Full-counting statistics of transient energy current in mesoscopic systems

We investigate the full-counting statistics (FCS) of energy flow carried by electrons in the transient regime. Based on two measurement scheme we formulate a non-equilibrium Keldysh Green's function theory to compute the generating function for FCS of energy transport. Specifically, we express the generating function using the path integral along Keldysh contour and obtain exact solution of the generating function using the Grassmann algebra. With this formalism, we calculate the transient energy current and higher order cumulants for both single and double quantum dot (QD) systems in the transient regime. To examine finite bandwidth effect of leads to FCS of energy transport, we have used an exact solvable model with a Lorentizian linewidth where all non-equilibrium Green's functions can be solved exactly in the time domain. It is found that the transient energy current exhibits damped oscillatory behavior. For the single quantum dot system the frequency of oscillation is independent of bandwidth of the leads while the decay rate of the oscillation amplitude is determined by the lifetime of resonant state which increases as the bandwidth decreases. At short times, a universal scaling of maximum amplitude of normalized cumulants is identified for the single QD system. For the double QD system, the damped oscillation of energy current is dominated by Rabi oscillation with frequency approximately proportional to the coupling constant between two quantum dots. In general, the transient energy current increases when the coupling between two QDs is stronger. However, when the interdot coupling is larger than half of the external bias the transient energy current is suppressed significantly. All these results can be understood analytically.

Search for Evergreens in Science: A Functional Data Analysis

Evergreens in science are papers that display a continual rise in annual citations without decline, at least within a sufficiently long time period. Aiming to better understand evergreens in particular and patterns of citation trajectory in general, this paper develops a functional data analysis method to cluster citation trajectories of a sample of 1699 research papers published in 1980 in the American Physical Society (APS) journals. We propose a functional Poisson regression model for individual papers' citation trajectories, and fit the model to the observed 30-year citations of individual papers by functional principal component analysis and maximum likelihood estimation. Based on the estimated paper-specific coefficients, we apply the K-means clustering algorithm to cluster papers into different groups, for uncovering general types of citation trajectories. The result demonstrates the existence of an evergreen cluster of papers that do not exhibit any decline in annual citations over 30 years.

Full-counting statistics of energy transport of molecular junctions in the polaronic regime

We investigate the full-counting statistics (FCS) of energy transport carried by electrons in molecular junctions for the Anderson-Holstein model in the polaronic regime. Using two-time quantum measurement scheme, generating function (GF) for the energy transport is derived and expressed as a Fredholm determinant in terms of Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function in the time domain. Dressed tunneling approximation is used in decoupling the phonon cloud operator in the polaronic regime. This formalism enables us to analyze the time evolution of energy transport dynamics after a sudden switch-on of the coupling between the dot and the leads towards the stationary state. The steady state energy current cumulant GF in the long time limit is obtained in the energy domain as well. Universal relations for steady state energy current FCS are derived under finite temperature gradient with zero bias and this enables us to express the equilibrium energy current cumulant by a linear combination of lower order cumulants. Behaviors of energy current cumulants in steady state under temperature gradient and external bias are numerically studied and explained. Transient dynamics of energy current cumulants is numerically calculated and analyzed. The universal scaling of normalized transient energy cumulants is found under both temperature gradient and external bias.

Short time dynamics of molecular junctions after projective measurement

In this work, we study the short time dynamics of a molecular junction described by Anderson-Holstein model using full-counting statistics after projective measurement. The coupling between the central quantum dot (QD) and two leads was turned on at remote past and the system is evolved to steady state at time $t=0$, when we perform the projective measurement in one of the lead. Generating function for the charge transfer is expressed as a Fredholm determinant in terms of Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function in the time domain. It is found that the current is not constant at short times indicating that the measurement does perturb the system. We numerically compare the current behaviors after the projective measurement with those in the transient regime where the subsystems are connected at $t=0$. The universal scaling for high-order cumulants is observed for the case with zero QD occupation due to the unidirectional transport at short times. The influences of electron-phonon interaction on short time dynamics of electric current, shot noise and differential conductance are analyzed.

Dionysius: A Framework for Modeling Hierarchical User Interactions in Recommender Systems

We address the following problem: How do we incorporate user item interaction signals as part of the relevance model in a large-scale personalized recommendation system such that, (1) the ability to interpret the model and explain recommendations is retained, and (2) the existing infrastructure designed for the (user profile) content-based model can be leveraged? We propose Dionysius, a hierarchical graphical model based framework and system for incorporating user interactions into recommender systems, with minimal change to the underlying infrastructure. We learn a hidden fields vector for each user by considering the hierarchy of interaction signals, and replace the user profile-based vector with this learned vector, thereby not expanding the feature space at all. Thus, our framework allows the use of existing recommendation infrastructure that supports content based features. We implemented and deployed this system as part of the recommendation platform at LinkedIn for more than one year. We validated the efficacy of our approach through extensive offline experiments with different model choices, as well as online A/B testing experiments. Our deployment of this system as part of the job recommendation engine resulted in significant improvement in the quality of retrieved results, thereby generating improved user experience and positive impact for millions of users.

Optimal Power Control for Transmitting Correlated Sources with Energy Harvesting Constraints

We investigate the weighted-sum distortion minimization problem in transmitting two correlated Gaussian sources over Gaussian channels using two energy harvesting nodes. To this end, we develop offline and online power control policies to optimize the transmit power of the two nodes. In the offline case, we cast the problem as a convex optimization and investigate the structure of the optimal solution. We also develop a generalized water-filling based power allocation algorithm to obtain the optimal solution efficiently. For the online case, we quantify the distortion of the system using a cost function and show that the expected cost equals the expected weighted-sum distortion. Based on Banach's fixed point theorem, we further propose a geometrically converging algorithm to find the minimum cost via simple iterations. Simulation results show that our online power control outperforms the greedy power control where each node uses all the available energy in each slot and performs close to that of the proposed offline power control. Moreover, the performance of our offline power control almost coincides with the performance limit of the system.

Electronic structure and direct observation of ferrimagnetism in multiferroic hexagonal YbFeO3

The magnetic interaction between rare-earth and Fe ions in hexagonal rare-earth ferrites (h-REFeO3), may amplify the weak ferromagnetic moment on Fe, making these materials more appealing as multiferroics. To elucidate the interaction strength between the rare-earth and Fe ions as well as the magnetic moment of the rare-earth ions, element specific magnetic characterization is needed. Using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we have studied the ferrimagnetism in h-YbFeO3 by measuring the magnetization of Fe and Yb separately. The results directly show anti-alignment of magnetization of Yb and Fe ions in h-YbFeO3 at low temperature, with an exchange field on Yb of about 17 kOe. The magnetic moment of Yb is about 1.6 \muB at low-temperature, significantly reduced compared with the 4.5 \muB moment of a free Yb3+. In addition, the saturation magnetization of Fe in h-YbFeO3 has a sizable enhancement compared with that in h-LuFeO3. These findings directly demonstrate that ferrimagnetic order exists in h-YbFeO3; they also account for the enhancement of magnetization and the reduction of coercivity in h-YbFeO3 compared with those in h-LuFeO3 at low temperature, suggesting an important role for the rare-earth ions in tuning the multiferroic properties of h-REFeO3.

Degenerate cavity supporting more than 31 Laguerre-Gaussian modes

Photons propagating in Laguerre-Gaussian modes have characteristic orbital angular momentums, which are fundamental optical degrees of freedom. The orbital angular momentum of light has potential application in high capacity optical communication and even in quantum information processing. In this work, we experimentally construct a ring cavity with 4 lenses and 4 mirrors that is completely degenerate for Laguerre-Gaussian modes. By measuring the transmission peaks and patterns of different modes, the ring cavity is shown to supporting more than 31 Laguerre-Gaussian modes. The constructed degenerate cavity opens a new way for using the unlimited resource of available angular momentum states simultaneously.

Spin Fluctuation Induced Linear Magnetoresistance in Ultrathin Superconducting FeSe Films

The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in FeSe/STO has trigged great research interest to reveal a range of exotic physical phenomena in this novel material. Here we present a temperature dependent magnetotransport measurement for ultrathin FeSe/STO films with different thickness and protection layers. Remarkably, a surprising linear magnetoresistance (LMR) is observed around the superconducting transition temperatures but absent otherwise. The experimental LMR can be reproduced by magnetotransport calculations based on a model of magnetic field dependent disorder induced by spin fluctuation. Thus, the observed LMR in coexistence with superconductivity provides the first magnetotransport signature for spin fluctuation around the superconducting transition region in ultrathin FeSe/STO films.

On the origin of critical temperature enhancement in atomically-thin superconductors

Recent experiments showed that thinning gallium, iron selenide and 2H tantalum disulfide to single/several monoatomic layer(s) enhances their superconducting critical temperatures. Here, we characterize these superconductors by extracting the absolute values of the London penetration depth, the superconducting energy gap, and the relative jump in specific heat at the transition temperature from their self-field critical currents. Our central finding is that the enhancement in transition temperature for these materials arises from the opening of an additional superconducting gap, while retaining a largely unchanged bulk superconducting gap. Literature data reveals that ultrathin niobium films similarly develop a second superconducting gap. Based on the available data, it seems that, for type-II superconductors, a new superconducting band appears when the film thickness becomes smaller than the out-of-plane coherence length. The same mechanism may also be the cause of enhanced interface superconductivity.

On the cyclic torsion of elliptic curves over cubic number fields

Let $E$ be an elliptic defined over a number field $K$. Then its Mordell-Weil group $E(K)$ is finitely generated: $E(K)\cong E(K)_{tor}\times\mathbb{Z}^r$. In this paper, we discuss the cyclic torsion subgroup of elliptic curves over cubic number fields. For $N=169,143,91,65,77$ or $55$, we show that $\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z}$ is not a subgroup of $E(K)_{tor}$ for any elliptic curve $E$ over a cubic number field $K$.

Calorimetric Power Measurements in the EAST ECRH System

In this paper, the calorimetric power measurement method for electron cyclotron resonance heating system on EAST are presented. This method requires measurement of the water flow through the cooling circuits and the input and output water temperatures in each cooling circuit. Usually, the inlet water temperature is controlled to be stable to get more accurate results. The influence of the inlet water temperature change on the measurement results is analyzed for the first time in this paper. A novel temperature calibration method is proposed also. This kind of calibration method is accurate and effective, and can be easily implemented.

Generation and applications of an ultrahigh-fidelity four-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state

High-quality entangled photon pairs generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion have made great contributions to the modern quantum information science and the fundamental tests of quantum mechanics. However, the quality of the entangled states decreases sharply when moving from biphoton to multiphoton experiments, mainly due to the lack of interactions between photons. Here, for the first time, we generate a four-photon Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state with a fidelity of $98\%$, which is even comparable to the best fidelity of biphoton entangled states. Thus, it enables us to demonstrate an ultrahigh-fidelity entanglement swapping---the key ingredient in various quantum information tasks. Our results push the fidelity of multiphoton entanglement generation to a new level and would be useful in some demanding tasks, e.g., we successfully demonstrate the genuine multipartite nonlocality of the observed state in the nonsignaling scenario by violating a novel Hardy-like inequality, which requires very high state-fidelity.

Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order $N$-Jettiness Soft Function for One Massive Colored Particle Production at Hadron Colliders

The $N$-jettiness subtraction has proven to be an efficient method to perform differential QCD next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculations in the last few years. One important ingredient of this method is the NNLO soft function. We calculate this soft function for one massive colored particle production at hadron colliders. We select the color octet and color triplet cases to present the final results. We also discuss its application in NLO and NNLO differential calculations.

Composition dependent band offsets of ZnO and its ternary alloys

We report the calculated fundamental band gaps of \emph{wurtzite} ternary alloys Zn$_{1-x}$M$_x$O (M=Mg, Cd) and the band offsets of the ZnO/Zn$_{1-x}$M$_x$O heterojunctions, these II-VI materials are important for electronics and optoelectronics. Our calculation is based on density functional theory within the linear muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) approach where the modified Becke-Johnson (MBJ) semi-local exchange is used to accurately produce the band gaps, and the coherent potential approximation (CPA) is applied to deal with configurational average for the ternary alloys. The combined LMTO-MBJ-CPA approach allows one to simultaneously determine both the conduction band and valence band offsets of the heterojunctions. The calculated band gap data of the ZnO alloys scale as $E_g=3.35+2.33x$ and $E_g=3.36-2.33x+1.77x^2$ for Zn$_{1-x}$Mg$_x$O and Zn$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$O, respectively, where $x$ being the impurity concentration. These scaling as well as the composition dependent band offsets are quantitatively compared to the available experimental data. The capability of predicting the band parameters and band alignments of ZnO and its ternary alloys with the LMTO-CPA-MBJ approach indicate the promising application of this method in the design of emerging electronics and optoelectronics.

High-temperature superconductivity in one-unit-cell FeSe films

Since the dramatic interface enhancement of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) was reported in one unit-cell FeSe film grown on SrTiO3 substrate (1-UC FeSe/STO) by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), related research on this system has become a new frontier in condensed matter physics. In this paper, we present a brief review on this rapidly developing field, mainly focusing on the superconducting properties of 1-UC FeSe/STO. Experimental evidences for the high-temperature superconductivity in 1-UC FeSe/STO, including the direct evidences revealed by transport and diamagnetic measurements, and other evidences from scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), are overviewed. Potential mechanisms of the enhanced superconductivity are discussed. There are accumulating arguments suggesting that the strengthened Cooper pairing in 1-UC FeSe/STO originates from the interface effects, specifically charge transfer and coupling to phonon modes in TiO2 plane. The study of superconductivity in 1-UC FeSe/STO not only sheds a new light on the mechanism of high-temperature superconductors with layered structures, but also provides the insight to explore new superconductors by interface engineering.

A Novel Quantum Image Compression Method Based on JPEG

Quantum image processing has been a hot topic. The first step of it is to store an image into qubits, which is called quantum image preparation. Different quantum image representations may have different preparation methods. In this paper, we use GQIR (the generalized quantum image representation) to represent an image, and try to decrease the operations used in preparation, which is also known as quantum image compression. Our compression scheme is based on JPEG (named from its inventor: the Joint Photographic Experts Group) --- the most widely used method for still image compression in classical computers. We input the quantized JPEG coefficients into qubits and then convert them into pixel values. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the compression ratio of our scheme is obviously higher than that of the previous compression method.

Valley Seebeck effect in gate tunable zigzag graphene nanoribbons

We propose, for the first time, a valley Seebeck effect in gate tunable zigzag graphene nanoribbons as a result of the interplay between thermal gradient and valleytronics. A pure valley current is further generated by the thermal gradient as well as the external bias. In a broad temperature range, the pure valley current is found to be linearly dependent on the temperature gradient while it increases with the increasing temperature of one lead for a fixed thermal gradient. A valley field effect transistor (FET) driven by the temperature gradient is proposed that can turn on and off the pure valley current by gate voltage. The threshold gate voltage and on valley current are proportional to the temperature gradient. When the system switches on at positive gate voltage, the pure valley current is nearly independent of gate voltage. The valley transconductance is up to 30 μS if we take Ampere as the unit of the valley current. This valley FET may find potential application in future valleytronics and valley caloritronics.
