The statistics of Wigner delay time in Anderson disordered systems

We numerically investigate the statistical properties of Wigner delay time in Anderson disordered 1D, 2D and quantum dot (QD) systems. The distribution of proper delay time for each conducting channel is found to be universal in 2D and QD systems for all Dyson's symmetry classes and shows a piece-wise power law behavior in the strong localized regime. Two power law behaviors were identified with asymptotical scaling ${τ^{-1.5}}$ and ${τ^{-2}}$, respectively that are independent of the number of conducting channels and Dyson's symmetry class. Two power-law regimes are separated by the relevant time scale $τ_0 \sim h/Δ$ where $Δ$ is the average level spacing. It is found that the existence of necklace states is responsible for the second power-law behavior ${τ^{-2}}$, which has an extremely small distribution probability.

Double Conformal Invariants and the Wodzicki Residue

For compact real manifolds, a new double conformal invariant is constructed using the Wodzicki residue and the $d$ operator in the framework of Connes. In the flat case, we compute this double conformal invariant, and in some special cases, we also compute this double conformal invariants. For complex manifolds, a new double conformal invariant is constructed using the Wodzicki residue and the $\bar{\partial}$ operator in the same way, and this double conformal invariant is computed in the flat case.

Quantum Andreev effect in 2D HgTe/CdTe quantum well-superconductor systems

The Andreev reflection (AR) in 2D HgTe/CdTe quantum well-superconductor hybrid systems is studied. A quantized AR with AR coefficient equal to one is predicted, which is due to the multi-Andreev reflection near the interface of the hybrid system. Importantly, this quantized AR is not only universal, i.e., independent of any system parameters and quality of the coupling of the hybrid system, it is also robust against disorder as well. As a result of this quantum Andreev effect, the conductance exhibits a quantized plateau when the external bias is less the superconductor gap.

The parity of specular Andreev reflection under mirror operation in zigzag graphene ribbon

It is known that the parity of reflection amplitude can either be even or odd under the mirror operation. Up to now, all the parities of reflection amplitude in the one-mode energy region are even under the mirror operation. In this paper, we give an example of odd parity for Andreev reflection (AR) in a three-terminal graphene-supercondutor hybrid systems. We found that the parity is even for the Andreev retroreflection (ARR) and odd for specular Andreev reflection (SAR). We attribute this remarkable phenomenon to the distinct topology of the band structure of graphene and the specular Andreev reflection involving two energy bands with different parity symmetry. As a result of odd parity of SAR, the SAR probability of a four-terminal system with two superconducting leads (two reflection interfaces) can be zero even when the system is asymmetric due to the quantum interference of two ARs.

The focusing of electron flow in a bipolar Graphene ribbon with different chiralities

The focusing of electron flow in a symmetric p-n junction (PNJ) of graphene ribbon with different chiralities is studied. Considering the PNJ with the sharp interface, in a armchair ribbon, the electron flow emitting from $(-L,0)$ in n-region can always be focused perfectly at $(L,0)$ in p-region in the whole Dirac fermion regime, i.e. in whole regime $E_0<t$ where $E_0$ is the distance between Dirac-point energy and Fermi energy and $t$ is the nearest hopping energy. For the bipolar ribbon with zigzag edge, however, the incoming electron flow in n-region is perfectly converged in p-region only in a very low energy regime with $E_0<0.05t$. Moreover, for a smooth PNJ, electrons are backscattered near PNJ, which weakens the focusing effect. But the focusing pattern still remains the same as that of the sharp PNJ. In addition, quantum oscillation in charge density occurs due to the interference between forward and backward scattering. Finally, in the presence of weak perpendicular magnetic field, charge carriers are deflected in opposite directions in the p-region and n-region. As a result, the focusing effect is smeared. The lower energy $E_0$, the easier the focusing effect is destroyed. For the high energy $E_0$ (e.g. $E_0=0.9t$), however, the focusing effect can still survive in a moderate magnetic field on order of one Tesla.

Nernst and Seebeck effect in a graphene nanoribbon

The thermoelectric power, including the Nernst and Seebeck effects, in graphene nanoribbon is studied. By using the non-equilibrium Green function combining with the tight-binding Hamiltonian, the Nernst and Seebeck coefficients are obtained. Due to the electron-hole symmetry, the Nernst coefficient is an even function of the Fermi energy while the Seebeck coefficient is an odd function regardless of the magnetic field. In the presence of a strong magnetic field, the Nernst and Seebeck coefficients are almost independent of the chirality and width of the nanoribbon, and they show peaks when the Fermi energy crosses the Landau levels. The height of $n$-th (excluding $n=0$) peak is $[\ln2/|n|]$ for the Nernst effect and is $\ln2/n$ for the Seebeck effect. For the zeroth peak, it is abnormal with height $[2\ln2]$ for the Nernst effect and the peak disappears for the Seebeck effect. When the magnetic field is turned off, however, the Nernst effect is absent and only Seebeck effect exists. In this case, the Seebeck coefficient strongly depends on the chirality of the nanoribbon. The peaks are equidistant for the nanoribbons with zigzag edge but are irregularly distributed for the armchair edge. In particular, for the insulating armchair ribbon, the Seebeck coefficient can be very large near the Dirac point. When the magnetic field varies from zero to large values, the differences among the Seebeck coefficients for different chiral ribbons gradually vanish and the nonzero value of Nernst coefficient appears first near the Dirac point then gradually extents to the whole energy region.

First-principles investigation of dynamical properties of molecular devices under a steplike pulse

We report a computationally tractable approach to first principles investigation of time-dependent current of molecular devices under a step-like pulse. For molecular devices, all the resonant states below Fermi level contribute to the time-dependent current. Hence calculation beyond wideband limit must be carried out for a quantitative analysis of transient dynamics of molecules devices. Based on the exact non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism of calculating the transient current in Ref.\onlinecite{Maciejko}, we develop two approximate schemes going beyond the wideband limit, they are all suitable for first principles calculation using the NEGF combined with density functional theory. Benchmark test has been done by comparing with the exact solution of a single level quantum dot system. Good agreement has been reached for two approximate schemes. As an application, we calculate the transient current using the first approximated formula with opposite voltage $V_L(t)=-V_R(t)$ in two molecular structures: Al-${\rm C}_{5}$-Al and Al-${\rm C}_{60}$-Al. As illustrated in these examples, our formalism can be easily implemented for real molecular devices. Importantly, our new formula has captured the essential physics of dynamical properties of molecular devices and gives the correct steady state current at $t=0$ and $t\rightarrow \infty$.

Universal Conductance Fluctuations in Mesoscopic Systems with Superconducting Leads: Beyond the Andreev Approximation

We report our investigation of the sample to sample fluctuation in transport properties of phase coherent normal metal-superconductor hybrid systems. Extensive numerical simulations were carried out for quasi-one dimensional and two dimensional systems in both square lattice (Fermi electron) as well as honeycomb lattice (Dirac electron). Our results show that when the Fermi energy is within the superconducting energy gap $Δ$, the Andreev conductance fluctuation exhibits a universal value (UCF) which is approximately two times larger than that in the normal systems. According to the random matrix theory, the electron-hole degeneracy (ehD) in the Andreev reflections (AR) plays an important role in classifying UCF. Our results confirm this. We found that in the diffusive regime there are two UCF plateaus, one corresponds to the complete electron-hole symmetry (with ehD) class and the other to conventional electron-hole conversion (ehD broken). In addition, we have studied the Andreev conductance distribution and found that for the fixed average conductance $,G>$ the Andreev conductance distribution is a universal function that depends only on the ehD. In the localized regime, our results show that ehD continues to serve as an indicator for different universal classes. Finally, if normal transport is present, i.e., Fermi energy is beyond energy gap $Δ$, the AR is suppressed drastically in the localized regime by the disorder and the ehD becomes irrelevant. As a result, the conductance distribution is that same as that of normal systems.

Factorization and resummation of t-channel single top quark production

We investigate the factorization and resummation of t-channel single top (antitop) quark production in the SM at both the Tevatron and the LHC in SCET. We find that the resummation effects decrease the NLO cross sections by about 3% at the Tevatron and about 2% at the LHC. And the resummation effects significantly reduce the factorization scale dependence of the total cross section. The transfer momentum cut dependence and other matching scale dependencies are also discussed. We also show that when our numerical results for s- and t-channel single top production at the Tevatron are combined, it is closer to the experimental result than the one reported in previous literatures.

A Multi-Interference-Channel Matrix Pair Beamformer for CDMA Systems

Matrix pair beamformer (MPB) is a promising blind beamformer which exploits the temporal signature of the signal of interest (SOI) to acquire its spatial statistical information. It does not need any knowledge of directional information or training sequences. However, the major problem of the existing MPBs is that they have serious threshold effects and the thresholds will grow as the interference power increases or even approach infinity. In particular, this issue prevails in scenarios with structured interference, such as, periodically repeated white noise, tones, or MAIs in multipath channels. In this paper, we will first present the principles for designing the projection space of the MPB which are closely correlated with the ability of suppressing structured interference and system finite sample performance. Then a multiple-interference-channel based matrix pair beamformer (MIC-MPB) for CDMA systems is developed according to the principles. In order to adapt to dynamic channels, an adaptive algorithm for the beamformer is also proposed. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed beamformer has a small and bounded threshold when the interference power increases. Performance comparisons of the MIC-MPB and the existing MPBs in various scenarios via a number of numerical examples are also presented.

Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in Graphene from Rashba and Exchange Effects

We investigate the possibility of realizing quantum anomalous Hall effect in graphene. We show that a bulk energy gap can be opened in the presence of both Rashba spin-orbit coupling and an exchange field. We calculate the Berry curvature distribution and find a non-zero Chern number for the valence bands and demonstrate the existence of gapless edge states. Inspired by this finding, we also study, by first principles method, a concrete example of graphene with Fe atoms adsorbed on top, obtaining the same result.

Using microlensed quasars to probe the structure of the Milky Way

This paper presents an investigation into the gravitational microlensing of quasars by stars and stellar remnants in the Milky Way. We present predictions for the all-sky microlensing optical depth, time-scale distributions and event rates for future large-area sky surveys. As expected, the total event rate increases rapidly with increasing magnitude limit, reflecting the fact that the number density of quasars is a steep function of magnitude. Surveys such as Pan-STARRS and LSST should be able to detect more than ten events per year, with typical event durations of around one month. Since microlensing of quasar sources suffers from fewer degeneracies than lensing of Milky Way sources, they could be used as a powerful tool for recovering the mass of the lensing object in a robust, often model-independent, manner. As a consequence, for a subset of these events it will be possible to directly `weigh' the star (or stellar remnant) that is causing the lensing signal, either through higher order microlensing effects and/or high-precision astrometric observations of the lens star (using, for example, Gaia or SIM-lite). This means that such events could play a crucial role in stellar astronomy. Given the current operational timelines for Pan-STARRS and LSST, by the end of the decade they could potentially detect up to 100 events. Although this is still too few events to place detailed constraints on Galactic models, consistency checks can be carried out and such samples could lead to exciting and unexpected discoveries.

Metropolitan all-pass and inter-city quantum communication network

We have demonstrated a metropolitan all-pass quantum communication network in field fiber for four nodes. Any two nodes of them can be connected in the network to perform quantum key distribution (QKD). An optical switching module is presented that enables arbitrary 2-connectivity among output ports. Integrated QKD terminals are worked out, which can operate either as a transmitter, a receiver, or even both at the same time. Furthermore, an additional link in another city of 60 km fiber (up to 130 km) is seamless integrated into this network based on a trusted relay architecture. On all the links, we have implemented protocol of decoy state scheme. All of necessary electrical hardware, synchronization, feedback control, network software, execution of QKD protocols are made by tailored designing, which allow a completely automatical and stable running. Our system has been put into operation in Hefei in August 2009, and publicly demonstrated during an evaluation conference on quantum network organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences on August 29, 2009. Real-time voice telephone with one-time pad encoding between any two of the five nodes (four all-pass nodes plus one additional node through relay) is successfully established in the network within 60km.

Next-to-leading order QCD predictions for graviton and photon associated production in the Large Extra Dimensions model at the LHC

We present the calculations of the complete next-to-leading order(NLO) QCD corrections to the inclusive total cross sections for the Kaluza-Klein(KK) graviton and photon associated production process $pp \to γG_{KK} + X$ in the large extra dimensions(LED) model at the LHC. We show that the NLO QCD corrections in general enhance the total cross sections and reduce the dependence of the total cross sections on the factorization and renormalization scales. When jet veto is considered, the NLO corrections reduce the total cross sections. We also calculate some important differential cross sections for this process at NLO: the missing transverse momentum distribution, the transverse momentum distribution and the pseudorapidity distribution of photon.

Electron transport through Al-ZnO-Al: an {\it ab initio} calculation

The electron transport properties of ZnO nano-wires coupled by two aluminium electrodes were studied by {\it ab initio} method based on non-equilibrium Green's function approach and density functional theory. A clearly rectifying current-voltage characteristics was observed. It was found that the contact interfaces between Al-O and Al-Zn play important roles in the charge transport at low bias voltage and give very asymmetric I-V characteristics. When the bias voltage increases, the negative differential resistance occurs at negative bias voltage. The charge accumulation was calculated and its behavior was found to be well correlated with the I-V characteristics. We have also calculated the electrochemical capacitance which exhibits three plateaus at different bias voltages which may have potential device application.
