Integral Fluctuation Theorem for Microcanonical and Pure States

We present a derivation of the integral fluctuation theorem (IFT) for isolated quantum systems based on some natural assumptions on transition probabilities. Under these assumptions of "stiffness" and "smoothness" the IFT immediately follows for microcanonical and pure quantum states. We numerically check the IFT as well as the validity of our assumptions by analyzing two exemplary systems. We have been informed by T. Sagawa et al. that he and his co-workers found comparable numerical results and are preparing a corresponding paper, which should be available on the same day as the present text. We recommend reading their submission.

Chaotic diffusion of complex trajectory and its quantum signature

We investigate both the quantum and classical dynamics of a non-Hermitian system via a kicked rotor model with $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry. For the quantum dynamics, both the mean momentum and mean square of momentum exhibits the staircase growth with time when the system parameter is in the neighborhood of the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking point. If the system parameter is very larger than the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking point, the accelerator mode results in the directed spreading of the wavepackets as well as the ballistic diffusion in momentum space. For the classical dynamics, the non-Hermitian kicking potential leads to exponentially-fast increase of classical complex trajectories. As a consequence, the imaginary part of trajectories exponentially diffuses with time, while the real part exhibits the normal diffusion. Our analytical prediction of the exponential diffusion of imaginary momentum and its breakdown time is in good agreement with numerical results. The quantum signature of the chaotic diffusion of the complex trajectories is reflected by the dynamics of the out-of-time-order correlators (OTOC). In the semiclassical regime, the rate the exponential increase of the OTOC is equal with that of the exponential diffusion of complex trajectories.

Quantum Chaos and the Correspondence Principle

The correspondence principle is a cornerstone in the entire construction of quantum mechanics. This principle has been recently challenged by the observation of an early-time exponential increase of the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) in classically non-chaotic systems [E.B. Rozenbaum et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 014101 (2020)], Here we show that the correspondence principle is restored after a proper treatment of the singular points. Furthermore our results show that the OTOC maintains its role as a diagnostic of chaotic dynamics.

Complexity of quantum motion and quantum-classical correspondence: A phase-space approach

We discuss the connection between the out-of-time-ordered correlator and the number of harmonics of the phase-space Wigner distribution function. In particular, we show that both quantities grow exponentially for chaotic dynamics, with a rate determined by the largest Lyapunov exponent of the underlying classical dynamics, and algebraically -- linearly or quadratically -- for integrable dynamics. It is then possible to use such quantities to detect in the time domain the integrability to chaos crossover in many-body quantum systems.

Steady-state relations for a two-level system locally and relatively-strongly coupled to a generic many-body quantum chaotic environment

We study the long-time average of the reduced density matrix (RDM) of a two-level system as the central system, which is locally coupled to a generic many-body quantum chaotic system as the environment, under an overall Schrödinger evolution. The system-environment interaction has a generic form with dissipation. It is shown that, in addition to the exact relations due to unit trace and hermiticity, an approximate relation exists among elements of the averaged RDM computed in the eigenbasis of the central system's Hamiltonian in some interaction regimes. In particular, an explicit expression of the relation is derived for relatively strong interactions, whose strength is above the mean level spacing of the environment, meanwhile, remains small compared with the central system's level spacing. Numerical simulations performed in a model with the environment as a defect Ising chain confirm the analytical predictions.

Similar early growth of out-of-time-ordered correlators in quantum chaotic and integrable Ising chains

Previous studies show that, in quantum chaotic and integrable systems, the so-called out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) generically behaves differently at long times, while, it may show similar early growth in one-body systems. In this paper, by means of numerical simulations, it is shown that OTOC has similar early growth in two quantum many-body systems, one integrable and one chaotic.

Directed momentum current induced by the PT-symmetric driving

We investigate the directed momentum current in the quantum kicked rotor model with $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric deriving potential. For the quantum non-resonance case, the values of quasi-energy become to be complex when the strength of imaginary part of the kicking potential exceeds \textbf{a} threshold value, which demonstrates the appearance of the spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking. In the vicinity of the phase-transition point, the momentum current exhibits a staircase growth with time. Each platform of the momentum current corresponds to the mean momentum of some eigenstates of the Floquet operator whose imaginary parts of the quasi-energy are significantly large. Above the phase-transition point, the momentum current increases linearly with time. Interestingly, its acceleration rate exhibits a kind of "quantized" increment with the kicking strength. We propose a modified classical acceleration mode of the kicked rotor model to explain such an intriguing phenomenon. Our theoretical prediction is in good agreement with numerical results.

Thermalization of small quantum systems: From the zeroth law of thermodynamics

Thermalization of isolated quantum systems has been studied intensively in recent years and significant progresses have been achieved. Here, we study thermalization of small quantum systems that interact with large chaotic environments under the consideration of Schrödinger evolution of composite systems, from the perspective of the zeroth law of thermodynamics. Namely, we consider a small quantum system that is brought into contact with a large environmental system; after they have relaxed, they are separated and their temperatures are studied. Our question is under what conditions the small system may have a detectable temperature that is identical with the environmental temperature. This should be a necessary condition for the small quantum system to be thermalized and to have a well-defined temperature. By using a two-level probe quantum system that plays the role of a thermometer, we find that the zeroth law is applicable to quantum chaotic systems, but not to integrable systems.

Convergent perturbation expansion of energy eigenfunctions on unperturbed basis states in classically-forbidden regions

We study properties of eigenfunctions of perturbed systems, given on the eigenbases of unperturbed, integrable systems. For a given pair of perturbed and unperturbed systems, with respect to the energy of each perturbed state, the unperturbed basis states can be divided into two groups: one in the classically-allowed region and the other in the classically-forbidden region; correspondingly, the eigenfunction of the perturbed state is also divided into two parts. In the semiclassical limit, it is shown that, making use of components of the eigenfunction in its classically-allowed region, its components in the classically-forbidden region can be written in the form of a convergent perturbation expansion, which is valid for all perturbation strengths.

Internal temperature of quantum chaotic systems at the nanoscale and its detection by a microscopic thermometer

The extent to which a temperature can be appropriately assigned to a small quantum system, as an internal property but not as a property of any large environment, is still an open problem. In this paper, a method is proposed for solving this problem, by which a studied system is coupled to a two-level system (probe) as a microscopic thermometer. For small quantum chaotic systems, we show that a temperature can be determined, the value of which is sensitive to neither the form, location, and strength of the probe-system coupling, nor the Hamiltonian and initial state of the probe. This temperature turns out to have the form of Boltzmann temperature.

Correlations in eigenfunctions of quantum chaotic systems with sparse Hamiltonian matrices

In most realistic models for quantum chaotic systems, the Hamiltonian matrices in unperturbed bases have a sparse structure. We study correlations in eigenfunctions of such systems and derive explicit expressions for some of the correlation functions with respect to energy. The analytical results are tested in several models by numerical simulations. An application is given for a relation between transition probabilities.

Statistical distribution of components of energy eigenfunctions: from nearly-integrable to chaotic

We study the statistical distribution of components in the non-perturbative parts of energy eigenfunctions (EFs), in which main bodies of the EFs lie. Our numerical simulations in five models show that deviation of the distribution from the prediction of random matrix theory (RMT) is useful in characterizing the process from nearly-integrable to chaotic, in a way somewhat similar to the nearest-level-spacing distribution. But, the statistics of EFs reveals some more properties, as described below. (i) In the process of approaching quantum chaos, the distribution of components shows a delay feature compared with the nearest-level-spacing distribution in most of the models studied. (ii) In the quantum chaotic regime, the distribution of components always shows small but notable deviation from the prediction of RMT in models possessing classical unterparts, while, the deviation can be almost negligible in models not possessing classical counterparts. (iii) In models whose Hamiltonian matrices possess a clear band structure, tails of EFs show statistical behaviors obviously different from those in the main bodies, while, the difference is smaller for Hamiltonian matrices without a clear band structure.

Half-width of local spectral density of states given by width of nonperturbative parts of eigenfunctions: The Wigner-band-matrix model

It is shown that, for a Hamiltonian with a band structure, the half width of local spectral density of states, or strength function, is closely related to the width of the nonperturbative (NPT) parts of energy eigenfunctions. In the Wigner-band random-matrix model, making use of a generalized Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory, we derive analytical expressions for the width of the NPT parts under weak and strong perturbation. An iterative algorithm is given, by which the NPT widths can be computed efficiently, and is used in numerical test of the analytical predictions.
