite entanglements up to four qubits with the state fidelities over $93.4\%$.

The origin of grain size effects in Ba(Ti0.96Sn0.04)O3 perovskite ceramics with superior electrical properties

The study of grain size effects in ferroelectric ceramics has attracted great research interest over the last 50 years. Although different theoretical models have been proposed to account for the variation in structure and properties with grain size, the underlying mechanisms are still under debate, creating a significant level of uncertainty in the field. Here, we report the results of a study on the influence of grain size on the structural and physical properties of Ba(Ti0.96Sn0.04)O3, which represents a model perovskite system, where the effects of point defects, stoichiometry imbalance and phase transitions are minimized by Sn substitution. It was found that different microscopic mechanisms are responsible for the various grain size dependences observed. In fine-grained ceramics, high permittivity is due to high domain wall density and polar nanoregions; high d33 in coarse-grained ceramics results from a high degree of domain alignment during poling; large electric field-induced strain in intermediate-grained ceramics is an outcome of a favourable interplay between constraints from grain boundaries and reversible reorientation of non-180 degree domains and polar nanoregions. These paradigms can be regarded as general guidelines for the optimization of specific properties through grain size control.

Feature Agglomeration Networks for Single Stage Face Detection

Recent years have witnessed promising results of face detection using deep learning. Despite making remarkable progresses, face detection in the wild remains an open research challenge especially when detecting faces at vastly different scales and characteristics. In this paper, we propose a novel simple yet effective framework of "Feature Agglomeration Networks" (FANet) to build a new single stage face detector, which not only achieves state-of-the-art performance but also runs efficiently. As inspired by Feature Pyramid Networks (FPN), the key idea of our framework is to exploit inherent multi-scale features of a single convolutional neural network by aggregating higher-level semantic feature maps of different scales as contextual cues to augment lower-level feature maps via a hierarchical agglomeration manner at marginal extra computation cost. We further propose a Hierarchical Loss to effectively train the FANet model. We evaluate the proposed FANet detector on several public face detection benchmarks, including PASCAL face, FDDB and WIDER FACE datasets and achieved state-of-the-art results. Our detector can run in real time for VGA-resolution images on GPU.

Effective Static and Adaptive Carrier Sensing for Dense Wireless CSMA Networks

The increasingly dense deployments of wireless CSMA networks arising from applications of Internet-of-things call for an improvement to mitigate the interference among simultaneous transmitting wireless devices. For cost efficiency and backward compatibility with legacy transceiver hardware, a simple approach to address interference is by appropriately configuring the carrier sensing thresholds in wireless CSMA protocols, particularly in dense wireless networks. Most prior studies of the configuration of carrier sensing thresholds are based on a simplified conflict graph model, whereas this paper considers a realistic signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio model. We provide a comprehensive study for two effective wireless CSMA protocols: Cumulative-interference-Power Carrier Sensing and Incremental-interference-Power Carrier Sensing, in two aspects: (1) static approach that sets a universal carrier sensing threshold to ensure interference-safe transmissions regardless of network topology, and (2) adaptive approach that adjusts the carrier sensing thresholds dynamically based on the feedback of nearby transmissions. We also provide simulation studies to evaluate the starvation ratio, fairness, and goodput of our approaches.
