A 3D Non-Stationary Channel Model for 6G Wireless Systems Employing Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces with Practical Phase Shifts

In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) geometry based stochastic model (GBSM) for a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system employing practical discrete intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is proposed. The proposed channel model supports the scenario where both transceivers and environments move. The evolution of clusters in the space domain and the practical discrete phase shifts are considered in the channel model. The steering vector is set at the base station for the cooperation with IRS. Through studying statistical properties, the non-stationary properties are verified. We find that IRS plays a role in separating the whole channel and make the absolute value of time autocorrelation function (ACF) larger than the situation without employing IRS. Time ACF of the case using discrete phase shifts is also compared with the continuous case.

A Multi-Size Neural Network with Attention Mechanism for Answer Selection

Semantic matching is of central significance to the answer selection task which aims to select correct answers for a given question from a candidate answer pool. A useful method is to employ neural networks with attention to generate sentences representations in a way that information from pair sentences can mutually influence the computation of representations. In this work, an effective architecture,multi-size neural network with attention mechanism (AM-MSNN),is introduced into the answer selection task. This architecture captures more levels of language granularities in parallel, because of the various sizes of filters comparing with single-layer CNN and multi-layer CNNs. Meanwhile it extends the sentence representations by attention mechanism, thus containing more information for different types of questions. The empirical study on three various benchmark tasks of answer selection demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed model in all the benchmarks and its superiority over competitors. The experimental results show that (1) multi-size neural network (MSNN) is a more useful method to capture abstract features on different levels of granularities than single/multi-layer CNNs; (2) the attention mechanism (AM) is a better strategy to derive more informative representations; (3) AM-MSNN is a better architecture for the answer selection task for the moment.

A General 3D Space-Time-Frequency Non-Stationary THz Channel Model for 6G Ultra-Massive MIMO Wireless Communication Systems

In this paper, a novel three-dimensional (3D) space-time-frequency (STF) non-stationary geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) is proposed for the sixth generation (6G) terahertz (THz) wireless communication systems. The proposed THz channel model is very general having the capability to capture different channel characteristics in multiple THz application scenarios such as indoor scenarios, device-to-device (D2D) communications, ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, and long traveling paths of users. Also, the generality of the proposed channel model is demonstrated by the fact that it can easily be reduced to different simplified channel models to fit specific scenarios by properly adjusting model parameters. The proposed general channel model takes into consideration the non-stationarities in space, time, and frequency domains caused by ultra-massive MIMO, long traveling paths, and large bandwidths of THz communications, respectively. Statistical properties of the proposed general THz channel model are investigated. The accuracy and generality of the proposed channel model are verified by comparing the simulation results of the relative angle spread and root mean square (RMS) delay spread with corresponding channel measurements.

Neural Network Model for Structure Factor of Polymer Systems

As an important physical quantity to understand the internal structure of polymer chains, the structure factor is being studied both in theory and experiment. Theoretically, the structure factor of Gaussian chains have been solved analytically, but for wormlike chains, numerical approaches are often used, such as Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, solving modified diffusion equation (MDE), etc. In those works, the structure factor needs to be calculated differently for different regions of the wave vector and chain rigidity, and some calculation processes are resource consuming. In this work, by training a deep neural network (NN), we obtained an efficient model to calculate the structure factor of polymer chains, without considering different regions of wavenumber and chain rigidity. Furthermore, based on the trained neural network model, we predicted the contour and Kuhn length of some polymer chains by using scattering experimental data, and we found our model can get pretty reasonable predictions. This work provides a method to obtain structure factor for polymer chains, which is as good as previous, and with a more computationally efficient. Also, it provides a potential way for the experimental researchers to measure the contour and Kuhn length of polymer chains.

GAN-Based Interactive Reinforcement Learning from Demonstration and Human Evaluative Feedback

Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) has achieved great successes in many simulated tasks. The sample inefficiency problem makes applying traditional DRL methods to real-world robots a great challenge. Generative Adversarial Imitation Learning (GAIL) -- a general model-free imitation learning method, allows robots to directly learn policies from expert trajectories in large environments. However, GAIL shares the limitation of other imitation learning methods that they can seldom surpass the performance of demonstrations. In this paper, to address the limit of GAIL, we propose GAN-Based Interactive Reinforcement Learning (GAIRL) from demonstration and human evaluative feedback by combining the advantages of GAIL and interactive reinforcement learning. We tested our proposed method in six physics-based control tasks, ranging from simple low-dimensional control tasks -- Cart Pole and Mountain Car, to difficult high-dimensional tasks -- Inverted Double Pendulum, Lunar Lander, Hopper and HalfCheetah. Our results suggest that with both optimal and suboptimal demonstrations, a GAIRL agent can always learn a more stable policy with optimal or close to optimal performance, while the performance of the GAIL agent is upper bounded by the performance of demonstrations or even worse than it. In addition, our results indicate the reason that GAIRL is superior over GAIL is the complementary effect of demonstrations and human evaluative feedback.

Lipschitz property of harmonic mappings with respect to the pseudo-hyperbolic metric

In this paper, we show that harmonic Bloch mappings are Lipschitz continuous with respect to the pseudo-hyperbolic metric. This result improves the corresponding result of Theorem 1 of [P. Ghatage, J. Yan, and D. Zheng, Composition operators with closed range on the Bloch space, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 129 (2000), 2039-2044]. Furthermore, we prove the similar property for harmonic quasiregular Bloch-type mappings.

A Game Generative Network Framework with its Application to Relationship Inference

A game process is a system where the decisions of one agent can influence the decisions of other agents. In the real world, social influences and relationships between agents may influence the decision makings of agents with game behaviors. And in turn, this also gives us the opportunity to mine such information from agents by the observed interactions of them in a game process. In this paper, we propose a Game Generative Network (GGN) framework that utilizes the deviation between the real game outcome and the ideal game model to generate networks for game processes, which opens a door for understanding agents with game behaviors by network mining approaches. We illustrate how to apply GGNs to infer the hidden relationships between agents with game behaviors and conduct experiments on team games as a concrete example. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed framework can reveal the hidden relationships of agents in such games.

A 3D Non-Stationary Channel Model for 6G Wireless Systems Employing Intelligent Reflecting Surface

As one of the key technologies for the sixth generation (6G) mobile communications, intelligent reflecting surface IRS) has the advantages of low power consumption, low cost, and simple design methods. But channel modeling is still an open issue in this field currently. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) geometry based stochastic model (GBSM) for a massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system employing IRS. The model supports the movements of the transmitter, the receiver, and clusters. The evolution of clusters on the linear array and planar array is also considered in the proposed model. In addition, the generation of reflecting coefficient is incorporated into the model and the path loss of the sub-channel assisted by IRS is also proposed. The steering vector is set up at the base station for the cooperation with IRS. Through studying statistical properties such as the temporal autocorrelation function and space correlation function, the nonstationary properties are verified. The good agreement between the simulation results and the analytical results illustrates the correctness of the proposed channel model.

Design of simple stellarator using tilted toroidal field coils

This paper deals with the design of the stellarator field with the simple coil set. In order to realize the stellarator field by the simple coil set, the tilted toroidal field coil uses for creating the rotational transform. Sixteen tilted TF coils create the small radial field and large vertical field. With reducing the vertical field of the tilted toroidal field coil by the axisymmetric poloidal field coil, the stellarator field can be made. The formation of clear and nested flux surfaces is confirmed, and the rotational transform is proportional to the tilting angle of the toroidal field coil. Main components of the magnetic field for the simple stellarator in this paper are the large mirror ripple and small helical ripple. This is a similar property to the quasi-isodynamic configuration like the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator. The collisionless orbit for the proton is studied. For a moderate tilting angle of the toroidal field coil, the confinement of the passing and trapped particles improves.

Exploring Semantic Capacity of Terms

We introduce and study semantic capacity of terms. For example, the semantic capacity of artificial intelligence is higher than that of linear regression since artificial intelligence possesses a broader meaning scope. Understanding semantic capacity of terms will help many downstream tasks in natural language processing. For this purpose, we propose a two-step model to investigate semantic capacity of terms, which takes a large text corpus as input and can evaluate semantic capacity of terms if the text corpus can provide enough co-occurrence information of terms. Extensive experiments in three fields demonstrate the effectiveness and rationality of our model compared with well-designed baselines and human-level evaluations.

Spatial distributions of Balmer series emissions in divertor plasmas with tungsten targets in different magnetic configurations on the EAST superconducting tokamak

The characteristics of wall recycling with different divertor configurations were investigated in this study, focusing on the observations of the spatial distributions of deuterium atomic emissions in the Balmer series (D_α, D_β, D_γ, and D_δ) with different magnetic field configurations in the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak. The observed D_α and D_β emissions were primarily relatively close to the divertor targets, while the D_γ and D_δ emissions were primarily relatively close to the X-point. The distributions of the emissions close to the divertor targets and X-point changed differently depending on the divertor configuration. These experimental results indicate that the linear comparison of parameters based on an assumption of similarity of profile shapes in different configurations is insufficient for understanding particle recycling in divertor plasmas. This is because the shape of the density profile of the recycled deuterium atoms and/or the electron density and temperature may change when the magnetic configuration is altered.

Multi-Frequency Multi-Scenario Millimeter Wave MIMO Channel Measurements and Modeling for B5G Wireless Communication Systems

Millimeter wave (mmWave) bands have been utilized for the fifth generation (5G) communication systems and will no doubt continue to be deployed for beyond 5G (B5G). However, the underlying channels are not fully investigated at multifrequency bands and in multi-scenarios by using the same channel sounder, especially for the outdoor, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) conditions. In this paper, we conduct multi-frequency multi-scenario mmWave MIMO channel measurements with 4*4 antennas at 28, 32, and 39 GHz bands for three cases, i.e., the human body and vehicle blockage measurements, outdoor path loss measurements, and V2V measurements. The channel characteristics, including blockage effect, path loss and coverage range, and non-stationarity and spatial consistency, are thoroughly studied. The blockage model, path loss model, and time-varying channel model are proposed for mmWave MIMO channels. The channel measurement and modeling results will be of great importance for further mmWave communication system deployments in indoor hotspot, outdoor, and vehicular network scenarios for B5G.

Boundary Schwarz lemma for harmonic mappings having zero of order $p$

Suppose $w$ is a sense-preserving harmonic mapping of the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ such that $w(\mathbb{D})\subseteq\mathbb{D}$ and $w$ has a zero of order $p\geq1$ at $z=0$. In this paper, we first improve the Schwarz lemma for $w$, and then, we establish its boundary Schwarz lemma. Moreover, by using the automorphism of $\mathbb{D}$, we further generalize this result.

Output Based Adaptive Distributed Output Observer for Leader-follower Multiagent Systems

The adaptive distributed observer approach has been an effective tool for synthesizing a distributed control law for solving various control problems of leader-follower multiagent systems. However, the existing adaptive distributed observer needs to make use of the full state of the leader system. This assumption not only precludes many practical applications in which only the output of the leader system is available, but also leads to a high dimension observer. In this communique, we propose an adaptive distributed output observer which only makes use of the output of the leader system, and is thus more practical than the state based adaptive distributed observer. Moreover, the dimension and the information exchange among agents of the proposed adaptive distributed output observer can be significantly smaller than those of the state based adaptive distributed output observer.

An updated version of "Leader-following consensus for linear multi-agent systems via asynchronous sampled-data control," IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, DOI:10.1109/TAC.2019.2948256

In this article, we update the reference [14] in two aspects. First, we note that in order for the control law (12) in [14] to be equivalent to the control law (3) in [14], we need to assume that the samplings for all subsystems must be synchronous, i.e., we need to assume that $T_{i}=T$ for all $i=1,\cdots,N$. Second, we extend our results from periodic sampling to aperiodic sampling.

Origin of superconductivity and giant phonon softening in TlInTe$_2$ under pressure

Analogous to 2D layered transition metal dichalcogenides, the TlSe family of 1D chain materials with Zintl-type structure exhibits exotic phenomena under high-pressure. In the present work, we have systematically investigated the high-pressure behavior of TlInTe 2 using Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and transport measurements, in combination with crystal structure prediction (CSP) based on the evolutionary approach and first principles calculations. We found that TlInTe$_2$ undergoes a pressure driven semiconductor to semimetal transition at 4 GPa, followed by a superconducting transition at 5.7 GPa (with Tc = 3.8 K) induced by a Lifshitz transition. The Lifshitz transition is initiated by the appearance of new electron pockets on the Fermi surface, which evolve with pressure and connect to the adjacent electron pockets forming an umbrella shaped Fermi surface at the top and bottom of the Brillouin zone. An unusual giant phonon softening (Ag mode) concomitant with a V-shaped Tc behavior appears at 10-12 GPa as a result of the interaction of optical phonons with the conduction electrons, resulting in Fano line shaped asymmetry in Ag mode. A prominent Tc anomaly concurrent with the Ag mode softening at 19-20 GPa is correlated to the semimetal to metal transition. The CSP calculations reveal that these transitions are not accompanied by any structural phase transitions up to the maximum pressure achieved, 33.5 GPa. Our findings on TlInTe$_2$ open up a new platform to study a plethora of unexplored high pressure novel phenomena in TlSe family induced by Lifshitz transition (electronic driven), phonon softening and electron-phonon coupling.

A Big Data Enabled Channel Model for 5G Wireless Communication Systems

The standardization process of the fifth generation (5G) wireless communications has recently been accelerated and the first commercial 5G services would be provided as early as in 2018. The increasing of enormous smartphones, new complex scenarios, large frequency bands, massive antenna elements, and dense small cells will generate big datasets and bring 5G communications to the era of big data. This paper investigates various applications of big data analytics, especially machine learning algorithms in wireless communications and channel modeling. We propose a big data and machine learning enabled wireless channel model framework. The proposed channel model is based on artificial neural networks (ANNs), including feed-forward neural network (FNN) and radial basis function neural network (RBF-NN). The input parameters are transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) coordinates, Tx-Rx distance, and carrier frequency, while the output parameters are channel statistical properties, including the received power, root mean square (RMS) delay spread (DS), and RMS angle spreads (ASs). Datasets used to train and test the ANNs are collected from both real channel measurements and a geometry based stochastic model (GBSM). Simulation results show good performance and indicate that machine learning algorithms can be powerful analytical tools for future measurement-based wireless channel modeling.
