Topological states of non-Dirac electrons on triangular lattice

We demonstrate the possibility of topological states for non-Dirac electrons. Specifically it is shown that, because of the $C_{\rm 3}$ crystal symmetry and time reversal symmetry, $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbits accommodated on triangular lattice exhibit a quadratic band touching at $Γ$ point at the Fermi level. When the atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is taken into account, a gap is opened resulting in a quantum spin Hall effect state. As revealed explicitly by a $k\cdot p$ model, the topology is associated with a meron structure in the pseudo spin texture with vorticity two, a mechanism different from honeycomb lattice and the band inversion. One possible realization of this scheme is the 1/3 coverage by Bi atom adapted on the Si[111] surface. First-principle calculations are carried out, and a global gap of $\sim 0.15$eV is observed. With the Si substrate taking part in realizing the nontrivial topology, the present template is expected to make the integration of topological states into existing electronics and photonics technologies promising.

Color entanglement for $γ$-jet production in polarized pA collisions

A more reliable treatment of transverse momentum dependent physics and in particular transverse single spin asymmetries is urgently required, e.g. for polarized pA physics including novel effects like color entanglement. We argue that the measurement of azimuthal angular correlations of photons and jets produced in pA collisions provides a direct access to the novel gluon distribution $G_4$ that enters into many such processes.

Elastic Properties of Chemical-Vapor-Deposited Monolayer MoS2, WS2, and Their Bilayer Heterostructures

Elastic properties of materials are an important factor in their integration in applications. Chemical vapor deposited (CVD) monolayer semiconductors are proposed as key components in industrial-scale flexible devices and building blocks of 2D van der Waals heterostructures. However, their mechanical and elastic properties have not been fully characterized. Here we report high 2D elastic moduli of CVD monolayer MoS2 and WS2 (~ 170 N/m), which is very close to the value of exfoliated MoS2 monolayers and almost half the value of the strongest material, graphene. The 2D moduli of their bilayer heterostructures are lower than the sum of 2D modulus of each layer, but comparable to the corresponding bilayer homostructure, implying similar interactions between the hetero monolayers as between homo monolayers. These results not only provide deep insight to understanding interlayer interactions in 2D van der Waals structures, but also potentially allow engineering of their elastic properties as desired.

Transverse single spin asymmetries at small x and the anomalous magnetic moment

We show that in the Mclerran-Venugopalan model, an axial asymmetrical valence quark distributions in the transverse plane of a transversely polarized proton can give rise to a spin dependent odderon. Such polarized odderon is responsible for the transverse single spin asymmetries(SSAs) for jet production in the backward region of pp collisions and open charm production in semi-inclusive DIS process.

On fermionic representation of the framed topological vertex

The Gromov-Witten invariants of \mathbb{C}^3 with branes is encoded in the topological vertex which has a very complicated combinatorial expression. A simple formula for the topological vertex was proposed by Aganagic et al in the fermionic picture. We will propose a similar formula for the framed topological vertex and prove it in the case when there are one or two branes.

On fermionic representation of the Gromov-Witten invariants of the resolved Conifold

We prove that the fermionic form of the generating function of the Gromov-Witten invariants of the resolved conifold is a Bogoliubov transform of the fermionic vacuum; in particular, it is a tau function of the KP hierarchy. Our proof is based on the gluing rule of the topological vertex and the formulas of the fermionic representations of the framed one-legged and two-legged topological vertex which were conjectured by Aganagic et al and proved in our recent work.

Image reconstruction from limited range projections using orthogonal moments

A set of orthonormal polynomials is proposed for image reconstruction from projection data. The relationship between the projection moments and image moments is discussed in detail, and some interesting properties are demonstrated. Simulation results are provided to validate the method and to compare its performance with previous works.

Deep Supervised and Convolutional Generative Stochastic Network for Protein Secondary Structure Prediction

Predicting protein secondary structure is a fundamental problem in protein structure prediction. Here we present a new supervised generative stochastic network (GSN) based method to predict local secondary structure with deep hierarchical representations. GSN is a recently proposed deep learning technique (Bengio & Thibodeau-Laufer, 2013) to globally train deep generative model. We present the supervised extension of GSN, which learns a Markov chain to sample from a conditional distribution, and applied it to protein structure prediction. To scale the model to full-sized, high-dimensional data, like protein sequences with hundreds of amino acids, we introduce a convolutional architecture, which allows efficient learning across multiple layers of hierarchical representations. Our architecture uniquely focuses on predicting structured low-level labels informed with both low and high-level representations learned by the model. In our application this corresponds to labeling the secondary structure state of each amino-acid residue. We trained and tested the model on separate sets of non-homologous proteins sharing less than 30% sequence identity. Our model achieves 66.4% Q8 accuracy on the CB513 dataset, better than the previously reported best performance 64.9% (Wang et al., 2011) for this challenging secondary structure prediction problem.

Rationality problem for transitive subgroups of S_8

For any field K and any transitive subgroup G of S_8, let G acts naturally on K(x_1, . . ., x_8) by permutations of the variables, we prove that under some minor conditions K(x_1, . . ., x_8)^G is always K-rational except G is A_8 or G is isomorphic to PGL(2, 7). We pay special attentions on the characteristic 2 cases.

Mechanically Modulated Tunneling Resistance in Monolayer MoS2

We report on the modulation of tunneling resistance in MoS2 monolayers by nano-indentation using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The resistance between the conductive AFM tip and the bottom electrode separated by a monolayer MoS2 is reversibly reduced by up to 4 orders of magnitude, which is attributed to enhanced quantum tunneling when the monolayer is compressed by the tip force. Under the WKB approximation, the experimental data is quantitatively explained by using the metal-insulator-metal tunneling diode model. As an ideal tunneling medium, the defect-free, nanometer-thick MoS2 monolayer can serve as the active layer for non-impacting nano-electro-mechanical switches.

Sensitively Temperature-Dependent Spin Orbit Coupling in SrIrO3 Thin Films

Spin orbit coupling plays a non-perturbation effect in many recently developed novel fields including topological insulators and spin-orbit assistant Mott insulators. In this paper, strongly temperature-dependent spin orbit coupling, revealed by weak anti-localization, is observed at low temperature in 5d strongly correlated compound, SrIrO3. As the temperature rising, increase rate of Rashba coefficient is nearly 30%-45%/K. The increase is nearly 100 times over that observed in semiconductor heterostructures. Microscopically, the large increase of Rashba coefficient is attributed to the significant evolution of effective Landé g factor on temperature, whose mechanism is discussed. Sensitively temperature-dependent spin orbit coupling in SrIrO3 might be applied in spintronic devices

Rationality for subgroups of S_6

For a transitive subgroup $G \le S_6$ which contain $C_3 \times C_3$ as subgroup, we prove that $K(x_1,\dots,x_6)^G$ is rational over $K$, where $K$ is any field, and $G$ acts naturally on $K(x_1,\dots,x_6)$ by permutations on the variables. We also give an application on construction of generic polynomials.

Invariants of wreath products and subgroups of S_6

Let $G$ be a subgroup of $S_6$, the symmetric group of degree 6. For any field $k$, $G$ acts naturally on the rational function field $k(x_1,...,x_6)$ via $k$-automorphisms defined by $σ\cdot x_i=x_{σ(i)}$ for any $σ\in G$, any $1\le i\le 6$. Theorem. The fixed field $k(x_1,...,x_6)^G$ is rational (=purely transcendental) over $k$, except possibly when $G$ is isomorphic to $PSL_2(\bm{F}_5)$, $PGL_2(\bm{F}_5)$ or $A_6$. When $G$ is isomorphic to $PSL_2(\bm{F}_5)$ or $PGL_2(\bm{F}_5)$, then $\bm{C}(x_1,...,x_6)^G$ is $\bm{C}$-rational and $k(x_1,...,x_6)^G$ is stably $k$-rational for any field $k$. The invariant theory of wreath products will be investigated also.

Detecting non-Abelian geometric phase in circuit QED

We propose a scheme for detecting noncommutative feature of the non-Abelian geometric phase in circuit QED, which involves three transmon qubits capacitively coupled to an one-dimensional transmission line resonator. By controlling the external magnetic flux of the transmon qubits, we can obtain an effective tripod interaction of our circuit QED setup. The noncommutative feature of the non-Abelian geometric phase is manifested that for an initial state undergo two specific loops in different order will result in different final states. Our numerical calculations show that this difference can be unambiguously detected in the proposed system.

On the process dependent nuclear $k_\perp$ broadening effect

We study the process dependent nuclear $k_\perp$ broadening effect by employing the transverse momentum dependent(TMD) factorization approach in combination with the Mclerran-Venugopalan(MV) model. More specifically, we investigate how the parton transverse momentum distributions are affected by the process dependent gauge links in cold nuclear matter. In particular, our analysis also applies to the polarized cases including the nuclear quark Boer-Mulders function and the linearly polarized gluon distribution. Our main focus is on the nuclear TMDs at intermediate or large x.
