Colocated MIMO Radar Waveform Design for Transmit Beampattern Formation

In this paper, colocated MIMO radar waveform design is considered by minimizing the integrated side-lobe level to obtain beam patterns with lower side-lobe levels than competing methods. First, a quadratic programming problem is formulated to design beam patterns by using the criteria for a minimal integrated side-lobe level. A theorem is derived that provides a closed-form analytical optimal solution that appears to be an extension of the Rayleigh quotient minimization for a possibly singular matrix in quadratic form. Such singularities are shown to occur in the problem of interest, but proofs for the optimum solution in these singular matrix cases could not be found in the literature. Next, an additional constraint is added to obtain beam patterns with desired 3 dB beamwidths, resulting in a nonconvex quadratically constrained quadratic program which is NP-hard. A semidefinite program and a Gaussian randomized semidefinite relaxation are used to determine feasible solutions arbitrarily close to the solution to the original problem. Theoretical and numerical analyses illustrate the impacts of changing the number of transmitters and orthogonal waveforms employed in the designs. Numerical comparisons are conducted to evaluate the proposed design approaches.

Giant negative magnetoresistance induced by the chiral anomaly in individual Cd3As2 nanowires

Cd3As2 is a newly booming Dirac semimetal with linear dispersion along all three momentum directions and can be viewed as 3D analog of graphene. As breaking of either time reversal symmetry or spatial inversion symmetry, the Dirac semimetal is believed to transform into Weyl semimetal with exotic chiral anomaly effect, while the experimental evidence of the chiral anomaly is still missing in Cd3As2. Here we report the magneto-transport properties of individual Cd3As2 nanowires. Large negative magnetoresistance (MR) with magnitude of -63% at 60 K and -11% at 300 K are observed when the magnetic field is parallel with the electric field direction, giving the evidence of the chiral magnetic effect in Cd3As2 nanowires. In addition, the critical magnetic field BC, where there is an extremum of the negative MR, increases with increasing temperature. As the first observation of chiral anomaly induced negative MR in Cd3As2 nanowires, it may offer valuable insights for low dimensional physics in Dirac semimetals.

The Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem for 6-dimensional manifolds with boundary

In this paper, we define lower dimensional volumes of spin manifolds with boundary. We compute the lower dimensional volume ${\rm Vol}_{6}^{(1,3)}$ for 6-dimensional spin manifolds with boundary and the gravity on boundary is derived by the noncommutative residue associated with Dirac operators. For 6-dimensional manifolds with boundary, we also get a Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem for a general fourth order operator.

Intrinsic Contractivity of Feynman-Kac Semigroups for Symmetric Jump Processes with Infinite Range Jumps

Let $(X_t)_{t\ge 0}$ be a symmetric strong Markov process generated by non-local regular Dirichlet form $(D,\D(D))$ as follows \begin{equation*} \begin{split} & D(f,g)=\int_{\R^d}\int_{\R^d}\big(f(x)-f(y)\big)\big(g(x)-g(y)\big) J(x,y)\,dx\,dy, \quad f,g\in \D(D) \end{split} \end{equation*} where $J(x,y)$ is a strictly positive and symmetric measurable function on $\R^d\times \R^d$. We study the intrinsic hypercontractivity, intrinsic supercontractivity and intrinsic ultracontractivity for the Feynman-Kac semigroup $$ T^V_t(f)(x)=\Ee^x\left(\exp\Big(-\int_0^tV(X_s)\,ds\Big)f(X_t)\right),\,\, x\in\R^d, f\in L^2(\R^d;dx).$$ In particular, we prove that for $$J(x,y)\asymp|x-y|^{-d-α}\I_{\{|x-y|\le 1\}}+e^{-|x-y|}\I_{\{|x-y|> 1\}}$$ with $α\in (0,2)$ and $V(x)=|x|^λ$ with $λ>0$, $(T_t^V)_{t\ge 0}$ is intrinsically ultracontractive if and only if $λ>1$; and that for symmetric $α$-stable process $(X_t)_{t\ge0}$ with $α\in (0,2)$ and $V(x)=\log^λ(1+|x|)$ with some $λ>0$, $(T_t^V)_{t\ge 0}$ is intrinsically ultracontractive (or intrinsically supercontractive) if and only if $λ>1$, and $(T_t^V)_{t\ge 0}$ is intrinsically hypercontractive if and only if $λ\ge1$. Besides, we also investigate intrinsic contractivity properties of $(T_t^V)_{t \ge 0}$ for the case that $\liminf_{|x| \to \infty}V(x)<\infty$.

Electrical Probing of Field-Driven Cascading Quantized Transitions of Skyrmion Cluster States in MnSi Nanowires

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically stable whirlpool-like spin textures that offer great promise as information carriers for future ultra-dense memory and logic devices1-4. To enable such applications, particular attention has been focused on the skyrmions properties in highly confined geometry such as one dimensional nanowires5-8. Hitherto it is still experimentally unclear what happens when the width of the nanowire is comparable to that of a single skyrmion. Here we report the experimental demonstration of such scheme, where magnetic field-driven skyrmion cluster (SC) states with small numbers of skyrmions were demonstrated to exist on the cross-sections of ultra-narrow single-crystal MnSi nanowires (NWs) with diameters, comparable to the skyrmion lattice constant (18 nm). In contrast to the skyrmion lattice in bulk MnSi samples, the skyrmion clusters lead to anomalous magnetoresistance (MR) behavior measured under magnetic field parallel to the NW long axis, where quantized jumps in MR are observed and directly associated with the change of the skyrmion number in the cluster, which is supported by Monte Carlo simulations. These jumps show the key difference between the clustering and crystalline states of skyrmions, and lay a solid foundation to realize skyrmion-based memory devices that the number of skyrmions can be counted via conventional electrical measurements.

Resummation prediction on the jet mass spectrum in one-jet inclusive production at the LHC

We study the factorization and resummation prediction on the jet mass spectrum in one-jet inclusive production at the LHC based on soft-collinear effective theory. The soft function with anti-$k_T$ algorithm is calculated at next-to-leading order and its validity is demonstrated by checking the agreement between the expanded leading singular terms with the exact fixed-order result. The large logarithms $\ln^{n} (m_J^2/p_T^2)$ and the global logarithms $\ln^{n} (s_4/p_T^2)$ in the process are resummed to all order at next-to-leading logarithmic and next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic level, respectively. The cross section is enhanced by about 23% from the next-to-leading logarithmic level to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic level. Comparing our resummation predictions with those from Monte Carlo tool PYTHIA and ATLAS data at the 7 TeV LHC, we find that the peak positions of the jet mass spectra agree with those from PYTHIA at parton level, and the predictions of the jet mass spectra with non-perturbative effects are in coincidence with the ATLAS data. We also show the predictions at the future 13 TeV LHC.

Recovery of Sparse Signals via Generalized Orthogonal Matching Pursuit: A New Analysis

As an extension of orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) improving the recovery performance of sparse signals, generalized OMP (gOMP) has recently been studied in the literature. In this paper, we present a new analysis of the gOMP algorithm using restricted isometry property (RIP). We show that if the measurement matrix $\mathbfΦ \in \mathcal{R}^{m \times n}$ satisfies the RIP with $$δ_{\max \left\{9, S + 1 \right\}K} \leq \frac{1}{8},$$ then gOMP performs stable reconstruction of all $K$-sparse signals $\mathbf{x} \in \mathcal{R}^n$ from the noisy measurements $\mathbf{y} = \mathbf{Φx} + \mathbf{v}$ within $\max \left\{K, \left\lfloor \frac{8K}{S} \right\rfloor \right\}$ iterations where $\mathbf{v}$ is the noise vector and $S$ is the number of indices chosen in each iteration of the gOMP algorithm. For Gaussian random measurements, our results indicate that the number of required measurements is essentially $m = \mathcal{O}(K \log \frac{n}{K})$, which is a significant improvement over the existing result $m = \mathcal{O}(K^2 \log \frac{n}{K})$, especially for large $K$.

LiSens --- A Scalable Architecture for Video Compressive Sensing

The measurement rate of cameras that take spatially multiplexed measurements by using spatial light modulators (SLM) is often limited by the switching speed of the SLMs. This is especially true for single-pixel cameras where the photodetector operates at a rate that is many orders-of-magnitude greater than the SLM. We study the factors that determine the measurement rate for such spatial multiplexing cameras (SMC) and show that increasing the number of pixels in the device improves the measurement rate, but there is an optimum number of pixels (typically, few thousands) beyond which the measurement rate does not increase. This motivates the design of LiSens, a novel imaging architecture, that replaces the photodetector in the single-pixel camera with a 1D linear array or a line-sensor. We illustrate the optical architecture underlying LiSens, build a prototype, and demonstrate results of a range of indoor and outdoor scenes. LiSens delivers on the promise of SMCs: imaging at a megapixel resolution, at video rate, using an inexpensive low-resolution sensor.

Automatic computations at next-to-leading order in QCD for top-quark flavor-changing neutral processes

Computations at next-to-leading order in the Standard Model offer new technical challenges in presence of higher dimensional operators. We introduce a framework that, starting from the top-quark effective field theory at dimension six, allows to make predictions for cross sections as well as distributions in a fully automatic way. As an application, we present the first complete results at NLO in QCD for flavor changing neutral interactions including parton shower effects, for $tZ$, $th$, $tγ$ associated production at the LHC.

Anisotropic Magnetotransport and Exotic Longitudinal Linear Magnetoresistance in WTe2 Crystals

WTe2 semimetal, as a typical layered transition-metal dichalcogenide, has recently attracted much attention due to the extremely large, non-saturating parabolic magnetoresistance in perpendicular field. Here, we report a systematic study of the angular dependence of the magnetoresistance in WTe2 single crystal. The violation of the Kohler rule and a significant anisotropic magnetotransport behavior in different magnetic field directions are observed. Surprisingly, when the applied field is parallel to the tungsten chains of WTe2, an exotic large longitudinal linear magnetoresistance as high as 1200% at 15 T and 2 K is identified. Violation of the Kohler rule in transverse magnetoresistance can be understood based on a dual effect of the excitons formation and thermal activation, while large longitudinal linear magnetoresistance reflects perfectly the scattering and nesting of quasi-1D nature of this balanced hole-electron system. Our work will stimulate studies of such double-carrier correlated material and corresponding quantum physics.

The leptophilic dark matter with $Z'$ interaction: from indirect searches to future $e^+ e^-$ collider searches

We investigate the scenario where the dark matter only interacts with the charged leptons in the standard model via a neutral vector mediator $Z'$. Such a scenario with a 430 GeV dark matter can fit the recent positron fluxes observed by the AMS-02 Collaborations, with the reasonable boost factors. We study the possibility of searching such leptophilic $Z'$ via its lepton final states and invisible decay modes at the future electron-positron colliders, such as the International Linear Collider (ILC) and the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC). We find that for the benchmark models with $Z'$ mass from 1.0 TeV to 1.5 TeV, the searches for the invisible decays of $Z'\to \bar χχ$ is easily achieved at the CLIC 1.5 TeV runs via the mono-photon process. However, lighter $Z'$ with mass from 0.5 TeV to 0.8 TeV are challenging to see. The di-lepton plus single photon channel can reveal the $Z'$ mass at the ILC and CLIC with moderate luminosities.

Perturbations of Functional Inequalities for Lévy Type Dirichlet Forms

Perturbations of super Poincaré and weak Poincaré inequalities for Lévy type Dirichlet forms are studied. When the range of jumps is finite our results are natural extensions to the corresponding ones derived earlier for diffusion processes; and we show that the study for the situation with infinite range of jumps is essentially different. Some examples are presented to illustrate the optimality of our results.

Functional Inequalities for Convolution Probability Measures

Let $μ$ and $ν$ be two probability measures on $\R^d$, where $μ(\d x)= \e^{-V(x)}\d x$ for some $V\in C^1(\R^d)$. Explicit sufficient conditions on $V$ and $ν$ are presented such that $μ*ν$ satisfies the log-Sobolev, Poincaré and super Poincaré inequalities. In particular, the recent results on the log-Sobolev inequality derived in \cite{Z} for convolutions of the Gaussian measure and compactly supported probability measures are improved and extended.

Linear Evolution Equations with Cylindrical Lévy Noise: Gradient Estimates and Exponential Ergodicity

Explicit coupling property and gradient estimates are investigated for the linear evolution equations on Hilbert spaces driven by an additive cylindrical Lévy process. The results are efficiently applied to establish the exponential ergodicity for the associated transition semigroups. In particular, our results extend recent developments on related topic for cylindrical symmetric $α$-stable processes.

Intrinsic Ultracontractivity of Feynman-Kac Semigroups for Symmetric Jump Processes

Consider the symmetric non-local Dirichlet form $(D,\D(D))$ given by $$ D(f,f)=\int_{\R^d}\int_{\R^d}\big(f(x)-f(y)\big)^2 J(x,y)\,dx\,dy $$with $\D(D)$ the closure of the set of $C^1$ functions on $\R^d$ with compact support under the norm $\sqrt{D_1(f,f)}$, where $D_1(f,f):=D(f,f)+\int f^2(x)\,dx$ and $J(x,y)$ is a nonnegative symmetric measurable function on $\R^d\times \R^d$. Suppose that there is a Hunt process $(X_t)_{t\ge 0}$ on $\R^d$ corresponding to $(D,\D(D))$, and that $(L,\D(L))$ is its infinitesimal generator. We study the intrinsic ultracontractivity for the Feynman-Kac semigroup $(T_t^V)_{t\ge 0}$ generated by $L^V:=L-V$, where $V\ge 0$ is a non-negative locally bounded measurable function such that Lebesgue measure of the set $\{x\in \R^d: V(x)\le r\}$ is finite for every $r>0$. By using intrinsic super Poincaré inequalities and establishing an explicit lower bound estimate for the ground state, we present general criteria for the intrinsic ultracontractivity of $(T_t^V)_{t\ge 0}$. In particular, if $$J(x,y)\asymp|x-y|^{-d-α}\I_{\{|x-y|\le 1\}}+e^{-|x-y|^γ}\I_{\{|x-y|> 1\}}$$ for some $α\in (0,2)$ and $γ\in(1,\infty]$, and the potential function $V(x)=|x|^θ$ for some $θ>0$, then $(T_t^V)_{t\ge 0}$ is intrinsically ultracontractive if and only if $θ>1$. When $θ>1$, we have the following explicit estimates for the ground state $ϕ_1$ $$c_1\exp\Big(-c_2 θ^{\frac{γ-1}γ}|x| \log^{\frac{γ-1}γ}(1+|x|)\Big) \le ϕ_1(x) \le c_3\exp\Big(-c_4 θ^{\frac{γ-1}γ}|x| \log^{\frac{γ-1}γ}(1+|x|)\Big) ,$$ where $c_i>0$ $(i=1,2,3,4)$ are constants. We stress that, our method efficiently applies to the Hunt process $(X_t)_{t \ge 0}$ with finite range jumps, and some irregular potential function $V$ such that $\lim_{|x| \to \infty}V(x)\neq\infty$.

Support Recovery with Orthogonal Matching Pursuit in the Presence of Noise: A New Analysis

Support recovery of sparse signals from compressed linear measurements is a fundamental problem in compressed sensing (CS). In this paper, we study the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm for the recovery of support under noise. We consider two signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) settings: i) the SNR depends on the sparsity level $K$ of input signals, and ii) the SNR is an absolute constant independent of $K$. For the first setting, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the exact support recovery with OMP, expressed as lower bounds on the SNR. Our results indicate that in order to ensure the exact support recovery of all $K$-sparse signals with the OMP algorithm, the SNR must at least scale linearly with the sparsity level $K$. In the second setting, since the necessary condition on the SNR is not fulfilled, the exact support recovery with OMP is impossible. However, our analysis shows that recovery with an arbitrarily small but constant fraction of errors is possible with the OMP algorithm. This result may be useful for some practical applications where obtaining some large fraction of support positions is adequate.

Detection of a superconducting phase in a two-atom layer of hexagonal Ga film grown on semiconducting GaN(0001)

The recent observation of superconducting state at atomic scale has motivated the pursuit of exotic condensed phases in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Here we report on a superconducting phase in two-monolayer crystalline Ga films epitaxially grown on wide band-gap semiconductor GaN(0001). This phase exhibits a hexagonal structure and only 0.552 nm in thickness, nevertheless, brings about a superconducting transition temperature Tc as high as 5.4 K, confirmed by in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy, and ex situ electrical magneto-transport and magnetization measurements. The anisotropy of critical magnetic field and Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like transition are observed, typical for the 2D superconductivity. Our results demonstrate a novel platform for exploring atomic-scale 2D superconductor, with great potential for understanding of the interface superconductivity.
