Taking a Language Detour: How International Migrants Speaking a Minority Language Seek COVID-Related Information in Their Host Countries

Information seeking is crucial for people's self-care and wellbeing in times of public crises. Extensive research has investigated empirical understandings as well as technical solutions to facilitate information seeking by domestic citizens of affected regions. However, limited knowledge is established to support international migrants who need to survive a crisis in their host countries. The current paper presents an interview study with two cohorts of Chinese migrants living in Japan (N=14) and the United States (N=14). Participants reflected on their information seeking experiences during the COVID pandemic. The reflection was supplemented by two weeks of self-tracking where participants maintained records of their COVIDrelated information seeking practice. Our data indicated that participants often took language detours, or visits to Mandarin resources for information about the COVID outbreak in their host countries. They also made strategic use of the Mandarin information to perform selective reading, cross-checking, and contextualized interpretation of COVID-related information in Japanese or English. While such practices enhanced participants' perceived effectiveness of COVID-related information gathering and sensemaking, they disadvantaged people through sometimes incognizant ways. Further, participants lacked the awareness or preference to review migrant-oriented information that was issued by the host country's public authorities despite its availability. Building upon these findings, we discussed solutions to improve international migrants' COVID-related information seeking in their non-native language and cultural environment. We advocated inclusive crisis infrastructures that would engage people with diverse levels of local language fluency, information literacy, and experience in leveraging public services.

Introduction to a low-mass dark matter project, ALETHEIA: A Liquid hElium Time projection cHambEr In dArk matter

Dark Matter (DM) is one of the most critical questions to be understood and answered in fundamental physics today. Plenty of astronomical and cosmological observations have already pinned down that DM exists in the Universe, the Milky Way, and the Solar System. However, understanding DM with the language of elementary physics is still in progress. DM direct detection tests the interactive cross-section between galactic DM particles and an underground detector's nucleons. WIMPs is the most discussed DM candidate. After decades of hunting, a convincing WIMPs signal is still at large. Relatively, the low-mass WIMPs region ($\sim$ 10 MeV/c$^2$ - 10 GeV/c$^2$) has not been fully exploited compared to high-mass WIMPs ($\sim$ 10 GeV/c$^2$ - 10 TeV/c$^2$). By filling the arguably cleanest bulk material, LHe, into the arguably most competitive detector in the field, TPCs, ALETHEIA is supposed to achieve an extremely low-level background; therefore, to help answer one of the most pressing physical questions today: the nature of DM. In this paper, we briefly go through the physics motivation of low-mass DM, the ALETHEIA detector's design, possible analysis channels available for DM searches, and the progress we have made since the project launched in the summer of 2020.

Explicit high-order symplectic integrators of coupled Schrodinger equations for pump-probe systems

Two-beam coupling within the field of nonlinear optics, which transfers energy from one light beam to the other under certain conditions, has received considerable attention in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and plasma optics. To evaluate the coupling dynamics precisely, we modeled this process with full-wave coupled Schrodinger equations (CSEs) and a nonlinear refractive index. We found that the CSEs constituted a Hamiltonian system and proposed an arbitrary higher-order explicit symplectic algorithm to solve the CSEs numerically. The numerical results given by the developed BEAM code showed a good agreement with those from particle-in-cell simulations, which demonstrated the validity of the model and algorithm. The model and numerical algorithm presented in this work can be extended to more nonlinear optical interactions described by coupled-wave equations.

High-ordered spectral characterization of unicyclic graphs

In this paper we will apply the tensor and its traces to investigate the spectral characterization of unicyclic graphs. Let $G$ be a graph and $G^m$ be the $m$-th power (hypergraph) of $G$. The spectrum of $G$ is referring to its adjacency matrix, and the spectrum of $G^m$ is referring to its adjacency tensor. The graph $G$ is called determined by high-ordered spectra (DHS for short) if, whenever $H$ is a graph such that $H^m$ is cospectral with $G^m$ for all $m$, then $H$ is isomorphic to $G$. In this paper we first give formulas for the traces of the power of unicyclic graphs, and then provide some high-ordered cospectral invariants of unicyclic graphs. We prove that a class of unicyclic graphs with cospectral mates is DHS, and give two examples of infinitely many pairs of cospectral unicyclic graphs but with different high-ordered spectra.

The trace and Estrada index of uniform hypergraphs with cut vertices

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be an $m$-uniform hypergraph, and let $\mathcal{A}(\mathcal{H})$ be the adjacency tensor of $\mathcal{H}$ which can be viewed as a system of homogeneous polynomials of degree $m-1$. Morozov and Shakirov generalized the traces of linear systems to nonlinear homogeneous polynomial systems and obtained explicit formulas for multidimensional resultants. Sun, Zhou and Bu introduced the Estrada index of uniform hypergraphs which is closely related to the traces of their adjacency tensors. In this paper we give formulas for the traces of $\mathcal{A}(\mathcal{H})$ when $\mathcal{H}$ contains cut vertices, and obtain results on the traces and Estrada index when $\mathcal{H}$ is perturbed under local changes. We prove that among all hypertrees with fixed number of edges, the hyperpath is the unique one with minimum Estrada index and the hyperstar is the unique one with maximum Estrada index.

Optimizing doping parameters of target to enhance direct-drive implosion

Direct-drive is an important approach to achieving the ignition of inertial confinement fusion. To enhance implosion performance while keeping the risk of hydrodynamic instability at a low level, we have designed a procedure to optimize the parameters of the target doped with mid- or high-$Z$ atoms. In the procedure, a one-dimensional implosion can be automatically simulated, while its implosion performance and high-dimensional instability are integrally evaluated at the same time. To find the optimal doping parameters, the procedure is performed in the framework of global optimization algorithm, where we have used the particle swarm optimization in the current work. In the optimization, the opacity of mixture materials is quickly obtained by using an interpolation method, showing only a slight difference from the data of TOPS, which is an online doping program of Los Alamos National Laboratory. To test the procedure, optimization has been carried out for the CH ablator in the double cone ignition scheme [Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A. 378.2184 (2020)] by doping with Si and Cl. Both one- and two-dimensional simulations show that doping with either Si or Cl can efficiently mitigate the instability during the acceleration phase and does not result in significant degradation of the peak areal density. The results from one- and two-dimensional simulations qualitatively match with each other, demonstrating the validity of our optimization procedure.

Time-resolved spectrum output from a grating spectrometer

Time-resolved spectra are often recorded in optical Thomson scattering experiments of laser-produced plasmas. In this essay, the meaning of time-resolved spectra output from a grating spectrometer is examined. Our results show that the recorded signal is indeed the convolution of the response function of dispersion element and the product of instant local dynamic form factor and electron density.

Temporal Attentive Alignment for Large-Scale Video Domain Adaptation

Although various image-based domain adaptation (DA) techniques have been proposed in recent years, domain shift in videos is still not well-explored. Most previous works only evaluate performance on small-scale datasets which are saturated. Therefore, we first propose two large-scale video DA datasets with much larger domain discrepancy: UCF-HMDB_full and Kinetics-Gameplay. Second, we investigate different DA integration methods for videos, and show that simultaneously aligning and learning temporal dynamics achieves effective alignment even without sophisticated DA methods. Finally, we propose Temporal Attentive Adversarial Adaptation Network (TA3N), which explicitly attends to the temporal dynamics using domain discrepancy for more effective domain alignment, achieving state-of-the-art performance on four video DA datasets (e.g. 7.9% accuracy gain over "Source only" from 73.9% to 81.8% on "HMDB --> UCF", and 10.3% gain on "Kinetics --> Gameplay"). The code and data are released at http://github.com/cmhungsteve/TA3N.

Image Captioning with Integrated Bottom-Up and Multi-level Residual Top-Down Attention for Game Scene Understanding

Image captioning has attracted considerable attention in recent years. However, little work has been done for game image captioning which has some unique characteristics and requirements. In this work we propose a novel game image captioning model which integrates bottom-up attention with a new multi-level residual top-down attention mechanism. Firstly, a lower-level residual top-down attention network is added to the Faster R-CNN based bottom-up attention network to address the problem that the latter may lose important spatial information when extracting regional features. Secondly, an upper-level residual top-down attention network is implemented in the caption generation network to better fuse the extracted regional features for subsequent caption prediction. We create two game datasets to evaluate the proposed model. Extensive experiments show that our proposed model outperforms existing baseline models.

Magnetized Gas Collimation of Interstellar Outflow Scaled by Laser-produced Plasma

Young stellar objects/planetary nebula outflow anisotropies usually involve wind-wind interactions and magnetic collimation, but detailed structures of wind and magnetic fields inside collimation region remain undetermined. We numerically investigated its laboratory counterpart, based on poloidal field collimation in magnetocentrifugal launching model. Our analog consist of fast wind: Aluminum plasma generated by laser and magnetized ambient: molecular Helium and B=5-60 Tesla embedded field. Elevating magnetic field strength or decreasing gas density can alter expansion morphology, from sphere to prolonged cavity and ultimately to collimated jet. Outflow patterns can be quantitatively predicted based on the knowledge of its surroundings through a set of external Mach numbers. We conclude that such mixed gas and magnetic field dynamics are consistent with astronomical observations of protostars and planetary nebulae in certain evolution stages, and here provide a scalable framework allowing fitting of flow-field structures in astronomical unresolved regions by assuming their possible geometries on a repeatable laboratory platform.

Hand-tremor frequency estimation in videos

We focus on the problem of estimating human hand-tremor frequency from input RGB video data. Estimating tremors from video is important for non-invasive monitoring, analyzing and diagnosing patients suffering from motor-disorders such as Parkinson's disease. We consider two approaches for hand-tremor frequency estimation: (a) a Lagrangian approach where we detect the hand at every frame in the video, and estimate the tremor frequency along the trajectory; and (b) an Eulerian approach where we first localize the hand, we subsequently remove the large motion along the movement trajectory of the hand, and we use the video information over time encoded as intensity values or phase information to estimate the tremor frequency. We estimate hand tremors on a new human tremor dataset, TIM-Tremor, containing static tasks as well as a multitude of more dynamic tasks, involving larger motion of the hands. The dataset has 55 tremor patient recordings together with: associated ground truth accelerometer data from the most affected hand, RGB video data, and aligned depth data.

First Integrated Implosion Experiment of Three-Axis Cylindrical Hohlraum at the SGIII Laser Facility

The first integrated implosion experiment of three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH) was accomplished at the SGIII laser facility. 24 laser beams of the SGIII laser facility were carefully chosen and quasi-symmetrically injected into the TACH, in which a highly symmetric radiation filed was generated with a peak radiation temperature of ~190eV. Driven by the radiation field, the neutron yield of a deuterium gas filled capsule reached ~1e9, and the corresponding yield over clean (YOC) was ~40% for a convergence ratio (Cr) of ~17. The X-ray self-emission image of imploded capsule cores was nearly round, and the backscatter fraction of laser beams was less than 1.25%. This experiment preliminarily demonstrated the major performance of TACH, such as the robustness of symmetry, and a laser plasma instability (LPI) behavior similar to that of the outer ring of traditional cylindrical hohlraum.

Non-rigid image registration using spatially region-weighted correlation ratio and GPU-acceleration

Objective: Non-rigid image registration with high accuracy and efficiency is still a challenging task for medical image analysis. In this work, we present the spatially region-weighted correlation ratio (SRWCR) as a novel similarity measure to improve the registration performance. Methods: SRWCR is rigorously deduced from a three-dimension joint probability density function combining the intensity channels with an extra spatial information channel. SRWCR estimates the optimal functional dependence between the intensities for each spatial bin, in which the spatial distribution modeled by a cubic B-spline function is used to differentiate the contribution of voxels. We also analytically derive the gradient of SRWCR with respect to the transformation parameters and optimize it using a quasi-Newton approach. Furthermore, we propose a GPU-based parallel mechanism to accelerate the computation of SRWCR and its derivatives. Results: The experiments on synthetic images, public 4-D thoracic computed tomography (CT) dataset, retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) data, and clinical CT and positron emission tomography (PET) images confirm that SRWCR significantly outperforms some state-of-the-art techniques such as spatially encoded mutual information and Robust PaTch-based cOrrelation Ration. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the advantages of SRWCR in tackling the practical difficulties due to distinct intensity changes, serious speckle noise, or different imaging modalities. Significance: The proposed registration framework might be more reliable to correct the non-rigid deformations and more potential for clinical applications.

A novel three-axis cylindrical hohlraum designed for inertial confinement fusion ignition

A novel ignition hohlraum for indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion is proposed, which is named as three-axis cylindrical hohlraum (TACH). TACH is a kind of 6 laser entrance holes (LEHs) hohlraum, which is made of three cylindrical hohlraums orthogonally jointed. Laser beams are injected through every entrance hole with the same incident angle of 55°. The view-factor simulation result shows that the time-varying drive asymmetry of TACH is no more than 1.0% in the whole drive pulse period without any supplementary technology such as beam phasing etc. Its coupling efficiency of TACH is close to that of 6 LEHs spherical hohlraum with corresponding size. Its plasma-filling time is close to typical cylindrical ignition hohlraum. Its laser plasma interaction has as low backscattering as the outer cone of the cylindrical ignition hohlraum. Therefore, the proposed hohlraum provides a competitive candidate for ignition hohlraum.

Visible Cherenkov radiation can offers a method of the measurement of the velocity of a charged particles. The angular width of the radiation is important since it determines the resolution of the velocity measurement. In this article, the angular width of Cherenkov radiation with inclusion of multiple scattering is calculated through the path-integral method, and and the analytical expressions are presented. The condition that multiple scattering process dominates the angular distribution is obtained.

Numerical simulation and experimental study of PbWO4/EPDM and Bi2WO6/EPDM for the shielding of γrays

The MCNP5 code was employed to simulate the γray shielding capacity of tungstate composites. The experimental results were applied to verify the applicability of the Monte Carlo program. PbWO4 and Bi2WO6 were prepared and added into ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) to obtain the composites, which were tested in the γray shielding. Both the theoretical simulation and experiments were carefully chosen and well designed. The results of the two methods were found to be highly consistent. In addition, the conditions during the numerical simulation were optimized and double-layer γray shielding systems were studied. It was found that the γ-ray shielding performance can be influenced not only by the material thickness ratio but also by the arrangement of the composites.

Arbitrary manipulation of nonlinear optical processes

Nonlinear optical processes are governed by the relative-phase relationships among the relevant electromagnetic fields in these processes. In this Letter, we describe the physics of arbitrary manipulation of nonlinear optical processes (AMNOP) by artificial control of relative phases. As a typical example, we show freely designable optical-frequency conversions to extreme spectral regions, mid-infrared and vacuum-ultraviolet, with near-unity quantum efficiencies. Furthermore, we show that such optical-frequency conversions can be realized by using a surprisingly simple technology where transparent plates are placed in a nonlinear optical medium and their positions and thicknesses are adjusted precisely. In a numerical experiment assuming practically applicable parameters in detail, we demonstrate a single-frequency tunable laser that covers the whole vacuum-ultraviolet spectral range of 120 to 200 nm.

Thomson scattering from high-temperature high-density plasmas revisited

The theory of Thomson scattering from high-temperature high-density plasmas is revisited from the view point of plasma fluctuation theory. Three subtle effects are addressed with a unified theory. The first is the correction of the first order of $v/c$, where $v$ is the particle velocity and $c$ is the light speed, the second is the plasma dielectric effect, and the third is the finite scattering volume effect. When the plasma density is high, the first effect is very significant in inferring plasma parameters from the scattering spectra off electron plasma waves. The second is also be notable but less significant. When the size of the scattering volume is much larger than the probe wavelength, the third is negligible.
