Workhorse minimally-empirical dispersion-corrected density functional, with tests for weakly-bound systems: r$^{2}$SCAN+rVV10

SCAN+rVV10 has been demonstrated to be a versatile van der Waals (vdW) density functional that delivers good predictions of both energetic and structural properties for many types of bonding. Recently, the r$^{2}$SCAN functional has been devised as a revised form of SCAN with improved numerical stability. In this work, we refit the rVV10 functional to optimize the r$^{2}$SCAN+rVV10 vdW density functional, and test its performance for molecular interactions and layered materials. Our molecular tests demonstrate that r$^{2}$SCAN+rVV10 outperforms its predecessor SCAN+rVV10 in both efficiency (numerical stability) and accuracy. This good performance is also found in lattice constant predictions. In comparison with benchmark results from higher-level theories or experiments, r$^{2}$SCAN+rVV10 yields excellent interlayer binding energies and phonon dispersions for layered materials.

The Lieb-Oxford Lower Bounds on the Coulomb Energy, Their Importance to Electron Density Functional Theory, and a Conjectured Tight Bound on Exchange

Lieb and Oxford (1981) derived rigorous lower bounds, in the form of local functionals of the electron density, on the indirect part of the Coulomb repulsion energy. The greatest lower bound for a given electron number N depends monotonically upon N, and the N-> infinity limit is a bound for all N. These bounds have been shown to apply to the exact density functionals for the exchange- and exchange-correlation energies that must be approximated for an accurate and computationally efficient description of atoms, molecules, and solids. A tight bound on the exact exchange energy has been derived therefrom for two-electron ground states, and is conjectured to apply to all spin-unpolarized electronic ground states. Some of these and other exact constraints have been used to construct two generations of non-empirical density functionals beyond the local density approximation: the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) generalized gradient approximation (GGA), and the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA.

Topological spiral magnetism in the Weyl semimetal SmAlSi

Weyl electrons are intensely studied due to novel charge transport phenomena such as chiral anomaly, Fermi arcs, and photogalvanic effect. Recent theoretical works suggest that Weyl electrons can also participate in magnetic interactions, and the Weyl-mediated indirect exchange coupling between local moments is proposed as a new mechanism of spiral magnetism that involves chiral electrons. Despite reports of incommensurate and non-collinear magnetic ordering in Weyl semimetals, an actual spiral order has remained hitherto undetected. Here, we present evidence of Weyl-mediated spiral magnetism in SmAlSi from neutron diffraction, transport, and thermodynamic data. We show that the spiral order in SmAlSi results from the nesting between topologically non-trivial Fermi pockets and weak magnetocrystalline anisotropy, unlike related materials (Ce,Pr,Nd)AlSi, where a strong anisotropy prevents the spins from freely rotating. We map the magnetic phase diagram of SmAlSi and reveal an A-phase where topological magnetic excitations may exist. This is corroborated by the observation of a topological Hall effect within the A-phase.

Critical role of magnetic moments in heavy-fermion materials: revisiting mysteries of SmB$_{6}$

Heavy-fermion family exhibits fascinating and often puzzling properties due to the presence of open-shell $f$ ions and the complexity of the associated charge, orbital, and spin degrees of freedom. SmB$_6 $ is a prototypical heavy-fermion compound that is electrically insulating but yet it displays quantum oscillations, which are a telltale signature of the metallic state. Adding to the enigma is the possibility that SmB$_6$ is a topological Kondo insulator. Here, by treating the spin degree of freedom on an equal footing with other degrees of freedom using the parameter-free strongly-constrained and appropriately-normed (SCAN) density functional, we explore the ground-state electronic structure of SmB$_{6}$. A number of competing magnetic phases lying very closely in energy are found, indicating the key role of spin fluctuations in the material. The computed band structure, crystal-field splittings in the $f$-electron complex, the heavy effective electron mass at the Fermi energy, and the large specific heat are all in good agreement with the corresponding experimental results. In particular, our predicted FS explains the experimentally observed bulk quantum oscillations as well as the low electrical conductivity of SmB$_{6}$. The topological Kondo state of SmB$_6$ is shown to be robust regardless of its magnetic configuration. The excellent performance of SCAN in heavy-fermion systems is explained in terms of its ability to treat self-interaction errors and symmetry breaking within the framework of the density functional theory. Our study provides a new approach for modeling heavy-fermion materials.

Exact constraints and appropriate norms in machine learned exchange-correlation functionals

Machine learning techniques have received growing attention as an alternative strategy for developing general-purpose density functional approximations, augmenting the historically successful approach of human designed functionals derived to obey mathematical constraints known for the exact exchange-correlation functional. More recently efforts have been made to reconcile the two techniques, integrating machine learning and exact-constraint satisfaction. We continue this integrated approach, designing a deep neural network that exploits the exact constraint and appropriate norm philosophy to deorbitalize the strongly constrained and appropriately normed SCAN functional. The deep neural network is trained to replicate the SCAN functional from only electron density and local derivative information, avoiding use of the orbital dependent kinetic energy density. The performance and transferability of the machine learned functional are demonstrated for molecular and periodic systems.

Audio-Visual Wake Word Spotting System For MISP Challenge 2021

This paper presents the details of our system designed for the Task 1 of Multimodal Information Based Speech Processing (MISP) Challenge 2021. The purpose of Task 1 is to leverage both audio and video information to improve the environmental robustness of far-field wake word spotting. In the proposed system, firstly, we take advantage of speech enhancement algorithms such as beamforming and weighted prediction error (WPE) to address the multi-microphone conversational audio. Secondly, several data augmentation techniques are applied to simulate a more realistic far-field scenario. For the video information, the provided region of interest (ROI) is used to obtain visual representation. Then the multi-layer CNN is proposed to learn audio and visual representations, and these representations are fed into our two-branch attention-based network which can be employed for fusion, such as transformer and conformed. The focal loss is used to fine-tune the model and improve the performance significantly. Finally, multiple trained models are integrated by casting vote to achieve our final 0.091 score.

Sensitivity of the electronic and magnetic structures of cuprate superconductors to density functional approximations

We discuss the crystal, electronic, and magnetic structures of $\mathrm{La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}}$ (LSCO) for $x=0.0$ and $x=0.25$ employing 13 density functional approximations, representing the local, semi-local, and hybrid exchange-correlation approximations within the Perdew-Schmidt hierarchy. The meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) class of functionals is found to perform well in capturing the key properties of LSCO, a prototypical high-temperature cuprate superconductor. In contrast, the local-spin-density approximation, GGA, and the hybrid density functional fail to capture the metal-insulator transition under doping.

Construction of meta-GGA functionals through restoration of exact constraint adherence to regularized SCAN functionals

The SCAN meta-GGA exchange-correlation functional [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 036402 (2015)] is constructed as a chemical environment-determined interpolation between two separate energy densities: one describes single orbital electron densities accurately, and another describes slowly-varying densities accurately. To conserve constraints known for the exact exchange-correlation functional, the derivatives of this interpolation vanish in the slowly-varying limit. While theoretically convenient, this choice introduces numerical challenges that degrade the functional's efficiency. We have recently reported a modification to the SCAN functional, termed r$^2$SCAN [J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 11, 8208 (2020)] that introduces two regularizations into SCAN which improve its numerical performance at the expense of not recovering the fourth order term of the slowly-varying density gradient expansion for exchange. Here we show the derivation of a progression of functionals (rSCAN, r++SCAN, r$^2$SCAN, and r$^4$SCAN) with increasing adherence to exact conditions while maintaining a smooth interpolation. The greater smoothness of r$^2$SCAN seems to lead to better general accuracy than the additional exact constraint of SCAN or r$^4$SCAN does.

Reliable lattice dynamics from an efficient density functional

First principles predictions of lattice dynamics are of vital importance for a broad range of topics in materials science and condensed matter physics. The large-scale nature of lattice dynamics calculations and the desire to design novel materials with distinct properties demands that first principles predictions are accurate, transferable, efficient, and reliable for a wide variety of materials. In this work, we demonstrate that the recently constructed r2SCAN density functional meets this need for general systems by demonstrating phonon dispersions for typical systems with distinct chemical characteristics. The functional's performance opens a door for phonon-mediated materials discovery from first principles calculations.

Semantic Data Augmentation for End-to-End Mandarin Speech Recognition

End-to-end models have gradually become the preferred option for automatic speech recognition (ASR) applications. During the training of end-to-end ASR, data augmentation is a quite effective technique for regularizing the neural networks. This paper proposes a novel data augmentation technique based on semantic transposition of the transcriptions via syntax rules for end-to-end Mandarin ASR. Specifically, we first segment the transcriptions based on part-of-speech tags. Then transposition strategies, such as placing the object in front of the subject or swapping the subject and the object, are applied on the segmented sentences. Finally, the acoustic features corresponding to the transposed transcription are reassembled based on the audio-to-text forced-alignment produced by a pre-trained ASR system. The combination of original data and augmented one is used for training a new ASR system. The experiments are conducted on the Transformer[2] and Conformer[3] based ASR. The results show that the proposed method can give consistent performance gain to the system. Augmentation related issues, such as comparison of different strategies and ratios for data combination are also investigated.

A paradigm system for strong correlation and charge transfer competition

In chemistry and condensed matter physics the solution of simple paradigm systems, such as the hydrogen atom and the uniform electron gas, plays a critical role in understanding electron behaviors and developing electronic structure methods. The H$_2$ molecule is a paradigm system for strong correlation with a spin-singlet ground state that localizes the two electrons onto opposite protons at dissociation. We extend H$_2$ to a new paradigm system by using fractional nuclear charges to break the left-right nuclear symmetry, thereby enabling the competition between strong correlation and charge transfer that drives the exotic properties of many materials. This modification lays a foundation for improving practical electronic structure theories and provides an extendable playground for analyzing how the competition appears and evolves.

r2SCAN-D4: Dispersion corrected meta-generalized gradient approximation for general chemical applications

We combine a regularized variant of the strongly constrained and appropriately normed semilocal density functional [J. Sun, A. Ruzsinszky, and J. P. Perdew, Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 036402 (2015)] with the latest generation semi-classical London dispersion correction. The resulting density functional approximation r2SCAN-D4 has the speed of generalized gradient approximations while approaching the accuracy of hybrid functionals for general chemical applications. We demonstrate its numerical robustness in real-life settings and benchmark molecular geometries, general main group and organo-metallic thermochemistry, as well as non-covalent interactions in supramolecular complexes and molecular crystals. Main group and transition metal bond lengths have errors of just 0.8%, which is competitive with hybrid functionals for main group molecules and outperforms them for transition metal complexes. The weighted mean absolute deviation (WTMAD2) on the large GMTKN55 database of chemical properties is exceptionally small at 7.5 kcal/mol. This also holds for metal organic reactions with an MAD of 3.3 kcal/mol. The versatile applicability to organic and metal-organic systems transfers to condensed systems, where lattice energies of molecular crystals are within chemical accuracy (errors <1 kcal/mol).

$f$-electron and magnetic ordering effects in nickelates LaNiO$_2$ and NdNiO$_2$: remarkable role of the cuprate-like $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ band

Recent discovery of superconductivity in the doped infinite-layer nickelates has renewed interest in understanding the nature of high-temperature superconductivity more generally. The low-energy electronic structure of the parent compound NdNiO$_{2}$, the role of electronic correlations in driving superconductivity, and the possible relationship betweeen the cuprates and the nickelates are still open questions. Here, by comparing LaNiO$_2$ and NdNiO$_2$ systematically within a parameter-free density functional framework, all-electron first-principles framework, we reveal the role Nd 4$f$ electrons in shaping the ground state of pristine NdNiO$_2$. Strong similarities are found between the electronic structures of LaNiO$_2$ and NdNiO$_2$, except for the effects of the 4$f$-electrons. Hybridization between the Nd 4$f$ and Ni 3$d$ orbitals is shown to significantly modify the Fermi surfaces of various magnetic states. In contrast, the competition between the magnetically ordered phases depends mainly on the gaps in the Ni $d_{x2-y2}$ band, so that the ground state in LaNiO$_2$ and NdNiO$_2$ turns out to be striking similarity to that of the cuprates. The $d-p$ band-splitting is found to be much larger while the intralayer 3$d$ ion-exchange coupling is smaller in the nickelates compared to the cuprates. Our estimated value of the on-site Hubbard $U$ is similar to that in the cuprates, but the value of the Hund's coupling $J_H$ is found to be sensitive to the Nd magnetic moment. The exchange coupling $J$ in NdNiO$_2$ is only half as large as in the curpates, which may explain why $T_c$ in the nickelates is half as large as the cuprates.

Accurate and numerically efficient r$^2$SCAN meta-generalized gradient approximation

The recently proposed rSCAN functional [J. Chem. Phys. 150, 161101 (2019)] is a regularized form of the SCAN functional [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 036402 (2015)] that improves SCAN's numerical performance at the expense of breaking constraints known from the exact exchange-correlation functional. We construct a new meta-generalized gradient approximation by restoring exact constraint adherence to rSCAN. The resulting functional maintains rSCAN's numerical performance while restoring the transferable accuracy of SCAN.

Interpretations of ground-state symmetry breaking and strong correlation in wavefunction and density functional theories

Strong correlations within a symmetry-unbroken ground-state wavefunction can show up in approximate density functional theory as symmetry-broken spin-densities or total densities, which are sometimes observable. They can arise from soft modes of fluctuations (sometimes collective excitations) such as spin-density or charge-density waves at non-zero wavevector. In this sense, an approximate density functional for exchange and correlation that breaks symmetry can be more revealing (albeit less accurate) than an exact functional that does not. The examples discussed here include the stretched H$_2$ molecule, antiferromagnetic solids, and the static charge-density wave/Wigner crystal phase of a low-density jellium. It is shown that (and in what sense) the static charge density wave is a soft plasmon.

Symmetry-Breaking Polymorphous Descriptions for Complex Materials without Interelectronic U

Correlated materials with open-shell d- and f-ions having degenerate band edge states show a rich variety of interesting properties ranging from metal-insulator transition to unconventional superconductivity. The textbook view for the electronic structure of these materials is that mean-field approaches are inappropriate, as the interelectronic interaction U is required to open a band gap between the occupied and unoccupied degenerate states while retaining symmetry. We show that the latter scenario often defining what Mott insulators are, is in fact not needed for the 3d binary oxides MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO. The mean-field band theory can indeed lift such degeneracies in the binaries when nontrivial unit cell representations (polymorphous networks) are allowed to break symmetries, in conjunction with a recently developed non-empirical exchange and correlation density-functional without an on-site interelectronic interaction U. We explain how density-functional theory (DFT) in the polymorphous representation achieves band gap opening in correlated materials through a separate mechanism to the Mott-Hubbard approach. We show the method predicts magnetic moments and gaps for the four binary monoxides in both the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases, offering an effective alternative to symmetry-conserving approaches for studying a range of functionalities in open d- and f-shell complex materials.

First-Principles Calculation of Spin and Orbital Contributions to Magnetically Ordered Moments in Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$

We show how an accurate first-principles treatment of the canted-antiferromagnetic ground state of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, a prototypical $5d$ correlated spin-orbit coupled material, can be obtained without invoking any free parameters such as the Hubbard U or tuning the spin-orbit coupling strength. Our theoretically predicted iridium magnetic moment of 0.250 $μ_B$, canted by 12.6$^{\circ}$ off the a-axis, is in accord with experimental results. By resolving the magnetic moments into their spin and orbital components, we show that our theoretically obtained variation of the magnetic scattering amplitude $ $ as a function of the polarization angle is consistent with recent non-resonant magnetic x-ray scattering measurements. The computed value of the band gap (55 meV) is also in line with the corresponding experimental values. A comparison of the band structure to that of the cuprates suggests the presence of incommensurate charge-density wave phases in Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$.

Examining the order-of-limits problem and lattice constant performance of the Tao--Mo Functional

In their recent communication [Phys. Rev. Lett., 117, 073001 (2016)] Tao and Mo presented a semi-local density functional derived from the density matrix expansion of the exchange hole localised by a general coordinate transformation. We show that the order-of-limits problem present in the functional, dismissed as harmless in the original publication, causes severe errors in predicted phase transition pressures. We also show that the claim that lattice volume prediction accuracy exceeds that of existing similar functionals was based on comparison to reference data that misses anharmonic zero-point expansion and consequently overestimates accuracy. By highlighting these omissions, we give a more accurate assessment of the Tao-Mo functional and show a simple route to resolving the problems.
