Reduced steroid activation of elephant shark glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptors after inserting four amino acids from the DNA-binding domain of lamprey corticoid receptor-1

Atlantic sea lamprey contains two corticoid receptors (CRs), CR1 and CR2, that are identical except for a four amino acid insert (Thr-Arg-Gln-Gly) in the CR1 DNA-binding domain (DBD). Steroids are stronger transcriptional activators of CR2 than of CR1 suggesting that the insert reduces the transcriptional response of lamprey CR1 to steroids. The DBD in elephant shark mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) and glucocorticoid receptor (GR), which are descended from a CR, lack these four amino acids, suggesting that a CR2 is their common ancestor. To determine if, similar to lamprey CR1, the presence of this insert in elephant shark MR and GR decreases transcriptional activation by corticosteroids, we inserted these four CR1-specific residues into the DBD of elephant shark MR and GR. Compared to steroid activation of wild-type elephant shark MR and GR, cortisol, corticosterone, aldosterone, 11-deoxycorticosterone and 11-deoxycortisol had lower transcriptional activation of these mutant MR and GR receptors, indicating that the absence of this four-residue segment in the DBD in wild-type elephant shark MR and GR increases transcriptional activation by corticosteroids.

Global Existence of Strong Solutions and Serrin-Type Blowup Criterion for 3D Combustion Model in Bounded Domains

The combustion model is studied in three-dimensional (3D) smooth bounded domains with various types of boundary conditions. The global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions are obtained under the smallness of the gradient of initial velocity in some precise sense. Using the energy method with the estimates of boundary integrals, we obtain the a priori bounds of the density and velocity field. Finally, we establish the blowup criterion for the 3D combustion system.

Ghostly ideals in uniform Roe algebras

In this paper, we investigate the ideal structure of uniform Roe algebras for general metric spaces beyond the scope of Yu's property A. Inspired by the ideal of ghost operators coming from expander graphs and in contrast to the notion of geometric ideal, we introduce a notion of ghostly ideal in a uniform Roe algebra, whose elements are locally invisible in certain directions at infinity. We show that the geometric ideal and the ghostly ideal are respectively the smallest and the largest element in the lattice of ideals with a common invariant open subset of the unit space of the coarse groupoid by Skandalis-Tu-Yu, and hence the study of ideal structure can be reduced to classifying ideals between the geometric and the ghostly ones. As an application, we provide a concrete description for the maximal ideals in a uniform Roe algebra in terms of the minimal points in the Stone-Čech boundary of the space. We also provide a criterion to ensure that the geometric and the ghostly ideals have the same $K$-theory, which helps to recover counterexamples to the Baum-Connes type conjectures. Moreover, we introduce a notion of partial Property A for a metric space to characterise the situation in which the geometric ideal coincides with the ghostly ideal.

Well-Posedness for 2D Combustion Model in Bounded Domains and Serrin-Type Blowup Criterion

We investigate the 2D combustion model with Dirichlet boundary conditions and slip boundary conditions in bounded domains. The global existence of weak and strong solutions and the uniqueness of strong solutions are obtained provided the initial density is small in some precise sense. Using the energy method and the estimates of boundary integrals, we obtain the a priori bounds if the density and velocity field. In addition, we prove the local existence of the strong solutions via iterative method and the contraction mapping theorem. Finally, we extend the well known Serrion's blowup criterion to the 2D combustion model. Under the suitable boundary conditions, the Serrin's condition on the velocity can be removed in this criteria.

A Markovian and Roe-algebraic approach to asymptotic expansion in measure

In this paper, we conduct further studies on geometric and analytic properties of asymptotic expansion in measure. More precisely, we develop a machinery of Markov expansion and obtain an associated structure theorem for asymptotically expanding actions. Based on this, we establish an analytic characterisation for asymptotic expansion in terms of the Druţu-Nowak projection and the Roe algebra of the associated warped cones. As an application, we provide new counterexamples to the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture.

Measured asymptotic expanders and rigidity for Roe algebras

Our main result about rigidity of Roe algebras is the following: if $X$ and $Y$ are metric spaces with bounded geometry such that their Roe algebras are $*$-isomorphic, then $X$ and $Y$ are coarsely equivalent provided that either $X$ or $Y$ contains no sparse subspaces consisting of ghostly measured asymptotic expanders. Note that this geometric condition generalises the existing technical assumptions used for rigidity of Roe algebras. Consequently, we show that the rigidity holds for all bounded geometry spaces which coarsely embed into some $L^p$-space for $p\in [1,\infty)$. Moreover, we also verify the rigidity for the box spaces constructed by Arzhantseva-Tessera and Delabie-Khukhro even though they do \emph{not} coarsely embed into any $L^p$-space. The key step towards our proof for the rigidity is to show that a block-rank-one (ghost) projection on a sparse space $X$ belongs to the Roe algebra $C^*(X)$ if and only if $X$ consists of (ghostly) measured asymptotic expanders. As a by-product, we also deduce that ghostly measured asymptotic expanders are new sources of counterexamples to the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture.

Characterisations for uniform amenability

In this paper, we provide several characterisations for uniform amenability concerning a family of finitely generated groups. More precisely, we show that the Hulanicki-Reiter condition for uniform amenability can be weakened in several directions, including cardinalities of supports and certain operator norms.

Nodeless superconductivity in the topological nodal-line semimetal CaSb2

CaSb2 is a topological nodal-line semimetal that becomes superconducting below 1.6 K, providing an ideal platform to investigate the interplay between topologically nontrivial electronic bands and superconductivity. In this work, we investigated the superconducting order parameter of CaSb2 by measuring its magnetic penetration depth change Δλ(T) down to 0.07 K, using a tunneling diode oscillator (TDO) based technique. Well inside the superconducting state, Δλ(T) shows an exponential activated behavior, and provides direct evidence for a nodeless superconducting gap. By analyzing the temperature dependence of the superfluid density and the electronic specific heat, we find both can be consistently described by a two-gap s-wave model, in line with the presence of multiple Fermi surfaces associated with distinct Sb sites in this compound. These results demonstrate fully-gapped superconductivity in CaSb2 and constrain the allowed pairing symmetry.

Design of the PMT underwater cascade implosion protection system for JUNO

Photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) are widely used underwater in large-scale neutrino experiments. As a hollow glass spherelike structure, implosion is unavoidable during long-term operation under large water pressure. There is a possibility of cascade implosion to neighbor PMTs due to shockwave. Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory designed a protection structure for each 20-inch PMT, consisting of a top cover, a bottom cover, and their connection. This paper introduces the requirement and design of the PMT protection system, including the material selection, investigation of manufacture technology, and prototyping. Optimization and validation by simulation and underwater experiments are also presented.

The equivariant coarse Baum-Connes conjecture for actions by a-T-menable groups

The equivariant coarse Baum-Connes conjecture was firstly introduced by Roe [29] as a unified way to approach both the Baum-Connes conjecture and its coarse counterpart. In this paper, we prove that if an a-T-menable group $Γ$ acts properly and isometrically on a bounded geometry metric space $X$ with controlled distortion such that the quotient space $X/Γ$ is coarsely embeddable, then the equivariant coarse Baum-Connes conjecture holds for this action. This answers a question posed in [8] affirmatively.

Can Open Domain Question Answering Systems Answer Visual Knowledge Questions?

The task of Outside Knowledge Visual Question Answering (OKVQA) requires an automatic system to answer natural language questions about pictures and images using external knowledge. We observe that many visual questions, which contain deictic referential phrases referring to entities in the image, can be rewritten as "non-grounded" questions and can be answered by existing text-based question answering systems. This allows for the reuse of existing text-based Open Domain Question Answering (QA) Systems for visual question answering. In this work, we propose a potentially data-efficient approach that reuses existing systems for (a) image analysis, (b) question rewriting, and (c) text-based question answering to answer such visual questions. Given an image and a question pertaining to that image (a visual question), we first extract the entities present in the image using pre-trained object and scene classifiers. Using these detected entities, the visual questions can be rewritten so as to be answerable by open domain QA systems. We explore two rewriting strategies: (1) an unsupervised method using BERT for masking and rewriting, and (2) a weakly supervised approach that combines adaptive rewriting and reinforcement learning techniques to use the implicit feedback from the QA system. We test our strategies on the publicly available OKVQA dataset and obtain a competitive performance with state-of-the-art models while using only 10% of the training data.

Measured expanders

By measured graphs we mean graphs endowed with a measure on the set of vertices. In this context, we explore the relations between the appropriate Cheeger constant and Poincaré inequalities. We prove that the so-called Cheeger inequality holds in two cases: when the measure comes from a random walk, or when the measure has a bounded measure ratio. Moreover, we also prove that our measured (asymptotic) expanders are generalised expanders introduced by Tessera. Finally, we present some examples to demonstrate relations and differences between classical expander graphs and the measured ones. The current paper is motivated primarily by our previous work on the rigidity problem for Roe algebras.

A catalogue of 323 cataclysmic variables from LAMOST DR6

In this work, we present a catalog of cataclysmic variables (CVs) identified from the Sixth Data Release (DR6) of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). To single out the CV spectra, we introduce a novel machine-learning algorithm called UMAP to screen out a total of 169,509 H$α$-emission spectra, and obtain a classification accuracy of the algorithm of over 99.6$\%$ from the cross-validation set. We then apply the template matching program PyHammer v2.0 to the LAMOST spectra to obtain the optimal spectral type with metallicity, which helps us identify the chromospherically active stars and potential binary stars from the 169,509 spectra. After visually inspecting all the spectra, we identify 323 CV candidates from the LAMOST database, among them 52 objects are new. We further discuss the new CV candidates in subtypes based on their spectral features, including five DN subtype during outbursts, five NL subtype and four magnetic CVs (three AM Her type and one IP type). We also find two CVs that have been previously identified by photometry, and confirm their previous classification by the LAMOST spectra.

The strongly quasi-local coarse Novikov conjecture and Banach spaces with Property (H)

In this paper, we introduce a strongly quasi-local version of the coarse Novikov conjecture, which states that certain assembly map from the coarse $K$-homology of a metric space to the $K$-theory of its strongly quasi-local algebra is injective. We prove that the conjecture holds for metric spaces with bounded geometry which can be coarsely embedded into Banach spaces with Property (H), introduced by Kasparov and Yu. Besides, we also generalise the notion of strong quasi-locality to proper metric spaces and provide a (strongly) quasi-local picture for $K$-homology.

On the structure of asymptotic expanders

In this paper, we use geometric tools to study the structure of asymptotic expanders and show that a sequence of asymptotic expanders always admits a "uniform exhaustion by expanders". It follows that asymptotic expanders cannot be coarsely embedded into any $L^p$-space, and that asymptotic expanders can be characterised in terms of their uniform Roe algebra. Moreover, we provide uncountably many new counterexamples to the coarse Baum--Connes conjecture. These appear to be the first counterexamples that are not directly constructed by means of spectral gaps. Finally, we show that vertex-transitive asymptotic expanders are actually expanders. In particular, this gives a $C^*$-algebraic characterisation of expanders for vertex-transitive graphs.

Strongly Quasi-local algebras and their $K$-theories

In this paper, we introduce a notion of strongly quasi-local algebras. They are defined for each discrete metric space with bounded geometry, and sit between the Roe algebra and the quasi-local algebra. We show that strongly quasi-local algebras are coarse invariants, hence encoding coarse geometric information of the underlying spaces. We prove that for a discrete metric space with bounded geometry which admits a coarse embedding into a Hilbert space, the inclusion of the Roe algebra into the strongly quasi-local algebra induces an isomorphism in $K$-theory.

Asymptotic expansion in measure and strong ergodicity

In this paper, we introduce and study a notion of asymptotic expansion in measure for measurable actions. This generalises expansion in measure and provides a new perspective on the classical notion of strong ergodicity. Moreover, we obtain structure theorems for asymptotically expanding actions, showing that they admit exhaustions by domains of expansion. As an application, we recover a recent result of Marrakchi, characterising strong ergodicity in terms of local spectral gaps. We also show that homogeneous strongly ergodic actions are always expanding in measure and establish a connection between asymptotic expansion in measure and asymptotic expanders by means of approximating spaces.

Coarse median algebras: The intrinsic geometry of coarse median spaces and their intervals

This paper establishes a new combinatorial framework for the study of coarse median spaces, bridging the worlds of asymptotic geometry, algebra and combinatorics. We introduce a simple and entirely algebraic notion of coarse median algebra which simultaneously generalises the concepts of bounded geometry coarse median spaces and classical discrete median algebras. We study the coarse median universe from the perspective of intervals, with a particular focus on cardinality as a proxy for distance. In particular we prove that the metric on a quasi-geodesic coarse median space of bounded geometry can be constructed up to quasi-isometry using only the coarse median operator. Finally we develop a concept of rank for coarse median algebras in terms of the geometry of intervals and show that the notion of finite rank coarse median algebra provides a natural higher dimensional analogue of Gromov's concept of $δ$-hyperbolicity.
