Local suppression of the superfluid density of PuCoGa$_5$ in the Swiss Cheese model

We present superfluid density calculations for the unconventional superconductor PuCoGa$_5$ by solving the real-space Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations on a square lattice within the Swiss Cheese model in the presence of strong on-site disorder. We find that despite strong electronic inhomogeneity, one can establish a one-to-one correspondence between the local maps of the density of states, superconducting order parameter, and superfluid density. In this model, strong on-site impurity scattering punches localized holes into the fabric of d-wave superconductivity similar to a Swiss cheese. Already a two-dimensional impurity concentration of $n_{\rm imp} = 4%$ gives rise to a pronounced short-range suppression of the order parameter and a suppression of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ by roughly 20% compared to its pure limit value $T_{c0}$, whereas the superfluid density $ρ_s$ is reduced drastically by about 70%. This result is consistent with available experimental data for aged (400 day-old) and fresh (25 day-old) PuCoGa$_5$ superconducting samples. In addition, we show that the $T^2-$dependence of the low-$T$ superfluid density, a signature of dirty d-wave superconductivity, originates from a combined effect in the density of states of `gap filling' and `gap closing'. Finally, we demonstate that the Uemuera plot of $T_c$ vs.\ $ρ_s$ deviates sharply from the conventional Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory for radiation-induced defects in PuCoGa$_5$, but follows the same trend of short-coherence-length high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors.

Anomalous Femtosecond Quasiparticle Dynamics of Hidden Order State in URu$_2$Si$_2$

At T$_0$ = 17.5 K an exotic phase emerges from a heavy fermion state in {\ur}. The nature of this hidden order (HO) phase has so far evaded explanation. Formation of an unknown quasiparticle (QP) structure is believed to be responsible for the massive removal of entropy at HO transition, however, experiments and ab-initio calculations have been unable to reveal the essential character of the QP. Here we use femtosecond pump-probe time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) to elucidate the ultrafast dynamics of the QP. We show how the Fermi surface is renormalized by shifting states away from the Fermi level at specific locations, characterized by vector $q_{<110>} = 0.56 \pm 0.08$ {\an}. Measurements of the temperature-time response reveal that upon entering the HO the QP lifetime in those locations increases from 42 fs to few hundred fs. The formation of the long-lived QPs is identified here as a principal actor of the HO.

Mott transition in Modulated Lattices and Parent Insulator of (K,Tl)yFexSe2 Superconductors

The degree of electron correlations remains a central issue in the iron-based superconductors. The parent iron pnictides are antiferromagnetic, and their bad-metal behavior has been interpreted in terms of proximity to a Mott transition. We study such a transition in multi-orbital models on modulated lattices containing an ordered pattern of iron vacancies, using a slave-rotor method. We show that the ordered vacancies lead to a band-narrowing, which pushes the system to the Mott insulator side. This effect is proposed to underlie the insulating behavior observed in the parent compounds of the newly discovered (K,Tl)yFexSe2 superconductors.

Quasiparticle states around a nonmagnetic impurity in electron-doped iron-based superconductors with spin-density-wave order

The quasiparticle states around a nonmagnetic impurity in electron-doped iron-based superconductors with spin-density-wave (SDW) order are investigated as a function of doping and impurity scattering strength. In the undoped sample, where a pure SDW state exists, two impurity-induced resonance peaks are observed around the impurity site and they are shifted to higher (lower) energies as the strength of the positive (negative) scattering potential (SP) is increased. For the doped samples where the SDW order and the superconducting order coexist, the main feature is the existence of sharp in-gap resonance peaks whose positions and intensity depend on the strength of the SP and the doping concentration. In all cases, the local density of states exhibits clear $C_2$ symmetry. We also note that in the doped cases, the impurity will divide the system into two sublattices with distinct values of magnetic order. Here we use the band structure of a two-orbital model, which considers the asymmetry of the As atoms above and below the Fe-Fe plane. This model is suitable to study the properties of the surface layers in the iron-pnictides and should be more appropriate to describe the scanning tunneling microscopy experiments.

Interplay between Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism in a Multi-layered System

Based on a microscopic model, we study the interplay between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in a multi-layered system, where two superconductors are separated by an antiferromagnetic region. Within a self-consistent mean-field theory, this system is solved numerically. We find that the antiferromagnetism in the middle layers profoundly affects the supercurrent flowing across the junction, while the phase difference across the junction influences the development of antiferromagnetism in the middle layers. This study may not only shed new light on the mechanism for high-$T_{c}$ superconductors, but also bring important insights to building Josephson-junction-based quantum devices, such as SQUID and superconducting qubit.

Superconducting pairing of interacting electrons: implications from the two-impurity Anderson model

We study the non-local superconducting pairing of two interacting Anderson impurities, which has an instability near the quantum critical point from the competition between the Kondo effect and an antiferromagnetic inter-impurity spin exchange interaction. As revealed by the dynamics over the whole energy range, the superconducting pairing fluctuations acquire considerable strength from an energy scale much higher than the characteristic spin fluctuation scale while the low energy behaviors follow those of the staggered spin susceptibility. We argue that the glue to the superconducting pairing is not the spin fluctuations, but rather the effective Coulomb interaction. On the other hand, critical spin fluctuations in the vicinity of quantum criticality are also crucial to a superconducting pairing instability, by preventing a Fermi liquid fixed point being reached to keep the superconducting pairing fluctuations finite at low energies. A superconducting order, to reduce the accumulated entropy carried by the critical degrees of freedom, may arise favorably from this instability.

Correlations between two Anderson impurities

We study the intersite correlation effects on the Kondo dynamics of two Anderson impurities. Two characteristic energy scales are present associated with the splitting of the uniform and staggered spin susceptibilities. The high energy scale has similar properties as the coherence scale in heavy fermion materials while the low energy scale characterizes the competing orders between Kondo singlet state and inter-impurity singlet state. A singlet superconductivity instability is found near the quantum critical point and is associated with the singular staggered spin susceptibility.

Coherence scale of coupled Anderson impurities

For two coupled Anderson impurities, two energy scales are present to characterize the evolution from local moment state of the impurities to either of the inter-impurity singlet or the Kondo singlet ground states. The high energy scale is found to deviate from the single-ion Kondo temperature and rather scales as Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction when it becomes dominant. We find that the scaling behavior and the associated physical properties of this scale are consistent with those of a coherence scale defined in heavy fermion systems.

Magnetic field induced quantum phase transitions in the two-impurity Anderson model

In the two-impurity Anderson model, the inter-impurity spin exchange interaction favors a spin singlet state between two impurities leading to the breakdown of the Kondo effect. We show that a local uniform magnetic field can delocalize the quasiparticles to restore the Kondo resonance. This transition is found to be continuous, accompanied by not only the divergence of the staggered (antiferromagnetic) susceptibility, but also the divergence of the uniform spin susceptibility. This may imply that the magnetic field induced quantum phase transitions in Kondo systems are in favor of the local critical type.

Quasiparticle dynamics in overdoped Bi$_{1.4}$Pb$_{0.7}$Sr$_{1.9}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$: Coexistence of superconducting gap and pseudogap below $T_{c}$

Photoexcited quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in overdoped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ ($T_{c}$=65~K, hole doping $p$=0.22) single crystal is investigated as a function of temperature. We provide evidence of a $\sim$22~meV pseudogap ($T^{\ast}$$\approx$100~K) at this doping level. Our data support the scenario where both the superconducting gap and pseudogap coexist in the superconducting state. Our results also suggest an increased scattering rate between electrons and spin fluctuations as the sample enters the pseudogap phase.

Band Narrowing and Mott Localization in Iron Oxychalcogenides La2O2Fe2O(Se,S)2

Bad metal properties have motivated a description of the parent iron pnictides as correlated metals on the verge of Mott localization. What has been unclear is whether interactions can push these and related compounds to the Mott insulating side of the phase diagram. Here we consider the iron oxychalcogenides La2O2Fe2O(Se,S)2, which contain an Fe square lattice with an expanded unit cell. We show theoretically that they contain enhanced correlation effects through band narrowing compared to LaOFeAs, and we provide experimental evidence that they are Mott insulators with moderate charge gaps. We also discuss the magnetic properties in terms of a Heisenberg model with frustrating J1-J2-J2' exchange interactions on a "doubled" checkerboard lattice.

Theory of time-resolved spectral function in high-temperature superconductors with bosonic modes

We develop a three-temperature model to simulate the time dependence of electron and phonon temperatures in high-temperature superconductors displaying strong anistropic electron-phonon coupling. This model not only takes the tight-binding band structure into account, but also is valid in superconducting state. Based on this model, we calculate the time-resolved spectral function via the double-time Green's functions. We find that the dip-hump structure evolves with the time delay. More interestingly, new phononic structures are obtained when the phonons are excited by a laser field. This signature may serve as a direct evidence for electron-vibration mode coupling.

Exciton Condensate Modulation in Electron-Hole Bilayers: A Real-Space Visualization

We study the texture of the exciton condensate at low temperatures in an independently gated electron-hole bilayer system. A model Hamiltonian is solved in real space within a mean-field approximation. It is found that, with increased electron-hole density polarization, the system experiences phase transformations from the zero center-of-mass momentum superfluid state, through one- and two-dimensional exciton pair modulated states, into the normal state. At weak density polarization, the modulating state resembles the Larkin-Ovchinikov state in superconductors in the presence of an exchange field in the weak-coupling BCS limit, and becomes stripe-like in the strong coupling BEC limit. In the one-dimensional modulated phase, the density of states exhibits low-energy intra-gap resonance quasiparticle states, which are localized in the nodal region.

Impurity effect as a probe for order parameter symmetry in iron-based superconductors

The pointlike impurity scattering is studied for a superconductor with different pairing symmetries based on a minimal two band model proposed by S. Raghu $et$ $al.$ [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 77}, R220503 (2008)], and the self-consistent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Two intra-gap resonance peaks are found at or near the nonmagnetic impurity site for a typical $s_{x^2y^2}$ symmetry and strong scattering potentials. Such intra-gap resonance peaks are absent for the sign unchanged s-wave and $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave order parameter. Thus we propose that a non-magnetic impurity with strong scattering potentials can be used to probe the pairing symmetry in iron-based superconductors.

Interplay between the Fulde-Ferrell phase and Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase in the superconducting ring pierced by an Aharonov-Bohm flux

We study the phase diagram of a superconducting ring threaded by an Aharonov-Bohm flux and an in-plane magnetic Zeeman field. The simultaneous presence of both the external flux and the in-plane magnetic field leads to the competition between the Fulde-Ferrell (FF) phase and the Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) phase. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we investigate the spacial profile of the order parameter. Both the FF phase and the LO phase are found to exist stably in this system. The phase boundary is determined by comparing the free energy. The distortion of the phase diagrams due to the mesoscopic effect is also studied.

The f-spin physics of rare-earth iron pnictides: influence of d-electron antiferromagnetic order on the heavy fermion phase diagram

Some of the high Tc iron pnictides contain magnetic rare-earth elements, raising the question of how the existence and tunability of a d-electron antiferromagnetic order influences the heavy fermion behavior of the f-moments. With CeOFeP and CeOFeAs in mind as prototypes, we derive an extended Anderson lattice model appropriate for these quaternary systems. We show that the Kondo screening of the f-moments are efficiently suppressed by the d-electron ordering. We also argue that, inside the d-electron ordered state (as in CeOFeAs), the f-moments provide a rare realization of a quantum frustrated magnet with competing J1-J2-J3 interactions in an effective square lattice. Implications for the heavy fermion physics in broader contexts are also discussed.

Can time-dependent density functional theory predict the excitation energies of conjugated polymers?

Excitation energies of light-emitting organic conjugated polymers have been investigated with time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) within the adiabatic approximation for the dynamical exchange-correlation potential. Our calculations show that the accuracy of the calculated TDDFT excitation energies largely depends upon the accuracy of the dihedral angle obtained by the geometry optimization on ground-state DFT methods. We find that, when the DFT torsional dihedral angles between two adjacent phenyl rings are close to the experimental dihedral angles, the TDDFT excitation energies agree fairly well with experimental values. Further study shows that, while hybrid density functionals can correctly respect the thumb rule between singlet-singlet and singlet-triplet excitation energies, semilocal functionals do not, suggesting inadequacy of the semilocal functionals in predicting triplet excitation energies of conjugated polymers.

Correlation effects in the iron pnictides

One of the central questions about the iron pnictides concerns the extent to which their electrons are strongly correlated. Here we address this issue through the phenomenology of the charge transport and dynamics, single-electron excitation spectrum, and magnetic ordering and dynamics. We outline the evidence that the parent compounds, while metallic, have electron interactions that are sufficiently strong to produce incipient Mott physics. In other words, in terms of the strength of electron correlations compared to the kinetic energy, the iron pnictides are closer to intermediately-coupled systems lying at the boundary between itinerancy and localization, such as V2O3 or Se-doped NiS2, rather than to simple antiferromagnetic metals like Cr. This level of electronic correlations produces a new small parameter for controlled theoretical analyses, namely the fraction of the single-electron spectral weight that lies in the coherent part of the excitation spectrum. Using this expansion parameter, we construct the effective low-energy Hamiltonian and discuss its implications for the magnetic order and magnetic quantum criticality. Finally, this approach sharpens the notion of magnetic frustration for such a metallic system, and brings about a multiband matrix t-J1-J2 model for the carrier-doped iron pnictides.
