Path Integral Molecular Dynamics for Exact Quantum Statistics of Multi-Electronic-State Systems

An exact approach to compute physical properties for general multi-electronic-state (MES) systems in thermal equilibrium is presented. The approach is extended from our recent progress on path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) [J. Chem. Phys. 145, 024103 (2016); 147, 034109 (2017)] for quantum statistical mechanics when a single potential energy surface is involved. We first define an effective potential function that is numerically favorable for MES-PIMD, and then derive corresponding estimators in MES-PIMD for evaluating various physical properties. Its application to several representative one-dimensional and multi-dimensional models demonstrates that MES-PIMD in principle offers a practical tool in either of the diabatic and adiabatic representations for studying exact quantum statistics of complex/large MES systems when the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, Condon approximation, and harmonic bath approximation are broken.

Tailoring of Grain Boundary Structure and Chemistry of Cathode Particles for Enhanced Cycle Stability of Lithium Ion Battery

The biggest challenge for the commercialization of layered structured nickel rich lithium transition metal oxide cathode is the capacity and voltage fading. Resolving this problem over the years follows an incremental progress. In this work, we report our finding of totally a new approach to revolutionize the cycle stability of aggregated cathode particles for lithium ion battery at both room and elevated temperatures. We discover that infusion of a solid electrolyte into the grain boundaries of the cathode secondary particles can dramatically enhance the capacity retention and voltage stability of the battery. We find that the solid electrolyte infused in the boundaries not only acts as a fast channel for Li ion transport, but also most importantly prevents penetration of the liquid electrolyte into the boundaries, consequently eliminating the detrimental factors that include solid-liquid interfacial reaction, intergranular cracking, and layer to spinel phase transformation. The present work, for the first time, reveals unprecedented insight as how the cathode behaves in the case of not contacting with the liquid electrolyte, ultimately points toward a general new route, via grain boundary engineering, for designing of better batteries of both solid-liquid and solid state systems.

Probing millicharged particles with ultrasensitive optical nonlinear sensor based on levitated cavity optomechanics

Particles with electric charge 10^(-12)e in bulk mass are not excluded by present experiments. In the present letter we provide a feasible scheme to measure the millicharged particles via the optical cavity coupled to a levitated microsphere. The results show that the optical probe spectrum of the micro-oscillator presents a distinct shift due to the existence of millicharged particles. Owing to the very narrow linewidth(10^(-7) Hz) of the optical Kerr effect, this shift will be more obvious, which makes the millicharges more easy to be detectable. We propose a method to eliminate the polarization force background via the homogeneously charged ring, which makes the scheme displays strong advantages in precision than the current experiments. The technique proposed here paves the way for new applications for probing dark matter and nonzero charged neutrino in the condensed matter.

SCTL: Towards Combining Model Checking and Proof Checking

Model checking and automated theorem proving are two pillars of formal methods. This paper investigates model checking from an automated theorem proving perspective, aiming at combining the expressiveness of automated theorem proving and the complete automaticity of model checking. The focus of this paper is on the verification of temporal logic properties of Kripke models. The main contributions of this paper are: first the definition of an extended computation tree logic that allows polyadic predicate symbols, then a proof system for this logic, taking Kripke models as parameters, then, the design of a proof-search algorithm for this calculus and a new automated theorem prover to implement it. The verification process is completely automatic, and produces either a counterexample when the property does not hold, or a certificate when it does. The experimental result compares well to existing state-of-the-art tools on some benchmarks, including an application to air traffic control and the design choices that lead to this efficiency are discussed.

Weightwise perfectly balanced functions with high weightwise nonlinearity profile

Boolean functions with good cryptographic criteria when restricted to the set of vectors with constant Hamming weight play an important role in the recent FLIP stream cipher. In this paper, we propose a large class of weightwise perfectly balanced (WPB) functions, which is not extended affinely (EA) equivalent to the known constructions. We also discuss the weightwise nonlinearity profile of these functions, and present general lower bounds on $k$-weightwise nonlinearity, where $k$ is a power of $2$. Moreover, we exhibit a subclass of the family. By a recursive lower bound, we show that these subclass of WPB functions have very high weightwise nonlinearity profile.

A lattice Maxwell system with discrete space-time symmetry and local energy-momentum conservation

A lattice Maxwell system is developed with gauge-symmetry, symplectic structure and discrete space-time symmetry. Noether's theorem for Lie group symmetries is generalized to discrete symmetries for the lattice Maxwell system. As a result, the lattice Maxwell system is shown to admit a discrete local energy-momentum conservation law corresponding to the discrete space-time symmetry. These conservative properties make the discrete system an effective algorithm for numerically solving the governing differential equations on continuous space-time. Moreover, the lattice model, respecting all conservation laws and geometric structures, is as good as and probably more preferable than the continuous Maxwell model. Under the simulation hypothesis by Bostrom and in consistent with the discussion on lattice QCD by Beane et al., the two interpretations of physics laws on space-time lattice could be essentially the same.

Time-domain global similarity method for automatic data cleaning for multi-channel measurement systems in magnetic confinement fusion devices

To guarantee the availability and reliability of data source in Magnetic Confinement Fusion (MCF) devices, incorrect diagnostic data, which cannot reflect real physical properties of measured objects, should be sorted out before further analysis and study. Traditional data sorting cannot meet the growing demand of MCF research because of the low-efficiency, time-delay, and lack of objective criteria. In this paper, a Time-Domain Global Similarity (TDGS) method based on machine learning technologies is proposed for the automatic data cleaning of MCF devices. Traditional data sorting aims to the classification of original diagnostic data sequences, which are different in both length and evolution properties under various discharge parameters. Hence the classification criteria are affected by many discharge parameters and vary shot by shot. The focus of TDGS method is turned to the physical similarity between data sequences from different channels, which are more essential and independent of discharge parameters. The complexity arisen from real discharge parameters during data cleaning is avoided in the TDGS method by transforming the general data sorting problem into a binary classification problem about the physical similarity between data sequences. As a demonstration of its application to multi-channel measurement systems, the TDGS method is applied to the EAST POlarimeter-INterferomeTer (POINT) system. The optimized performance of the method has reached 0.9871.

Canonical symplectic structure and structure-preserving geometric algorithms for Schrödinger-Maxwell systems

An infinite dimensional canonical symplectic structure and structure-preserving geometric algorithms are developed for the photon-matter interactions described by the Schrödinger-Maxwell equations. The algorithms preserve the symplectic structure of the system and the unitary nature of the wavefunctions, and bound the energy error of the simulation for all time-steps. This new numerical capability enables us to carry out first-principle based simulation study of important photon-matter interactions, such as the high harmonic generation and stabilization of ionization, with long-term accuracy and fidelity.

Tuning Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy by Oxygen Octahedral Rotations in (La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$)/(SrIrO$_{3}$) Superlattices

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) plays a critical role in the development of spintronics, thereby demanding new strategies to control PMA. Here we demonstrate a conceptually new type of interface induced PMA that is controlled by oxygen octahedral rotation. In superlattices comprised of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ and SrIrO$_{3}$, we find that all superlattices (0$\leq$x$\leq$1) exhibit ferromagnetism despite the fact that La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ is antiferromagnetic for x$>$0.5. PMA as high as 4$\times$10$^6$ erg/cm$^3$ is observed by increasing x and attributed to a decrease of oxygen octahedral rotation at interfaces. We also demonstrate that oxygen octahedral deformation cannot explain the trend in PMA. These results reveal a new degree of freedom to control PMA, enabling discovery of emergent magnetic textures and topological phenomena.

Magnetism in artificial Ruddlesden-Popper iridates leveraged by structural distortions

We report on the tuning of magnetic interactions in superlattices composed of single and bilayer SrIrO$_3$ inter-spaced with SrTiO$_3$. Magnetic scattering shows predominately $c$-axis antiferromagnetic orientation of the magnetic moments for the bilayer justifying these systems as viable artificial analogues of the bulk Ruddlesden-Popper series iridates. Magnon gaps are observed in both superlattices, with the magnitude of the gap in the bilayer being reduced to nearly half that in its bulk structural analogue, Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. We assign this to modifications in the anisotropic exchange driven by bending of the $c$-axis Ir-O-Ir bond and subsequent local environment changes, as detected by x-ray diffraction and modeled using spin wave theory. These findings explain how even subtle structural modulations driven by heterostructuring in iridates are leveraged by spin orbit coupling to drive large changes in the magnetic interactions.

A unified thermostat scheme for efficient configurational sampling for classical/quantum canonical ensembles via molecular dynamics

We show a unified second-order scheme for constructing simple, robust and accurate algorithms for typical thermostats for configurational sampling for the canonical ensemble. When Langevin dynamics is used, the scheme leads to the BAOAB algorithm that has been recently investigated. We show that the scheme is also useful for other types of thermostat, such as the Andersen thermostat and Nosé-Hoover chain. Two 1-dimensional models and three typical realistic molecular systems that range from the gas phase, clusters, to the condensed phase are used in numerical examples for demonstration. Accuracy may be increased by an order of magnitude for estimating coordinate-dependent properties in molecular dynamics (when the same time interval is used), irrespective of which type of thermostat is applied. The scheme is especially useful for path integral molecular dynamics, because it consistently improves the efficiency for evaluating all thermodynamic properties for any type of thermostat.

Spin-accumulation capacitance and its application to magnetoimpedance

It has been known that spin-dependent capacitances usually coexist with geometric capacitances in a magnetic multilayer. However, the charge and energy storage of the capacitance due to spin accumulation has not been fully understood. Here, we resolve this problem starting from the charge storage in the spin degree of freedom: spin accumulation manifests itself as an excess of electrons in one spin channel and an equal deficiency in the other under the quasi-neutrality condition. This enables us to model the two spin channels as the two plates of a capacitor. Taking a ferromagnet/nonmagnet junction as an example and using a method similar to that for treating quantum capacitance, we find that a spin-accumulation (SA) capacitance can be introduced for each layer to measure its ability to store spins. A spatial charge storage is not essential for the SA capacitor and the energy stored in it is the splitting energy of the spin-dependent chemical potentials instead of the electrostatic energy. The SA capacitance is essentially a quantum capacitance due to spin accumulation on the scale of the spin-diffusion length. The SA capacitances can be used to reinterpret the imaginary part of the low-frequency magnetoimpedance.

Improvement of training set structure in fusion data cleaning using Time-Domain Global Similarity method

Traditional data cleaning identifies dirty data by classifying original data sequences, which is a class$-$imbalanced problem since the proportion of incorrect data is much less than the proportion of correct ones for most diagnostic systems in Magnetic Confinement Fusion (MCF) devices. When using machine learning algorithms to classify diagnostic data based on class$-$imbalanced training set, most classifiers are biased towards the major class and show very poor classification rates on the minor class. By transforming the direct classification problem about original data sequences into a classification problem about the physical similarity between data sequences, the class$-$balanced effect of Time$-$Domain Global Similarity (TDGS) method on training set structure is investigated in this paper. Meanwhile, the impact of improved training set structure on data cleaning performance of TDGS method is demonstrated with an application example in EAST POlarimetry$-$INTerferometry (POINT) system.

Observation of topological edge states of sound at a momentum away from the high-symmetry point

Topologically protected one-way transportation of sound, mimicking the topological properties of the condensed matter, has received greatly attentions. Thus far, the topological phases and the topological edge states of sound are yielded in the vicinity of the Dirac cones fixed at the high symmetric points of the Brillouin zone. Here, we present a new type of the phononic topological insulator in the square lattice with position-variational Dirac cones along the high symmetric lines. The emergence of such Dirac cones, characterized by the vortex structure in a momentum space, is attributed to the unavoidable band crossing protected by the mirror symmetry. By rotating the square columns, these Dirac points are lifted and a complete band gap is induced because of the mirror-symmetry-breaking. Along the topological domain wall between the phononic crystals (PhCs) with the distinct topological phases stemming from the mirror symmetry inversion, we obtain a topological edge state for the neutral scalar sound which is absence of the intrinsic polarization and is uncoupled from an external field. Within a wide rotational range of the square column, the topological edge state in our PhCs evolves from a gapless one into a gapped one with a robust edge transport against cavities and disorders. Our excellent results are promising for the exploration of the new topological phenomena in the PhCs beyond the hexagonal lattices. Furthermore, the flexibility of the rotational square columns provides an interesting platform for the design of tunable topological acoustic devices.

Spectral and Energy Efficiency of Multi-pair Massive MIMO Relay Network with Hybrid Processing

We consider a multi-pair massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay network, where the relay is equipped with a large number, N, of antennas, but driven by a far smaller number, L, of radio frequency (RF) chains. We assume that K pairs of users are scheduled for simultaneous transmission, where K satisfies 2K = L. A hybrid signal processing scheme is presented for both uplink and downlink transmissions of the network. Analytical expressions of both spectral and energy efficiency are derived with respect to the RF chain number under imperfect channel estimation. It is revealed that, under the condition N > 4L^2/pi, the transmit power of each user and the relay can be respectively scaled down by 1=sqrt(N) and 2K=sqrt(N) if pilot power scales with signal power, or they can be respectively scaled down by 1=N and 2K=N if the pilot power is kept fixed, while maintaining an asymptotically unchanged spectral efficiency (SE). While regarding energy efficiency (EE) of the network, the optimal EE is shown to be achieved when Pr = 2KPs, where Pr and Ps respectively refer to the transmit power of the relay and each source terminal. We show that the network EE is a quasi-concave function with respect to the number of RF-chains which, therefore, admits a unique globally optimal choice of the RF-chain number. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify our observations.

The thermodynamic relationship between the RN-AdS black holes and the RN black hole in canonical ensemble

In this paper, by analyzing the thermodynamic properties of charged AdS black hole and asymptotically flat space-time charged black hole in the vicinity of the critical point, we establish the correspondence between the thermodynamic parameters of asymptotically flat space-time and nonasymptotically flat space-time, based on the equality of black hole horizon area in the two different space-time. The relationship between the cavity radius (which is introduced in the study of asymptotically flat space-time charged black holes) and the cosmological constant (which is introduced in the study of nonasymptotically flat space-time) is determined. The establishment of the correspondence between the thermodynamics parameters in two different space-time is beneficial to the mutual promotion of different time-space black hole research, which is helpful to understand the thermodynamics and quantumproperties of black hole in space-time.

Photoinduced coherent acoustic phonon dynamics inside Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 films observed by femtosecond X-ray pulses

We investigate the transient photoexcited lattice dynamics in a layered perovskite Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 by femtosecond X-ray diffraction using a laser plasma-based X-ray source. Ultrafast structural dynamics of Sr2IrO4 thin films are determined by observing the shift and broadening of the (0012) Bragg diffraction after excitation by 1.5 eV and 3.0 eV pump photons for films with different thicknesses. The observed transient lattice response can be well interpreted as a distinct three-step dynamics due to the propagation of coherent acoustic phonons generated by the photoinduced quasiparticles (QP). Employing a normalized phonon propagation model, we found that the photoinduced angular shifts of the Bragg peak collapse into a universal curve after introducing a normalized coordinates to account for different thicknesses and pump photon energies, pinpointing the origin of the lattice distortion and its early evolution. In addition, a transient photocurrent measurement indicates that the photoinduced QPs are charge neutral excitons. Mapping the phonon propagation and correlating its dynamics with the QP by ultrafast X-ray diffraction (UXRD) establish a powerful way to study electron-phonon coupling and uncover the exotic physics in strongly correlated systems under nonequilibrium conditions.

Superconducting transition of FeSe/SrTiO3 induced by adsorption of semiconducting organic molecules

We prepared superconducting and non-superconducting FeSe films on SrTiO3(001) substrates (FeSe/STO) and investigated the superconducting transition induced by charge transfer between organic molecules and FeSe layers by low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. At low coverage, donor- and acceptor-type molecules adsorbed preferentially on the non-superconducting and superconducting FeSe layers, respectively. Superconductivity was induced by donor molecules on non-superconducting FeSe layer, while the superconductivity was suppressed near acceptor molecules. The corresponding evolutions of electronic states and work function were also resolved by scanning tunneling microscopy. These results illustrate the important role played by local electron concentration in the superconducting transition of FeSe/STO.
