Vortex core states in a minimal two-band model for iron-based superconductors

The pairing symmetry is one of the major issues in the study of iron-based superconductors. We adopt a minimal two-band tight-binding model with various channels of pairing interaction, and derive a set of two-band Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations. The BdG equations are implemented in real space and then solved self-consistently via exact diagonalization. In the uniform case, we find that the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing state is most favorable for a nearest-neighbor pairing interaction while the $s_{x^2y^2}$-wave pairing state is most favorable for a next-nearest-neighbor pairing interaction. The is consistent with that reported by Seo {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 101}, 206404 (2008)]. We then proceed to study the local electronic structure around a magnetic vortex core for both $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave and $s_{x^2y^2}$-wave pairing symmetry in the mixed state. It is found from the local density of states (LDOS) spectra and its spatial variation that the resonance core states near the Fermi energy for the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing symmetry are bound while those for the $s_{x^2y^2}$-wave pairing symmetry can evolve from the localized states into extended ones with varying electron filling factor. Furthermore, by including an effective exchange interaction, the emergent antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave (SDW) order can suppress the resonance core states, which provides one possible avenue to understand the absence of resonance peak as revealed by recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiment (STM) by Yin {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 102}, 097002 (2009)].

Iron pnictides as a new setting for quantum criticality

Two major themes in the physics of condensed matter are quantum critical phenomena and unconventional superconductivity. These usually occur in the context of competing interactions in systems of strongly-correlated electrons. All this interesting physics comes together in the behavior of the recently discovered iron pnictide compounds that have generated enormous interest because of their moderately high-temperature superconductivity. The ubiquity of antiferromagnetic ordering in their phase diagrams naturally raises the question of the relevance of magnetic quantum criticality, but the answer remains uncertain both theoretically and experimentally. Here we show that the undoped iron pnictides feature a novel type of magnetic quantum critical point, which results from a competition between electronic localization and itinerancy. Our theory provides a mechanism to understand the experimentally-observed variation of the ordered moment among the undoped iron pnictides. We suggest P substitution for As in the undoped iron pnictides as a means to access this new example of magnetic quantum criticality in an unmasked fashion. Our findings point to the iron pnictides as a much-needed new setting for quantum criticality, one that offers a new set of control parameters.

Validity of Equation-of-Motion Approach to Kondo Problem in the Large-$N$ limit

The Anderson impurity model for Kondo problem is investigated for arbitrary orbit-spin degeneracy $N$ of the magnetic impurity by the equation of motion method (EOM). By employing a new decoupling scheme, a set self-consistent equations for the one-particle Green function are derived and numerically solved in the large-$N$ approximation. For the particle-hole symmetric Anderson model with finite Coulomb interaction $U$, we show that the Kondo resonance at the impurity site exists for all $N \geq 2$. The approach removes the pathology in the standard EOM for N=2, and has the same level of applicability as non-crossing approximation. For N=2, an exchange field splits the Kondo resonance into only two peaks, consist with the result from more rigorous numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. The temperature dependence of the Kondo resonance peak is also discussed.

Vibrational coherence in electron spin resonance in nanoscale oscillators

We study a scheme for electrical detection, using electron spin resonance, of coherent vibrations in a molecular single electron level trapped near a conduction channel. Both equilibrium spin-currents and non-equilibrium spin- and charge currents are investigated. Inelastic side-band anti-resonances corresponding to the vibrational modes appear in the electron spin resonance spectrum.

Role of bosonic modes in the mechanism of high temperature Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ superconductors using ultrafast optical techniques

Using ultrafast optical techniques, we probe the hole-doping dependence of the electron-boson coupling constant $λ$ in Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$. In the overdoped region, we observe a correlation between ($λ$) and the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$. Upon performing the McMillan analysis, however, we find that $λ$ is too small to explain the high $T_{c}$'s, and that the Coulomb pseudopotential $μ^{\ast}$ is negative. Our analysis therefore reveals two components in the mechanism of high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity -- a dominant pre-existing pairing interaction, together with a weaker electron-phonon interaction that fine-tunes $T_{c}$.

Restoration of $hc/2e$ Magnetic Flux Periodicity in a Hollow $d$-Wave Superconducting Cylinder

The magnetic flux dependence of order parameter and supercurrent is studied in a hollow d-wave superconducting cylinder. It is shown that the existence of line nodal quasiparticles in a pure $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing state gives rise to an $hc/e$ periodicity in the order parameter and a first-order quantum phase transition for a large system size. We demonstrate that the flux periodicity in the supercurrent is sensitive to the detailed electronic band structure and electron filling factor. In particular, we find that, in cooperation with the increase of the cylinder circumference, the $hc/2e$ periodicity can be restored significantly in the supercurrent by avoiding the particle-hole symmetry point. A similar study of a $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ pairing state verifies the peculiarity of unconventional superconductors with nodal structure.

Optimization of the design of superconducting inhomogeneous nanowires

We study optimization of superconducting properties of inhomogeneous nanowires. The main goal of this research is to find an optimized geometry that allows one to maximize the desired property of superconductors, such as the maximum value of local superconducting gap or total condensation energy. We consider axially symmetric design of multi-layered nanowires with possibility to adjust and change the layers thickness. We use numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations to obtain the local superconducting gap for different arrangements of the inhomogeneous structures. The value of the optimized properties can be up to 300% greater compared to a non-optimized geometry. The optimized configuration of multilayers strongly depends on the desired property one wants to optimize and on the number of layers in the nanowire.

Kondo Stripes in an Anderson-Heisenberg Model of Heavy Fermion Systems

We study the interplay between the spin-liquid and Kondo physics, as related to the non-magnetic part of the phase diagram of heavy fermion materials. Within the unrestricted mean-field treatment of the infinite-$U$ 2D Anderson-Heisenberg model, we find that there are two topologically distinct non-degenerate uniform heavy Fermi liquid states that may form as a consequence of the Kondo coupling between spinons and conduction electrons. For certain carrier concentrations the uniform Fermi liquid becomes unstable with respect to formation of a new kind of anharmonic "Kondo stripe" state with inhomogeneous Kondo screening strength and the charge density modulation. These feature are experimentally measurable, and thus may help to establish the relevance of the spin-liquid correlations to heavy fermion materials.

Coulomb correlation in presence of spin-orbit coupling: application to plutonium

Attempts to go beyond the local density approximation (LDA) of Density Functional Theory (DFT) have been increasingly based on the incorporation of more realistic Coulomb interactions. In their earliest implementations, methods like LDA+$U$, LDA + DMFT (Dynamical Mean Field Theory), and LDA+Gutzwiller used a simple model interaction $U$. In this article we generalize the solution of the full Coulomb matrix involving $F^{(0)}$ to $F^{(6)}$ parameters, which is usually presented in terms of an $\ell m_\ell$ basis, into a $jm_{j}$ basis of the total angular momentum, where we also include spin-orbit coupling; this type of theory is needed for a reliable description of $f$-state elements like plutonium, which we use as an example of our theory. Close attention will be paid to spin-flip terms, which are important in multiplet theory but that have been usually neglected in these kinds of studies. We find that, in a density-density approximation, the $jm_j$ basis results provide a very good approximation to the full Coulomb matrix result, in contrast to the much less accurate results for the more conventional $\ell m_\ell$ basis.

Spin Dynamics in a Tunnel Junction between Ferromagnets

The dynamics of a single spin embedded in the tunnel junction (quantum point contact) between ferromagnets is addressed. Using the Keldysh technique, we derive a quantum Langevin equation. As a consequence of the spin-polarization in the leads, the spin displays a rich and unusual dynamics. Parallel configured and equally strong magnetic moments in the leads yield an ordinary spin precession with a Larmor frequency given by the effective magnetic field. Unequal and/or non-parallel configured magnetization, however, causes nutation of the spin in addition to the precession. Our predictions may be directly tested for macroscopic spin clusters.

Zero-Temperature Magnetic Transition in an Easy-Axis Kondo Lattice Model

We address the quantum transition of a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice model with an easy-axis anisotropy using the extended dynamical mean field theory. We derive results in real frequency using the bosonic numerical renormalization group (bNRG) method and compare them with Quantum Monte Carlo results in Matsubara frequency. The bNRG results show a logarithmic divergence in the critical local spin susceptibility, signaling a destruction of Kondo screening. The T=0 transition is consistent with being second order. The bNRG results also display some subtle features; we identify their origin and suggest means for further microscopic studies.

Performance of a non-empirical meta-GGA density functional for excitation energies

It is known that the adiabatic approximation in time-dependent density functional theory usually provides a good description of low-lying excitations of molecules. In the present work, the capability of the adiabatic nonempirical meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) of Tao, Perdew, Staroverov, and Scuseria (TPSS) to describe atomic and molecular excitations is tested. The adiabatic (one-parameter) hybrid version of the TPSS meta-GGA and the adiabatic GGA of Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof (PBE) are also included in the test. The results are compared to experiments and to two well-established hybrid functionals PBE0 and B3LYP. Calculations show that both adiabatic TPSS and TPSSh functionals produce excitation energies in fairly good agreement with experiments, and improve upon the adiabatic local spin density approximation and, in particular, the adiabatic PBE GGA. This further confirms that TPSS is indeed a reliable nonhybrid universal functional which can serve as the starting point from which higher-level approximations can be constructed. The systematic underestimate of the low-lying vertical excitation energies of molecules with time-dependent density functionals within the adiabatic approximation suggests that further improvement can be made with nonadiabatic corrections.

Kondo Resonance in the Presence of Spin-Polarized Currents

We propose an improved method of the equation of motion approach to study the Kondo problem in spin-dependent non-equilibrium conditions. We find that the previously introduced additional renormalization for non-equilibrium Kondo effects is not required when we use a proper decoupling scheme. Our improved formulation is then applied to address the spin-split Kondo peaks when a spin current injects into a Kondo system.

Tuning impurity states in bilayer graphene

We study the impurity states in bilayer graphene in the unitary limit using Green's function method. Unlike in single layer graphene, the presence of impurities at two non-equivalent sites in bilayer graphene produce different impurity states which is understood as the change in the band structure due to interlayer hopping of electrons. The impurity states can also be tuned by changing the band structure of bilayer grahene through external electric field bias.

Spectral Properties of delta-Plutonium: Sensitivity to 5f Occupancy

By combining the local density approximation (LDA) with dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), we report a systematic analysis of the spectral properties of $δ$-plutonium with varying $5f$ occupancy. The LDA Hamiltonian is extracted from a tight-binding (TB) fit to full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave (FP-LAPW) calculations. The DMFT equations are solved by the exact quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method and the Hubbard-I approximation. We have shown for the first time the strong sensitivity of the spectral properties to the $5f$ occupancy, which suggests using this occupancy as a fitting parameter in addition to the Hubbard $U$. By comparing with PES data, we conclude that the ``open shell'' $5f^{5}$ configuration gives the best agreement, resolving the controversy over $5f$ ``open shell'' versus ``close shell'' atomic configurations in $δ$-Pu.

Wigner crystallization in a single and bilayer graphene

We study the possibility of Wigner crystallization in both single- and and bi-layer graphene using a real space tight binding model. In addition to verifying our earlier prediction for single layer graphene, we predict that the bilayer graphene can undergo a Wigner crystal transition at low enough carrier density thus offering a possibility of tunable and bipolar Wigner crystal. We find that aside from the Coulomb interaction of the carriers of two layers that stabilizes the charge ordered state, so does the inter layer coupling.

Observation of Competing Order in a High-$T_{c}$ Superconductor with Femtosecond Optical Pulses

We present studies of the photoexcited quasiparticle dynamics in Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$Ca$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ (Tl-2223) using femtosecond optical techniques. Deep into the superconducting state (below 40 K), a dramatic change occurs in the temporal dynamics associated with photoexcited quasiparticles rejoining the condensate. This is suggestive of entry into a coexistence phase which, as our analysis reveals, opens a gap in the density of states (in addition to the superconducting gap), and furthermore, competes with superconductivity resulting in a depression of the superconducting gap.

Time-Resolved Quasiparticle Dynamics in the Spin-Density-Wave State

Time-resolved photoinduced reflectivity is measured in the spin-density-wave (SDW) phase using itinerant antiferromagnets UMGa$_{5}$ (M=Ni, Pt). For UNiGa$_{5}$ [$T_{N}$=85 K, $Q$=($π$,$π$,$π$)], the relaxation time $τ$ shows a sharp increase at $T_{N}$ consistent with the opening of a SDW gap. For UPtGa$_{5}$ [$T_{N}$=26 K, $Q$=(0,0,$π$)], no change in $τ$ is observed at $T_{N}$ or at the lowest temperatures. We attribute this to the absence of the SDW gap at the Fermi level, due to a different modulation vector $Q$, which leads to a gapless quasiparticle spectrum. Our results challenge the conventional wisdom that a SDW phase necessarily implies a SDW gap at the Fermi level.
