Color entanglement effect in collinear twist-3 factorization

We study color entanglement effect for T-odd cases in collinear twist-3 factorization. As an example, we compute the transverse single spin asymmetry for direct photon production in pp collisions in pure collinear twist-3 approach. By analyzing the gauge link structure of the collinear gluon distribution on unpolarized target side, we demonstrate how color entanglement effect arises in the presence of the additional gluon attachment from polarized projectile. The result is consistent with that obtained from a hybrid approach calculation.

Measurement of Surface Acoustic Wave Resonances in Ferroelectric Domains by Microwave Microscopy

Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) resonances were imaged within a closed domain in the ferroelectric LiTaO$_3$ via scanning Microwave Impedance Microscopy (MIM). The MIM probe is used for both SAW generation and measurement, allowing contact-less measurement within a mesoscopic structure. Measurements taken over a range of microwave frequencies are consistent with a constant acoustic velocity, demonstrating the acoustic nature of the measurement.

Interaction-driven Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in Halogenated Hematite Nanosheets

Based on first-principle calculations and $k\cdot p$ model analysis, we show that the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulating phase can be realized in the functionalized hematite (or $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$) nanosheet and the obtained topological gap can be as large as $\sim$300 meV. The driving force of the topological phase is the strong interactions of localized Fe 3$d$ electrons operating on the quadratic band crossing point of the non-interacting band structures. Such interaction driven QAH insulator is different from the single particle band topology mechanism in experimentally realized QAH insulator, the magnetic ion doped topological insulator film. Depending on the thickness of the nanosheet, topological insulating state with helical-like or chiral edge states can be realized. Our work provides a realization of the interaction-driven QAH insulating state in a realistic material.

Single spin asymmetries in forward p-p/A collisions revisited: the role of color entanglement

We calculate the single transverse spin asymmetries(SSA) for forward inclusive particle production in pp and pA collisions using a hybrid approach. It is shown that the Sivers type contribution to the SSA drops out due to color entanglement effect, whereas the fragmentation contribution to the spin asymmetry is not affected by color entanglement effect. This finding offers a natural solution for the sign mismatch problem.

Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distributions at Small-x

We study the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions at small-x in a consistent framework that takes into account the TMD evolution and small-x evolution simultaneously. The small-x evolution effects are included by computing the TMDs at appropriate scales in terms of the dipole scattering amplitudes, which obey the relevant Balitsky-Kovchegov equation. Meanwhile, the TMD evolution is obtained by resumming the Collins-Soper type large logarithms emerged from the calculations in small-x formalism into Sudakov factors.

Noether's Problem for Some Semidirect Products

Let $k$ be a field, $G$ be a finite group, $k(x(g):g\in G)$ be the rational function field with the variables $x(g)$ where $g\in G$. The group $G$ acts on $k(x(g):g\in G)$ by $k$-automorphisms where $h\cdot x(g)=x(hg)$ for all $h,g\in G$. Let $k(G)$ be the fixed field defined by $k(G):=k(x(g):g\in G)^G=\{f\in k(x(g):g\in G): h\cdot f=f$ for all $h\in G\}$. Noether's problem asks whether the fixed field $k(G)$ is rational (= purely transcendental) over $k$. Let $m$ and $n$ be positive integers and assume that there is an integer $t$ such that $t\in (\bm{Z}/m\bm{Z})^\times$ is of order $n$. Define a group $G_{m,n}:=\langleσ,τ:σ^m=τ^n=1,τ^{-1}στ=σ^t\rangle$ $\simeq C_m \rtimes C_n$. We will find a sufficient condition to guarantee that $k(G)$ is rational over $k$. As a result, it is shown that, for any positive integer $n$, the set $S:=\{p: p$ is a prime number such that $\bm{C}(G_{p,n})$ is rational over $\bm{C} \}$ is of positive Dirichlet density; in particular, $S$ is an infinite set.

Transition between strong and weak topological insulator in ZrTe$_5$ and HfTe$_5$

ZrTe$_5$ and HfTe$_5$ have attracted increasingly attention recently since the theoretical prediction of being topological insulators (TIs). However, subsequent works show many contradictions about their topological nature.Three possible phases, i.e. strong TI, weak TI, and Dirac semi-metal, have been observed in different experiments until now. Essentially whether ZrTe$_5$ or HfTe$_5$ has a band gap or not is still a question. Here, we present detailed first-principles calculations on the electronic and topological properties of ZrTe$_5$ and HfTe$_5$ on variant volumes and clearly demonstrate the topological phase transition from a strong TI, going through an intermediate Dirac semi-metal phase, then to a weak TI when the crystal expands. Our work might give a unified explain about the divergent experimental results and propose the crucial clue to further experiments to elucidate the topological nature of these materials.

Suppression of maximal linear gluon polarization in angular asymmetries

We perform a phenomenological analysis of the $\cos 2 ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in virtual photon plus jet production induced by the linear polarization of gluons in unpolarized $pA$ collisions. Although the linearly polarized gluon distribution becomes maximal at small $x$, TMD evolutionleads to a Sudakov suppression of the asymmetry with increasing invariant mass of the $γ^*$-jet pair. Employing a small-$x$ model input distribution, the asymmetry is found to be strongly suppressed under TMD evolution, but still remains sufficiently large to be measurable in the typical kinematical region accessible at RHIC or LHC at moderate photon virtuality, whereas it is expected to be negligible in $Z/W$-jet pair production at LHC. We point out the optimal kinematics for RHIC and LHC studies, in order to expedite the first experimental studies of the linearly polarized gluon distribution through this process. We further argue that this is a particularly clean process to test the $k_t$-resummation formalism in the small-$x$ regime.

Quantum anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic transition metal halides

The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is a novel topological spintronic phenomenon arising from inherent magnetization and spin-orbit coupling. Various theoretical and experimental efforts have been devoted in search of robust intrinsic QAH insulators. However, up to now, it has only been observed in Cr or V doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3 film in experiments with very low working temperature. Based on the successful synthesis of transition metal halides, we use first-principles calculations to predict that RuI3 monolayer is an intrinsic ferromagnetic QAH insulator with a topologically nontrivial global band gap of 11 meV. This topologically nontrivial band gap at the Fermi level is due to its crystal symmetry, thus the QAH effect is robust. Its Curie temperature, estimated to be ~360 K using Monte-Carlo simulation, is above room temperature and higher than most of two-dimensional ferromagnetic thin films. We also discuss the manipulation of its exchange energy and nontrivial band gap by applying in-plane strain. Our work adds a new experimentally feasible member to the QAH insulator family, which is expected to have broad applications in nanoelectronics and spintronics.

Experimental observation of anisotropic Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly in type-II Weyl semimetal WTe$_{1.98}$ crystals at the quasi-classical regime

The asymmetric electron dispersion in type-II Weyl semimetal theoretically hosts anisotropic transport properties. Here we observe the significant anisotropic Adler-Bell-Jackiw (ABJ) anomaly in the Fermi-level delicately adjusted WTe$_{1.98}$ crystals. Quantitatively, $C_w$ , a coefficient representing intensity of ABJ anomaly, along a- and b-axis of WTe$_{1.98}$ are 0.030 and 0.051 T$^{-2}$ at 2 K, respectively. We found that temperature-sensitive ABJ anomaly is attributed to topological phase transition from type-II Weyl semimetal to trivial semimetal, which is verified by first-principles calculation using experimentally determined lattice parameters at different temperatures. Theoretical electrical transport study reveals that observation of ansotropic ABJ both along a- and b-axis in WTe$_{1.98}$ is attributed to electrical transport in the quasi-classical regime. Our work may suggest that electron-doped WTe$_2$ is an ideal playground to explore the novel properties in type-II Weyl semimetals.

Insight into the Role of Oxygen in Phase-Change Material GeTe

Oxygen is widely used to tune the performance of chalcogenide phase-change materials in the usage of phase-Change random access memory (PCRAM) which is considered as the most promising next-generation non-volatile memory. However, the microscopic role of oxygen in the write-erase process, i.e., the reversible phase transition between crystalline and amorphous state of phase-change materials is not clear yet. Using oxygen doped GeTe as an example, this work unravels the role of oxygen at the atomic scale by means of ab initio total energy calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Our main finding is that after the amorphization and the subsequent re-crystallization process simulated by ab initio molecular dynamics, oxygen will drag one Ge atom out of its lattice site and both atoms stay in the interstitial region near the Te vacancy that was originally occupied by the oxygen, forming a "dumbbell-like" defect (O-VTe-Ge), which is in sharp contrast to the results of ab initio total energy calculations at 0 K showing that the oxygen prefers to substitute Te in crystalline GeTe. This specific defect configuration is found to be responsible for the slower crystallization speed and hence the improved data retention of oxygen doped GeTe as reported in recent experimental work. Moreover, we find that the oxygen will increase the effective mass of the carrier and thus increases the resistivity of GeTe. Our results unravel the microscopic mechanism of the oxygen-doping optimization of phase-change material GeTe, and the present reported mechanism can be applied to other oxygen doped ternary chalcogenide phase-change materials.

Probing Gluon TMDs at a Future EIC

Gluon TMDs can be accessed through the analysis of azimuthal asymmetries for heavy quark pair and dijet production in electron-proton collisions, similarly to the way quark TMDs are commonly extracted from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering data. We calculate the upper bounds for these observables, showing in which kinematic regions they are large enough to be measured in future experiments at an Electron-Ion Collider. Moreover, we study their behavior in the small-$x$ region, adopting a McLerran-Venugopalan model for unpolarized and linearly polarized gluon distributions. By comparison with related observables at RHIC and LHC, we expect to gather information on the process dependence of the gluon TMDs and to test our prediction of a sign change of the gluon Sivers function and two other $T$-odd gluon distributions.

We further show that this gluon distribution can be probed through the angular correlation in virtual photon quasi-elastic scattering on a nucleus.

Chiral Ordering Spin Associated Glass like State in SrRuO3SrIrO3 Superlattice

Heterostructure interface provides a powerful platform to observe rich emergent phenomena, such as interfacial superconductivity, nontrivial topological surface state. Here SrRuO3/SrIrO3 superlattices were epitaxially synthesized. The magnetic and electrical properties of these superlattices were characterized. Broad cusps in the zero field cooling magnetization curves and near stable residual magnetization below the broad cusps, as well as two steps magnetization hysteresis loops are observed. The magnetization relaxes following a modified Stretched function model indicating coexistence of spin glass and ferromagnetic ordering in the superlattices. Topological Hall effect was demonstrated at low temperature and weakened with the increase of SrIrO3 layer thickness. These results suggest that chiral ordering spin texture were generated at the interfaces due to the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, which generates the spin glass behaviors. The present work demonstrates that SrIrO3 can effectively induce interface DM interactions in heterostructures, it would pave light on the new research directions of strong spin orbit interaction oxides, from the viewpoints of both basic science and prospective spintronics devices applications.

The spin dependent odderon in the diquark model

In this short note, we report a di-quark model calculation for the spin dependent odderon and demonstrate that the asymmetrical color source distribution in the transverse plane of a transversely polarized hadron plays an essential role in yielding the spin dependent odderon. This calculation confirms the earlier finding that the spin dependent odderon is closely related to the parton orbital angular momentum.

Temperature effect on lattice and electronic structures of WTe$_2$ from first-principles study

Tungsten ditelluride (WTe$_2$) exhibits extremely large and unsaturated magnetoresistance (MR). Due to the large spatially extensions of Te-5p and W-5d orbitals, the electronic properties of WTe$_2$ are sensitive to the lattice structures, which can probably affect the strongly temperature dependent MR found in experiment. Based on first-principle calculations, we investigate the temperature effect on the lattice and electronic structures of WTe$_2$. Our numerical results show that the thermal expansion coefficients of WTe$_2$ are highly anisotropic and considerably large. However, the temperature (less than 300 K) has ignorable effect on the Fermi surface of WTe$_2$. Our theoretical results clarify that the thermal expansion is not the main reason of the temperature-induced rapid decrease of magnetoresistance.

Nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation with all-resonant control

The implementation of holonomic quantum computation on superconducting quantum circuits is challenging due to the general requirement of controllable complicated coupling between multilevel systems. Here we solve this problem by proposing a scalable circuit QED lattice with simple realization of a universal set of nonadiabatic holonomic quantum gates. Compared with the existing proposals, we can achieve both the single and two logical qubit gates in an tunable and all-resonant way through a hybrid transmon-transmission-line encoding of the logical qubits in the decoherence-free subspaces. This distinct advantage thus leads to quantum gates with very fast speeds and consequently very high fidelities. Therefore, our scheme paves a promising way towards the practical realization of high-fidelity nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation.

Asymmetries in Heavy Quark Pair and Dijet Production at an EIC

Asymmetries in heavy quark pair and dijet production in electron-proton collisions allow studies of gluon TMDs in close analogy to studies of quark TMDs in semi-inclusive DIS. Here we present expressions for azimuthal asymmetries for both unpolarized and transversely polarized proton cases and consider the maximal asymmetries allowed. The latter are found to be rather sizeable, except in certain kinematic limits which are pointed out. In addition, we consider the small-x limit and expectations from a McLerran-Venugopalan model for unpolarized and linearly polarized gluons and from a perturbative, large transverse momentum calculation for the T-odd gluon TMDs. Comparison to related observables at RHIC and LHC is expected to provide valuable information about the process dependence of the gluon TMDs. In particular this will offer the possibility of a sign change test of the gluon Sivers TMD and two other T-odd gluon TMDs. This provides additional motivation for studies of azimuthal asymmetries in heavy quark pair and dijet production at a future Electron-Ion Collider.
