Wind energy forecasting with missing values within a fully conditional specification framework

Wind power forecasting is essential to power system operation and electricity markets. As abundant data became available thanks to the deployment of measurement infrastructures and the democratization of meteorological modelling, extensive data-driven approaches have been developed within both point and probabilistic forecasting frameworks. These models usually assume that the dataset at hand is complete and overlook missing value issues that often occur in practice. In contrast to that common approach, we rigorously consider here the wind power forecasting problem in the presence of missing values, by jointly accommodating imputation and forecasting tasks. Our approach allows inferring the joint distribution of input features and target variables at the model estimation stage based on incomplete observations only. We place emphasis on a fully conditional specification method owing to its desirable properties, e.g., being assumption-free when it comes to these joint distributions. Then, at the operational forecasting stage, with available features at hand, one can issue forecasts by implicitly imputing all missing entries. The approach is applicable to both point and probabilistic forecasting, while yielding competitive forecast quality within both simulation and real-world case studies. It confirms that by using a powerful universal imputation method like fully conditional specification, the proposed approach is superior to the common approach, especially in the context of probabilistic forecasting.

Rational $Q$-systems, Higgsing and Mirror Symmetry

The rational $Q$-system is an efficient method to solve Bethe ansatz equations for quantum integrable spin chains. We construct the rational $Q$-systems for generic Bethe ansatz equations described by an $A_{\ell-1}$ quiver, which include models with multiple momentum carrying nodes, generic inhomogeneities, generic diagonal twists and $q$-deformation. The rational $Q$-system thus constructed is specified by two partitions. Under Bethe/Gauge correspondence, the rational $Q$-system is in a one-to-one correspondence with a 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ quiver gauge theory of the type ${T}_{\boldsymbolρ}^{\boldsymbolσ}[SU(n)]$, which is also specified by the same partitions. This shows that the rational $Q$-system is a natural language for the Bethe/Gauge correspondence, because known features of the ${T}_{\boldsymbolρ}^{\boldsymbolσ}[SU(n)]$ theories readily translate. For instance, we show that the Higgs and Coulomb branch Higgsing correspond to modifying one of the partitions in the rational $Q$-system while keeping the other untouched. Similarly, mirror symmetry is realized in terms of the rational $Q$-system by simply swapping the two partitions - exactly as for ${T}_{\boldsymbolρ}^{\boldsymbolσ}[SU(n)]$. We exemplify the computational efficiency of the rational $Q$-system by evaluating topologically twisted indices for 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(n)$ SQCD theories with $n=1,\ldots,5$.

Experimental quantum secure network with digital signatures and encryption

Cryptography promises four information security objectives, namely, confidentiality, integrity, authenticity, and non-repudiation, to support trillions of transactions annually in the digital economy. Efficient digital signatures, ensuring the integrity, authenticity, and non-repudiation of data with information-theoretical security are highly urgent and intractable open problems in cryptography. Here, we propose a protocol of high-efficiency quantum digital signatures using secret sharing, one-time universal$_2$ hashing, and the one-time pad. We just need to use a 384-bit key to sign documents of up to $2^{64}$ lengths with a security bound of $10^{-19}$. If one-megabit document is signed, the signature efficiency is improved by more than $10^8$ times compared with previous quantum digital signature protocols. Furthermore, we build the first all-in-one quantum secure network integrating information-theoretically secure communication, digital signatures, secret sharing, and conference key agreement and experimentally demonstrate this signature efficiency advantage. Our work completes the cryptography toolbox of the four information security objectives.

Continuous and Distribution-free Probabilistic Wind Power Forecasting: A Conditional Normalizing Flow Approach

We present a data-driven approach for probabilistic wind power forecasting based on conditional normalizing flow (CNF). In contrast with the existing, this approach is distribution-free (as for non-parametric and quantile-based approaches) and can directly yield continuous probability densities, hence avoiding quantile crossing. It relies on a base distribution and a set of bijective mappings. Both the shape parameters of the base distribution and the bijective mappings are approximated with neural networks. Spline-based conditional normalizing flow is considered owing to its non-affine characteristics. Over the training phase, the model sequentially maps input examples onto samples of base distribution, given the conditional contexts, where parameters are estimated through maximum likelihood. To issue probabilistic forecasts, one eventually maps samples of the base distribution into samples of a desired distribution. Case studies based on open datasets validate the effectiveness of the proposed model, and allows us to discuss its advantages and caveats with respect to the state of the art.

Automated machine learning for secure key rate in discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV QKD) with discrete modulation has attracted increasing attention due to its experimental simplicity, lower-cost implementation and compatibility with classical optical communication. Correspondingly, some novel numerical methods have been proposed to analyze the security of these protocols against collective attacks, which promotes key rates over one hundred kilometers of fiber distance. However, numerical methods are limited by their calculation time and resource consumption, for which they cannot play more roles on mobile platforms in quantum networks. To improve this issue, a neural network model predicting key rates in nearly real time has been proposed previously. Here, we go further and show a neural network model combined with Bayesian optimization. This model automatically designs the best architecture of neural network computing key rates in real time. We demonstrate our model with two variants of CV QKD protocols with quaternary modulation. The results show high reliability with secure probability as high as $99.15\%-99.59\%$, considerable tightness and high efficiency with speedup of approximately $10^7$ in both cases. This inspiring model enables the real-time computation of unstructured quantum key distribution protocols' key rate more automatically and efficiently, which has met the growing needs of implementing QKD protocols on moving platforms.

Peacock patterns and resurgence in complex Chern-Simons theory

The partition function of complex Chern-Simons theory on a 3-manifold with torus boundary reduces to a finite dimensional state-integral which is a holomorphic function of a complexified Planck's constant $τ$ in the complex cut plane and an entire function of a complex parameter $u$. This gives rise to a vector of factorially divergent perturbative formal power series whose Stokes rays form a peacock-like pattern in the complex plane. We conjecture that these perturbative series are resurgent, their trans-series involve two non-perturbative variables, their Stokes automorphism satisfies a unique factorization property and that it is given explicitly in terms of a fundamental matrix solution to a (dual) linear $q$-difference equation. We further conjecture that entries of the Stokes automorphism matrix are the 3D-indices of Dimofte-Gaiotto-Gukov. We provide proofs of our statements regarding the $q$-difference equations and their properties of their fundamental solutions and illustrate our conjectures regarding the Stokes matrices with numerical calculations for the two simplest hyperbolic $4_1$ and $5_2$ knots.

Dielectric catastrophe at the Mott and Wigner transitions in a moiré superlattice

The metal-insulator transition (MIT) driven by electronic correlations is a fundamental and challenging problem in condensed-matter physics. Particularly, whether such a transition can be continuous remains open. The emergence of semiconducting moiré materials with continuously tunable bandwidth provides an ideal platform to study interaction-driven MITs. Although a bandwidth-tuned MIT at fixed full electron filling of the moiré superlattice has been reported recently, that at fractional filling, which involves translational symmetry breaking of the underlying superlattice, remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate bandwidth-tuned MITs in a MoSe2/WS2 moiré superlattice at both integer and fractional fillings using the exciton sensing technique. The bandwidth is controlled by an out-of-plane electric field. The dielectric response is probed optically with the 2s exciton in a remote WSe2 sensor layer. The exciton spectral weight is negligible for the metallic state, consistent with a large negative dielectric constant. It continuously vanishes when the transition is approached from the insulating side, corresponding to a diverging dielectric constant or a "dielectric catastrophe". Our results support continuous interaction-driven MITs in a two-dimensional triangular lattice and stimulate future explorations of exotic quantum phases, such as quantum spin liquids, in their vicinities.

Peacock patterns and new integer invariants in topological string theory

Topological string theory near the conifold point of a Calabi-Yau threefold gives rise to factorially divergent power series which encode the all-genus enumerative information. These series lead to infinite towers of singularities in their Borel plane (also known as "peacock patterns"), and we conjecture that the corresponding Stokes constants are integer invariants of the Calabi-Yau threefold. We calculate these Stokes constants in some toric examples, confirming our conjecture and providing in some cases explicit generating functions for the new integer invariants, in the form of q-series. Our calculations in the toric case rely on the TS/ST correspondence, which promotes the asymptotic series near the conifold point to spectral traces of operators, and makes it easier to identify the Stokes data. The resulting mathematical structure turns out to be very similar to the one of complex Chern-Simons theory. In particular, spectral traces correspond to state integral invariants and factorize in holomorphic/anti-holomorphic blocks.

Energy-Proportional Data Center Network Architecture Through OS, Switch and Laser Co-design

Optical interconnects are already the dominant technology in large-scale data center networks. However, the high optical loss of many optical components coupled with the low efficiency of laser sources result in high aggregate power requirements for the thousands of optical transceivers used by these networks. As optical interconnects stay always on even as traffic demands ebb and flow, most of this power is wasted. We present LC/DC, a data center network system architecture in which the operating system, the switch, and the optical components are co-designed to achieve energy proportionality. LC/DC capitalizes on the path divergence of data center networks to turn on and off redundant paths according to traffic demand, while maintaining full connectivity. Turning off redundant paths allows the optical transceivers and their electronic drivers to power down and save energy. Maintaining full connectivity hides the laser turn-on delay. At the node layer, intercepting send requests within the OS allows for the NIC's laser turn-on delay to be fully overlapped with TCP/IP packet processing, and thus egress links can remain powered off until needed with zero performance penalty. We demonstrate the feasibility of LC/DC by i) implementing the necessary modifications in the Linux kernel and device drivers, ii) implementing a 10Gbit/s FPGA switch, and iii) performing physical experiments with optical devices and circuit simulations. Our results on university data center traces and models of Facebook and Microsoft data center traffic show that LC/DC saves on average 60% of the optical transceivers power (68% max) at the cost of 6% higher packet delay.

Homodyne Detection Quadrature Phase Shift Keying Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution with High Excess Noise Tolerance

Discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution with homodyne detection is widely recognized for its ease of implementation, efficiency with respect to error correction, and its compatibility with modern optical communication devices. However, recent studies report that the application of homodyne detection obtains poor tolerance to excess noise and insufficient transmission distance, hence seriously restricting the large-scale deployment of quantum secure communication networks. In this paper, we propose a homodyne detection protocol using the quadrature phase shift keying technique. By limiting information leakage, our proposed protocol enhances excess noise tolerance to a high level. Furthermore, we demonstrate that homodyne detection performs better than heterodyne detection in quaternary-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution under the untrusted detector noise scenario. The security is analyzed using the tight numerical method against collective attacks in the asymptotic regime. Our results imply that the current protocol is able to distribute keys in nearly intercity area and thus paves the way for constructing low-cost quantum secure communication networks.

Interest-oriented Universal User Representation via Contrastive Learning

User representation is essential for providing high-quality commercial services in industry. Universal user representation has received many interests recently, with which we can be free from the cumbersome work of training a specific model for each downstream application. In this paper, we attempt to improve universal user representation from two points of views. First, a contrastive self-supervised learning paradigm is presented to guide the representation model training. It provides a unified framework that allows for long-term or short-term interest representation learning in a data-driven manner. Moreover, a novel multi-interest extraction module is presented. The module introduces an interest dictionary to capture principal interests of the given user, and then generate his/her interest-oriented representations via behavior aggregation. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the learned user representations.

Algebraic Analysis of Electric Load and Electricity Pricing

This paper presents a perspective of functional analysis to analyze electric load and electricity pricing in the $L_2$ space and its isomorphic vector space, which also yields the general algebraic model of load and pricing associated with time course. It clarifies law of interaction between payment and load associated with time course and necessity of pricing to sufficiently convey information on how load results in supply cost. It describes classic paradigm of modeling in a general algebraic form and formally proves the ineffectiveness of classic integral-based pricing in modeling. It consequently introduces to: describe electricity supply cost by a mapping defined on an isomorphic space of the original space of load constituted by orthonormal basis that quantifies the dynamism of load, named the space of dynamism; a pricing model defined on the space of dynamism that sufficiently conveys the information; a further derived computational model of pricing based on the Fourier series; simple examples to demonstrate use of the proposed pricing and its effectiveness in distinguishing loads and reflecting supply cost associated with time course, which theoretically completes the incentive to reshape loads.

Finite-key Analysis for Quantum Conference Key Agreement with Asymmetric Channels

As an essential ingredient of quantum networks, quantum conference key agreement (QCKA) provides unconditional secret keys among multiple parties, which enables only legitimate users to decrypt the encrypted message. Recently, some QCKA protocols employing twin-field was proposed to promote transmission distance. These protocols, however, suffer from relatively low conference key rate and short transmission distance over asymmetric channels, which demands a prompt solution in practice. Here, we consider a tripartite QCKA protocol utilizing the idea of sending-or-not-sending twin-field scheme and propose a high-efficiency QCKA over asymmetric channels by removing the symmetry parameters condition. Besides, we provide a composable finite-key analysis with rigorous security proof against general attacks by exploiting the entropic uncertainty relation for multiparty system. Our protocol greatly improves the feasibility to establish conference keys over asymmetric channels.

Secure Quantum Secret Sharing without Signal Disturbance Monitoring

Quantum secret sharing (QSS) is an essential primitive for the future quantum internet, which promises secure multiparty communication. However, developing a large-scale QSS network is a huge challenge due to the channel loss and the requirement of multiphoton interference or high-fidelity multipartite entanglement distribution. Here, we propose a three-user QSS protocol without monitoring signal disturbance, which is capable of ensuring the unconditional security. The final key rate of our protocol can be demonstrated to break the Pirandola-Laurenza-Ottaviani-Banchi bound of quantum channel and its simulated transmission distance can approach over 600 km using current techniques. Our results pave the way to realizing high-rate and large-scale QSS networks.

High key rate quantum conference key agreement with unconditional security

Quantum cryptography is a major ingredient of the future quantum internet that promises various secure communication tasks. Quantum conference key agreement (CKA) is an important cryptographic primitive of quantum cryptography, which provides the conference key among multiple users simultaneously. However, quantum CKA is currently far from practical application due to the low conference key rate. Here, we propose a quantum CKA protocol of three users with information-theoretic security. Our protocol only requires phase-randomized weak coherent sources and threshold single-photon detectors, and is anticipated to be experimentally demonstrated over 600 km under current technology. Our scheme can be widely implemented in the approaching large-scale quantum network.

Coherent one-way quantum conference key agreement based on twin field

Quantum conference key agreement (CKA) enables key sharing among multiple trusted users with information-theoretic security. Currently, the key rates of most quantum CKA protocols suffer from the limit of the total efficiency among quantum channels. Inspired by the coherent one-way and twin-field quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols, we propose a quantum CKA protocol of three users. Exploiting coherent states with intensity 0 and $μ$ to encode logic bits, our protocol can break the limit. Additionally, the requirements of phase randomization and multiple intensity modulation are removed in our protocol, making its experimental demonstration simple.

Dipolar excitonic insulator in a moire lattice

Two-dimensional (2D) moire materials provide a new solid-state platform with unprecedented controllability for studies of correlated quantum phenomena. To date, experimental studies have focused on the correlated electronic states; the correlated bosonic states in moire materials have remained practically unexplored. Here, we report a correlated dipolar excitonic insulator, a charge insulating state driven by the formation of excitons, in a Coulomb-coupled WSe2 monolayer and WSe2/WS2 moire bilayer at total hole doping density equal to the moire density. The system is a Mott insulator when all the holes reside in the moire layer. Under an out-of-plane electric field, the holes can be continuously transferred to the WSe2 monolayer, but remain strongly bound to the empty moire sites; they form an interlayer exciton fluid in the moire superlattice under a particle-hole transformation. We identify the phase space and determine the charge gap energy of the excitonic insulating state by optical spectroscopy and capacitance measurements, respectively. We further observe the emergence of local magnetic moments in the WSe2 monolayer induced by the strong interlayer Coulomb correlation. Our demonstration of an exciton fluid in a lattice paves the path for realizing correlated bosonic quantum phenomena described by the Bose-Hubbard model in a solid-state system.
