An Experimental Evaluation and Investigation of Waves of Misery in R-trees

Waves of misery is a phenomenon where spikes of many node splits occur over short periods of time in tree indexes. Waves of misery negatively affect the performance of tree indexes in insertion-heavy workloads.Waves of misery have been first observed in the context of the B-tree, where these waves cause unpredictable index performance. In particular, the performance of search and index-update operations deteriorate when a wave of misery takes place, but is more predictable between the waves. This paper investigates the presence or lack of waves of misery in several R-tree variants, and studies the extent of which these waves impact the performance of each variant. Interestingly, although having poorer query performance, the Linear and Quadratic R-trees are found to be more resilient to waves of misery than both the Hilbert and R*-trees. This paper presents several techniques to reduce the impact in performance of the waves of misery for the Hilbert and R*-trees. One way to eliminate waves of misery is to force node splits to take place at regular times before nodes become full to achieve deterministic performance. The other way is that upon splitting a node, do not split it evenly but rather at different node utilization factors. This allows leaf nodes not to fill at the same pace. We study the impact of two new techniques to mitigate waves of misery after the tree index has been constructed, namely Regular Elective Splits (RES, for short) and Unequal Random Splits (URS, for short). Our experimental investigation highlights the trade-offs in performance of the introduced techniques and the pros and cons of each technique.

Deep learning for prediction of hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence after resection or liver transplantation: a discovery and validation study

This study aimed to develop a classifier of prognosis after resection or liver transplantation (LT) for HCC by directly analysing the ubiquitously available histological images using deep learning based neural networks. Nucleus map set was used to train U-net to capture the nuclear architectural information. Train set included the patients with HCC treated by resection and has a distinct outcome. LT set contained patients with HCC treated by LT. Train set and its nuclear architectural information extracted by U-net were used to train MobileNet V2 based classifier (MobileNetV2_HCC_Class), purpose-built for classifying supersized heterogeneous images. The MobileNetV2_HCC_Class maintained relative higher discriminatory power than the other factors after HCC resection or LT in the independent validation set. Pathological review showed that the tumoral areas most predictive of recurrence were characterized by presence of stroma, high degree of cytological atypia, nuclear hyperchomasia, and a lack of immune infiltration. A clinically useful prognostic classifier was developed using deep learning allied to histological slides. The classifier has been extensively evaluated in independent patient populations with different treatment, and gives consistent excellent results across the classical clinical, biological and pathological features. The classifier assists in refining the prognostic prediction of HCC patients and identifying patients who would benefit from more intensive management.

Statistical screening model for moderately coupled and dense plasmas

For atoms embedded in dense plasma, the plasma screening effects will greatly alter their structure and dynamics, and then determine the radiation transport properties of the plasma. In the present work, a new statistical model is proposed for treating electron screening effects on atoms in moderately/strongly coupled and dense plasmas, in which the three-body processes are found to significantly influence the plasma-electron density distributions and leads to a dependence of the distribution on the specific bound state of the targeted atom. As a critical check, the model is applied to simulate the emission spectra of He-like Aluminum and Chlorine in hot dense plasmas, and much better agreements of the line shifts are obtained with the experiments of Stillman et al. in 2017 and Beiersdorfer et al. in 2019 than previous calculation results. Compared with the classical molecular dynamic simulations of electron distributions in moderately coupled plasmas, the present model can better describe the low-energy electron distribution than other models and the multi-body effects are well considered. The present model provides a promising tool to reasonably treat the electron screening effect of non-equilibrium dense plasma on atoms with specific bound states, which is urgently needed in high-precision simulations of the atomic processes, plasma spectra and radiation transport properties etc.

Reevaluation of the nuclear electric quadrupole moment for 87Sr by hyperfine structures and relativistic atomic theory

The values of nuclear electric quadrupole moment are different by about 7% for 87Sr nucleus between the recommended value [N. J. Stone, At. Data Nucl. Data Tables 111-112, 1 (2016); P. Pyykko, Mol. Phys. 116, 1328 (2018)] and earlier results [e.g. A. M. Matensson-Pendrill, J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 35, 917 (2002); K. Z. Yu et al., Phys. Rev. A 70, 012506 (2004)]. In this work, we reported a new value, Q(87Sr) = 328(4) mb, making use of our calculated electric field gradients produced by electrons at nucleus in combination with experimental values for hyperfine structures of the 5s5p 3P1,2 states of the neutral Sr atom. In the framework of the multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock theory, the electron correlations were taken into account systematically so as to control the uncertainties of the electric field gradient at about 1% level. The present result is different from the recommended value, but in excellent agreement with those by Matensson-Pendrill and Yu et al.. We would recommend the present Q value as a reference for 87Sr.

Index-based, High-dimensional, Cosine Threshold Querying with Optimality Guarantees

Given a database of vectors, a cosine threshold query returns all vectors in the database having cosine similarity to a query vector above a given threshold θ. These queries arise naturally in many applications, such as document retrieval, image search, and mass spectrometry. The present paper considers the efficient evaluation of such queries, providing novel optimality guarantees and exhibiting good performance on real datasets. We take as a starting point Fagin's well-known Threshold Algorithm (TA), which can be used to answer cosine threshold queries as follows: an inverted index is first built from the database vectors during pre-processing; at query time, the algorithm traverses the index partially to gather a set of candidate vectors to be later verified for θ-similarity. However, directly applying TA in its raw form misses significant optimization opportunities. Indeed, we first show that one can take advantage of the fact that the vectors can be assumed to be normalized, to obtain an improved, tight stopping condition for index traversal and to efficiently compute it incrementally. Then we show that one can take advantage of data skewness to obtain better traversal strategies. In particular, we show a novel traversal strategy that exploits a common data skewness condition which holds in multiple domains including mass spectrometry, documents, and image databases. We show that under the skewness assumption, the new traversal strategy has a strong, near-optimal performance guarantee. The techniques developed in the paper are quite general since they can be applied to a large class of similarity functions beyond cosine.

Optical Observations of the Young Type Ic Supernova SN 2014L in M99

We present optical spectroscopic and photometric observations of the nearby type Ic supernova (SN Ic) SN 2014L. This SN was discovered by the Tsinghua-NAOC Transient Survey (TNTS) in the nearby type-Sc spiral galaxy M99 (NGC 4254). Fitting to the early-time light curve indicates that SN 2014L was detected at only a few hours after the shock breakout, and it reached a peak brightness of $M_{\rm V} = -17.73 \pm 0.28$ mag ($L= [2.06\pm 0.50] \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$) approximately 13 days later. SN 2014L shows a close resemblance to SN 2007gr in the photometric evolution, while it shows stronger absorption features of intermediate-mass elements (especially \CaII) in the early-time spectra. Based on simple modeling of the observed light curves, we derived the mass of synthesized $^{56}$Ni as $M_{\rm Ni} = 0.075 \pm 0.025 M_{\odot}$, and the mass and total energy of the ejecta as $M_{\rm ej} = 1.00 \pm 0.20 M_\odot$ and $E_{\rm ej}=1.45\pm0.25$ foe, respectively. Given these typical explosion parameters, the early detection, and the extensive observations, we suggest that SN 2014L could be a template sample for the investigation of SNe Ic.

Hyperfine induced transitions probabilities from $4f^{14}5s5p~^3\mathrm{P}^o_{0,2}$ states in Sm-like ions

The hyperfine induced $4f^{14}5s5p~^3\mathrm{P}^o_{0,2}~-~4f^{14}5s^2~^1\mathrm{S}_0$ transition probabilities for highly charged Sm-like ions are calculated in the framework of the multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method. Electron correlation, the Breit interaction and quantum electrodynamical (QED) effects are taken into account. For ions ranging from $Z=79$ to $Z=94$, $4f^{14}5s5p~^3\mathrm{P}^o_{0}$ is the first excited state, and the hyperfine induced transition is an dominant decay channel. For the $4f^{14}5s5p~^3\mathrm{P}^o_{2}$ state, the hyperfine induced transition (HIT) rates of Sm-like ions with $Z=82-94$ are reported as well as the magnetic dipole (M1) $^3\mathrm{P}^o_2 ~-~ ^3\mathrm{P}^o_1$, the electric quadrupole (E2) $^3\mathrm{P}^o_2 ~-~ ^3\mathrm{P}^o_{0,1}$, and the magnetic quadrupole (M2) $^3\mathrm{P}^o_2 ~-~ ^1\mathrm{S}_0$ transition probabilities. It is found that M1 transition from the $4f^{14}5s5p~^3\mathrm{P}^o_2$ state is the most important decay channel in this range on $Z \ge 82$.

Photoionization-driven Absorption Lines Variability in Balmer Absorption Line Quasar LBQS 1206+1052

In this paper we present an analysis of absorption line variability in mini-BAL quasar LBQS 1206+1052. The SDSS spectrum demonstrates that the absorption troughs can be divided into two components of blueshift velocities of $\sim$700 km s$^{-1}$ and $\sim$1400 km s$^{-1}$ relative to the quasar rest-frame. The former component shows rare Balmer absorption, which is an indicator of high density absorbing gas, thus the quasar is worth follow-up spectroscopic observations. Our follow-up optical and near-infrared spectra using MMT, YFOSC, TripleSpec and DBSP reveal that the strengths of the absorption lines vary for both of the two components, while the velocities do not change. We reproduce all of the spectral data by assuming that only the ionization state of the absorbing gas is variable and that all other physical properties are invariable. The variation of ionization is consistent with the variation of optical continuum from the V-band light-curve. Additionally, we can not interpret the data by assuming that the variability is due to a movement of the absorbing gas. Therefore, our analysis strongly indicates that the absorption line variability in LBQS 1206+1052 is photoionization-driven. As shown from photo-ionization simulations, the absorbing gas with blueshift velocity of $\sim$700 km s$^{-1}$ has a density in the range of $10^9$ to $10^{10}$ cm$^{-3}$ and a distance of $\sim$1 pc, and the gas with blueshift velocity of $\sim$1400 km s$^{-1}$ has a density of $10^3$ cm$^{-3}$ and a distance of $\sim$1 kpc.

Data Compression for Analytics over Large-scale In-memory Column Databases

Data compression schemes have exhibited their importance in column databases by contributing to the high-performance OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) query processing. Existing works mainly concentrate on evaluating compression schemes for disk-resident databases as data is mostly stored on disks. With the continuously decreasing of the price/capacity ratio of main memory, it is the tendencies of the times to reside data in main memory. But the discussion of data compression on in-memory databases is very vague in the literature. In this work, we present an updated discussion about whether it is valuable to use data compression techniques in memory databases. If yes, how should memory databases apply data compression schemes to maximize performance?

Sherlock: Sparse Hierarchical Embeddings for Visually-aware One-class Collaborative Filtering

Building successful recommender systems requires uncovering the underlying dimensions that describe the properties of items as well as users' preferences toward them. In domains like clothing recommendation, explaining users' preferences requires modeling the visual appearance of the items in question. This makes recommendation especially challenging, due to both the complexity and subtlety of people's 'visual preferences,' as well as the scale and dimensionality of the data and features involved. Ultimately, a successful model should be capable of capturing considerable variance across different categories and styles, while still modeling the commonalities explained by `global' structures in order to combat the sparsity (e.g. cold-start), variability, and scale of real-world datasets. Here, we address these challenges by building such structures to model the visual dimensions across different product categories. With a novel hierarchical embedding architecture, our method accounts for both high-level (colorfulness, darkness, etc.) and subtle (e.g. casualness) visual characteristics simultaneously.

Atomic Parameters for the $2p^53p~^2[3/2]_2 - 2p^53s~^2[3/2]^o_2$ Transition of Ne I relevant in nuclear physics

We calculated the magnetic dipole hyperfine interaction constants and the electric field gradients of $2p^53p~^2[3/2]_2$ and $2p^53s~^2[3/2]^o_2$ levels of Ne I by using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method. The electronic factors contributing to the isotope shifts were also estimated for the $λ= 614.5$ nm transition connecting these two states. Electron correlation and relativistic effects including the Breit interaction were investigated in details. Combining with recent measurements, we extracted the nuclear quadrupole moment values for $^{20}$Ne and $^{23}$Ne with a smaller uncertainty than the current available data. Isotope shifts in the $2p^53p~^2[3/2]_2 - 2p^53s~^2[3/2]^o_2$ transition based on the present calculated field- and mass-shift parameters are in good agreement with the experimental values. However, the field shifts in this transition are two or three orders of magnitude smaller than the mass shifts, making rather difficult to deduce changes in nuclear charge mean square radii. According to our theoretical predictions, we suggest to use instead transitions connecting levels arising from the $2p^53s$ configuration to the ground state, for which the normal mass shift and specific mass shift contributions counteract each other, producing relatively small mass shifts that are only one order of magnitude larger than relatively large field shifts, especially for the $2p^53s~^2[1/2]^o_1 - 2p^6~^1S_0$ transition.

A Luminous Peculiar Type Ia Supernova SN 2011hr: More Like SN 1991T or SN 2007if?

Photometric and spectroscopic observations of a slowly declining, luminous Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) SN 2011hr in the starburst galaxy NGC 2691 are presented. SN 2011hr is found to peak at $M_{B}=-19.84 \pm 0.40\,\rm{mag}$, with a post-maximum decline rate $Δ$m$_{15}$(B) = 0.92 $\pm$ 0.03\,$\rm{mag}$. From the maximum-light bolometric luminosity, $L=(2.30 \pm 0.90) \times 10^{43}\,\rm{erg\,s^{-1}}$, we estimate the mass of synthesized \Nifs\ in SN 2011hr to be $M(\rm{^{56}Ni})=1.11 \pm 0.43\,M_{\sun}$. SN 2011hr appears more luminous than SN 1991T at around maximum light, and the absorption features from its intermediate-mass elements (IMEs) are noticeably weaker than the latter at similar phases. Spectral modeling suggests that SN 2011hr has the IMEs of $\sim$\,0.07 M$_{\sun}$ in the outer ejecta, which is much lower than the typical value of normal SNe Ia (i.e., 0.3 -- 0.4 M$_{\sun}$) and is also lower than the value of SN 1991T (i.e., $\sim$\,0.18 M$_{\sun}$). These results indicate that SN 2011hr may arise from a Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf progenitor that experienced a more efficient burning process in the explosion. Nevertheless, it is still possible that SN 2011hr may serve as a transitional object connecting the SN 1991T-like SNe Ia with the superluminous subclass like SN 2007if given that the latter also shows very weak IMEs at all phases.

The Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope Quasar Survey: Quasar Properties from First Data Release

We present preliminary results of the quasar survey in Large Sky Area Multi- Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) first data release (DR1), which includes pilot survey and the first year regular survey. There are 3921 quasars identified with reliability, among which 1180 are new quasars discovered in the survey. These quasars are at low to median redshifts, with highest z of 4.83. We compile emission line measurements around the Hα, Hβ, Mg II, and C IV regions for the new quasars. The continuum luminosities are inferred from SDSS photo- metric data with model fitting as the spectra in DR1 are non-flux-calibrated. We also compile the virial black hole mass estimates, and flags indicating the selec- tion methods, broad absorption line quasars. The catalog and spectra for these quasars are available online. 28% of the 3921 quasars are selected with optical- infrared colours independently, indicating that the method is quite promising in completeness of quasar survey. LAMOST DR1 and the on-going quasar survey will provide valuable data in the studies of quasars.

Multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations of excitation energies, oscillator strengths and hyperfine structure constants for low-lying levels of Sm I

The multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method was employed to calculate the total and excitation energies, oscillator strengths and hyperfine structure constants for low-lying levels of Sm I. In the first-order perturbation approximation, we systematically analyzed correlation effects from each electrons and electron pairs. It was found that the core correlations are of importance for physical quantities concerned. Based on the analysis, the important configuration state wave functions were selected to constitute atomic state wave functions. By using this computational model, our excitation energies, oscillator strengths, and hyperfine structure constants are in better agreement with experimental values than earlier theoretical works.

A new method of energy calibration of position-sensitive silicon detector

An improved method of energy calibration of position-sensitive silicon detector is presented. Instead of the parabolic function used in traditional method, a new function describing the relation of position and energy is introduced and achieves better energy resolution. For the 8.088 MeV alpha decay of 213Rn calibrated by this new method, the energy resolution is determined to be about 87 keV (FWHM), which is better than the result of the traditional method, 104 keV (FWHM). In addition, different functions can be tried in the new method, which makes the calibration of various detectors with different performances possible.
