Feasibility study of $CP$ Violation in $τ^{-}\to K_{S}π^{-}ν_τ$ decays at Super Tau Charm Facility

We report a feasibility study of $CP$ violation of $τ^{-}\rightarrow K_{S}π^{-} ν_τ$ decay at a Super Tau Charm Facility~(STCF).With an expected luminosity of 1~ab$^{-1}$ collected by STCF per year at a center-of-mass energy of 4.26 GeV, the statistical sensitivity for the $CP$ violation is determined to be of order $9.7\times10^{-4}$ by measuring the decay-rate difference between $τ^{+}\rightarrow K_{S}π^{+}\barν_τ$ and $τ^{-}\rightarrow K_{S}π^{-} ν_τ$. The analysis is performed using a reliable fast simulation software package, which can describe the detector responses properly and vary the responses flexibly for further optimization. Moreover, the energy-dependent efficiencies for reconstructing $τ^{-}\rightarrow K_{S}π^{-} ν_τ$ are presented and the expected $CP$ sensitivity is proportional to $1/\sqrt{\mathcal{L}}$ in the energy region from 4.0 to 5.0 GeV. The sensitivity of $CP$ violation is of order $3.1\times10^{-4}$ with 10~ab$^{-1}$ integrated luminosity, which is equivalent to ten years data taking in this energy region at STCF.

A thermal bonding method for manufacturing Micromegas detectors

For manufacturing Micromegas detectors, the "bulk" method based on photoetching, was successfully developed and widely used in nuclear and particle physics experiments. However, the complexity of the method requires a considerable number of advanced instruments and processing, limiting the accessibility of this method for production of Micromegas detectors. In view of these limitations with the bulk method, a new method based on thermal bonding technique (TBM) has been developed to manufacture Micromegas detectors in a much simplified and efficient way without etching. This paper describes the TBM in detail and presents performance of the Micromegas detectors built with the TBM. The effectiveness of this method was investigated by testing Micromegas detector prototypes built with the method. Both X-rays and electron beams were used to characterize the prototypes in a gas mixture of argon and CO2 (7%). A typical energy resolution of ~16% (full width at half maximum, FWHM) and an absolute gain greater than 10^4 were obtained with 5.9 keV X-rays. Detection efficiency greater than 98% and a spatial resolution of ~65 μm were achieved using a 5 GeV electron beam at the DESY test-beam facility. The gas gain of a Micromegas detector could reach up to 10^5 with a uniformity of better than 10% when the size of the avalanche gap was optimized thanks to the flexibility of the TBM in defining the gap. Additionally, the TBM facilitates the exploration of new detector structures based on Micromegas owing to the much-simplified operation with the method.

Optimization study of scintillator shape of electromagnetic calorimeter for Higgs factories

Scintillator-based calorimeters for experiments at Higgs factories (e.g. ILC) demand scintillator designs that can detect sufficient number of photons and have good light yield uniformity, and that they can be easily mass-produced. In order to meet these requirements, scintillator strips with a small dimple has been proposed. In our study, we measure the light yield of a dimple scintillator sample; we then compare the measurements with light tracing simulation using GEANT4. We intend to use our results to propose an optimized scintillator shape.

Timing Performance of a Micro-Channel-Plate Photomultiplier Tube

The spatial dependence of the timing performance of the R3809U-50 Micro-Channel-Plate PMT (MCP-PMT) by Hamamatsu was studied in high energy muon beams. Particle position information is provided by a GEM tracker telescope, while timing is measured relative to a second MCP-PMT, identical in construction. In the inner part of the circular active area (radius r$<$5.5\,mm) the time resolution of the two MCP-PMTs combined is better than 10~ps. The signal amplitude decreases in the outer region due to less light reaching the photocathode, resulting in a worse time resolution. The observed radial dependence is in quantitative agreement with a dedicated simulation. With this characterization, the suitability of MCP-PMTs as $\text{t}_\text{0}$ reference detectors has been validated.

Measurement of the neutron beam profile of the Back-n white neutron facility at CSNS with a Micromegas detector

The Back-n white neutron beam line, which uses back-streaming white neutrons from the spallation target of the China Spallation Neutron Source, is used for nuclear data measurements. A Micromegas-based neutron detector with two variants was specially developed to measure the beam spot distribution for this beam line. In this article, the design, fabrication, and characterization of the detector are described. The results of the detector performance tests are presented, which include the relative electron transparency, the gain and the gain uniformity, and the neutron beam profile reconstruction capability. The result of the first measurement of the Back-n neutron beam spot distribution is also presented.

Precision Higgs Physics at CEPC

The discovery of the Higgs boson with its mass around 125 GeV by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations marked the beginning of a new era in high energy physics. The Higgs boson will be the subject of extensive studies of the ongoing LHC program. At the same time, lepton collider based Higgs factories have been proposed as a possible next step beyond the LHC, with its main goal to precisely measure the properties of the Higgs boson and probe potential new physics associated with the Higgs boson. The Circular Electron Positron Collider~(CEPC) is one of such proposed Higgs factories. The CEPC is an $e^+e^-$ circular collider proposed by and to be hosted in China. Located in a tunnel of approximately 100~km in circumference, it will operate at a center-of-mass energy of 240~GeV as the Higgs factory. In this paper, we present the first estimates on the precision of the Higgs boson property measurements achievable at the CEPC and discuss implications of these measurements.

Readout Electronics for CEPC Semi-Digital Hadron Calorimeter Pre-prototype

CEPC (Circular Electron and Positron Collider) is a large experiment facility proposed by Chinese particle physics community. One of its running option is being the Higgs factory. Calorimeter is the main part of this experiment to measure the jet energy. Semi-digital hadron calorimeter (SDHCAL) is one of the options for the hadron measurement. GEM detector with its high position resolution and flexible configuration is one of the candidates for the active layer of the SDHCAL. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a feasible readout method for the GEM-based semi-digital hadron calorimeter. A small-scale prototype is designed and implemented, including front-end board (FEB) and data interface board (DIF). The prototype electronics has been tested. The equivalent RMS noise of all channels is below 0.35fC. The dynamic range is up to 500fC and the gain variation is less than 1%. The readout electronics is applied on a double-layer GEM detector with 1cm*1cm readout pad. Result indicates that the electronics works well with the detector. The detection efficiency of MIP is over 95% with 5fC threshold.

PandaX-III: Searching for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay with High Pressure $^{136}$Xe Gas Time Projection Chambers

Searching for the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) is now regarded as the topmost promising technique to explore the nature of neutrinos after the discovery of neutrino masses in oscillation experiments. PandaX-III (Particle And Astrophysical Xenon Experiment III) will search for the NLDBD of $^{136}$Xe at the China Jin Ping underground Laboratory (CJPL). In the first phase of the experiment, a high pressure gas Time Projection Chamber (TPC) will contain 200 kg, 90% $^{136}$Xe enriched gas operated at 10 bar. Fine pitch micro-pattern gas detector (Microbulk Micromegas) will be used at both ends of the TPC for the charge readout with a cathode in the middle. Charge signals can be used to reconstruct tracks of NLDBD events and provide good energy and spatial resolution. The detector will be immersed in a large water tank to ensure $\sim$5 m of water shielding in all directions. The second phase, a ton-scale experiment, will consist of five TPCs in the same water tank, with improved energy resolution and better control over backgrounds.
