Supervised Learning in Automatic Channel Selection for Epileptic Seizure Detection

Detecting seizure using brain neuroactivations recorded by intracranial electroencephalogram (iEEG) has been widely used for monitoring, diagnosing, and closed-loop therapy of epileptic patients, however, computational efficiency gains are needed if state-of-the-art methods are to be implemented in implanted devices. We present a novel method for automatic seizure detection based on iEEG data that outperforms current state-of-the-art seizure detection methods in terms of computational efficiency while maintaining the accuracy. The proposed algorithm incorporates an automatic channel selection (ACS) engine as a pre-processing stage to the seizure detection procedure. The ACS engine consists of supervised classifiers which aim to find iEEGchannelswhich contribute the most to a seizure. Seizure detection stage involves feature extraction and classification. Feature extraction is performed in both frequency and time domains where spectral power and correlation between channel pairs are calculated. Random Forest is used in classification of interictal, ictal and early ictal periods of iEEG signals. Seizure detection in this paper is retrospective and patient-specific. iEEG data is accessed via Kaggle, provided by International Epilepsy Electro-physiology Portal. The dataset includes a training set of 6.5 hours of interictal data and 41 minin ictal data and a test set of 9.14 hours. Compared to the state-of-the-art on the same dataset, we achieve 49.4% increase in computational efficiency and 400 mins better in average for detection delay. The proposed model is able to detect a seizure onset at 91.95% sensitivity and 94.05% specificity with a mean detection delay of 2.77 s. The area under the curve (AUC) is 96.44%, that is comparable to the current state-of-the-art with AUC of 96.29%.

Nano-Intrinsic True Random Number Generation

Recent advances in predictive data analytics and ever growing digitalization and connectivity with explosive expansions in industrial and consumer Internet-of-Things (IoT) has raised significant concerns about security of people's identities and data. It has created close to ideal environment for adversaries in terms of the amount of data that could be used for modeling and also greater accessibility for side-channel analysis of security primitives and random number generators. Random number generators (RNGs) are at the core of most security applications. Therefore, a secure and trustworthy source of randomness is required to be found. Here, we present a differential circuit for harvesting one of the most stochastic phenomenon in solid-state physics, random telegraphic noise (RTN), that is designed to demonstrate significantly lower sensitivities to other sources of noises, radiation and temperature fluctuations. We use RTN in amorphous SrTiO3-based resistive memories to evaluate the proposed true random number generator (TRNG). Successful evaluation on conventional true randomness tests (NIST tests) has been shown. Robustness against using predictive machine learning and side-channel attacks have also been demonstrated in comparison with non-differential readouts methods.

A Physical Unclonable Function with Redox-based Nanoionic Resistive Memory

A unique set of characteristics are packed in emerging nonvolatile reduction-oxidation (redox)-based resistive switching memories (ReRAMs) such as their underlying stochastic switching processes alongside their intrinsic highly nonlinear current-voltage characteristic, which in addition to known nano-fabrication process variation make them a promising candidate for the next generation of low-cost, low-power, tiny and secure Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs). This paper takes advantage of this otherwise disadvantageous ReRAM feature using a combination of novel architectural and peripheral circuitry. We present a physical one-way function, nonlinear resistive Physical Unclonable Function (nrPUF), potentially applicable in variety of cyber-physical security applications given its performance characteristics. We experimentally verified performance of Valency Change Mechanism (VCM)-based ReRAM in nano-fabricated crossbar arrays across multiple dies and runs. In addition to a massive pool of Challenge-Response Pairs (CRPs), using a combination of experimental and simulation, our proposed PUF shows a reliability of 98.67%, a uniqueness of 49.85%, a diffuseness of 49.86%, a uniformity of 47.28%, and a bit-aliasing of 47.48%.

Weak Localization and Electron-electron Interactions in Few Layer Black Phosphorus Devices

Few layer phosphorene(FLP) devices are extensively studied due to its unique electronic properties and potential applications on nano-electronics . Here we present magnetotransport studies which reveal electron-electron interactions as the dominant scattering mechanism in hexagonal boron nitride-encapsulated FLP devices. From weak localization measurements, we estimate the electron dephasing length to be 30 to 100 nm at low temperatures, which exhibits a strong dependence on carrier density n and a power-law dependence on temperature (~T-0.4). These results establish that the dominant scattering mechanism in FLP is electron-electron interactions.

Ground-based verification and data processing of Yutu rover Active Particle-induced X-ray Spectrometer

The Active Particle-induced X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) is one of the payloads on board the Yutu rover of Chang'E-3 mission. In order to assess the instrumental performance of APXS, a ground verification test was done for two unknown samples (basaltic rock, mixed powder sample). In this paper, the details of the experiment configurations and data analysis method are presented. The results show that the elemental abundance of major elements can be well determined by the APXS with relative deviations < 15 wt. % (detection distance = 30 mm, acquisition time = 30 min). The derived detection limit of each major element is inversely proportional to acquisition time and directly proportional to detection distance, suggesting that the appropriate distance should be < 50mm.

Gate Tunable Quantum Oscillations in Air-Stable and High Mobility Few-Layer Phosphorene Heterostructures

As the only non-carbon elemental layered allotrope, few-layer black phosphorus or phosphorene has emerged as a novel two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor with both high bulk mobility and a band gap. Here we report fabrication and transport measurements of phosphorene-hexagonal BN (hBN) heterostructures with one-dimensional (1D) edge contacts. These transistors are stable in ambient conditions for >300 hours, and display ambipolar behavior, a gate-dependent metal-insulator transition, and mobility up to 4000 $cm^2$/Vs. At low temperatures, we observe gate-tunable Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) magneto-oscillations and Zeeman splitting in magnetic field with an estimated g-factor ~2. The cyclotron mass of few-layer phosphorene holes is determined to increase from 0.25 to 0.31 $m_e$ as the Fermi level moves towards the valence band edge. Our results underscore the potential of few-layer phosphorene (FLP) as both a platform for novel 2D physics and an electronic material for semiconductor applications.

Physical Design and Monte Carlo Simulations of a Space Radiation Detector onboard the SJ-10 satellite

A radiation gene box (RGB) onboard the SJ-10 satellite is a device carrying mice and drosophila cells to determine the biological effects of space radiation environment. The shielded fluxes of different radioactive sources were calculated and the linear energy transfers of gamma-rays, electrons, protons and alpha-particles in tissue were acquired using A-150 tissue-equivalent plastic. Then, a conceptual model of a space radiation instrument employing three semiconductor sub-detectors for deriving the charged and uncharged radiation environment of the RGB was designed. The energy depositions in the three sub-detectors were classified into fifteen channels (bins) in an algorithm derived from the Monte Carlo method. The physical feasibility of the conceptual instrument was also verified by Monte Carlo simulations.
