Strong Feller Continuity of Feller Processes and Semigroups

We study two equivalent characterizations of the strong Feller property for a Markov process and of the associated sub-Markovian semigroup. One is described in terms of locally uniform absolute continuity, whereas the other uses local Orlicz-ultracontractivity. These criteria generalize many existing results on strong Feller continuity and seem to be more natural for Feller processes. By establishing the estimates of the first exit time from balls, we also investigate the continuity of harmonic functions for Feller processes which enjoy the strong Feller property.

On the Coupling Property and the Liouville Theorem for Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Processes

Using a coupling for the weighted sum of independent random variables and the explicit expression of the transition semigroup of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes driven by compound Poisson processes, we establish the existence of a successful coupling and the Liouville theorem for general Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. Then we present the explicit coupling property of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes directly from the behaviour of the corresponding symbol or characteristic exponent. This approach allows us to derive gradient estimates for Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes via the symbol.

Security proof of Counterfactual Quantum Cryptography against General Intercept-resend Attacks and Its Vulnerability

Counterfactual quantum cryptography (CQC), recently proposed by Noh, is featured with no transmission of signal particles. This exhibits evident security advantage, such as its immunity to the well known PNS attack. In this paper, the theoretical security of CQC protocol against the general intercept-resend attacks is proved by bounding the information of an eavesdropper Eve more tightly than in Yin's proposal[Phys. Rev. A 82, 042335 (2010)]. It is also showed that practical CQC implementations may be vulnerable when equipped with imperfect apparatuses, by proving that a negative key rate can be achieved when Eve launches a time-shift attack based on imperfect detector efficiency.

Functional Inequalities and Subordination: Stability of Nash and Poincaré inequalities

We show that certain functional inequalities, e.g.\ Nash-type and Poincaré-type inequalities, for infinitesimal generators of $C_0$ semigroups are preserved under subordination in the sense of Bochner. Our result improves \cite[Theorem 1.3]{BM} by A.\ Bendikov and P.\ Maheux for fractional powers, and it also holds for non-symmetric settings. As an application, we will derive hypercontractivity, supercontractivity and ultracontractivity of subordinate semigroups.

Constructions of Coupling Processes for Lévy Processes

We construct optimal Markov couplings of Lévy processes, whose Lévy (jump) measure has an absolutely continuous component. The construction is based on properties of subordinate Brownian motions and the coupling of Brownian motions by reflection.

Harnack Inequalities for Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Processes Driven by Lévy Processes

By using the existing sharp estimates of density function for rotationally invariant symmetric $α$-stable Lévy processes and rotationally invariant symmetric truncated $α$-stable Lévy processes, we obtain that Harnack inequalities hold for rotationally invariant symmetric $α$-stable Lévy processes with $α\in(0,2)$ and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes driven by rotationally invariant symmetric $α$-stable Lévy process, while logarithmic Harnack inequalities are satisfied for rotationally invariant symmetric truncated $α$-stable Lévy processes.

On the Coupling Property of Lévy Processes

We give necessary and sufficient conditions guaranteeing that the coupling for Lévy processes (with non-degenerate jump part) is successful. Our method relies on explicit formulae for the transition semigroup of a compound Poisson process and earlier results by Mineka and Lindvall-Rogers on couplings of random walks. In particular, we obtain that a Lévy process admits a successful coupling, if it is a strong Feller process or if the Lévy (jump) measure has an absolutely continuous component.

Anti-proximity Effect in Aluminum Nanowires

The anti-proximity effect, where the superconductivity in superconducting nanowires is suppressed or weakened when contacted by bulk superconducting electrodes, first revealed in arrays of Zn nanowires by tuning the electrodes from the superconducting to the normal state by means of an external magnetic field, has been confirmed in single crystal Aluminum nanowires. The critical current at zero magnetic field of an individual aluminum nanowire contacted by superconducting electrodes was found to be significantly smaller than that with normal electrodes showing that the effect is not a consequence of the magnetic field.

On the Geometry of Tangent Bundles with the Rescaled Metric

For a Riemannian manifold $M$, we determine some curvature properties of a tangent bundle equipped with the rescaled metric. The main aim of this paper is to give explicit formulae for the rescaled metric on $TM$, and investigate the geodesics on the tangent bundle with respect to the rescaled Sasaki metric.

A generalization of the line translation theorem

Through the method of brick decomposition and the operations on essential topological lines, we generalize the line translation theorem of Beguin, Crovisier, Le Roux [BCL] in the case where the property of preserving a finite measure with total support is replaced by the intersection property.

Semiquantum secret sharing using two-particle entangled state

Recently, Boyer et al. presented a novel semiquantum key distribution protocol [M. Boyer, D. Kenigsberg, and T. Mor, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 140501 (2007)], in which quantum Alice shares a secret key with classical Bob. Li et al. proposed two semiquantum secret sharing protocols [Q. Li, W. H. Chan, and D. Y. Long, Phys. Rev. A 82, 022303 (2010)] by using maximally entangled Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. In this paper, we present a semiquantum secret sharing protocol by using two-particle entangled states in which quantum Alice shares a secret key with two classical parties, Bob and Charlie. Classical Bob and Charlie are restricted to performing measurement in the computational basis, preparing a particle in the computational basis, or reflecting the particles. None of them can acquire the secret unless they collaborate. We also show the protocol is secure against eavesdropping.

Semiquantum key distribution using entangled states

Recently, Boyer et al. presented a novel semiquantum key distribution protocol [M. Boyer, D. Kenigsberg, and T. Mor, Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 140501 (2007)], by using four quantum states, each of which is randomly prepared by Z basis or X basis. Here we present a semiquantum key distribution protocol by using entangled states in which quantum Alice shares a secret key with classical Bob. We also show the protocol is secure against eavesdropping.

Next-to-leading QCD effect to the quark compositeness search at the LHC

Recently, the CMS and ATLAS Collaborations at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have set exclusion limits on the quark compositeness scale by comparing their data to the leading order and the scaled next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations, respectively. In this Letter, we present the exact NLO QCD corrections to the dijet production induced by the quark contact interactions. We show that as compared to the exact calculation, the scaled NLO QCD prediction adopted by the ATLAS Collaboration has overestimated the new physics effect on some direct observables by more than 30% and renders a higher limit on the quark compositeness scale. The destructive contribution from the exact NLO correction will also lower the compositeness scale limit set by the CMS Collaboration.

Evidence for electron-electron interaction in topological insulator thin films

We consider in our work high quality single crystal thin films of Bi2Se3, grown by molecular beam epitaxy, both with and without Pb doping. Our ARPES data demonstrate topological surface states with a Fermi level lying inside the bulk band gap in the Pb doped filims. Transport data show weak localization behavior, as expected for a 2D system, but a detailed analysis within the standard theoretical framework of diffusive transport shows that the temperature and magnetic field dependences of resistance cannot be reconciled in a theory that neglects inter-electron interactions. We demonstrate that an excellent account of quantum corrections to conductivity is achieved when both disorder and interaction are taken into account. These results clearly demonstrate that it is crucial to include electron electron interaction for a comprehensive understanding of diffusive transport in topological insulators.

Spectral Line-by-Line Pulse Shaping of an On-Chip Microresonator Frequency Comb

We report, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, spectral phase characterization and line-by-line pulse shaping of an optical frequency comb generated by nonlinear wave mixing in a microring resonator. Through programmable pulse shaping the comb is compressed into a train of near-transform-limited pulses of \approx 300 fs duration (intensity full width half maximum) at 595 GHz repetition rate. An additional, simple example of optical arbitrary waveform generation is presented. The ability to characterize and then stably compress the frequency comb provides new data on the stability of the spectral phase and suggests that random relative frequency shifts due to uncorrelated variations of frequency dependent phase are at or below the 100 microHertz level.

Nonmagnetic invisibility cloak with minimized scattering cross section

We propose one kind of transformation functions for nonmagnetic invisibility cloak with minimized scattering on the basis of generalized transformation. By matching the impedance at the outer surface of the cloak, the transformations with two parameters are determined. To confirm the performance of the cloak, full wave simulation based on the finite element method is carried out. Furthermore, total scattering cross section is computed to better illustrate the scattering characteristics of cloak with different parameters. In addition, based on the effective media theory, alternating layered system composed of two isotropic materials is employed to realize the cloak practically.

Factorization and resummation of s-channel single top quark production

In this paper we study the factorization and resummation of s-channel single top quark production in the Standard Model at both the Tevatron and the LHC. We show that the production cross section in the threshold limit can be factorized into a convolution of hard function, soft function and jet function via soft-collinear-effective-theory (SCET), and resummation can be performed using renormalization group equation in the momentum space resummation formalism. We find that in general, the resummation effects enhance the Next-to-Leading-Order (NLO) cross sections by about $3%-5%$ at both the Tevatron and the LHC, and significantly reduce the factorization scale dependence of the total cross section at the Tevatron, while at the LHC we find that the factorization scale dependence has not been improved, compared with the NLO results.
