Raman vibrational spectra of bulk to monolayer ReS2 with lower symmetry

Lattice structure and symmetry of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials are of key importance to their fundamental mechanical, thermal, electronic and optical properties. Raman spectroscopy, as a convenient and nondestructive tool, however has its limitations on identifying all symmetry allowing Raman modes and determining the corresponding crystal structure of 2D layered materials with high symmetry like graphene and MoS2. Due to lower structural symmetry and extraordinary weak interlayer coupling of ReS2, we successfully identified all 18 first-order Raman active modes for bulk and monolayer ReS2. Without van der Waals (vdW) correction, our local density approximation (LDA) calculations successfully reproduce all the Raman modes. Our calculations also suggest no surface reconstruction effect and the absence of low frequency rigid-layer Raman modes below 100 cm-1. Combining with Raman and LDA thus provides a general approach for studying the vibrational and structural properties of 2D layered materials with lower symmetry.

Circuit electromechanics with single photon strong coupling

In circuit electromechanics, the coupling strength is usually very small. Here, replacing the capacitor in circuit electromechanics by a superconducting flux qubit, we show that the coupling among the qubit and the two resonators can induce effective electromechanical coupling which can attain the strong coupling regime at the single photon level with feasible experimental parameters. We use dispersive couplings among two resonators and the qubit while the qubit is also driven by an external classical field. These couplings form a three-wave mixing configuration among the three elements where the qubit degree of freedom can be adiabatically eliminated, and thus results in the enhanced coupling between the two resonators. Therefore, our work constitutes the first step towards studying quantum nonlinear effect in circuit electromechanics.

Emergent Geometry and Mirror Symmetry of A Point

By considering the partition function of the topological 2D gravity, a conformal field theory on the Airy curve emerges as the mirror theory of Gromov-Witten theory of a point. In particular, a formula for bosonic n-point functions in terms of fermionic 2-point function for this theory is derived.

The gluon Sivers distribution: status and future prospects

This is a review of what is currently known about the gluon Sivers distribution and of what are the opportunities to learn more about it. Because single transverse spin asymmetries in $p^\uparrow \, p \to π\, X$ provide only indirect information about the gluon Sivers function through the relation with the quark-gluon and tri-gluon Qiu-Sterman functions, current data from hadronic collisions at RHIC have not yet been translated into a solid constraint on the gluon Sivers function. SIDIS data, including the COMPASS deuteron data, allow for a gluon Sivers contribution that is of the natural size expected from large $N_c$ arguments, which is ${\cal O}(1/N_c)$ times the nonsinglet quark Sivers contribution. Several very promising processes to measure the gluon Sivers effect directly have been put forward, which apart from ongoing and future investigations at RHIC, would strongly favor experiments at AFTER@LHC and a possible future Electron-Ion Collider. Due to the inherent process dependence of TMDs, the gluon Sivers TMD probed in the various processes are not necessarily the same, but rather can be different linear combinations of two universal gluon Sivers functions that have different behavior under charge conjugation and that therefore satisfy different theoretical constraints. For this reason both hadronic and DIS type of collisions are essential in the study of the role of gluons in transversely polarized protons.

Cavity QED implementation of non-adiabatic holonomies for universal quantum gates in decoherence-free subspaces with nitrogen-vacancy centers

A cavity QED implementation of the non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation in decoherence-free subspaces is proposed with nitrogen-vacancy centers coupled commonly to the whispering-gallery mode of a microsphere cavity, where a universal set of quantum gates can be realized on the qubits. In our implementation, with the assistant of the appropriate driving fields, the quantum evolution is insensitive to the cavity field state, which is only virtually excited. The implemented non-adiabatic holonomies, utilizing optical transitions in the Λ type of three-level configuration of the nitrogen-vacancy centers, can be used to construct a universal set of quantum gates on the encoded logical qubits. Therefore, our scheme opens up the possibility of realizing universal holonomic quantum computation with cavity assisted interaction on solid-state spins characterized by long coherence times.

Theoretical investigation on the transition metal borides with Ta3B4-type structure: a class of hard and refractory materials

Based on density functional theory, we have systematically studied the structural stability, mechanical properties and chemical bonding of the transition metal borides M3B4 (M=Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Mo, Hf, Ta, and W) for the first time. All the present studied M3B4 have been demonstrated to be thermodynamically and mechanically stable. The bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, microhardness, Debye temperature and anisotropy have been derived for ideal polycrystalline M3B4 aggregates. In addition, the relationship between Debye temperature and microhardness has been discussed for these isostructral M3B4. Furthermore, the results of the Cauchy pressure, the ratio of bulk modulus to shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio suggest that the valence electrons of transition metals play an important role in the ductility of M3B4. The calculated total density of states for M3B4 indicates that all these borides display a metallic conductivity. By analyzing the electron localization function, we show that the improvement of the ductility in these M3B4 might attribute to the decrease of their angular bonding character.

Mechanical properties and electronic structure of the incompressible rhenium carbides and nitrides: A first-principles study

By means of first-principles calculations, the structural stability, mechanical properties and electronic structure of the newly synthesized incompressible Re2C, Re2N, Re3N and an analogous compound Re3C have been investigated. Our results agree well with the available experimental and theoretical data. The proposed Re3C is shown to be energetically, mechanically and dynamically stable and also incompressible. Furthermore, it is suggested that the incompressibility of these compounds is originated from the strong covalent bonding character with the hybridization of 5d orbital of Re and the 2p orbital of C or N, and a zigzag topology of interconnected bonds, e.g., Re-Re, Re-C or Re-N bonding.

A note on the scale evolution of tri-gluon correlations

We reexamine the scale dependence of the gluonic pole tri-gluon correlations relevant for the transverse single spin asymmetries. Our results differ from those of all previous similar calculations. The corresponding asymptotic behavior of tri-gluon correlations at small x is also briefly discussed.

Transverse single spin asymmetry in direct photon production in polarized pA collisions

We study the transverse single spin asymmetry in direct photon production in pA collisions with incoming protons being transversely polarized. To facilitate the calculation, we formulate a hybrid approach in which the nucleus is treated in the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework while the collinear twist-3 formalism is applied on the proton side. It has been found that an additional term which arises from color entanglement shows up in the spin dependent differential cross section. The fact that this additional term is perturbatively calculable allows us to quantitatively study color entanglement effects.

Transverse single spin asymmetry in Drell-Yan production in polarized pA collisions

We study the transverse single spin asymmetry in Drell-Yan production in pA collisions with incoming protons being transversely polarized. We carry out the calculation using a newly developed hybrid approach. The polarized cross section computed in the hybrid approach is consistent with that obtained from the usual TMD factorization at low transverse momentum as expected, whereas at high transverse momentum, color entanglement effect is found to play a role in contributing to the spin asymmetry of Drell-Yan production, though it is a $1/N_c^2$ suppressed effect.

Realization of a reversible switching in TaO2 polymorphs via Peierls distortion for resistance random access memory

Transition-metal-oxide based resistance random access memory is a promising candidate for next-generation universal non-volatile memories. Searching and designing appropriate new materials used in the memories becomes an urgent task. Here, a new structure with the TaO2 formula was predicted using evolutionary algorithms in combination with first-principles calculations. This new structure having a triclinic symmetry (T-TaO2) is both energetically and dynamically more favorable than the commonly believed rutile structure (R-TaO2). Our hybrid functional calculations show that T-TaO2 is a semiconductor with a band gap of 1.0 eV, while R-TaO2 is a metallic conductor. This large difference in electrical property makes TaO2 a potential candidate for resistance random access memory (RRAM). Furthermore, we have shown that T-TaO2 is actually a Peierls distorted R-TaO2 phase and the transition between these two structures is via a directional displacement of Ta atoms. The energy barrier for the reversible phase transition from R-TaO2 to T-TaO2 is 0.19 eV/atom and the other way around is 0.23 eV/atom, suggesting low power consumption for the resistance switch. The present findings provide a new mechanism for the resistance switch and will also stimulate experimental work to fabricate tantalum oxides based RRAM.

In topological 1D gravity, the genus zero one-point function combined with the gradient of the action function leads to a spectral curve and its special deformation. After quantization, the partition function is identified as an element in the bosonic Fock space uniquely specified by the Virasoro constraints.

Tunable Semimetallic State in Compressive-strained SrIrO3 Films Revealed by Transport Behaviors

Orthorhombic SrIrO3 is a typical spin-orbit-coupling correlated metal that shows diversified physical properties under the external stimuli. Here nonlinear Hall effect and weakly temperature-dependent resistance are observed in a SrIrO3 film epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 substrate. It infers that orthorhombic SrIrO3 is a semimetal oxide. However, linear Hall effect and insensitive-temperature-dependent resistance are observed in SrIrO3 films grown on (La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3 (LSAT) substrates, suggesting a tunable semimetallic state due to band structure change in SrIrO3 films under different compressive strain. The mechanism of this evolution is explored in detail through strain-state analysis by reciprocal space mapping and electron diffraction, carrier density and mobility calculations, as well as electronic band structure evolution under compressive strain (predicted by tight-binding approximation). It might suggest that the strain-induced band shift leads to the semimetallic tuning in the SrIrO3 film grown on from SrTiO3 to LSAT substrates. Our findings illustrate the tunability of SrIrO3 properties and pave the way to induce novel physical states in SrIrO3 such as the proposed topological insulator state in heterostructures.

High fidelity quantum state transfer in electromechanical systems with intermediate coupling

Hybrid quantum systems usually consist of two or more subsystems, which may take the advantages of the different systems. Recently, the hybrid system consisting of circuit electromechanical subsystems have attracted great attention due to its advanced fabrication and scalable integrated photonic circuit techniques. Here, we propose a scheme for high fidelity quantum state transfer between a superconducting qubit and a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond, which are coupled to a superconducting transmission-line resonator with coupling strength $g_1$ and a nanomechanical resonator with coupling strength $g_2$, respectively. Meanwhile, the two resonators are parametrically coupled with coupling strength $J$. The system dynamics, including the decoherence effects, is numerical investigated. It is found that both the small ($J \ll \{g_1, g_2\}$) and large ($J \gg \{g_1, g_2\}$) coupling regimes of this hybrid system can not support high fidelity quantum state transfer before significant technique advances. However, in the intermediate coupling regime ($J \sim g_1 \sim g_2$), in contrast to a conventional wisdom, high fidelity quantum information transfer can be implemented, providing a promising route towards high fidelity quantum state transfer in similar coupled resonators systems.
