Heterogeneous Ultra-Dense Networks with Traffic Hotspots: A Unified Handover Analysis

With the ever-growing communication demands and the unceasing miniaturization of mobile devices, the Internet of Things is expanding the amount of mobile terminals to an enormous level. To deal with such numbers of communication data, plenty of base stations (BSs) need to be deployed. However, denser deployments of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) lead to more frequent handovers, which could increase network burden and degrade the users experience, especially in traffic hotspot areas. In this paper, we develop a unified framework to investigate the handover performance of wireless networks with traffic hotspots. Using the stochastic geometry, we derive the theoretical expressions of average distances and handover metrics in HetNets, where the correlations between users and BSs in hotspots are captured. Specifically, the distributions of macro cells are modeled as independent Poisson point processes (PPPs), and the two tiers of small cells outside and inside the hotspots are modeled as PPP and Poisson cluster process (PCP) separately. A modified random waypoint (MRWP) model is also proposed to eliminate the density wave phenomenon in traditional models and to increase the accuracy of handover decision. By combining the PCP and MRWP model, the distributions of distances from a typical terminal to the BSs in different tiers are derived. Afterwards, we derive the expressions of average distances from a typical terminal to different BSs, and reveal that the handover rate, handover failure rate, and ping-pong rate are deduced as the functions of BS density, scattering variance of clustered small cell, user velocity, and threshold of triggered time. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the proposed analytical model and closed-form theoretical expressions.

Massive Unsourced Random Access: Exploiting Angular Domain Sparsity

This paper investigates the unsourced random access (URA) scheme to accommodate numerous machine-type users communicating to a base station equipped with multiple antennas. Existing works adopt a slotted transmission strategy to reduce system complexity; they operate under the framework of coupled compressed sensing (CCS) which concatenates an outer tree code to an inner compressed sensing code for slot-wise message stitching. We suggest that by exploiting the MIMO channel information in the angular domain, redundancies required by the tree encoder/decoder in CCS can be removed to improve spectral efficiency, thereby an uncoupled transmission protocol is devised. To perform activity detection and channel estimation, we propose an expectation-maximization-aided generalized approximate message passing algorithm with a Markov random field support structure, which captures the inherent clustered sparsity structure of the angular domain channel. Then, message reconstruction in the form of a clustering decoder is performed by recognizing slot-distributed channels of each active user based on similarity. We put forward the slot-balanced K-means algorithm as the kernel of the clustering decoder, resolving constraints and collisions specific to the application scene. Extensive simulations reveal that the proposed scheme achieves a better error performance at high spectral efficiency compared to the CCS-based URA schemes.

Joint Hybrid and Passive RIS-Assisted Beamforming for MmWave MIMO Systems Relying on Dynamically Configured Subarrays

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems relying on hybrid beamforming structures are capable of achieving high spectral efficiency at a low hardware complexity and low power consumption. In this paper, we propose an RIS-assisted mmWave point-to-point system relying on dynamically configured sub-array connected hybrid beamforming structures. More explicitly, an energy-efficient analog beamformer relying on twin-resolution phase shifters is proposed. Then, we conceive a successive interference cancelation (SIC) based method for jointly designing the hybrid beamforming matrix of the base station (BS) and the passive beamforming matrix of the RIS. Specifically, the associated bandwidth-efficiency maximization problem is transformed into a series of sub-problems, where the sub-array of phase shifters and RIS elements are jointly optimized for maximizing each sub-array's rate. Furthermore, a greedy method is proposed for determining the phase shifter configuration of each sub-array. We then propose to update the RIS elements relying on a complex circle manifold (CCM)-based method. The proposed dynamic sub-connected structure as well as the proposed joint hybrid and passive beamforming method strikes an attractive trade-off between the bandwidth efficiency and power consumption. Our simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared to its traditional counterparts.

Weighted Sum Rate Maximization of the mmWave Cell-Free MIMO Downlink Relying on Hybrid Precoding

The cell-free MIMO concept relying on hybrid precoding constitutes an innovative technique capable of dramatically increasing the network capacity of millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. It dispenses with the cell boundary of conventional multi-cell MIMO systems, while drastically reducing the power consumption by limiting the number of radio frequency (RF) chains at the access points (APs). In this paper, we aim for maximizing the weighted sum rate (WSR) of mmWave cell-free MIMO systems by conceiving a low-complexity hybrid precoding algorithm. We formulate the WSR optimization problem subject to the transmit power constraint for each AP and the constant-modulus constraint for the phase shifters of the analog precoders. A block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is proposed for iteratively solving the problem. In each iteration, the classic Lagrangian multiplier method and the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) method are combined for obtaining near-optimal hybrid analog/digital precoding matrices. Furthermore, we extend our proposed algorithm for deriving closed-form expressions for the precoders of fully digital cell-free MIMO systems. Moreover, we present the convergency analysis and complexity analysis of our proposed method. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the algorithms proposed for both fully digital and hybrid precoding matrices.

Joint Device Detection, Channel Estimation, and Data Decoding with Collision Resolution for MIMO Massive Unsourced Random Access

In this paper, we investigate a joint device activity detection (DAD), channel estimation (CE), and data decoding (DD) algorithm for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) massive unsourced random access (URA). Different from the state-of-the-art slotted transmission scheme, the data in the proposed framework is split into only two parts. A portion of the data is coded by compressed sensing (CS) and the rest is low-density-parity-check (LDPC) coded. In addition to being part of the data, information bits in the CS phase also undertake the task of interleaving pattern design and channel estimation (CE). The principle of interleave-division multiple access (IDMA) is exploited to reduce the interference among devices in the LDPC phase. Based on the belief propagation (BP) algorithm, a low-complexity iterative message passing (MP) algorithm is utilized to decode the data embedded in these two phases separately. Moreover, combined with successive interference cancellation (SIC), the proposed joint DAD-CE-DD algorithm is performed to further improve performance by utilizing the belief of each other. Additionally, based on the energy detection (ED) and sliding window protocol (SWP), we develop a collision resolution protocol to handle the codeword collision, a common issue in the URA system. In addition to the complexity reduction, the proposed algorithm exhibits a substantial performance enhancement compared to the state-of-the-art in terms of efficiency and accuracy.

Eavesdropping Risk Evaluation on Terahertz Wireless Channels in Atmospheric Turbulence

Wireless networks operating at terahertz (THz) frequencies have been proposed as a promising candidate to support the ever-increasing capacity demand, which cannot be satisfied with existing radio-frequency (RF) technology. On the other hand, it likely will serve as backbone infrastructure and could therefore be an attractive target for eavesdropping attacks. Compared with regular RF spectrum, wireless channels in the THz range could be less vulnerable to interceptions because of their high beam directionality and small signal coverage. However, a risk for eavesdropping can still exist due to the multipath effects caused by unintended scattering. In this work, an eavesdropping risk for THz channel passing atmospheric turbulences and producing compromising emissions is investigated from a physical layer perspective. A model combining signal attenuation due to turbulence, gaseous absorption and beam divergence, is developed for prediction of deterministic and probabilistic signal leakages. The secrecy capacity and outage probability of the THz channel are derived and analyzed with respect to variations of the turbulence strength and other channels characteristics. The dependence of the channel performance on the eavesdropper's position is investigated with respect to the maximum safe data transmission rate (MSR) and the signal leakage region. Design results for THz channels are provided to minimize an eavesdropping risk at physical layer.

Antenna Array Diagnosis for Millimeter-Wave MIMO Systems

The densely packed antennas of millimeter-Wave (mmWave) MIMO systems are often blocked by the rain, snow, dust and even by fingers, which will change the channel's characteristics and degrades the system's performance. In order to solve this problem, we propose a cross-entropy inspired antenna array diagnosis detection (CE-AAD) technique by exploiting the correlations of adjacent antennas, when blockages occur at the transmitter. Then, we extend the proposed CE-AAD algorithm to the case, where blockages occur at transmitter and receiver simultaneously. Our simulation results show that the proposed CE-AAD algorithm outperforms its traditional counterparts.

Wideband Channel Estimation for IRS-Aided Systems in the Face of Beam Squint

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) improve both the bandwidth and energy efficiency of wideband communication systems by using low-cost passive elements for reflecting the impinging signals with adjustable phase shifts. To realize the full potential of IRS-aided systems, having accurate channel state information (CSI) is indispensable, but it is challenging to acquire, since these passive devices cannot carry out transmit/receive signal processing. The existing channel estimation methods conceived for wideband IRS-aided communication systems only consider the channel's frequency selectivity, but ignore the effect of beam squint, despite its severe performance degradation. Hence we fill this gap and conceive wideband channel estimation for IRS-aided communication systems by explicitly taking the effect of beam squint into consideration. We demonstrate that the mutual correlation function between the spatial steering vectors and the cascaded two-hop channel reflected by the IRS has two peaks, which leads to a pair of estimated angles for a single propagation path, due to the effect of beam squint. One of these two estimated angles is the frequency-independent `actual angle', while the other one is the frequency-dependent `false angle'. To reduce the influence of false angles on channel estimation, we propose a twin-stage orthogonal matching pursuit (TS-OMP) algorithm.

Passive Beamforming Design for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted MIMO Systems

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) constitute passive devices, which are capable of adjusting the phase shifts of their reflected signals, and hence they are suitable for passive beamforming. In this paper, we conceive their design with the active beamforming action of multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) systems used at the access points (APs) for improving the beamforming gain, where both the APs and users are equipped with multiple antennas. Firstly, we decouple the optimization problem and design the active beamforming for a given IRS configuration. Then we transform the optimization problem of the IRS-based passive beamforming design into a tractable non-convex quadratically constrained quadratic program (QCQP). For solving the transformed problem, we give an approximate solution based on the technique of widely used semidefinite relaxation (SDR). We also propose a low-complexity iterative solution. We further prove that it can converge to a locally optimal value. Finally, considering the practical scenario of discrete phase shifts at the IRS, we give the quantization design for IRS elements on basis of the two solutions. Our simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed solutions over the relevant benchmarks.

Deep Learning based Channel Extrapolation for Large-Scale Antenna Systems: Opportunities, Challenges and Solutions

With the depletion of spectrum, wireless communication systems turn to exploit large antenna arrays to achieve the degree of freedom in space domain, such as millimeter wave massive multi-input multioutput (MIMO), reconfigurable intelligent surface assisted communications and cell-free massive MIMO. In these systems, how to acquire accurate channel state information (CSI) is difficult and becomes a bottleneck of the communication links. In this article, we introduce the concept of channel extrapolation that relies on a small portion of channel parameters to infer the remaining channel parameters. Since the substance of channel extrapolation is a mapping from one parameter subspace to another, we can resort to deep learning (DL), a powerful learning architecture, to approximate such mapping function. Specifically, we first analyze the requirements, conditions and challenges for channel extrapolation. Then, we present three typical extrapolations over the antenna dimension, the frequency dimension, and the physical terminal, respectively. We also illustrate their respective principles, design challenges and DL strategies. It will be seen that channel extrapolation could greatly reduce the transmission overhead and subsequently enhance the performance gains compared with the traditional strategies. In the end, we provide several potential research directions on channel extrapolation for future intelligent communications systems.

Deep Multimodal Learning: Merging Sensory Data for Massive MIMO Channel Prediction

Existing work in intelligent communications has recently made preliminary attempts to utilize multi-source sensing information (MSI) to improve the system performance. However, the research on MSI aided intelligent communications has not yet explored how to integrate and fuse the multimodal sensory data, which motivates us to develop a systematic framework for wireless communications based on deep multimodal learning (DML). In this paper, we first present complete descriptions and heuristic understandings on the framework of DML based wireless communications, where core design choices are analyzed in the view of communications. Then, we develop several DML based architectures for channel prediction in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems that leverage various modality combinations and fusion levels. The case study of massive MIMO channel prediction offers an important example that can be followed in developing other DML based communication technologies. Simulations results demonstrate that the proposed DML framework can effectively exploit the constructive and complementary information of multimodal sensory data in various wireless communication scenarios.

Dynamic Hybrid Precoding Relying on Twin-Resolution Phase Shifters in Millimeter-Wave Communication Systems

Hybrid analog/digital precoding in millimeter-wave (mmWave) multi-input multi-ouput (MIMO) systems is capable of achieving the near-optimal full-digital performance at reduced hardware cost and power consumption compared to its full-RF digital counterpart. However, having numerous phase shifters is still costly, especially when the phase shifters are of high resolution. In this paper, we propose a novel twin-resolution phase-shifter network for mmWave MIMO systems, which reduces the power consumption of an entirely high-resolution network, whilst mitigating the severe array gain reduction of an entirely low-resolution network. The connections between the twin phase shifters having different resolutions and the antennas are either fixed or dynamically configured. In the latter, we jointly design the phase-shifter network and the hybrid precoding matrix, where the phase of each entry in the analog precoding matrix can be dynamically designed according to the required resolution. This method is slightly modified for the fixed network's hybrid precoding matrix. Furthermore, we extend the proposed method to multi-user MIMO systems and provide its performance analysis. Our simulation results show that the proposed dynamic hybrid precoding method strikes an attractive performance vs. power consumption trade-off.

Hybrid Beamforming for Terahertz Multi-Carrier Systems over Frequency Selective Fading

We propose novel hybrid beamforming schemes for the terahertz (THz) wireless system where a multi-antenna base station (BS) communicates with a multi-antenna user over frequency selective fading. Here, we assume that the BS employs sub-connected hybrid beamforming and multi-carrier modulation to deliver ultra high data rate. We consider a three-dimensional wideband THz channel by incorporating the joint effect of molecular absorption, high sparsity, and multi-path fading, and consider the carrier frequency offset in multi-carrier systems. With this model, we first propose a two-stage wideband hybrid beamforming scheme which includes a beamsteering codebook searching algorithm for analog beamforming and a regularized channel inversion method for digital beamforming. We then propose a novel wideband hybrid beamforming scheme with two digital beamformers. In this scheme, an additional digital beamformer is developed to compensate for the performance loss caused by the constant-amplitude hardware constraints and the difference of channel matrices among subcarriers. Furthermore, we consider imperfect channel state information (CSI) and propose a probabilistic robust hybrid beamforming scheme to combat channel estimation errors. Numerical results demonstrate the benefits of our proposed schemes for the sake of practical implementation, especially considering its high spectral efficiency, low complexity, and robustness against imperfect CSI.

On the Secrecy of UAV Systems With Linear Trajectory

By observing the fact that moving in a straight line is a common flying behavior of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in normal applications, e.g., power line inspections, and air patrols along with highway/streets/borders, in this paper we investigate the secrecy outage performance of a UAV system with linear trajectory, where a UAV ($S$) flies in a straight line and transmits its information over the downlink to a legitimate receiver ($D$) on the ground while an eavesdropping UAV ($E$) trying to overhear the information delivery between $S$ and $D$. Meanwhile, some information is delivered to $S$ over the uplink from $D$, such as commanding messages to control $S$'s detecting operations, which can also be eavesdropped by $E$. The locations of $S$, $D$, and $E$ are randomly distributed. We first characterize the statistical characteristics (including cumulative distribution functions and probability density function) of the received signal-to-noise ratio over both downlink and uplink, and then the closed-form analytical expressions for the lower boundary of the secrecy outage probability of both downlink and uplink have also been derived accordingly. Finally, Monte-Carlo simulations are given to testify our proposed analytical models.

When Full-Duplex Transmission Meets Intelligent Reflecting Surface: Opportunities and Challenges

Full-duplex (FD) transmission has already been regarded and developed as a promising method to improve the utilization efficiency of the limited spectrum resource, as transmitting and receiving are allowed to simultaneously occur on the same frequency band. Nowadays, benefiting from the recent development of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), some unique electromagnetic (EM) functionalities, like wavefront shaping, focusing, anomalous reflection, absorption, frequency shifting, and nonreciprocity can be realized by soft-controlled elements at the IRS, showing the capability of reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment with no hardware cost and nearly zero energy consumption. To jointly exploit the virtues of both FD transmission and IRS, in this article we first introduce several EM functionalities of IRS that are profitable for FD transmission; then, some designs of FD-enabled IRS systems are proposed and discussed, followed by numerical results to demonstrate the obtained benefits. Finally, the challenges and open problems of realizing FD-enabled IRS systems are outlined and elaborated upon.

Beam Selection for Wideband Millimeter Wave MIMO Relying on Lens Antenna Arrays

Beamspace multi-input multi-output (MIMO) relying on lens antenna arrays can significantly reduce the number of radio-frequency chains in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems through beam selection. However, the beamforming gain is actually frequency-dependent in wideband mmWave MIMO systems. This phenomenon is called beam squint, which will deteriorate the system's performance when traditional beam selection methods are used. To solve this problem, we propose a wideband beam selection method for mmWave MIMO systems relying on lens antenna arrays. Firstly, we select one beam with the maximal energy averaged over the whole band for each user and then we sequentially select the beams that contribute the most to the sum-rate. Performance analysis of the proposed wideband beam selection method is also presented. Numerical results show that the proposed method achieves higher sum-rate and energy efficiency compared with its traditional counterparts.

Resource Allocation for Secure Multi-UAV Communication Systems with Multi-Eavesdropper

In this paper, we study the resource allocation and trajectory design for secure unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled communication systems, where multiple multi-purpose UAV base stations are dispatched to provide secure communications to multiple legitimate ground users (GUs) in the existence of multiple eavesdroppers (Eves). Specifically, by leveraging orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), active UAV base stations can communicate to their desired ground users via the assigned subcarriers while idle UAV base stations can serve as jammer simultaneously for communication security provisioning. To achieve fairness in secure communication, we maximize the average minimum secrecy rate per user by jointly optimizing the communication/jamming subcarrier allocation policy and the trajectory of UAVs, while taking into account the constraints on the minimum safety distance among multiple UAVs, the maximum cruising speed, the initial/final locations, and the existence of cylindrical no-fly zones (NFZs). The design is formulated as a mixed integer non-convex optimization problem which is generally intractable. Subsequently, a computationally-efficient iterative algorithm is proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution. Simulation results illustrate that the performance of the proposed iterative algorithm can significantly improve the average minimum secrecy rate compared to various baseline schemes.

We propose a semi-supervised architecture, which combines both unsupervised framework of using image consistency and supervised framework of dense depth completion. The latter provides full-image depth as supervision for the former. Ego-motion from navigation system is also embedded into the unsupervised framework as output supervision of an inner temporal transform network, making monocular depth estimation better. In the evaluation, we show that our proposed model outperforms other approaches on depth estimation.
