Collective Pinning and Vortex Dynamics in type 2 superconducting thin films with Varying Magnetic Field

A perpendicular magnetic field penetrating a thin type-II superconductor slab produces vortices, with one vortex per flux quantum, h/2e. The vortices interact repulsively and form an ordered array (Abrikosov lattice) in clean systems, while strong disorder changes the lattice into a vortex glass. Here we investigate type-II superconducting films (PdBi2 and NbSe2) with surface acoustic waves (SAWs) at mK temperature. When sweeping the magnetic field at an extremely slow rate, we observe a series of spikes in the attenuation and velocity of the SAW, on average separated in field by approximately Hc1. We suspect the following scenario: The vortex-free region at the edges of the film produces an edge barrier across which the vortices can enter or leave. When the applied field changes, the induced supercurrents flowing along this edge region lowers this barrier until there is an instability. At that point, vortices avalanche into (or out of) the bulk and change the vortex crystal, suggested by the sharp jump in each such spike. The vortices then gradually relax to a new stable pinned configuration, leading to a ~30s relaxation after the jump. Our observation enriches the limited experimental evidence on the important topic of real-time vortex dynamics in superconductors.

Probing disorder-induced time-reversal symmetry breaking in Josephson junctions

The relation between superconductivity and time-reversal symmetry (TRS) is one of the most fascinating problems in condensed matter physics. Although most superconductors inherently possess TRS, nonmagnetic disorder can induce states that demonstrate the breaking of this symmetry. Yet, the identification of experimental signatures of superconductivity with broken TRS remains a challenge. Here, we fabricate vertical Josephson junctions using metallic superconductor (Al) and ion bombarded Sr2RuO4 to study disorder-driven TRS breaking effects. We observe persistent magnetoresistive hysteresis behavior dependent on the disorder deposition time that provides evidence of TRS breaking below the superconducting transition temperature. Field and temperature dependent measurements suggest that the observed effects arise from disorder-induced anomalous flux in Sr2RuO4 which can be sensitively detected by superconducting Al. Our experimental results can be accounted within a physical framework of disorder-induced reconstruction of the superconducting order parameter as described within a multiband Ginzburg-Landau approach.

Giant domain wall anomalous Hall effect in an antiferromagnet

Generally, the dissipationless Hall effect in solids requires time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB), where TRSB induced by external magnetic field results in ordinary Hall effect, while TRSB caused by spontaneous magnetization gives rise to anomalous Hall effect (AHE) which scales with the net magnetization. The AHE is therefore not expected in antiferromagnets with vanishing small magnetization. However, large AHE was recently observed in certain antiferromagnets with noncolinear spin structure and nonvanishing Berry curvature. Here, we report another origin of AHE in a layered antiferromagnet EuAl2Si2, namely the domain wall (DW) skew scattering with Weyl points near the Fermi level, in experiments for the first time. Interestingly, the DWs form a unique periodic stripe structure with controllable periodicity by external magnetic field, which decreases nearly monotonically from 975 nm at 0 T to 232 nm at 4 T. Electrons incident on DW with topological bound states experience strong asymmetric scattering, leading to a giant AHE, with the DW Hall conductivity (DWHC) at 2 K and 1.2 T reaching a record value of ~ 1,5100 S cm-1 among bulk systems and being two orders of magnitude larger than the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity. The observation not only sets a new paradigm for exploration of large anomalous Hall effect, but also provides potential applications in spintronic devices.

Azimuthal imaging of rock fractures by incorporating single borehole radar and optical data

Single borehole radar detection suffers from azimuthal ambiguity, while borehole optical tests only provide information about the borehole wall. These limitations prevent either detection method from revealing the complete spatial patterns of rock fractures on their own. In this paper, we address these challenges by proposing a joint imaging method that combines the advantages of both borehole detection methods. Geological azimuthal parameters are extracted from optical images by fitting the fracture curves to sinusoidal functions. A 2D Kirchhoff time migration is then implemented using radar common offset gather. Up-dip and down-dip events are separated by the f-k transform or z-s transform, depending on their geometric relation. The complete fracture planes, including trend, dip angle, gap width, and extension length, are finally reconstructed in 3D space by mapping the migration profile using azimuthal information from optical images. The method is proven reliable and high-resolution through both numerical tests and real field data.

Resolving and routing the magnetic polymorphs in 2D layered antiferromagnet

Polymorphism, commonly denoting the variety of molecular or crystal structures, is a vital element in many natural science disciplines. In van der Waals layered antiferromagnets, a new type of magnetic polymorphism is allowed by having multiple layer-selective magnetic structures with the same total magnetization. However, resolving and manipulating such magnetic polymorphs remain a great challenge. Here we use the phase-resolved magnetic second-harmonic generation microscopy to elucidate such magnetic polymorphism in the 2D semiconducting layered antiferromagnet chromium sulfur bromide (CrSBr), and demonstrate how the magnetic polymorphs can be deterministically switched in an unprecedented layer-selective manner. With the nonlinear magneto-optical technique unveiling the magnetic symmetry information through the amplitude and phase of light, we could unambiguously resolve the polymorphic spin-flip transitions in CrSBr bilayers and tetralayers. Remarkably, the deterministic routing of polymorphic transitions originates from the breaking of energy degeneracy via a magnetic layer-sharing effect: the spin-flip transitions in a tetralayer are governed by the laterally extended bilayer, which acts as a control bit. We envision such controllable magnetic polymorphism to be ubiquitous for van der Waals layered antiferromagnets, and could lead to conceptually new design and construction of spintronic and opto-spintronic devices for probabilistic computation and neuromorphic engineering.

Physical Neural Networks with Self-Learning Capabilities

Physical neural networks are artificial neural networks that mimic synapses and neurons using physical systems or materials. These networks harness the distinctive characteristics of physical systems to carry out computations effectively, potentially surpassing the constraints of conventional digital neural networks. A recent advancement known as ``physical self-learning'' aims to achieve learning through intrinsic physical processes rather than relying on external computations. This article offers a comprehensive review of the progress made in implementing physical self-learning across various physical systems. Prevailing learning strategies are discussed that contribute to the realization of physical self-learning. Despite challenges in understanding fundamental mechanism of learning, this work highlights the progress towards constructing intelligent hardware from the ground up, incorporating embedded self-organizing and self-adaptive dynamics in physical systems.

Acousto-drag photovoltaic effect by piezoelectric integration of two-dimensional semiconductors

Light-to-electricity conversion is crucial for energy harvesting and photodetection, requesting efficient electron-hole pair separation to prevent recombination. Traditional junction-based mechanisms using built-in electric fields fail in non-barrier regions. Homogeneous material harvesting under photovoltaic effect is appealing but only realized in non-centrosymmetric systems via bulk photovoltaic effect. Here we report the realization of photovoltaic effect by employing surface acoustic waves (SAW) to generate zero-bias photocurrent in a conventional layered semiconductor MoSe2. SAW induces periodic modulation to electronic bands and drags the photoexcited pairs toward the travelling direction. The photocurrent is extracted by a local barrier. The separation of generation and extraction processes suppresses recombination and yields large nonlocal photoresponse. We distinguish acousto-electric drag and electron-hole pair separation effect by fabricating devices of different configurations. The acousto-drag photovoltaic effect, enabled by piezoelectric integration, offers an efficient light-to-electricity conversion method, independent of semiconductor crystal symmetry.

Efficient Bi-manipulation using RGBD Multi-model Fusion based on Attention Mechanism

Dual-arm robots have great application prospects in intelligent manufacturing due to their human-like structure when deployed with advanced intelligence algorithm. However, the previous visuomotor policy suffers from perception deficiencies in environments where features of images are impaired by the various conditions, such as abnormal lighting, occlusion and shadow etc. The Focal CVAE framework is proposed for RGB-D multi-modal data fusion to address this challenge. In this study, a mixed focal attention module is designed for the fusion of RGB images containing color features and depth images containing 3D shape and structure information. This module highlights the prominent local features and focuses on the relevance of RGB and depth via cross-attention. A saliency attention module is proposed to improve its computational efficiency, which is applied in the encoder and the decoder of the framework. We illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method via extensive simulation and experiments. It's shown that the performances of bi-manipulation are all significantly improved in the four real-world tasks with lower computational cost. Besides, the robustness is validated through experiments under different scenarios where there is a perception deficiency problem, demonstrating the feasibility of the method.

Angle-Resolved Magneto-Chiral Anisotropy in a Non-Centrosymmetric Atomic Layer Superlattice

Chirality in solid-state materials has sparked significant interest due to potential applications of topologically-protected chiral states in next-generation information technology. The electrical magneto-chiral effect (eMChE), arising from relativistic spin-orbit interactions, shows great promise for developing chiral materials and devices for electronic integration. Here we demonstrate an angle-resolved eMChE in an A-B-C-C type atomic-layer superlattice lacking time and space inversion symmetry. We observe non-superimposable enantiomers of left-handed and right-handed tilted uniaxial magnetic anisotropy as the sample rotates under static fields, with the tilting angle reaching a striking 45 degree. Magnetic force microscopy and atomistic simulations correlate the tilt to the emergence and evolution of chiral spin textures. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction lock effect in competition with Zeeman effect is demonstrated to be responsible for the angle-resolved eMChE. Our findings open up a new horizon for engineering angle-resolved magneto-chiral anisotropy, shedding light on the development of novel angle-resolved sensing or writing techniques in chiral spintronics.

Fractal Gripper: Adaptive manipulator with mode switching

Although the multi-jointed underactuated manipulator is highly dexterous, its grasping capacity does not match that of the parallel jaw gripper. This work introduces a fractal gripper to enhance the grasping capacity of multi-joint underactuated manipulators, preserving their passive clamping features. We describe in detail the working principle and manufacturing process of the fractal gripper. This work, inspired by the 'Fractal Vise' structure, resulted in the invention of a fractal gripper with mode switching capabilities. The fractal gripper inherits the inherent adaptive properties of the fractal structure and realizes the self-resetting function by integrating spring into the original design, thereby enhancing the efficiency of object grasping tasks. The fractal gripper prevents object damage by distributing pressure evenly and applying it at multiple points through its fractal structure during closure. Objects of various shapes are effectively grasped by the fractal gripper, which ensures a safe and secure grasp. The superior performance was provided by the force distribution characteristics of the fractal gripper. By applying the flexible polymer PDMS, which possesses superior elasticity, to the fractal structure's wrapping surface, potential scratching during grasping is effectively prevented, thus protecting the object's geometric surface. Grab experiments with objects of diverse shapes and sizes confirm fractal gripper multi-scale adaptability and superior grasping stability.

Correlation between magnetic domain structures and quantum anomalous Hall effect in epitaxial MnBi2Te4 thin films

We use magnetic force microscopy (MFM) to study spatial uniformity of magnetization of epitaxially grown MnBi2Te4 thin films. Compared to films which exhibit no quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAH), films with QAH are observed to have more spatial uniformity of magnetization with larger domain size. The domain evolution upon magnetic field sweeping indicates that the magnetic domains or the spatial nonuniformity of magnetization originates from the strong pinning of the inherent sample inhomogeneity. A direct correlation between the Hall resistivity and the domain size has been established by analyzing a series of thin films with and without QAH. Our observation shows that one has to suppress the spatial nonuniformity of magnetization to allow the Hall resistivity to be quantized. The fact that a sizable longitudinal resistivity remains even for the QAH sample suggests a quantized Hall insulator scenario. Our work provides important insights to the understanding of the quantization mechanism and the dissipation of the QAH state in MnBi2Te4 system.

Reentrant quantum anomalous Hall effect in molecular beam epitaxy-grown MnBi2Te4 thin films

In this study, we investigate intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We observe a reentrant quantum anomalous Hall effect when the Fermi energy enters the valance band and magnetic field equals zero, indicating the emergence of the Chern Anderson insulator state. The discovery opens a new avenue for realizing the QAH effect and underscores the fundamental role of both Berry curvature and Anderson localization.

Large nonlinear Hall effect and Berry curvature in KTaO3 based two-dimensional electron gas

The two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at oxide interfaces exhibits various exotic properties stemming from interfacial inversion symmetry breaking. In this work, we report the emergence of large nonlinear Hall effects (NHE) in the LaAlO3/KTaO3(111) interface 2DEG under zero magnetic field. Skew scattering was identified as the dominant origin based on the cubic scaling of nonlinear Hall conductivity with longitudinal conductivity and the threefold symmetry. Moreover, a gate-tunable NHE with pronounced peak and dip was observed and reproduced by our theoretical calculation. These results indicate the presence of Berry curvature hotspots and thus a large Berry curvature triple at the oxide interface. Our theoretical calculations confirm the existence of large Berry curvatures from the avoided crossing of multiple 5d-orbit bands, orders of magnitude larger than that in transition-metal dichalcogenides. NHE offers a new pathway to probe the Berry curvature at oxide interfaces, and facilitates new applications in oxide nonlinear electronics.

Direct observation of chiral edge current at zero magnetic field in odd-layer MnBi$_2$Te$_4$

The chiral edge current is the boundary manifestation of the Chern number of a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator. Its direct observation is assumed to require well-quantized Hall conductance, and is so far lacking. The recently discovered van der Waals antiferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is theorized as a QAH in odd-layers but has shown Hall resistivity below the quantization value at zero magnetic field. Here, we perform scanning superconducting quantum interference device (sSQUID) microscopy on these seemingly failed QAH insulators to image their current distribution. When gated to the charge neutral point, our device exhibits edge current, which flows unidirectionally on the odd-layer boundary both with vacuum and with the even-layer. The chirality of such edge current reverses with the magnetization of the bulk. Surprisingly, we find the edge channels coexist with finite bulk conduction even though the bulk chemical potential is in the band gap, suggesting their robustness under significant edge-bulk scattering. Our result establishes the existence of chiral edge currents in a topological antiferromagnet and offers an alternative for identifying QAH states.

Set-to-Sequence Ranking-based Concept-aware Learning Path Recommendation

With the development of the online education system, personalized education recommendation has played an essential role. In this paper, we focus on developing path recommendation systems that aim to generating and recommending an entire learning path to the given user in each session. Noticing that existing approaches fail to consider the correlations of concepts in the path, we propose a novel framework named Set-to-Sequence Ranking-based Concept-aware Learning Path Recommendation (SRC), which formulates the recommendation task under a set-to-sequence paradigm. Specifically, we first design a concept-aware encoder module which can capture the correlations among the input learning concepts. The outputs are then fed into a decoder module that sequentially generates a path through an attention mechanism that handles correlations between the learning and target concepts. Our recommendation policy is optimized by policy gradient. In addition, we also introduce an auxiliary module based on knowledge tracing to enhance the model's stability by evaluating students' learning effects on learning concepts. We conduct extensive experiments on two real-world public datasets and one industrial dataset, and the experimental results demonstrate the superiority and effectiveness of SRC. Code will be available at https://gitee.com/mindspore/models/tree/master/research/recommend/SRC.

The influence of adatom diffusion on the formation of skyrmion lattice in sub-monolayer Fe on Ir(111)

Room temperature grown Fe monolayer (ML) on the Ir(111) single crystal substrate has attracted great research interests as nano-skyrmion lattice can form under proper growth conditions. The formation of the nanoscale skyrmion, however, appears to be greatly affected by the diffusion length of the Fe adatoms on the Ir(111) surface. We made this observation by employing spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy to study skyrmion formation upon systematically changing the impurity density on the substrate surface prior to Fe deposition. Since the substrate surface impurities serve as pinning centers for Fe adatoms, the eventual size and shape of the Fe islands exhibit a direct correlation with the impurity density, which in turn determines whether skyrmion can be formed. Our observation indicates that skyrmion only forms when the impurity density is below 0.006/nm2, i.e., 12 nm averaged spacing between the neighboring defects. We verify the significance of Fe diffusion length by growing Fe on clean Ir(111) substrate at low temperature of 30 K, where no skyrmion was observed to form. Our findings signify the importance of diffusion of Fe atoms on the Ir(111) substrate, which affects the size, shape and lattice perfection of the Fe islands and thus the formation of skyrmion lattice.

Creation of nano-skyrmion lattice in Fe/Ir(111) system using voltage pulse

Magnetic ultrathin films grown on heavy metal substrates often exhibit rich spin structures due to the competition between various magnetic interactions such as Heisenberg exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and higher-order spin interactions. Here we employ spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy to study magnetic nano-skyrmion phase in Fe monolayer grown on Ir(111) substrate. Our observations show that the formation of nano-skyrmion lattice in the Fe/Ir(111) system depends sensitively on the growth conditions and various non-skyrmion spin states can be formed. Remarkably, the application of voltage pulses between the tip and the sample can trigger a non-skyrmion to skyrmion phase transition. The fact that nano-skyrmions can be created using voltage pulse indicates that the balance between the competing magnetic interactions can be affected by an external electric field, which is highly useful to design skyrmion-based spintronic devices with low energy consumption.

Magnetic domain structure and domain wall bound states of topological semimetal EuB6

Electrically manipulating domain wall (DW) is at central in the field of spintronics. Magnetic Weyl semimetal (WSM) offers an additional knob for electric manipulation of DW by utilizing the topological DW bound states. Using magnetic WSM material EuB6 as a prototype system, we investigate its DW bound states combining first principles calculations and domain imaging via magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The MFM measurements reveal that domains with magnetization aligned along three [100] directions dominate over others under a small magnetic field along [001] direction. Accordingly, first principles calculations are performed based on experimentally determined DW type, which show a robust DW bound state featuring a spectral distribution over a large portion of the DW Brillouin zone. Such DW bound states should result in significant amount of localized charges which can be used to drive DW motion via the electrostatic forces exerted on the localized DW charges.
