Progressive Sparse Local Attention for Video object detection

Transferring image-based object detectors to the domain of videos remains a challenging problem. Previous efforts mostly exploit optical flow to propagate features across frames, aiming to achieve a good trade-off between accuracy and efficiency. However, introducing an extra model to estimate optical flow can significantly increase the overall model size. The gap between optical flow and high-level features can also hinder it from establishing spatial correspondence accurately. Instead of relying on optical flow, this paper proposes a novel module called Progressive Sparse Local Attention (PSLA), which establishes the spatial correspondence between features across frames in a local region with progressively sparser stride and uses the correspondence to propagate features. Based on PSLA, Recursive Feature Updating (RFU) and Dense Feature Transforming (DenseFT) are proposed to model temporal appearance and enrich feature representation respectively in a novel video object detection framework. Experiments on ImageNet VID show that our method achieves the best accuracy compared to existing methods with smaller model size and acceptable runtime speed.

A Room Temperature Polariton Light-Emitting Diode Based on Monolayer WS2

Half-light half-matter quasiparticles termed exciton-polaritons arise through the strong coupling of excitons and cavity photons. They have been used to demonstrate a wide array of fundamental phenomena and potential applications ranging from Bose-Einstein like condensation to analog Hamiltonian simulators and chip-scale interferometers. Recently the two dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) owing to their large exciton binding energies, oscillator strength and valley degree of freedom have emerged as a very attractive platform to realize exciton-polaritons at elevated temperatures. Achieving electrical injection of polaritons is attractive both as a precursor to realizing electrically driven polariton lasers as well as for high speed light-emitting diodes (LED) for communication systems. Here we demonstrate an electrically driven polariton LED operating at room temperature using monolayer tungsten disulphide (WS2) as the emissive material. To realize this device, the monolayer WS2 is sandwiched between thin hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) tunnel barriers with graphene layers acting as the electrodes. The entire tunnel LED structure is embedded inside a one-dimensional distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) based microcavity structure. The extracted external quantum efficiency is ~0.1% and is comparable to recent demonstrations of bulk organic and carbon nanotube based polariton electroluminescence (EL) devices. The possibility to realize electrically driven polariton LEDs in atomically thin semiconductors at room temperature presents a promising step towards achieving an inversionless electrically driven laser in these systems as well as for ultrafast microcavity LEDs using van der Waals materials.

Blowup Equations for 6d SCFTs. I

We propose novel functional equations for the BPS partition functions of 6d (1,0) SCFTs, which can be regarded as an elliptic version of Gottsche-Nakajima-Yoshioka's K-theoretic blowup equations. From the viewpoint of geometric engineering, these are the generalized blowup equations for refined topological strings on certain local elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. We derive recursion formulas for elliptic genera of self-dual strings on the tensor branch from these functional equations and in this way obtain a universal approach for determining refined BPS invariants. As examples, we study in detail the minimal 6d SCFTs with SU(3) and SO(8) gauge symmetry. In companion papers, we will study the elliptic blowup equations for all other non-Higgsable clusters.

Computing the elliptic genus of higher rank E-strings from genus 0 GW invariants

We show that the elliptic genus of the higher rank E-strings can be computed based solely on the genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants of the corresponding elliptic geometry. To set up our computation, we study the structure of the topological string free energy on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds both in the unrefined and the refined case, determining the maximal amount of the modular structure of the partition function that can be salvaged. In the case of fibrations exhibiting only isolated fibral curves, we show that the principal parts of the topological string partition function at given base-wrapping can be computed from the knowledge of the genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants at this base-wrapping, and the partition function at lower base-wrappings. For the class of geometries leading to the higher rank E-strings, this leads to the result stated in the opening sentence.

Instantons in the Hofstadter butterfly: difference equation, resurgence and quantum mirror curves

We study the Harper-Hofstadter Hamiltonian and its corresponding non-perturbative butterfly spectrum. The problem is algebraically solvable whenever the magnetic flux is a rational multiple of $2π$. For such values of the magnetic flux, the theory allows a formulation with two Bloch or $θ$-angles. We treat the problem by the path integral formulation, and show that the spectrum receives instanton corrections. Instantons as well as their one loop fluctuation determinants are found explicitly and the finding is matched with the numerical band width of the butterfly spectrum. We extend the analysis to all 2-instanton sectors with different $θ$-angle dependence to leading order and show consistency with numerics. We further argue that the instanton--anti-instanton contributions are ambiguous and cancel the ambiguity of the perturbation series, as they should. We hint at the possibility of exact 2-instanton solutions responsible for such contributions via Picard-Lefschetz theory. We also present a powerful way to compute the perturbative fluctuations around the 1-instanton saddle as well as the instanton--anti-instanton ambiguity by using the topological string formulation.

Argyres-Douglas theories, Painlevé II and quantum mechanics

We show in details that the all-orders genus expansion of the two-cut Hermitian cubic matrix model reproduces the perturbative expansion of the $H_1$ Argyres-Douglas theory coupled to the $Ω$ background. In the self-dual limit we use the Painlevé/gauge correspondence and we show that, after summing over all instanton sectors, the two-cut cubic matrix model computes the tau function of Painlevé II without taking any double scaling limit or adding any external fields. We decode such solution within the context of trans-series. Finally in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit we connect the $H_1$ and the $H_0$ Argyres-Douglas theories to the quantum mechanical models with cubic and double well potentials.

Topological Strings on Singular Elliptic Calabi-Yau 3-folds and Minimal 6d SCFTs

We apply the modular approach to computing the topological string partition function on non-compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds with higher Kodaira singularities in the fiber. The approach consists in making an ansatz for the partition function at given base degree, exact in all fiber classes to arbitrary order and to all genus, in terms of a rational function of weak Jacobi forms. Our results yield, at given base degree, the elliptic genus of the corresponding non-critical 6d string, and thus the associated BPS invariants of the 6d theory. The required elliptic indices are determined from the chiral anomaly 4-form of the 2d worldsheet theories, or the 8-form of the corresponding 6d theories, and completely fix the holomorphic anomaly equation constraining the partition function. We introduce subrings of the known rings of Weyl invariant Jacobi forms which are adapted to the additional symmetries of the partition function, making its computation feasible to low base wrapping number. In contradistinction to the case of simpler singularities, generic vanishing conditions on BPS numbers are no longer sufficient to fix the modular ansatz at arbitrary base wrapping degree. We show that to low degree, imposing exact vanishing conditions does suffice, and conjecture this to be the case generally.

Interacting polariton fluids in a monolayer of tungsten disulfide

Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) possess a number of properties that make them attractive for realizing room-temperature polariton devices. An ideal platform for manipulating polariton fluids within monolayer TMDs is that of Bloch surface waves, which confine the electric field to a small volume near the surface of a dielectric mirror. Here we demonstrate that monolayer tungsten disulfide ($\text{WS}_2$) can sustain Bloch surface wave polaritons (BSWPs) with a Rabi splitting of 43 meV and propagation constants reaching 33 $μ$m. In addition, we evidence strong polariton-polariton nonlinearities within BSWPs, which manifest themselves as a reversible blueshift of the lower polariton resonance by up to 12.9$\pm$0.5 meV. Such nonlinearities are at the heart of polariton devices and have not yet been demonstrated in TMD polaritons. As a proof of concept, we use the nonlinearity to implement a nonlinear polariton source. Our results demonstrate that BSWPs using TMDs can support long-range propagation combined with strong nonlinearities, enabling potential applications in integrated optical processing and polaritonic circuits.

Refined BPS invariants of 6d SCFTs from anomalies and modularity

F-theory compactifications on appropriate local elliptic Calabi-Yau manifolds engineer six dimensional superconformal field theories and their mass deformations. The partition function $Z_{top}$ of the refined topological string on these geometries captures the particle BPS spectrum of this class of theories compactified on a circle. Organizing $Z_{top}$ in terms of contributions $Z_β$ at base degree $β$ of the elliptic fibration, we find that these, up to a multiplier system, are meromorphic Jacobi forms of weight zero with modular parameter the Kaehler class of the elliptic fiber and elliptic parameters the couplings and mass parameters. The indices with regard to the multiple elliptic parameters are fixed by the refined holomorphic anomaly equations, which we show to be completely determined from knowledge of the chiral anomaly of the corresponding SCFT. We express $Z_β$ as a quotient of weak Jacobi forms, with a universal denominator inspired by its pole structure as suggested by the form of $Z_{top}$ in terms of 5d BPS numbers. The numerator is determined by modularity up to a finite number of coefficients, which we prove to be fixed uniquely by imposing vanishing conditions on 5d BPS numbers as boundary conditions. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach with many examples, in particular solving the E-string and M-string theories including mass deformations, as well as theories constructed as chains of these. We make contact with previous work by showing that spurious singularities are cancelled when the partition function is written in the form advocated here. Finally, we use the BPS invariants of the E-string thus obtained to test a generalization of the Goettsche-Nakajima-Yoshioka $K$-theoretic blowup equation, as inspired by the Grassi-Hatsuda-Marino conjecture, to generic local Calabi-Yau threefolds.

High order perturbation theory for difference equations and Borel summability of quantum mirror curves

We adapt the Bender-Wu algorithm to solve perturbatively but very efficiently the eigenvalue problem of "relativistic" quantum mechanical problems whose Hamiltonians are difference operators of the exponential-polynomial type. We implement the algorithm in the function BWDifference in the updated Mathematica package BenderWu. With the help of BWDifference, we survey quantum mirror curves of toric fano Calabi-Yau threefolds, and find strong evidence that not only are the perturbative eigenenergies of the associated 1d quantum mechanical problems Borel summable, but also that the Borel sums are exact.

Operators and higher genus mirror curves

We perform further tests of the correspondence between spectral theory and topological strings, focusing on mirror curves of genus greater than one with nontrivial mass parameters. In particular, we analyze the geometry relevant to the SU(3) relativistic Toda lattice, and the resolved C^3/Z_6 orbifold. Furthermore, we give evidence that the correspondence holds for arbitrary values of the mass parameters, where the quantization problem leads to resonant states. We also explore the relation between this correspondence and cluster integrable systems.

A Random Matrix Theoretical Approach to Early Event Detection in Smart Grid

Power systems are developing very fast nowadays, both in size and in complexity; this situation is a challenge for Early Event Detection (EED). This paper proposes a data- driven unsupervised learning method to handle this challenge. Specifically, the random matrix theories (RMTs) are introduced as the statistical foundations for random matrix models (RMMs); based on the RMMs, linear eigenvalue statistics (LESs) are defined via the test functions as the system indicators. By comparing the values of the LES between the experimental and the theoretical ones, the anomaly detection is conducted. Furthermore, we develop 3D power-map to visualize the LES; it provides a robust auxiliary decision-making mechanism to the operators. In this sense, the proposed method conducts EED with a pure statistical procedure, requiring no knowledge of system topologies, unit operation/control models, etc. The LES, as a key ingredient during this procedure, is a high dimensional indictor derived directly from raw data. As an unsupervised learning indicator, the LES is much more sensitive than the low dimensional indictors obtained from supervised learning. With the statistical procedure, the proposed method is universal and fast; moreover, it is robust against traditional EED challenges (such as error accumulations, spurious correlations, and even bad data in core area). Case studies, with both simulated data and real ones, validate the proposed method. To manage large-scale distributed systems, data fusion is mentioned as another data processing ingredient.

Exact solutions to quantum spectral curves by topological string theory

We generalize the conjectured connection between quantum spectral problems and topological strings to many local almost del Pezzo surfaces with arbitrary mass parameters. The conjecture uses perturbative information of the topological string in the unrefined and the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit to solve non-perturbatively the quantum spectral problem. We consider the quantum spectral curves for the local almost del Pezzo surfaces of $\mathbb{F}_2$, $\mathbb{F}_1$, the blowup of $\mathbb{P}^2$ in two points and a mass deformation of the $E_8$ del Pezzo corresponding to different deformations of the three-term operators $\mathsf{O}_{1,1}$, $\mathsf{O}_{1,2}$ and $\mathsf{O}_{2,3}$. To check the conjecture, we compare the predictions for the spectrum of these operators with numerical results for the eigenvalues. We also compute the first few fermionic spectral traces from the conjectural spectral determinant, and we compare them to analytic and numerical results in spectral theory. In all these comparisons, we find that the conjecture is fully validated with high numerical precision. For local $\mathbb{F}_2$ we expand the spectral determinant around the orbifold point and find intriguing relations for Jacobi theta functions. We also give an explicit map between the geometries of $\mathbb{F}_0$ and $\mathbb{F}_2$ as well as a systematic way to derive the operators $\mathsf{O}_{m,n}$ from toric geometries.

A note on colored HOMFLY polynomials for hyperbolic knots from WZW models

Using the correspondence between Chern-Simons theories and Wess-Zumino-Witten models we present the necessary tools to calculate colored HOMFLY polynomials for hyperbolic knots. For two-bridge hyperbolic knots we derive the colored HOMFLY invariants in terms of crossing matrices of the underlying Wess-Zumino-Witten model. Our analysis extends previous works by incorporating non-trivial multiplicities for the primaries appearing in the crossing matrices, so as to describe colorings of HOMFLY invariants beyond the totally symmetric or anti-symmetric representations of SU(N). The crossing matrices directly relate to 6j-symbols of the quantum group U_q(su(N)). We present powerful methods to calculate such quantum 6j-symbols for general N. This allows us to determine previously unknown colored HOMFLY polynomials for two-bridge hyperbolic knots. We give explicitly the HOMFLY polynomials colored by the representation {2,1} for two-bridge hyperbolic knots with up to eight crossings. Yet, the scope of application of our techniques goes beyond knot theory; e.g., our findings can be used to study correlators in Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theories or -- in the limit to classical groups -- to determine color factors for Yang Mills amplitudes.

Non-Geometric F-Theory-Heterotic Duality

In this work we study the duality between F-theory and the heterotic string beyond the stable degeneration limit in F-theory and large fiber limit in the heterotic theory. Building upon a recent proposal by Clingher-Doran and Malmendier-Morrison, which phrases the duality on the heterotic side for a particular class of models in terms of (fibered) genus two curves as non-geometric heterotic compactifications - we establish the precise limit to the semi-classical heterotic string in both eight and lower space-time dimensions. In particular for six dimensional theories, we argue that this class of non-geometric heterotic compactifications capture alpha'-quantum corrections to the semi-classical heterotic supergravity compactifications on elliptically fibered K3 surfaces. From the non-geometric heterotic theory, the semi-classical phase on the K3 surface is recovered from a remarkable limit of genus two Siegel modular forms combined with a geometric surgery operation. Finally, in four dimensions we analyze another limit deep in the quantum regime of the non-geometric heterotic string, which we refer to as the heterotic Sen limit. In this limit we can explicitly argue that the semi-classical two-staged fibrational structure of the heterotic hypermultiplet moduli space - recently established by Alexandrov, Louis, Pioline and Valandro - gets corrected by quantum effects.

Knot Invariants from Topological Recursion on Augmentation Varieties

Using the duality between Wilson loop expectation values of SU(N) Chern-Simons theory on $S^3$ and topological open-string amplitudes on the local mirror of the resolved conifold, we study knots on $S^3$ and their invariants encoded in colored HOMFLY polynomials by means of topological recursion. In the context of the local mirror Calabi-Yau threefold of the resolved conifold, we generalize the topological recursion of the remodelled B-model in order to study branes beyond the class of toric Harvey-Lawson special Lagrangians -- as required for analyzing non-trivial knots on $S^3$. The basic ingredients for the proposed recursion are the spectral curve, given by the augmentation variety of the knot, and the calibrated annulus kernel, encoding the topological annulus amplitudes associated to the knot. We present an explicit construction of the calibrated annulus kernel for torus knots and demonstrate the validity of the topological recursion. We further argue that -- if an explicit form of the calibrated annulus kernel is provided for any other knot -- the proposed topological recursion should still be applicable. We study the implications of our proposal for knot theory, which exhibit interesting consequences for colored HOMFLY polynomials of mutant knots.

Surface effect on the wrinkling of an elastic sheet under tension

Wrinkling of stretched elastic sheets is widely observed, and the scaling relations between the amplitude and wavelength of the wrinkles have been proposed by Cerda and Mahadevan. However, the surface effects should be taken into account when the sheet is even thinner. The surface energy was considered in this work, and the discrepancies with the classical theory has been discussed. A dimensionless parameter has been proposed to represent the size-dependence. A method of characterizing mechanical properties of thin film using wrinkles considering surface effects has also been proposed.

Quantum Action Principle with Generalized Uncertainty Principle

One of the common features in all promising candidates of quantum gravity is the existence of a minimal length scale, which naturally emerges with a generalized uncertainty principle, or equivalently a modified commutation relation. Schwinger's quantum action principle was modified to incorporate this modification, and was applied to the calculation of the kernel of a free particle, partly recovering the result previously studied using path integral.
