Enhanced transmission of optically thick metallic films at infrared wavelengths

For an optically thick metallic film, the transmission for both s- and p-polarized waves is extremely low. If the metallic film is coated on both sides with a finite dielectric layer, light transmission for $p$-polarized waves can be enhanced considerably. This enhancement is not related to surface plasmon-polaritions. Instead, it is due to the interplay between Fabry-Perot interference in the coated dielectric layer and the existence of the Brewster angle at the dielectric/metallic interface. It is shown that the coated metallic films can act as excellent polarizers at infrared wavelengths.

Universal behavior of localization of residue fluctuations in globular proteins

Localization properties of residue fluctuations in globular proteins are studied theoretically by using the Gaussian network model. Participation ratio for each residue fluctuation mode is calculated. It is found that the relationship between participation ratio and frequency is similar for all globular proteins, indicating a universal behavior in spite of their different size, shape, and architecture.

Two-dimensional photonic crystal polarizer

A novel polarizer made from two-dimensional photonic bandgap materials was demonstrated theoretically. This polarizer is fundamentally different from the conventinal ones. It can function in a wide frequency range with high performance and the size can be made very compact, which renders it useful as a micropolarizer in microoptics.
