Heavy flavor production under a strong magnetic field

The magnetic field created in high energy nuclear collisions will affect the dynamical processes in the QCD medium, especially the heavy quark production that happens in the initial stage of the collisions. We calculate in a strong magnetic field the heavy quark production cross section for the elementary process gg {\rightarrow} Q{\bar Q} at leading order and the corresponding transverse momentum distribution in nucleus-nucleus collisions. In comparison to the QED process, the heavy quark production is dominated by the unique QCD channel with gluon self-interaction. Due to the dimension reduction of quark phase space in a strong magnetic field, the production is concentrated in a very narrow energy region above the threshold. Since the translation invariance is broken, the production becomes anisotropic in magnetic field.

Bottomonium production in pp and heavy-ion collisions

We study bottomonium $b\bar b$ production in pp collisions as well as in heavy-ion collisions, using a quantal density matrix approach. The initial bottom (anti)quarks are provided by the PYTHIA event generator. We solve the Schrödinger equation for the $b\bar b$ pair, identifying the potential with the free energy, calculated with lattice QCD, to obtain the temperature dependent $b\bar b$ density matrix as well as the dissociation temperature. The formation of bottomonium is given by projection of the bottomonium density matrix onto the density matrix of the system. With this approach we describe the rapidity and transverse momentum distribution of the $Υ$(nS) in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV extending a similar calculation for the charmonium states \cite{Song:2017phm}. We employ the Remler formalism to study the $b\bar b$ production in heavy ion collisions in which the heavy quarks scatter elastically with partons from the quark gluon plasma (QGP). The elastic scattering of heavy (anti)quark in QGP is realized by the dynamical quasi-particle model (DQPM) and the expanding QGP is modeled by PHSD. We find that a reduction to 10 \% of the scattering cross section for a (anti)bottom quark with a QGP parton reproduces the experimental data. This suggests that due to color neutrality the scattering cross section of the small $b\bar b$ system with a parton is considerably smaller than twice the bottom-parton scattering cross section.

Heavy flavor as a probe of hot QCD matter produced in proton-proton collisions

The creation of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is expected in heavy ion collisions. It came as a surprise that proton-proton collisions at ultrarelativistic energies show as well a ``QGP-like'' behavior and signs of the creation of a fluid, although the corresponding system size is not more than a few cubic femtometers. Even more surprisingly, also heavy flavor particles seem to be part of the fluid or at least interact with it. In this paper, we will investigate in a quantitative way this ``collective behavior'' of heavy flavor, by employing the newly developed EPOS4HQ approach, which has proven to be compatible with basic experimental data of light flavor hadrons. We will investigate all observables, which may manifest collectivity, as particle spectra, elliptic flow, baryon-to-meson ratios, and two-particle correlations, and compare the results with experimental data. We will try to disentangle initial state effects, those being due to interactions between charm quarks and plasma partons, and final state effects (hadronization).

Quarkonium production in high energy $pp$ collisions

We investigate the charmonium and bottomonium production in $pp$ collisions using the Wigner densities formalism. The Wigner density of the quarkonia is approximated by analytical 3-D isotropic harmonic oscillator Wigner densities with the same root-mean-square radius given by the solution of the Schrödinger equation. This approach reproduces quite well the available experimental transverse momentum and rapidity distributions.

$J/ψ$ polarization in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Understanding the polarization property of $J/ψ$ is critical to constrain its production mechanism. In addition, the polarization of $J/ψ$ can reveal the impact of strong electromagnetic and vorticity fields in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this study, we analyzed the yield and polarization of $J/ψ$ in relativistic heavy ion collisions at different centrality and transverse momentum regions, using three different reference frames: the Collins-Soper frame, the helicity frame, and the event plane frame. The polarization of initially produced $J/ψ$ is determined by the NRQCD calculation and is similar to that of $pp$ collisions. However, both unpolarization and transverse polarization are considered for the regenerated $J/ψ$. Our results indicate that the polarization at high $p_T$ is similar to that observed in $pp$ collisions. However, at low $p_T$, where regenerated $J/ψ$ dominates, it is likely that the polarized charm quarks in the rotational QGP medium are responsible for this phenomenon. Our study supplies a baseline for future research on the effects of strong electromagnetic and vorticity fields on $J/ψ$ polarization.

Fully-heavy baryons $QQQ$ in vacuum and hot QCD medium

We study the properties of fully-heavy baryons in the vacuum and the hot QCD medium, which is created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Masses and wave functions of $Ω_{ccc}$, $Ω_{ccb}$, $Ω_{bbc}$, and $Ω_{bbb}$ up to the second radial excited states are obtained by solving the three-body Schrödinger equation with Hyperspherical Harmonics method. With parameters completely fixed by fitting quarkonium boundstates in vacuum, we predicted the masses for $1S$, $2S$, and $3S$ states of fully-heavy baryons. We also computed the temperature dependence of baryon masses and the thermal widths in a hot QCD medium. These properties are important to precise study of fully-heavy baryon production in heavy ion collisions.

Resonant screening in dense and magnetized QCD matter

We calculate the Debye screening mass in thermal, dense and magnetized QCD matter in the frame of resummed perturbation theory. In the limit of zero temperature, when the Landau energy level and Fermi surface of quarks match each other $μ_q^2=2n|qB|$, where $q$, $μ_q$ and $B$ are respectively the quark electric charge, chemical potential and external magnetic field, the screening mass diverges and the system is in the state of weakly interacting parton gas, which is very different from the known result of strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma at high temperature. The divergence disappears in thermal medium, but the screening mass oscillates with clear peaks at the matched magnetic field.

Detecting nuclear mass distribution in isobar collisions via charmonium

The collective properties of final state hadrons produced in the high statistics $_{44}^{96}$Ru+$_{44}^{96}$Ru and $_{40}^{96}$Zr+$_{40}^{96}$Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 200~\mathrm{GeV}$ are found to be significantly different. Such differences were argued to be precise probes of the difference in nucleon distribution in the isobar nuclei. We investigate the $J/ψ$ production in the isobar collision via a relativistic transport approach. By comparing the isobar systems according to equal centrality bin and equal multiplicity bin, we find that the yield ratio of $J/ψ$ is sensitive to the differences in both the number of binary collisions and the medium evolution. Besides, the elliptic flow $v_2$ of $J/ψ$ is qualitatively different from the light hadrons, and the ratio between Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions is sensitive to the medium evolution. The charmonium production provides an independent probe to study the nucleon distribution in the isobar system.

Bottom energy loss and non-prompt $J/ψ$ production in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We study the momentum and centrality dependence of the non-prompt $J/ψ$ nuclear modification factors ($R_{AA}$), which comes from the $B$ hadrons decay, in Pb-Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Bottom quarks are produced in the parton hard scatterings and suffer energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma and the hadronic gas, where the spatial and time evolution of the medium is described with the hydrodynamic equations. Medium-induced elastic scatterings and the radiation in bottom quarks are included in the energy loss of bottom quarks. The hadronization process of bottom quarks is described with the instantaneous coalescence model. After considering both cold and hot nuclear matter effects in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, we calculated the $R_{AA}$ and also the elliptic flows of non-prompt $J/ψ$ from the decay of $B$ mesons at different centralities and transverse momentum bins. The $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$ of non-prompt $J/ψ$ sensitive to the hot medium reflect and centrality supply an opportunity to study the bottom quarks energy loss in the hot medium.

Charmonium transport in the high-$μ_B$ medium

We employ the transport model coupled with hydrodynamic equations to study the charmonium dissociation and regeneration in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) with the large baryon chemical potential in Au-Au collisions at the energies of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ ($39$, $14.5$, $7.7$) GeV. The baryon chemical potential $μ_B$ is encoded in both Debye mass characterizing the heavy-quark potential and also the equation of state (EoS) of the bulk medium respectively. After considering $μ_B$-corrections in both heavy quarkonium and the QGP medium, we calculate the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ of charmonium. And find the $μ_B$ influence on charmonium production at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 39 and 14.5 GeV is negligible, while the $R_{AA}$ of charmonium is reduced considering $μ_B$ influence at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7$ GeV Au-Au collisions. It is crucial for studying charmonium production in low energy and also fixed-target heavy-ion collisions.

Investigation of the tetraquark states $Qq\bar{Q} \bar{q}$ in the improved chromomagnetic interaction model

In the framework of the improved chromomagnetic interaction model, we complete a systematic study of the $S$-wave tetraquark states $Qq\bar{Q}\bar{q}$ ($Q=c,b$, and $q=u,d,s$) with different quantum numbers, $J^{PC}=0^{+(+)}$, $1^{+(\pm)}$, and $2^{+(+)}$. The mass spectra of tetraquark states are predicted and the possible decay channels are analyzed by considering both the angular momentum and $\mathcal{C}$-parity conservation. The recently observed hidden-charm tetraquark states with strangeness, such as $Z_{cs}(3985)^-$, $X(3960)$, and $Z_{cs}(4220)^+$, can be well explained in our model. Besides, based on the wave function of each tetraquark state, we find that the low-lying states of each $Qq\bar{Q}\bar{q}$ configuration have a large overlap to the $Q\bar Q$ and $q\bar q$ meson basis, instead of $Q\bar q$ and $q\bar Q$ meson basis. This indicates one can search these tetraquark states in future experiments via the channel of $Q\bar Q$ and $q\bar q$ mesons.

Quantum color screening in external magnetic field

We calculate color screening mass in a thermalized and magnetized QCD matter in the frame of loop resummation theory without restriction to the magnetic field strength. Our full calculation covers the often used approximations for weak magnetic field at high temperature and strong magnetic field at low temperature. We find that while the magnetic field created in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies is probably the strongest one in nature, its effect on the QCD matter is still weaker in comparison with the high temperature of the fireball, and therefore can safely be treated as a perturbation.

A new Microscopic Model for $J/ψ$ Production in Heavy Ion Collisions

We present a new model for the creation of \J mesons in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, which allows to follow the individual heavy quarks from their creation until the detector through the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), which is formed in these collisions and described by the EPOS2 event generator. The \cc quarks interact via a potential, based on results of lattice gauge calculations. The annihilation and creation of \J is described by a density matrix approach whose time evolution is studied in the expanding system. The comparison with PbPb data at $\sqrt{s}$=5.02 TeV shows that this model can describe simultaneously the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$ of the \J at low transverse momen

Do we need dense matter equation of state in curved spacetime for neutron stars?

Neutron stars are regarded as natural laboratories for the study of dense strong interaction matter. The equation of state (EoS) of dense matter computed in flat spacetime is used to predict the structure of neutron stars by solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation. Recently, it has been reported that the curved spacetime effect or specifically gravitational time dilation effect on the EoS of dense matter leads to a significant increase of the maximum mass limit of neutron stars [Phys. Rev. D \textbf{104}, 123005 (2021) and J. Cosmol. Astropart. Phys. 02 (2021) 026]. However, in this work, we show that to study the hydrostatic equilibrium of dense matter within the framework of general relativity and relativistic fluid dynamics, the grand canonical EoS of dense matter, $p(T,μ)$, should be the same as that computed in flat spacetime, otherwise it is not consistent with local thermodynamic relations and energy-momentum conservation of the fluid. The gravitation influences the pressure $p$ only through enhancing the temperature $T$ and the chemical potential $μ$, known as Tolman's law and Klein's law. We rewrite the TOV equation as an alternative version so that the grand canonical EoS computed by using field theoretical methods can be used as a direct input. This may provide a tool to study the grand canonical EoS of dense matter via deep learning.

X(3872) Production in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

Heavy-ion collisions provide a unique opportunity to study the nature of X(3872) compared with electron-positron and proton-proton (antiproton) collisions. We investigate the centrality and momentum dependence of X(3872) in heavy-ion collisions via the Langevin equation and instant coalescence model (LICM). When X(3872) is treated as a compact tetraquark state, the tetraquarks are produced via the coalescence of heavy and light quarks near the quantum chromodynamic (QCD) phase transition due to the restoration of the heavy quark potential at $T\rightarrow T_c$. In the molecular scenario, loosely bound X(3872) is produced via the coalescence of $D^0$-$\bar D^{*0}$ mesons in a hadronic medium after kinetic freeze-out. We employ the LICM to explain both $D^0$ and $J/ψ$ production as a benchmark. Then we give predictions regarding X(3872) production and the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}^{X(3872)}$. We find that the total yield of tetraquark is several times larger than the molecular production in Pb-Pb collisions. Although the geometric size of the molecule is huge, the coalescence probability is small due to strict constraints on the relative momentum between $D^0$ and $\bar D^{*0}$ in the molecular Wigner function, which significantly suppresses the molecular yield.

Heavy-quark potential in Gribov-Zwanziger approach around deconfinement phase transition

The interaction potential between a pair of heavy quarks is calculated with resummed perturbation method in Gribov-Zwanziger approach at finite temperature. The resummed loop correction makes the potential complex. While the real part is, as expected, screened and becomes short-ranged in hot medium, the strength of the imaginary part increases with temperature and is comparable with the real part, which is very different from the previous calculation in HTL approach. This means that, both the color screening and Landau damping play important role in the dissociation of heavy flavor hadrons in hot medium.

Casimir effect in kinetic theory

We study Casimir effect in equilibrium and non-equilibrium photon gas in the frame of quantum kinetic theory for $U(1)$ gauge field. We derive first the transport, constraint and gauge fixing equations for the photon number distribution from Maxwell's equations, and then calculate the energy variation and Casimir force for a finite system by considering boundary condition on the surface of the system. The Casimir force in vacuum is suppressed by the thermal motion of photons in equilibrium state, when considering two adiabatic plates. In non-equilibrium state, the photon induced Casimir force oscillates and decays with time and finally disappears.

Incomplete electromagnetic response of hot QCD matter

The electromagnetic response of hot QCD matter to decaying external magnetic fields is investigated. We examine the validity of Ohm's law and find that the induced electric current increases from zero and relaxes towards the value from Ohm's law. The relaxation time is larger than the lifetime of the external magnetic field for the QCD matter in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The lower than expected electric current significantly suppresses the induced magnetic field and makes the electromagnetic response incomplete. We demonstrate the incomplete electromagnetic response of hot QCD matter by calculations employing the parton transport model combined with the solution of Maxwell's equations. Our results show a strong suppression by two orders of magnitude in the magnetic field, relatively to calculations assuming the validity of Ohm's law. This may undermine experimental efforts to measure magnetic-field-related effects in heavy-ion collisions.
