Voxel-FPN: multi-scale voxel feature aggregation in 3D object detection from point clouds

Object detection in point cloud data is one of the key components in computer vision systems, especially for autonomous driving applications. In this work, we present Voxel-FPN, a novel one-stage 3D object detector that utilizes raw data from LIDAR sensors only. The core framework consists of an encoder network and a corresponding decoder followed by a region proposal network. Encoder extracts multi-scale voxel information in a bottom-up manner while decoder fuses multiple feature maps from various scales in a top-down way. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method has better performance on extracting features from point data and demonstrates its superiority over some baselines on the challenging KITTI-3D benchmark, obtaining good performance on both speed and accuracy in real-world scenarios.

Channel Estimation for Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) Massive MIMO

Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation outperforms orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in high-mobility scenarios. One challenge for OTFS massive MIMO is downlink channel estimation due to the large number of base station antennas. In this paper, we propose a 3D structured orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm based channel estimation technique to solve this problem. First, we show that the OTFS MIMO channel exhibits 3D structured sparsity: normal sparsity along the delay dimension, block sparsity along the Doppler dimension, and burst sparsity along the angle dimension. Based on the 3D structured channel sparsity, we then formulate the downlink channel estimation problem as a sparse signal recovery problem. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve accurate channel state information with low pilot overhead.

Joint Trajectory and Resource Allocation Design for UAV Communication Systems

In this paper, we investigate resource allocation design for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled communication systems, where a UAV is dispatched to provide communications to multiple user nodes. Our objective is to maximize the communication system throughput by jointly optimizing the subcarrier allocation policy and the trajectory of the UAV, while taking into account the minimum required data rate for each user node, no-fly zones (NFZs), the maximum UAV cruising speed, and initial/final UAV locations. The design is formulated as a mixed integer non-convex optimization problem which is generally intractable. Subsequently, a computationally-efficient iterative algorithm is proposed to obtain a locally optimal solution. Simulation results illustrate that the performance of the proposed iterative algorithm approaches closely to that of the system without NFZ. In addition, the proposed algorithm can achieve a significant throughput gain compared to various benchmark schemes.

Achieve Sustainable Ultra-Dense Heterogeneous Networks for 5G

Due to the exponentially increased demands of mobile data traffic, e.g., a 1000-fold increase in traffic demand from 4G to 5G, network densification is considered as a key mechanism in the evolution of cellular networks, and ultra-dense heterogeneous network (UDHN) is a promising technique to meet the requirements of explosive data traffic in 5G networks. In the UDHN, base station is brought closer and closer to users through densely deploying small cells, which would result in extremely high spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. In this article, we first present a potential network architecture for the UDHN, and then propose a generalized orthogonal/non-orthogonal random access scheme to improve the network efficiency while reducing the signaling overhead. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. Finally, we present some of the key challenges of the UDHN.

NOMA based Calibration for Large-Scale Spaceborne Antenna Arrays

In the parallel calibration for transmitting phased arrays, the calibration receiver must separate the signals belonging to different antenna elements to avoid mutual interference. Existing algorithms encode different antenna elements' radiation with orthogonal signature codes, but these algorithms are far from desired for large-scale spaceborne antenna arrays. Considering the strictly limited resources on satellites, to improve hardware efficiency of large-scale spaceborne antenna arrays, in this work inspired by the idea of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) we design a series of non-orthogonal signature codes for different antenna elements by Cyclically Shifting an m-Sequence (CSmS) with different offsets named as CSmS-NOMA signaling. This design can strike an elegant balance between the performance and complexity and is very suitable for large-scale spaceborne antenna arrays. It is shown that no matter how many antenna elements there are to be calibrated simultaneously, CSmS-NOMA signaling needs only one calibrating waveform generator and one matched filter. Hence it is much more efficient than the existing fully orthogonal schemes. In order to evaluate the achievable calibration accuracy, a unified theoretical framework is developed based on which the relationship between calibration accuracy and signal to noise ratio (SNR) has been clearly revealed. Furthermore, a hardware experiment platform is also built to assess the theoretical work. For all the considered scenarios, it can be concluded that the theoretical, simulated and experimental results coincide with each other perfectly.

Dynamic Spectrum Leasing with Two Sellers

This paper studies dynamic spectrum leasing in a cognitive radio network. There are two spectrum sellers, who are two primary networks, each with an amount of licensed spectrum bandwidth. When a seller has some unused spectrum, it would like to lease the unused spectrum to secondary users. A coordinator helps to perform the spectrum leasing stage-by-stage. As the two sellers may have different leasing period, there are three epochs, in which seller 1 has spectrum to lease in Epochs II and III, while seller 2 has spectrum to lease in Epochs I and II. Each seller needs to decide how much spectrum it should lease to secondary users in each stage of its leasing period, with a target at revenue maximization. It is shown that, when the two sellers both have spectrum to lease (i.e., in Epoch II), the spectrum leasing can be formulated as a non-cooperative game. Nash equilibria of the game are found in closed form. Solutions of the two users in the three epochs are derived.

Device-free Localization using Received Signal Strength Measurements in Radio Frequency Network

Device-free localization (DFL) based on the received signal strength (RSS) measurements of radio frequency (RF)links is the method using RSS variation due to the presence of the target to localize the target without attaching any device. The majority of DFL methods utilize the fact the link will experience great attenuation when obstructed. Thus that localization accuracy depends on the model which describes the relationship between RSS loss caused by obstruction and the position of the target. The existing models is too rough to explain some phenomenon observed in the experiment measurements. In this paper, we propose a new model based on diffraction theory in which the target is modeled as a cylinder instead of a point mass. The proposed model can will greatly fits the experiment measurements and well explain the cases like link crossing and walking along the link line. Because the measurement model is nonlinear, particle filtering tracing is used to recursively give the approximate Bayesian estimation of the position. The posterior Cramer-Rao lower bound (PCRLB) of proposed tracking method is also derived. The results of field experiments with 8 radio sensors and a monitored area of 3.5m 3.5m show that the tracking error of proposed model is improved by at least 36 percent in the single target case and 25 percent in the two targets case compared to other models.

A Percolation based M2M Networking Architecture for Data Transmission and Routing

We propose a percolation based M2M networking architecture and its data transmission method. The proposed network architecture can be server-free and router-free, which allows us to operate routing efficiently with percolations based on six degrees of separation theory in small world network modeling. The data transmission can be divided into two phases: routing and data transmission phases. In the routing phase, probe packets will be transmitted and forwarded in the network thus multiple paths are selected and performed based on the constriction of the maximum hop number. In the second phase, the information will be encoded, say, with the fountain codes, and transmitted using the paths generated in the first phase. In such a way, an efficient routing and data transmission mechanism can be built, which allow us to construct a low-cost, flexible and ubiquitous network. Such a networking architecture and data transmission can be used in many M2M communications, such as the stub network of internet of things, and deep space networking, and so on.

Multichannel RSS-based Device-Free Localization with Wireless Sensor Network

RSS-based device-free localization (DFL) is a very promising technique which allows localizing the target without attaching any electronic tags in wireless environments. In cluttered indoor environments, the performance of DFL degrades due to multipath interference. In this paper, we propose a multichannel obstructed link detection method based on the RSS variation on difference channels. Multichannel detection is proved to be very effective in multipath environments compared to the single channel detection. We also propose a new localization method termed as robust weighted least square (RWLS) method. RWLS first use spatial property to eliminate the interference links and then employ WLS method to localize the target. Since the spatial detection relies on the unknown position of the target. A coarse position estimation of target is also presented. RWLS is robust to interference links and has low computation complexity. Results from real experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
