Interplay between topological insulators and superconductors

Topological insulators are insulating in the bulk but possess metallic surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry. Here, we report a detailed electronic transport study in high quality Bi2Se3 topological insulator thin films contacted by superconducting (In, Al and W) electrodes. The resistance of the film shows an abrupt and significant upturn when the electrodes become superconducting. In turn, the Bi2Se3 film strongly weakens the superconductivity of the electrodes, significantly reducing both their transition temperatures and critical fields. A possible interpretation of these results is that the superconducting electrodes are accessing the surface states and the experimental results are the consequence of the interplay between the Cooper pairs of the electrodes and the spin polarized current of the surface states in Bi2Se3.

Dimensional collapse and fractal attractors of a system with fluctuating delay times

A frequently encountered situation in the study of delay systems is that the length of the delay time changes with time, which is of relevance in many fields such as optics, mechanical machining, biology or physiology. A characteristic feature of such systems is that the dimension of the system dynamics collapses due to the fluctuations of delay times. In consequence, the support of the long-trajectory attractors of this kind of systems is found being fractal in contrast to the fuzzy attractors in most random systems.

Enhancement of shot noise due to the fluctuation of Coulomb interaction

We have developed a theoretical formalism to investigate the contribution of fluctuation of Coulomb interaction to the shot noise based on Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function method. We have applied our theory to study the behavior of dc shot noise of atomic junctions using the method of nonequilibrium Green's function combined with the density functional theory (NEGF-DFT). In particular, for atomic carbon wire consisting 4 carbon atoms in contact with two Al(100) electrodes, first principles calculation within NEGF-DFT formalism shows a negative differential resistance (NDR) region in I-V curve at finite bias due to the effective band bottom of the Al lead. We have calculated the shot noise spectrum using the conventional gauge invariant transport theory with Coulomb interaction considered explicitly on the Hartree level along with exchange and correlation effect. Although the Fano factor is enhanced from 0.6 to 0.8 in the NDR region, the expected super-Poissonian behavior in the NDR regionis not observed. When the fluctuation of Coulomb interaction is included in the shot noise, our numerical results show that the Fano factor is greater than one in the NDR region indicating a super-Poissonian behavior.

Next-to-leading order QCD effect of $W'$ on top quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry

We present the calculations of the complete next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the total cross section, invariant mass distribution and the forward-backward asymmetry ($\rm A_{FB}$) of top quark pair production mediated by $W'$ boson. Our results show that in the best fit point in the parameter space allowed by data at the Tevatron, the NLO corrections change the new physics contributions to the total cross section slightly, but increase the $\rm A_{FB}$ in the large invariant mass region by about 9%. Moreover, we evaluate the total cross section and charge asymmetry ($\rm{A}_{\rm{C}}$) of top pair production at the LHC, and find that both total cross section and $A_{\rm C}$ can be used to distinguish NP from SM with the integrated luminosity increasing.

Model independent analysis of top quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron up to $\mathcal{O}(\as^2/Λ^2)$

We present the complete calculations of the forward-backward asymmetry ($A_{\rm FB}$) and the total cross section of top quark pair production induced by dimension-six four quark operators at the Tevatron up to $\mathcal{O}(\as^2/Λ^2)$. Our results show that next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections can change $A_{\rm FB}$ and the total cross section by about 10%. Moreover, NLO QCD corrections reduce the dependence of $A_{\rm FB}$ and total cross section on the renormalization and factorization scales significantly. We also evaluate the total cross section and the charge asymmetry ($A_{\rm C}$) induced by these operators at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) up to $\mathcal{O}(\as^2/Λ^2)$, for the parameter space allowed by the Tevatron data. We find that the value of $A_{\rm C}$ induced by these operators is much larger than SM prediction, and LHC has potential to discover these NP effects when the measurement precision increases.

Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for the signal of Dark Matter and photon associated production at the LHC

We study the potential of LHC to discovery the signal of Dark Matter with photon associated production induced by a dimension six effective operator, including NLO QCD corrections. We investigate the main backgrounds from SM, i.e. $Z$ boson and a photon associated production with invisible dacay of $Z$ boson, and $Z$ boson and a jet production with the jet misidentified as a photon. We find that the $p_T^γ$ distributions of the backgrounds decrease faster than that of the signal with increasing of the transverse momentum of the photon. The $η^γ$ distributions of the backgrounds are almost flat in the full range of $η^γ$. In contrast, the signal lies mainly in the central region of $η^γ$. These characteristics may help to select the events in experiments. We show that in the parameter space allowed by the relic abundance constraint, which we have calculated at the NLO QCD level, the LHC with $\sqrt{S}=7{\rm TeV}$ may discovery this signal at the $5σ$ level after collecting an integrated luminosity of $1 {\rm fb}^{-1}$. On the other hand, if this signal is not observed at the LHC, we can set a lower limit on the new physics scale at the $3σ$ level.

Disorder induced quantized conductance with fractional value and universal conductance fluctuation in three-dimensional topological insulators

We report a theoretical investigation on the conductance and its fluctuation of three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TI) in $Bi_2Se_3$ and $Sb_2Te_3$ in the presence of disorders. Extensive numerical simulations are carried out. We find that in the diffusive regime the conductance is quantized with fractional value. Importantly, the conductance fluctuation is also quantized with a universal value. For 3D TI connected by two terminals, three independent conductances $G_{zz}$, $G_{xx}$ and $G_{zx}$ are identified where z is the normal direction of quintuple layer of 3D TI (see inset of Fig.1). The quantized conductance are found to be $ =1$, $ =4/3$ and $ =6/5$ with corresponding quantized conductance fluctuation 0.54, 0.47, and 0.50. The quantization of average conductance and its fluctuation can be understood by theory of mode mixing. The experimental realization that can observe the quantization of average conductance is discussed.

Observation of the superconducting proximity effect and possible evidence for Pearl vortices in a candidate topological insulator

We report the observation of the superconducting proximity effect in nanoribbons of a candidate topological insulator (Bi2Se3) which is interfaced with superconducting (tungsten) contacts. We observe a supercurrent and multiple Andreev reflections for channel lengths that are much longer than the inelastic and diffusive thermal lengths deduced from normal state transport. This suggests that the proximity effect couples preferentially to a ballistic surface transport channel, even in the presence of a coexisting diffusive bulk channel. When a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plane of the nanoribbon, we observe magnetoresistance oscillations that are periodic in magnetic field. Quantitative comparison with a model of vortex blockade relates the occurrence of these oscillations to the formation of Pearl vortices in the region of proximity induced superconductivity.

One-loop Helicity Amplitudes for Top Quark Pair Production in Randall-Sundrum Model

In this paper, we show how to calculate analytically the one-loop helicity amplitudes for the process $q\bar{q} rightarrow t\bar{t}$ induced by KK gluon, using the spinor-helicity formalism. A minimal set of Feynman rules which are uniquely fixed by gauge invariance and the color representation of the KK gluon are derived and used in the calculation. Our results can be applied to a variety of models containing a massive color octet vector boson.

Topological Anderson insulator phenomena

We study the nature of the disorder-induced quantized conductance, i.e., the phenomena of topological Anderson insulator (TAI) induced in HgTe/CdTe semiconductor quantum well. The disorder effect in several different systems where anomalous Hall effect exist, is numerically studied using the tight-binding Hamiltonian. It is found that the TAI phenomena also occur in the modified Dirac model where the quadratic corrections $k^2σ_z$ is included and electron-hole symmetry is kept. It also occurs in the graphene system with the next nearest-neighbor coupling and staggered sublattice potential. Comparison between the localization lengths of the 2D ribbon and 2D cylinder clearly reveals the topological nature of this phenomena. Furthermore, analysis on the local current density in anomalous quantum Hall systems where the TAI phenomena can or can not arise reveals the nature of TAI phenomena: the bulk state is killed drastically and only the robust edge state survives in a moderate disorder. When the edge state is robust enough to resist the strong disorder that can completely kills the bulk state, TAI phenomena arise.

Some Theorems on Feller Processes: Transience, Local Times and Ultracontractivity

We present sufficient conditions for the transience and the existence of local times of a Feller process, and the ultracontractivity of the associated Feller semigroup; these conditions are sharp for Lévy processes. The proof uses a local symmetrization technique and a uniform upper bound for the characteristic function of a Feller process. As a byproduct, we obtain for stable-like processes (in the sense of R.\ Bass) on $\R^d$ with smooth variable index $α(x)\in(0,2)$ a transience criterion in terms of the exponent $α(x)$; if $d=1$ and $\inf_{x\in\R} α(x)\in (1,2)$, then the stable-like process has local times.

Co3O4 Nanocrystals on Graphene as a Synergistic Catalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Catalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions are at the heart of key renewable energy technologies including fuel cells and water splitting. Despite tremendous efforts, developing oxygen electrode catalysts with high activity at low costs remains a grand challenge. Here, we report a hybrid material of Co3O4 nanocrystals grown on reduced graphene oxide (GO) as a high-performance bi-functional catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). While Co3O4 or graphene oxide alone has little catalytic activity, their hybrid exhibits an unexpected, surprisingly high ORR activity that is further enhanced by nitrogen-doping of graphene. The Co3O4/N-doped graphene hybrid exhibits similar catalytic activity but superior stability to Pt in alkaline solutions. The same hybrid is also highly active for OER, making it a high performance non-precious metal based bi-catalyst for both ORR and OER. The unusual catalytic activity arises from synergetic chemical coupling effects between Co3O4 and graphene.

Current induced anisotropic magnetoresistance in topological insulator films

Topological insulators are insulating in the bulk but possess spin-momentum locked metallic surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry. The existence of these surface states has been confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Detecting these surface states by transport measurement, which might at first appear to be the most direct avenue, was shown to be much more challenging than expected. Here, we report a detailed electronic transport study in high quality Bi2Se3 topological insulator thin films. Measurements under in-plane magnetic field, along and perpendicular to the bias current show opposite magnetoresistance. We argue that this contrasting behavior is related to the locking of the spin and current direction providing evidence for helical spin structure of the topological surface states.

Superconducting Vortices induced Periodic Magnetoresistance Oscillations in Single Crystal Au Nanowires

We show in this paper that it is possible to induce superconducting vortices in a gold nanowire connected to superconducting electrodes. The gold nanowire acquires superconductivity by the proximity effect. The differential magnetoresistance of the nanowire beyond a critical magnetic field shows uniform oscillations with increasing field with a period of \phi0/(2\pir^2) (\phi0 = h/2e is the superconducting flux quantum, r = 35 nm is the radius of the nanowire). We demonstrate that these periodic oscillations are the signatures of the sequential generation and moving of vortices across the gold nanowire.

Shapiro Steps in the Absence of Microwave Radiation

The current-voltage I-V characteristics of a 1.2 \mum long Au nanowire contacted by superconducting electrodes were studied in details. Interestingly, the I-V curves over a wide range of temperatures display multiple steps at voltages V = (m/n)(V0/2e) in the absence of microwave radiation, where m, n are integer numbers and V0 ~ 92 \muV. We posit that these steps are the subharmonic Shapiro steps due to the interplay of the ac Josephson current and a minigap in the Au nanowire induced by superconducting electrodes via the proximity effect.

Performance Analysis of the Matrix Pair Beamformer with Matrix Mismatch

Matrix pair beamformer (MPB) is a blind beamformer. It exploits the temporal structure of the signal of interest (SOI) and applies generalized eigen-decomposition to a covariance matrix pair. Unlike other blind algorithms, it only uses the second order statistics. A key assumption in the previous work is that the two matrices have the same interference statistics. However, this assumption may be invalid in the presence of multipath propagations or certain "smart" jammers, and we call it as matrix mismatch. This paper analyzes the performance of MPB with matrix mismatch. First, we propose a general framework that covers the existing schemes. Then, we derive its normalized output SINR. It reveals that the matrix mismatch leads to a threshold effect caused by "steering vector competition". Second, using matrix perturbation theory, we find that, if there are generalized eigenvalues that are infinite, the threshold will increase unboundedly with the interference power. This is highly probable when there are multiple periodical interferers. Finally, we present simulation results to verify our analysis.

A Simple Proof of the Mutual Incoherence Condition for Orthogonal Matching Pursuit

This paper provides a simple proof of the mutual incoherence condition $μ< \frac{1}{2K-1}$ under which K-sparse signal can be accurately reconstructed from a small number of linear measurements using the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm. Our proof, based on mathematical induction, is built on an observation that the general step of the OMP process is in essence same as the initial step since the residual is considered as a new measurement preserving the sparsity level of an input vector.
