Observation of Chern insulator in crystalline ABCA-tetralayer graphene with spin-orbit coupling

Degeneracies in multilayer graphene, including spin, valley, and layer degrees of freedom, are susceptible to Coulomb interactions and can result into rich broken-symmetry states. In this work, we report a ferromagnetic state in charge neutral ABCA-tetralayer graphene driven by proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling from adjacent WSe2. The ferromagnetic state is further identified as a Chern insulator with Chern number of 4, and its Hall resistance reaches 78% and 100% quantization of h/4e2 at zero and 0.4 tesla, respectively. Three broken-symmetry insulating states, layer-antiferromagnet, Chern insulator and layer-polarized insulator and their transitions can be continuously tuned by the vertical displacement field. Remarkably, the magnetic order of the Chern insulator can be switched by three knobs, including magnetic field, electrical doping, and vertical displacement field.

Search for ER and/or NR-like dark matter signals with the especially low background liquid helium TPCs

In the Dark Matter (DM) direct detection community, the absence of convincing signals has become a "new normal" for decades. Among other possibilities, the "new normal" might indicate that DM-matter interactions could generate not only the hypothetical NR (Nuclear Recoil) events but also the ER (Electron Recoil) ones, which have often been tagged as backgrounds historically. Further, we argue that ER and NR-like DM signals could co-exist in a DM detector's same dataset. So in total, there would be three scenarios we can search for DM signals: (i) ER excess only, (ii) NR excess only, and (iii) ER and NR excesses combined. To effectively identify any possible DM signal under the three scenarios, a DM detector should (a) have the minimum ER and NR backgrounds and (b) be capable of discriminating ER events from NR ones. Accordingly, we introduce the newly established project, ALETHEIA, which implements liquid helium-filled TPCs (Time Projection Chambers) in hunting for DM. Thanks to the nearly single-digit number of ER and NR backgrounds on 1 ton*yr exposure, presumably, the ALETHEIA detectors could identify any form of DM-induced excess in its ROI (Research Of Interest). As far as we know, ALETHEIA is the first DM direct detection experiment claiming such an inclusive search; conventional detectors search DM mainly on the "ER excess only" and/or the "NR excess only" channel, not the "ER and NR excesses combined" channel.

Conceptual design and progress of transmitting $\sim$ MV DC HV into 4 K LHe detectors

A dual-phase TPC (Time Projection Chamber) is more advanced in characterizing an event than a single-phase one because it can, in principle, reconstruct the 3D (X-Y-Z) image of the event, while a single-phase detector can only show a 2D (X-Y) picture. As a result, more enriched physics is expected for a dual-phase detector than a single-phase one. However, to build such a detector, DC HV (High Voltage) must be delivered into the chamber (to have a static electric field), which is a challenging task, especially for an LHe detector due to the extremely low temperature, $\sim$ 4 K, and the very high voltage, $\sim$ MV (Million Volts). This article introduces a convincing design for transmitting $\sim$ MV DC into a 4 K LHe detector. We also report the progress of manufacturing a 100 kV DC feedthrough capable of working at 4 K. Surprisingly, we realized that the technology we developed here might be a valuable reference to the scientists and engineers aiming to build residential bases on the Moon or Mars.

Data-Driven Superstabilization of Linear Systems under Quantization

This paper focuses on the stabilization and regulation of linear systems affected by quantization in state-transition data and actuated input. The observed data are composed of tuples of current state, input, and the next state's interval ranges based on sensor quantization. Using an established characterization of input-logarithmically-quantized stabilization based on robustness to sector-bounded uncertainty, we formulate a nonconservative infinite-dimensional linear program that enforces superstabilization of all possible consistent systems under assumed priors. We solve this problem by posing a pair of exponentially-scaling linear programs, and demonstrate the success of our method on example quantized systems.

Generation of intense cylindrical vector beams by Faraday effect in plasma

Cylindrical vector (CV) beams, whose polarizations are cylindrically symmetric, have recently been widely applied in high energy density physics such as electron acceleration and intense spatiotemporal optical vortices generation. Thermal-damage-resistant plasma optics are expected to generate intense CV beams. In this work, based on the Faraday effect, we propose a method that can directly convert an intense linearly/circularly polarized Gaussian beam into a CV/vortex beam by setting up an azimuthally distributed axial magnetic field in the plasma. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate good conversion efficiency, which offers a new degree of freedom for manipulating high-power laser pulses and paves the way for further studies on ultra-strong vector beams. In addition, our work reveals a new possible source of photon orbital angular momentum related to magnetized plasma in astrophysics and space physics.

Interaction-driven spontaneous broken-symmetry insulator and metals in ABCA tetralayer graphene

Interactions among charge carriers in graphene can lead to the spontaneous breaking of multiple degeneracies. When increasing the number of graphene layers following rhombohedral stacking, the dominant role of Coulomb interactions becomes pronounced due to the significant reduction in kinetic energy. In this study, we employ phonon-polariton assisted near-field infrared imaging to determine the stacking orders of tetralayer graphene devices. Through quantum transport measurements, we observe a range of spontaneous broken-symmetry states and their transitions, which can be finely tuned by carrier density n and electric displacement field D. Specifically, we observe a layer antiferromagnetic insulator at n = D = 0 with a gap of approximately 15 meV. Increasing D allows for a continuous phase transition from a layer antiferromagnetic insulator to a layer polarized insulator. By simultaneously tuning n and D, we observe isospin polarized metals, including spin-valley-polarized and spin-polarized metals. These transitions are associated with changes in Fermi surface topology and are consistent with the Stoner criteria. Our findings highlight the efficient fabrication of specially stacked multilayer graphene devices and demonstrate that crystalline multilayer graphene is an ideal platform for investigating a wide range of broken symmetries driven by Coulomb interactions.

Deep learning inter-atomic potential for irradiation damage in 3C-SiC

We developed and validated an accurate inter-atomic potential for molecular dynamics simulation in cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) using a deep learning framework combined with smooth Ziegler-Biersack-Littmark (ZBL) screened nuclear repulsion potential interpolation. Comparisons of multiple important properties were made between the deep-learning potential and existing analytical potentials which are most commonly used in molecular dynamics simulations of 3C-SiC. Not only for equilibrium properties but also for significant properties of radiation damage such as defect formation energies and threshold displacement energies, our deep-learning potential gave closer predictions to DFT criterion than analytical potentials. The deep-learning potential framework solved the long-standing dilemma that traditional empirical potentials currently applied in 3C-SiC radiation damage simulations gave large disparities with each other and were inconsistent with ab-initio calculations. A more realistic depiction of the primary irradiation damage process in 3C-SiC can be given and the accuracy of classical molecular dynamics simulation for cubic silicon carbide can be expected to the level of quantum mechanics.

Dynamic Structural Brain Network Construction by Hierarchical Prototype Embedding GCN using T1-MRI

Constructing structural brain networks using T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (T1-MRI) presents a significant challenge due to the lack of direct regional connectivity information. Current methods with T1-MRI rely on predefined regions or isolated pretrained location modules to obtain atrophic regions, which neglects individual specificity. Besides, existing methods capture global structural context only on the whole-image-level, which weaken correlation between regions and the hierarchical distribution nature of brain connectivity. We hereby propose a novel dynamic structural brain network construction method based on T1-MRI, which can dynamically localize critical regions and constrain the hierarchical distribution among them for constructing dynamic structural brain network. Specifically, we first cluster spatially-correlated channel and generate several critical brain regions as prototypes. Further, we introduce a contrastive loss function to constrain the prototypes distribution, which embed the hierarchical brain semantic structure into the latent space. Self-attention and GCN are then used to dynamically construct hierarchical correlations of critical regions for brain network and explore the correlation, respectively. Our method is evaluated on ADNI-1 and ADNI-2 databases for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) conversion prediction, and acheive the state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance. Suppressing stimulated Raman side-scattering by vector light

Recently, the verification of stimulated Raman side-scattering (SRSS) in different laser inertial confinement fusion ignition schemes poses an underlying risk of SRSS on ignition. In this paper, we propose a method to use the non-uniform polarization nature of vector light to suppress SRSS and give an additional threshold condition determined by the parameter of vector light. For SRSS at 90 degrees, where the scattered electromagnetic wave travels perpendicular to the density profile, the polarization variation of the pump will change the wave vector of scattered light, thereby reducing the growth length and preventing the scattered electromagnetic wave from growing. This suppressive scheme is verified through three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Our illustrative simulation results demonstrate that for linearly polarized Gaussian light, the SRSS signal occurs in the 90-degree direction fiercely. At the same time, for the vector light, there is few SRSS signal even if the condition dramatically exceeds the threshold. Furthermore, we discuss the impact of vector light on stimulated Raman and Brillouin backscattering, and two-plasma decay.

Efficient generation of axial magnetic field by multiple laser beams with twisted pointing directions

Strong laser-driven magnetic fields are crucial for high-energy-density physics and laboratory astrophysics research, but generation of axial multi-kT fields remains a challenge. The difficulty comes from the inability of a conventional linearly polarized laser beam to induce the required azimuthal current or, equivalently, angular momentum (AM). We show that several laser beams can overcome this difficulty. Our three-dimensional kinetic simulations demonstrate that a twist in their pointing directions {enables them to carry orbital AM and transfer it to the plasma, thus generating a hot electron population carrying AM needed to sustain the magnetic field.} The resulting multi-kT field occupies a volume that is tens of thousands of cubic microns and it persists on a ps time scale. The mechanism can be realized for a wide range of laser intensities and pulse durations. Our scheme is well-suited for implementation using {multi-kJ PW-class lasers, because, by design, they have multiple beamlets and because the scheme requires only linear-polarization.

Robust Data-Driven Safe Control using Density Functions

This paper presents a tractable framework for data-driven synthesis of robustly safe control laws. Given noisy experimental data and some priors about the structure of the system, the goal is to synthesize a state feedback law such that the trajectories of the closed loop system are guaranteed to avoid an unsafe set even in the presence of unknown but bounded disturbances (process noise). The main result of the paper shows that for polynomial dynamics, this problem can be reduced to a tractable convex optimization by combining elements from polynomial optimization and the theorem of alternatives. This optimization provides both a rational control law and a density function safety certificate. These results are illustrated with numerical examples.

ProxyBO: Accelerating Neural Architecture Search via Bayesian Optimization with Zero-cost Proxies

Designing neural architectures requires immense manual efforts. This has promoted the development of neural architecture search (NAS) to automate the design. While previous NAS methods achieve promising results but run slowly, zero-cost proxies run extremely fast but are less promising. Therefore, it is of great potential to accelerate NAS via those zero-cost proxies. The existing method has two limitations, which are unforeseeable reliability and one-shot usage. To address the limitations, we present ProxyBO, an efficient Bayesian optimization (BO) framework that utilizes the zero-cost proxies to accelerate neural architecture search. We apply the generalization ability measurement to estimate the fitness of proxies on the task during each iteration and design a novel acquisition function to combine BO with zero-cost proxies based on their dynamic influence. Extensive empirical studies show that ProxyBO consistently outperforms competitive baselines on five tasks from three public benchmarks. Concretely, ProxyBO achieves up to 5.41x and 3.86x speedups over the state-of-the-art approaches REA and BRP-NAS.

Laser pulse shape designer for direct-drive inertial confinement fusion

A pulse shape designer for direct drive inertial confinement fusion has been developed, it aims at high compression of the fusion fuel while keeping hydrodynamics instability within tolerable level. Fast linear analysis on implosion instability enables the designer to fully scan the vast pulse configuration space at a practical computational cost, machine learning helps to summarize pulse performance into an implicit scaling metric that promotes the pulse shape evolution. The designer improves its credibility by incorporating various datasets including extra high-precision simulations or experiments. When tested on the double-cone ignition scheme [J. Zhang et al, Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A. 378.2184 (2020)], optimized pulses reach the assembly requirements, show significant imprint mitigation and adiabatic shaping capability, and have the potential to achieve better implosion performance in real experiments. This designer serves as an efficient alternative to traditional empirical pulse shape tuning procedure, reduces workload and time consumption. The designer can be used to quickly explore the unknown parameter space for new direct-drive schemes, assists design iteration and reduces experiment risk.

Coating $μ$m TPB on a cylindrical detector and studying the sample films being cooled to LN and LHe temperatures

ALETHEIA is a newly established dark matter direct detection project that aims at hunting for low-mass WIMPs. TPB is widely implemented in liquid helium and argon experiments to shift VUV photons to visible light. We first report that we have successfully coated $\sim 3 ~μ$m TPB on the inner walls of a 10-cm cylindrical PTFE detector; we split the coating process into two steps to have all of the surfaces being coated with the same thickness; three independent methods were applied to figure out the thickness of the TPB coating layers, and consistent results were obtained. Second, with an SEM machine, we scanned the surface of TPB coating sample films exposed to different cryogenic temperatures. The first group of sample layers were immersed into a liquid nitrogen dewar for forty hours, the second group samples were cooled to 4.5 K for three hours, and the third group stayed at room temperature after coating. The SEM-scanned images of the sample films barely show any noticeable difference.

Generating axial magnetic fields via two plasmon decay driven by a twisted laser

We propose a new way of axial magnetic fields generation in a non-relativistic laser intensity regime by using a twisted light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) to stimulate two-plasmon decay (TPD) in a plasma. The growth of TPD driven by an OAM light in a Laguerre-Gauss (LG) mode is investigated through three dimensional fluid simulations and theory. A theory based on the assumption that the electron plasma waves (EPWs) are locally driven by a number of local plane-wave lasers predicts the maximum growth rate proportional to the peak amplitude of the pump laser field and is verified by the simulations. The OAM conservation during its transportation from the laser to the TPD daughter EWPs is shown by both the theory and the simulations. The theory predicts generation of ~40T axial magnetic fields through the OAM absorption via TPD, which has perspective applications in the field of high energy density physics.

The trace of uniform hypergraphs with application to Estrada index

In this paper we investigate the traces of the adjacency tensor of hypergraphs (simply called the traces of hypergraphs). We give new expressions for the traces of hypertrees and linear unicyclic hypergraphs by the weight function assigned to their connected sub-hypergraphs, and provide some perturbation results for the traces of a hypergraph with cut vertices. As applications we determine the unique hypertree with maximum Estrada index among all hypertrees with fixed number of edges and perfect matchings, and the unique unicyclic hypergraph with maximum Estrada index among all unicyclic hypergraph with fixed number of edges and girth $3$.

Plasma zone plate for high-power lasers driven by a Laguerre-Gaussian beam

Plasma-based optics has emerged as an attractive alternative to traditional solid-state optics for high-power laser manipulation due to its higher damage threshold. In this work, we propose a plasma zone plate (PZP) driven by the ponderomotive force of a Laguerre-Gaussian beam when it irradiates an underdense plasma slice. We formulate the theory of the PZP and demonstrate its formation and function of focusing high-power lasers using particle-in-cell simulations. The proposed scheme may offer a new method to focus and manipulate high-power lasers with plasma-based optics

Consensusless Blockchain: A Promising High-Performance Blockchain without Consensus

Consensus is unnecessary when the truth is available. In this paper, we present a new perspective of rebuilding the blockchain without consensus. When the consensus phase is eliminated from a blockchain, transactions could be canonized quickly using a well-defined universal rule without consuming hashing power. Thus, the transactions per second(TPS) metric of such the consensusless blockchain can be largely boosted. Although consensus blockchain is promising, several technical challenges are also crucial. For example, double-spending attacks and frequent forking events must be prevented, the credit of block's minting must be carefully defined, and etc. To address those technical challenges, we propose several solutions for our consensusless blockchain (CB), including a naive monotonic scoring mechanism to calculate the ranking of each block in the chain, and a two-stage witness mechanism to add new blocks. The proposed CB chain is promising to offer a simplified and equipment-cheap infrastructure for rich real-world decentralized applications.
