WanJuan: A Comprehensive Multimodal Dataset for Advancing English and Chinese Large Models

The rise in popularity of ChatGPT and GPT-4 has significantly accelerated the development of large models, leading to the creation of numerous impressive large language models(LLMs) and multimodal large language models (MLLMs). These cutting-edge models owe their remarkable performance to high-quality data. However, the details of the training data used in leading paradigms are often kept confidential. This lack of transparency, coupled with the scarcity of open-source data, impedes further developments within the community. As a response, this paper presents "Wan Juan", a large-scale multimodal dataset composed of both Chinese and English data, collected from a wide range of web sources. The dataset incorporates text, image-text, and video modalities, with a total volume exceeding 2TB. It was utilized in the training of InternLM, a model that demonstrated significant advantages in multi-dimensional evaluations when compared to models of a similar scale. All data can be accessed at https://opendatalab.org.cn/WanJuan1.0.

MLLM-DataEngine: An Iterative Refinement Approach for MLLM

Despite the great advance of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) in both instruction dataset building and benchmarking, the independence of training and evaluation makes current MLLMs hard to further improve their capability under the guidance of evaluation results with a relatively low human cost. In this paper, we propose MLLM-DataEngine, a novel closed-loop system that bridges data generation, model training, and evaluation. Within each loop iteration, the MLLM-DataEngine first analyze the weakness of the model based on the evaluation results, then generate a proper incremental dataset for the next training iteration and enhance the model capability iteratively. Compared with previous data collection methods which are separate from the benchmarking, the data generated by MLLM-DataEngine shows better targeting, quality, and correctness. For targeting, we propose an Adaptive Bad-case Sampling module, which adjusts the ratio of different types of data within each incremental dataset based on the benchmarking results. For quality, we resort to GPT-4 to generate high-quality data with each given data type. For correctness, prompt design is critical for the data generation results. Rather than previous hand-crafted prompt, we propose an Interactive Prompt Optimization strategy, which optimizes the prompt with the multi-round interaction between human and GPT, and improve the correctness of generated data greatly. Through extensive experiments, we find our MLLM-DataEngine could boost the MLLM capability in a targeted and automatic manner, with only a few human participation. We hope it could be a general solution for the following MLLMs building. The MLLM-DataEngine has been open-sourced and is now available at https://github.com/opendatalab/MLLM-DataEngine.

FOLT: Fast Multiple Object Tracking from UAV-captured Videos Based on Optical Flow

Multiple object tracking (MOT) has been successfully investigated in computer vision. However, MOT for the videos captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) is still challenging due to small object size, blurred object appearance, and very large and/or irregular motion in both ground objects and UAV platforms. In this paper, we propose FOLT to mitigate these problems and reach fast and accurate MOT in UAV view. Aiming at speed-accuracy trade-off, FOLT adopts a modern detector and light-weight optical flow extractor to extract object detection features and motion features at a minimum cost. Given the extracted flow, the flow-guided feature augmentation is designed to augment the object detection feature based on its optical flow, which improves the detection of small objects. Then the flow-guided motion prediction is also proposed to predict the object's position in the next frame, which improves the tracking performance of objects with very large displacements between adjacent frames. Finally, the tracker matches the detected objects and predicted objects using a spatially matching scheme to generate tracks for every object. Experiments on Visdrone and UAVDT datasets show that our proposed model can successfully track small objects with large and irregular motion and outperform existing state-of-the-art methods in UAV-MOT tasks.

Voxurf: Voxel-based Efficient and Accurate Neural Surface Reconstruction

Neural surface reconstruction aims to reconstruct accurate 3D surfaces based on multi-view images. Previous methods based on neural volume rendering mostly train a fully implicit model with MLPs, which typically require hours of training for a single scene. Recent efforts explore the explicit volumetric representation to accelerate the optimization via memorizing significant information with learnable voxel grids. However, existing voxel-based methods often struggle in reconstructing fine-grained geometry, even when combined with an SDF-based volume rendering scheme. We reveal that this is because 1) the voxel grids tend to break the color-geometry dependency that facilitates fine-geometry learning, and 2) the under-constrained voxel grids lack spatial coherence and are vulnerable to local minima. In this work, we present Voxurf, a voxel-based surface reconstruction approach that is both efficient and accurate. Voxurf addresses the aforementioned issues via several key designs, including 1) a two-stage training procedure that attains a coherent coarse shape and recovers fine details successively, 2) a dual color network that maintains color-geometry dependency, and 3) a hierarchical geometry feature to encourage information propagation across voxels. Extensive experiments show that Voxurf achieves high efficiency and high quality at the same time. On the DTU benchmark, Voxurf achieves higher reconstruction quality with a 20x training speedup compared to previous fully implicit methods. Our code is available at https://github.com/wutong16/Voxurf.

Zero-shot Skeleton-based Action Recognition via Mutual Information Estimation and Maximization

Zero-shot skeleton-based action recognition aims to recognize actions of unseen categories after training on data of seen categories. The key is to build the connection between visual and semantic space from seen to unseen classes. Previous studies have primarily focused on encoding sequences into a singular feature vector, with subsequent mapping the features to an identical anchor point within the embedded space. Their performance is hindered by 1) the ignorance of the global visual/semantic distribution alignment, which results in a limitation to capture the true interdependence between the two spaces. 2) the negligence of temporal information since the frame-wise features with rich action clues are directly pooled into a single feature vector. We propose a new zero-shot skeleton-based action recognition method via mutual information (MI) estimation and maximization. Specifically, 1) we maximize the MI between visual and semantic space for distribution alignment; 2) we leverage the temporal information for estimating the MI by encouraging MI to increase as more frames are observed. Extensive experiments on three large-scale skeleton action datasets confirm the effectiveness of our method. Code: https://github.com/YujieOuO/SMIE.

Efficient Prediction of Peptide Self-assembly through Sequential and Graphical Encoding

In recent years, there has been an explosion of research on the application of deep learning to the prediction of various peptide properties, due to the significant development and market potential of peptides. Molecular dynamics has enabled the efficient collection of large peptide datasets, providing reliable training data for deep learning. However, the lack of systematic analysis of the peptide encoding, which is essential for AI-assisted peptide-related tasks, makes it an urgent problem to be solved for the improvement of prediction accuracy. To address this issue, we first collect a high-quality, colossal simulation dataset of peptide self-assembly containing over 62,000 samples generated by coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD). Then, we systematically investigate the effect of peptide encoding of amino acids into sequences and molecular graphs using state-of-the-art sequential (i.e., RNN, LSTM, and Transformer) and structural deep learning models (i.e., GCN, GAT, and GraphSAGE), on the accuracy of peptide self-assembly prediction, an essential physiochemical process prior to any peptide-related applications. Extensive benchmarking studies have proven Transformer to be the most powerful sequence-encoding-based deep learning model, pushing the limit of peptide self-assembly prediction to decapeptides. In summary, this work provides a comprehensive benchmark analysis of peptide encoding with advanced deep learning models, serving as a guide for a wide range of peptide-related predictions such as isoelectric points, hydration free energy, etc.

Dense Distinct Query for End-to-End Object Detection

One-to-one label assignment in object detection has successfully obviated the need for non-maximum suppression (NMS) as postprocessing and makes the pipeline end-to-end. However, it triggers a new dilemma as the widely used sparse queries cannot guarantee a high recall, while dense queries inevitably bring more similar queries and encounter optimization difficulties. As both sparse and dense queries are problematic, then what are the expected queries in end-to-end object detection? This paper shows that the solution should be Dense Distinct Queries (DDQ). Concretely, we first lay dense queries like traditional detectors and then select distinct ones for one-to-one assignments. DDQ blends the advantages of traditional and recent end-to-end detectors and significantly improves the performance of various detectors including FCN, R-CNN, and DETRs. Most impressively, DDQ-DETR achieves 52.1 AP on MS-COCO dataset within 12 epochs using a ResNet-50 backbone, outperforming all existing detectors in the same setting. DDQ also shares the benefit of end-to-end detectors in crowded scenes and achieves 93.8 AP on CrowdHuman. We hope DDQ can inspire researchers to consider the complementarity between traditional methods and end-to-end detectors. The source code can be found at \url{https://github.com/jshilong/DDQ}.

Real-time Workload Pattern Analysis for Large-scale Cloud Databases

Hosting database services on cloud systems has become a common practice. This has led to the increasing volume of database workloads, which provides the opportunity for pattern analysis. Discovering workload patterns from a business logic perspective is conducive to better understanding the trends and characteristics of the database system. However, existing workload pattern discovery systems are not suitable for large-scale cloud databases which are commonly employed by the industry. This is because the workload patterns of large-scale cloud databases are generally far more complicated than those of ordinary databases. In this paper, we propose Alibaba Workload Miner (AWM), a real-time system for discovering workload patterns in complicated large-scale workloads. AWM encodes and discovers the SQL query patterns logged from user requests and optimizes the querying processing based on the discovered patterns. First, Data Collection & Preprocessing Module collects streaming query logs and encodes them into high-dimensional feature embeddings with rich semantic contexts and execution features. Next, Online Workload Mining Module separates encoded queries by business groups and discovers the workload patterns for each group. Meanwhile, Offline Training Module collects labels and trains the classification model using the labels. Finally, Pattern-based Optimizing Module optimizes query processing in cloud databases by exploiting discovered patterns. Extensive experimental results on one synthetic dataset and two real-life datasets (extracted from Alibaba Cloud databases) show that AWM enhances the accuracy of pattern discovery by 66% and reduce the latency of online inference by 22%, compared with the state-of-the-arts.

Terahertz spin currents in nanoscale spatial resolution

The ability to generate, detect, and control coherent terahertz (THz) spin currents with femtosecond temporal and nanoscale spatial resolution has significant ramifications. The diffraction limit of concentrated THz radiation, which has a wavelength range of 5 μm-1.5 mm, has impeded the accumulation of nanodomain data of magnetic structures and spintronic dynamics despite its potential benefits. Contemporary spintronic optoelectronic apparatuses with dimensions 100 nm presented a challenge for researchers due to this restriction. In this study, we demonstrate the use of spintronic THz emission nanoscopy (STEN), which allows for the efficient injection and precise coherent detection of ultrafast THz spin currents at the nanoscale. Furthermore, STEN is an effective method that does not require invasion for characterising and etching nanoscale spintronic heterostructures. The cohesive integration of nanophotonics, nanospintronics, and THz-nano technology into a single platform is poised to accelerate the development of high-frequency spintronic optoelectronic nanodevices and their revolutionary technical applications.

UPop: Unified and Progressive Pruning for Compressing Vision-Language Transformers

Real-world data contains a vast amount of multimodal information, among which vision and language are the two most representative modalities. Moreover, increasingly heavier models, \textit{e}.\textit{g}., Transformers, have attracted the attention of researchers to model compression. However, how to compress multimodal models, especially vison-language Transformers, is still under-explored. This paper proposes the \textbf{U}nified and \textbf{P}r\textbf{o}gressive \textbf{P}runing (\textbf{\emph{UPop}}) as a universal vison-language Transformer compression framework, which incorporates 1) unifiedly searching multimodal subnets in a continuous optimization space from the original model, which enables automatic assignment of pruning ratios among compressible modalities and structures; 2) progressively searching and retraining the subnet, which maintains convergence between the search and retrain to attain higher compression ratios. Experiments on various tasks, datasets, and model architectures demonstrate the effectiveness and versatility of the proposed UPop framework. The code is available at https://github.com/sdc17/UPop.

OCBEV: Object-Centric BEV Transformer for Multi-View 3D Object Detection

Multi-view 3D object detection is becoming popular in autonomous driving due to its high effectiveness and low cost. Most of the current state-of-the-art detectors follow the query-based bird's-eye-view (BEV) paradigm, which benefits from both BEV's strong perception power and end-to-end pipeline. Despite achieving substantial progress, existing works model objects via globally leveraging temporal and spatial information of BEV features, resulting in problems when handling the challenging complex and dynamic autonomous driving scenarios. In this paper, we proposed an Object-Centric query-BEV detector OCBEV, which can carve the temporal and spatial cues of moving targets more effectively. OCBEV comprises three designs: Object Aligned Temporal Fusion aligns the BEV feature based on ego-motion and estimated current locations of moving objects, leading to a precise instance-level feature fusion. Object Focused Multi-View Sampling samples more 3D features from an adaptive local height ranges of objects for each scene to enrich foreground information. Object Informed Query Enhancement replaces part of pre-defined decoder queries in common DETR-style decoders with positional features of objects on high-confidence locations, introducing more direct object positional priors. Extensive experimental evaluations are conducted on the challenging nuScenes dataset. Our approach achieves a state-of-the-art result, surpassing the traditional BEVFormer by 1.5 NDS points. Moreover, we have a faster convergence speed and only need half of the training iterations to get comparable performance, which further demonstrates its effectiveness.

Satellite Content and Halo Mass of Galaxy Clusters: Comparison between Red-Sequence and Halo-based Optical Cluster Finders

Cluster cosmology depends critically on how optical clusters are selected from imaging surveys. We compare the conditional luminosity function (CLF) and weak lensing halo masses between two different cluster samples at fixed richness, detected within the same volume ($0.1{<}z{<}0.34$) using the red-sequence and halo-based methods. After calibrating our CLF deprojection method against mock galaxy samples, we measure the 3D CLFs by cross-correlating clusters with SDSS photometric galaxies. As expected, the CLFs of red-sequence and halo-based finders exhibit redder and bluer populations, respectively. The red-sequence clusters have a flat distribution of red galaxies at the faint end, while the halo-based clusters host a decreasing faint red and a boosted blue population at the bright end. By comparing subsamples of clusters that have a match between the two catalogues to those without matches, we discover that the CLF shape is mainly caused by the different cluster centroiding. However, the average weak lensing halo mass between the matched and non-matched clusters are consistent with each other in either cluster sample for halos with $λ>30$ (M$_{h}^{WL}{>}1.5\times10^{14}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$). Since the colour preferences of the two cluster finders are almost orthogonal, such a consistency indicates that the scatter in the mass-richness relation of either cluster sample is close to random. Therefore, while the choice of how optical clusters are identified impacts the satellite content, our result suggests that it should not introduce strong systematic biases in cluster cosmology, except for the $λ<30$ regime.

Stochastic maximum principle for recursive optimal control problems with varying terminal time

This paper introduces a new recursive stochastic optimal control problem driven by a forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs), where the ter?minal time varies according to the constraints of the state of the forward equation. This new optimal control problem can be used to describe the investment portfolio problems with the varying investment period. Based on novel \r{ho}-moving variational and adjoint equations, we establish the stochastic maximum principle for this optimal control problem including the classical optimal control problem as a particular case. Furthermore, we propose an example to verify our main results.

OmniObject3D: Large-Vocabulary 3D Object Dataset for Realistic Perception, Reconstruction and Generation

Recent advances in modeling 3D objects mostly rely on synthetic datasets due to the lack of large-scale realscanned 3D databases. To facilitate the development of 3D perception, reconstruction, and generation in the real world, we propose OmniObject3D, a large vocabulary 3D object dataset with massive high-quality real-scanned 3D objects. OmniObject3D has several appealing properties: 1) Large Vocabulary: It comprises 6,000 scanned objects in 190 daily categories, sharing common classes with popular 2D datasets (e.g., ImageNet and LVIS), benefiting the pursuit of generalizable 3D representations. 2) Rich Annotations: Each 3D object is captured with both 2D and 3D sensors, providing textured meshes, point clouds, multiview rendered images, and multiple real-captured videos. 3) Realistic Scans: The professional scanners support highquality object scans with precise shapes and realistic appearances. With the vast exploration space offered by OmniObject3D, we carefully set up four evaluation tracks: a) robust 3D perception, b) novel-view synthesis, c) neural surface reconstruction, and d) 3D object generation. Extensive studies are performed on these four benchmarks, revealing new observations, challenges, and opportunities for future research in realistic 3D vision.

Semantics-Aware Dynamic Localization and Refinement for Referring Image Segmentation

Referring image segmentation segments an image from a language expression. With the aim of producing high-quality masks, existing methods often adopt iterative learning approaches that rely on RNNs or stacked attention layers to refine vision-language features. Despite their complexity, RNN-based methods are subject to specific encoder choices, while attention-based methods offer limited gains. In this work, we introduce a simple yet effective alternative for progressively learning discriminative multi-modal features. The core idea of our approach is to leverage a continuously updated query as the representation of the target object and at each iteration, strengthen multi-modal features strongly correlated to the query while weakening less related ones. As the query is initialized by language features and successively updated by object features, our algorithm gradually shifts from being localization-centric to segmentation-centric. This strategy enables the incremental recovery of missing object parts and/or removal of extraneous parts through iteration. Compared to its counterparts, our method is more versatile$\unicode{x2014}$it can be plugged into prior arts straightforwardly and consistently bring improvements. Experimental results on the challenging datasets of RefCOCO, RefCOCO+, and G-Ref demonstrate its advantage with respect to the state-of-the-art methods.

Achieving ferroelectricity in a centrosymmetric high-performance semiconductor by strain engineering

Phase engineering by strains in 2D semiconductors is of great importance for a variety of applications. Here, we present a study of strain induced ferroelectric (FE) transition on bismuth oxyselenide (Bi$_2$O$_2$Se) films, a high-performance (HP) semiconductor for next-generation electronics. Bi$_2$O$_2$Se is non-FE at ambient. Upon a loading force $\gtrsim 400$ nN, piezoelectric force responses exhibit butterfly loops on magnitude and 180$^\textrm{o}$ phase switching. By carefully ruling out extrinsic factors, these features are attributed to a transition to FE phase. The transition is further proved by the appearance of a sharp peak on optical second harmonic generation under an uniaxial strain. Fundamentally, solids with paraelectric at ambient and FE under strains are scarce. FE transition is discussed with the help of first-principle calculations and theoretical simulations. The switching of FE polarization acts as a knob for Schottky barrier engineering at contacts and serves as basis for a memristor with a huge switching ratio of 10$^6$. Our work endows a new degree of freedom to a HP electronic/optoelectronic semiconductor and the integration of FE and HP semiconductivity paving the way for multiple exciting functionalities, including HP neuromorphic computation and bulk piezophotovoltaic.

Knowledge-Enhanced Semi-Supervised Federated Learning for Aggregating Heterogeneous Lightweight Clients in IoT

Federated learning (FL) enables multiple clients to train models collaboratively without sharing local data, which has achieved promising results in different areas, including the Internet of Things (IoT). However, end IoT devices do not have abilities to automatically annotate their collected data, which leads to the label shortage issue at the client side. To collaboratively train an FL model, we can only use a small number of labeled data stored on the server. This is a new yet practical scenario in federated learning, i.e., labels-at-server semi-supervised federated learning (SemiFL). Although several SemiFL approaches have been proposed recently, none of them can focus on the personalization issue in their model design. IoT environments make SemiFL more challenging, as we need to take device computational constraints and communication cost into consideration simultaneously. To tackle these new challenges together, we propose a novel SemiFL framework named pFedKnow. pFedKnow generates lightweight personalized client models via neural network pruning techniques to reduce communication cost. Moreover, it incorporates pretrained large models as prior knowledge to guide the aggregation of personalized client models and further enhance the framework performance. Experiment results on both image and text datasets show that the proposed pFedKnow outperforms state-of-the-art baselines as well as reducing considerable communication cost. The source code of the proposed pFedKnow is available at https://github.com/JackqqWang/pfedknow/tree/master.
