The Circle Game: Scalable Private Membership Test Using Trusted Hardware

Malware checking is changing from being a local service to a cloud-assisted one where users' devices query a cloud server, which hosts a dictionary of malware signatures, to check if particular applications are potentially malware. Whilst such an architecture gains all the benefits of cloud-based services, it opens up a major privacy concern since the cloud service can infer personal traits of the users based on the lists of applications queried by their devices. Private membership test (PMT) schemes can remove this privacy concern. However, known PMT schemes do not scale well to a large number of simultaneous users and high query arrival rates. We propose a simple PMT approach using a carousel: circling the entire dictionary through trusted hardware on the cloud server. Users communicate with the trusted hardware via secure channels. We show how the carousel approach, using different data structures to represent the dictionary, can be realized on two different commercial hardware security architectures (ARM TrustZone and Intel SGX). We highlight subtle aspects of securely implementing seemingly simple PMT schemes on these architectures. Through extensive experimental analysis, we show that for the malware checking scenario our carousel approach surprisingly outperforms Path ORAM on the same hardware by supporting a much higher query arrival rate while guaranteeing acceptable response latency for individual queries.

VMDV: A 3D Visualization Tool for Modeling, Demonstration, and Verification

The output of an automated theorem prover is usually presented by using a text format, they are often too heavy to be understood. In model checking setting, it would be helpful if one can observe the structure of models and the verification procedures. A 3D visualization tool (\textsf{VMDV}) is proposed in this paper to address these problems. The facility of \vmdv is illustrated by applying it to a proof systems.

Exploring the Brown Dwarf Desert: New Substellar Companions from the SDSS-III MARVELS Survey

Planet searches using the radial velocity technique show a paucity of companions to solar-type stars within ~5 AU in the mass range of ~10 - 80 M$_{\text{Jup}}$. This deficit, known as the brown dwarf desert, currently has no conclusive explanation. New substellar companions in this region help asses the reality of the desert and provide insight to the formation and evolution of these objects. Here we present 10 new brown dwarf and two low-mass stellar companion candidates around solar-type stars from the Multi-object APO Radial-Velocity Exoplanet Large-Area Survey (MARVELS) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III). These companions were selected from processed MARVELS data using the latest University of Florida Two Dimensional (UF2D) pipeline, which shows significant improvement and reduction of systematic errors over previous pipelines. The 10 brown dwarf companions range in mass from ~13 to 76 M$_{\text{Jup}}$ and have orbital radii of less than 1 AU. The two stellar companions have minimum masses of ~98 and 100 M$_{\text{Jup}}$. The host stars of the MARVELS brown dwarf sample have a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = 0.03 $\pm$ 0.08 dex. Given our stellar sample we estimate the brown dwarf occurrence rate around solar-type stars with periods less than ~300 days to be ~0.56%.

Topological phononic insulator with robustly pseudospin-dependent transport

Topological phononic states, facilitating acoustic unique transports immunizing to defects and disorders, have significantly revolutionized our scientific cognition of acoustic wave systems. Up to now, the theoretical and experimental demonstrations of topologically protected one-way transports with pseudospin states in a phononic crystal beyond the graphene lattice with C6v symmetry are still unexploited. Furthermore, the tunable topological states, in form of robust reconfigurable acoustic pathways, have been evaded in the topological phononic insulators. Here, we realize a topological phase transition in the double Dirac degenerate cone of rotatable triangular phononic crystals with C3v symmetry, by introducing the zone folding mechanism. Along a topological domain wall between two portions of phononic crystals with distinct topological phases, we experimentally observe the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect for sound, characterized by the robust pseudospin-dependent one-way edge model. As the triangular phononic crystals can freely rotate, we straightforward reconfigure an arbitrary contour defined by the topological domain wall along which the acoustic waves can unimpededly transport. Our research develops a new route for the exploration of the topological phenomena in experiments and provides an excellent framework for freely steering the acoustic immune-backscattering propagation within topological phononic structures.

Local Energy Conservation Law for Spatially-Discretized Hamiltonian Vlasov-Maxwell System

Structure-preserving geometric algorithm for the Vlasov-Maxwell (VM) equations is currently an active research topic. We show that spatially-discretized Hamiltonian systems for the VM equations admit a local energy conservation law in space-time. This is accomplished by proving that for a general spatially-discretized system, a global conservation law always implies a discrete local conservation law in space-time when the algorithm is local. This general result demonstrates that Hamiltonian discretizations can preserve local conservation laws, in addition to the symplectic structure, both of which are the intrinsic physical properties of infinite dimensional Hamiltonian systems in physics.

Characterization of Fully Depleted CMOS Active Pixel Sensors on High Resistivity Substrates for Use in a High Radiation Environment

Depleted CMOS active sensors (DMAPS) are being developed for high-energy particle physics experiments in high radiation environments, such as in the ATLAS High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). Since charge collection by drift is mandatory for harsh radiation environment, the application of high bias voltage to high resistive sensor material is needed. In this work, a prototype of a DMAPS was fabricated in a 150nm CMOS process on a substrate with a resistivity of >2 kΩcm that was thinned to 100 μm. Full depletion occurs around 20V, which is far below the breakdown voltage of 110 V. A readout chip has been attached for fast triggered readout. Presented prototype also uses a concept of sub-pixel en/decoding three pixels of the prototype chip are readout by one pixel of the readout chip. Since radiation tolerance is one of the largest concerns in DMAPS, the CCPD_LF chip has been irradiated with X-rays and neutrons up to a total ionization dose of 50 Mrad and a fluence of 10E15neq/cm2, respectively.

Towards Fairness of Cryptocurrency Payments

Motivated by the great success and adoption of Bitcoin, a number of cryptocurrencies such as Litecoin, Dogecoin, and Ethereum are becoming increasingly popular. Although existing blockchain-based cryptocurrency schemes can ensure reasonable security for transactions, they do not consider any notion of fairness. Fair exchange allows two players to exchange digital "items", such as digital signatures, over insecure networks fairly, so that either each player gets the other's item, or neither player does. Given that blockchain participants typically do not trust each other, enabling fairness in existing cryptocurrencies is an essential but insufficiently explored problem. In this paper, we explore the solution space for enabling the fair exchange of a cryptocurrency payment for a receipt. We identify the timeliness of an exchange as an important property especially when one of the parties involved in the exchange is resource-constrained. We introduce the notion of strong timeliness for a fair exchange protocol and propose two fair payment-for-receipt protocol instantiations that leverage functionality of the blockchain to achieve strong timeliness. We implement both and compare their security and efficiency.

First Demonstration of Electrostatic Damping of Parametric Instability at Advanced LIGO

Interferometric gravitational wave detectors operate with high optical power in their arms in order to achieve high shot-noise limited strain sensitivity. A significant limitation to increasing the optical power is the phenomenon of three-mode parametric instabilities, in which the laser field in the arm cavities is scattered into higher order optical modes by acoustic modes of the cavity mirrors. The optical modes can further drive the acoustic modes via radiation pressure, potentially producing an exponential buildup. One proposed technique to stabilize parametric instability is active damping of acoustic modes. We report here the first demonstration of damping a parametrically unstable mode using active feedback forces on the cavity mirror. A 15,538 Hz mode that grew exponentially with a time constant of 182 sec was damped using electro-static actuation, with a resulting decay time constant of 23 sec. An average control force of 0.03 nNrms was required to maintain the acoustic mode at its minimum amplitude.

A Unified Theoretical Framework for Mapping Models for the Multi-State Hamiltonian

We propose a new unified theoretical framework to construct equivalent representations of the multi-state Hamiltonian operator and present several approaches for the mapping onto the Cartesian phase space. After mapping an F-dimensional Hamiltonian onto an F+1- dimensional space, creation and annihilation operators are defined such that the F+1 dimensional space is complete for any combined excitations. Commutation and anti-commutation relations are then naturally derived, which show that the underlying degrees of freedom are neither bosons nor fermions. This sets the scene for developing equivalent expressions of the Hamiltonian operator in quantum mechanics and their classical/semiclassical counterparts. Six mapping models are presented as examples. The framework also offers a novel way to derive such as the well-known Meyer-Miller model.

Isomorphism between the multi-state Hamiltonian and the second-quantized many-electron Hamiltonian with only 1-electron interactions

We introduce the isomorphism between the multi-state Hamiltonian and the second-quantized many-electron Hamiltonian (with only 1-electron interactions). This suggests that all methods developed for the former can be employed for the latter, and vice versa. The resonant level (Landauer) model for nonequilibrium quantum transport is used as a proof-of-concept example. Such as the classical mapping models for the multi-state Hamiltonian proposed in our previous work [J. Chem. Phys. (submitted)] lead to exact results for this model problem. We further demonstrate how these methods can also be applied to the second-quantized many-electron Hamiltonian even when 2-electron interactions are included.

A simple and accurate algorithm for path integral molecular dynamics with the Langevin thermostat

We introduce a novel simple algorithm for thermostatting path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) with the Langevin equation. The staging transformation of path integral beads is employed for demonstration. The optimum friction coefficients for the staging modes in the free particle limit are used for all systems. In comparison to the path integral Langevin equation (PILE) thermostat, the new algorithm exploits a different order of splitting for the phase space propagator associated to the Langevin equation. While the error analysis is made for both algorithms, they are also employed in the PIMD simulations of three realistic systems (the H2O molecule, liquid para-hydrogen, and liquid water) for comparison. It is shown that the new thermostat increases the time interval of PIMD by a factor of 4~6 or more for achieving the same accuracy. In addition, supplemental material shows the error analysis made for the algorithms when the normal-mode transformation of path integral beads is used.

Largest Particle Simulations Downgrade the Runaway Electron Risk for ITER

Fusion energy will be the ultimate clean energy source for mankind. One of the most visible concerns of the future fusion device is the threat of deleterious runaway electrons (REs) produced during unexpected disruptions of the fusion plasma. Both efficient long-term algorithms and super-large scale computing power are necessary to reveal the complex dynamics of REs in a realistic fusion reactor. In the present study, we deploy the world's fastest supercomputer, Sunway TaihuLight, and the newly developed relativistic volume-preserving algorithm to carry out long-term particle simulations of 10^7 sampled REs in 6D phase space, which involves simulation scale of 10^18 particle-steps, the largest ever achieved in fusion research. Our simulations show that in a realistic fusion reactor, the concern of REs is not as serious as previously thought. Specifically, REs are confined much better than previously predicted and the maximum average energy is in the range of 150MeV, less than half of previous estimate.

Context-aware System Service Call-oriented Symbolic Execution of Android Framework with Application to Exploit Generation

Android Framework is a layer of software that exists in every Android system managing resources of all Android apps. A vulnerability in Android Framework can lead to severe hacks, such as destroying user data and leaking private information. With tens of millions of Android devices unpatched due to Android fragmentation, vulnerabilities in Android Framework certainly attract attackers to exploit them. So far, enormous manual effort is needed to craft such exploits. To our knowledge, no research has been done on automatic generation of exploits that take advantage of Android Framework vulnerabilities. We make a first step towards this goal by applying symbolic execution of Android Framework to finding bugs and generating exploits. Several challenges have been raised by the task. (1) The information of an app flows to Android Framework in multiple intricate steps, making it difficult to identify symbolic inputs. (2) Android Framework has a complex initialization phase, which exacerbates the state space explosion problem. (3) A straightforward design that builds the symbolic executor as a layer inside the Android system will not work well: not only does the implementation have to ensure the compatibility with the Android system, but it needs to be maintained whenever Android gets updated. We present novel ideas and techniques to resolve the challenges, and have built the first system for symbolic execution of Android Framework. It fundamentally changes the state of the art in exploit generation on the Android system, and has been applied to constructing new techniques for finding vulnerabilities.

Explicit symplectic algorithms based on generating functions for relativistic charged particle dynamics in time-dependent electromagnetic field

Relativistic dynamics of a charged particle in time-dependent electromagnetic fields has theoretical significance and a wide range of applications. It is often multi-scale and requires accurate long-term numerical simulations using symplectic integrators. For modern large-scale particle simulations in complex, time-dependent electromagnetic field, explicit symplectic algorithms are much more preferable. In this paper, we treat the relativistic dynamics of a particle as a Hamiltonian system on the cotangent space of the space-time, and construct for the first time explicit symplectic algorithms for relativistic charged particles of order 2 and 3 using the sum-split technique and generating functions.

Lorentz Covariant Canonical Symplectic Algorithms for Dynamics of Charged Particles

In this paper, the Lorentz covariance of algorithms is introduced. Under Lorentz transformation, both the form and performance of a Lorentz covariant algorithm are invariant. To acquire the advantages of symplectic algorithms and Lorentz covariance, a general procedure for constructing Lorentz covariant canonical symplectic algorithms (LCCSA) is provided, based on which an explicit LCCSA for dynamics of relativistic charged particles is built. LCCSA possesses Lorentz invariance as well as long-term numerical accuracy and stability, due to the preservation of discrete symplectic structure and Lorentz symmetry of the system. For situations with time-dependent electromagnetic fields, which is difficult to handle in traditional construction procedures of symplectic algorithms, LCCSA provides a perfect explicit canonical symplectic solution by implementing the discretization in 4-spacetime. We also show that LCCSA has built-in energy-based adaptive time steps, which can optimize the computation performance when the Lorentz factor varies.

Emerging magnetism and anomalous Hall effect in iridate-manganite heterostructures

Strong Coulomb repulsion and spin-orbit coupling are known to give rise to exotic physical phenomena in transition metal oxides. Initial attempts to investigate systems where both of these fundamental interactions are comparably strong, such as 3d and 5d complex oxide superlattices, have revealed properties that only slightly differ from the bulk ones of the constituent materials. Here, we observe that the interfacial coupling between the 3d antiferromagnetic insulator SrMnO3 and the 5d paramagnetic metal SrIrO3 is enormously strong, yielding an anomalous Hall response as the result of charge transfer driven interfacial ferromagnetism. These findings show that low dimensional spin-orbit entangled 3d-5d interfaces provide an avenue to uncover technologically relevant physical phenomena unattainable in bulk materials.

Superconductor to Mott insulator transition in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$/LaCaMnO$_3$ heterostructures

The superconductor-to-insulator transition (SIT) induced by means such as external magnetic fields, disorder or spatial confinement is a vivid illustration of a quantum phase transition dramatically affecting the superconducting order parameter. In pursuit of a new realization of the SIT by interfacial charge transfer, we developed extremely thin superlattices composed of high $T_c$ superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) and colossal magnetoresistance ferromagnet La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO). By using linearly polarized resonant X-ray absorption spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism, combined with hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we derived a complete picture of the interfacial carrier doping in cuprate and manganite atomic layers, leading to the transition from superconducting to an unusual Mott insulating state emerging with the increase of LCMO layer thickness. In addition, contrary to the common perception that only transition metal ions may response to the charge transfer process, we found that charge is also actively compensated by rare-earth and alkaline-earth metal ions of the interface. Such deterministic control of $T_c$ by pure electronic doping without any hindering effects of chemical substitution is another promising route to disentangle the role of disorder on the pseudo-gap and charge density wave phases of underdoped cuprates.

Photons, phonons, and plasmons with orbital angular momentum in plasmas

Exact eigen modes with orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the complex media of unmagnetized homogeneous plasma are studied. Three exact eigen modes with OAM are discovered, i.e., photons, phonons, and plasmons. It is found that an OAM photon can be excited by two familiar Bessel modes without OAM. For the phonons and plasmons, their OAM are carried by the electrons and ions. The OAM modes in plasmas and their characteristics can be explored for various potential applications in plasma physics and accelerator physics.
