A Novel 3D Space-Time-Frequency Non-Stationary Channel Model for 6G THz Indoor Communication Systems

Terahertz (THz) communication is now being considered as one of possible technologies for the sixth generation (6G) communication systems. In this paper, a novel three-dimensional (3D) space-time-frequency non-stationary massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model for 6G THz indoor communication systems is proposed. In this geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM), the initialization and evolution of parameters in time, space, and frequency domains are developed to generate the complete channel transfer function (CTF). Based on the proposed model, the correlation functions including time auto-correlation function (ACF), spatial crosscorrelation function (CCF), and frequency correlation function (FCF) are investigated. The results show that the statistical properties of the simulation model match well with those of the theoretical model. The stationary intervals at different frequencies are simulated. The non-stationarity in time, space, and frequency domains is verified by theoretical derivations and simulations.

A Novel Massive MIMO Beam Domain Channel Model

A novel beam domain channel model (BDCM) for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems has been proposed in this paper. The near-field effect and spherical wavefront are firstly assumed in the proposed model, which is different from the conventional BDCM for MIMO based on the far-field effect and plane wavefront assumption. The proposed novel BDCM is the transformation of an existing geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) from the antenna domain into beam domain. The space-time non-stationarity is also modeled in the novel BDCM. Moreover, the comparison of computational complexity for both models is studied. Based on the numerical analysis, comparison of cluster-level statistical properties between the proposed BDCM and existing GBSM has shown that there exists little difference in the space, time, and frequency correlation properties for two models. Also, based on the simulation, coherence bandwidths of the two models in different scenarios are almost the same. The computational complexity of the novel BDCM is much lower than the existing GBSM. It can be observed that the proposed novel BDCM has similar statistical properties to the existing GBSM at the clusterlevel. The proposed BDCM has less complexity and is therefore more convenient for information theory and signal processing research than the conventional GBSMs.

Hyper-Path-Based Representation Learning for Hyper-Networks

Network representation learning has aroused widespread interests in recent years. While most of the existing methods deal with edges as pairwise relationships, only a few studies have been proposed for hyper-networks to capture more complicated tuplewise relationships among multiple nodes. A hyper-network is a network where each edge, called hyperedge, connects an arbitrary number of nodes. Different from conventional networks, hyper-networks have certain degrees of indecomposability such that the nodes in a subset of a hyperedge may not possess a strong relationship. That is the main reason why traditional algorithms fail in learning representations in hyper-networks by simply decomposing hyperedges into pairwise relationships. In this paper, we firstly define a metric to depict the degrees of indecomposability for hyper-networks. Then we propose a new concept called hyper-path and design hyper-path-based random walks to preserve the structural information of hyper-networks according to the analysis of the indecomposability. Then a carefully designed algorithm, Hyper-gram, utilizes these random walks to capture both pairwise relationships and tuplewise relationships in the whole hyper-networks. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments on several real-world datasets covering the tasks of link prediction and hyper-network reconstruction, and results demonstrate the rationality, validity, and effectiveness of our methods compared with those existing state-of-the-art models designed for conventional networks or hyper-networks.

Adaptive Leader-Following Consensus for Multiple Euler-Lagrange Systems with an Uncertain Leader System

In this paper, we study the leader-following consensus problem of multiple Euler-Lagrange systems subject to an uncertain leader system. We first establish an adaptive distributed observer for a neutrally stable linear leader system whose system matrix is not known exactly. Under standard assumptions, this adaptive distributed observer can estimate and pass the leader's state to each follower through the communication network of the system without knowing the leader's system matrix exactly. Under the additional assumption that the leader's state is persistently exciting, this adaptive distributed observer can also asymptotically learn the parameters of the leader's system matrix. On the basis of this adaptive distributed observer, we further synthesize an adaptive distributed control law to solve our problem via the certainty equivalence principle. Our result allows the leader-following consensus problem of multiple Euler-Lagrange systems to be solved even if none of the followers knows the system matrix of the leader system exactly.

Implementation of on-chip multi-channel focusing wavelength demultiplexing with regularized digital metamaterials

Adiabatic waveguide taper and on-chip wavelength demultiplexer are the key components of photonic integrated circuits. However, these two kinds of devices which designed by traditional semi-analytic methods or brute-force search methods usually have large size. Here, based on regularized digital metamaterials, we have designed, fabricated and characterized a two-channel focused wavelength demultiplexer with a footprint of 2.4 x 10 um2. The designed demultiplexer can directly connect to a grating coupler under the absence of an adiabatic waveguide taper. The objective first method and modified steepest descent method are used to design the demultiplexer which splits 1520 nm and 1580 nm light from a 10-um-wide input waveguide into two 0.48-um-wide output waveguides. Experimental results show that the insertion loss of the upper (lower) channel of the demultiplexer is -1.77 dB (-2.10 dB) and the crosstalk is -25.17 dB (-12.14 dB). Besides, the simulation results indicate that the fabrication tolerance of our devices can reach 20 nm in etching depth and 10 nm in plane size changing. Benefit From the extensibility of our design method, we can design other types of ultra-compact 'focused' devices, like mode splitters, mode converters and power splitters, and we can also design devices with more complicated functionalities, for example, we have designed a three-channel focused wavelength demultiplexer.

All-optical switch and logic gates based on all-dielectric hybrid silicon-Ge2Sb2Te5 metamaterials

We numerically propose an all-dielectric hybrid metamaterial (MM) to realize all-optical switch and logic gates in shortwave infrared (SWIR) band. Such MM consists of one silicon rod and one Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) rod pair. Utilizing the transition from amorphous to crystalline state of GST, such MM can produce electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) analogue with active control. Based on this, we realized all-optical switching at 1500 nm with a modulation depth 84%. Besides, three different logic gates, NOT, NOR and OR, can also be achieved in this device simultaneously. Thanks to the reversible and fast phase transition process of GST, this device possesses reconfigurable ability as well as fast response time, and has potential applications in future optical networks.

Chipscale plasmonic modulators and switches based on metal-insulator-metal waveguides with Ge2Sb2Te5

We introduce phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) into metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide systems to realize chipscale plasmonic modulators and switches in the telecommunication band. Benefitting from the high contrast of optical properties between amorphous and crystalline GST, the three proposed structures can act as reconfigurable and non-volatile modulators and switches with excellent modulation depth 14 dB and fast response time in nanosecond, meanwhile possessing small footprints, simple frameworks and easy fabrication. This work provides new solutions to design active devices in MIM waveguide systems, and can find potential applications in more compact all-optical circuits for information processing and storage.

Actively tunable terahertz electromagnetically induced transparency analogue based on vanadium-oxide-assisted metamaterials

Recently, phase-change materials (PCMs) have drawn more attention due to the dynamically tunable optical properties. Here, we investigate the active control of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) analogue based on terahertz (THz) metamaterials integrated with vanadium oxide (VO2). Utilizing the insulator-to-metal transition of VO2, the amplitude of EIT peak can be actively modulated with a significant modulation depth. Meanwhile the group delay within the transparent window can also be dynamically tuned, achieving the active control of slow light effect. Furthermore, we also introduce independently tunable transparent peaks as well as group delay based on a double-peak EIT with good tuning performance. Finally, based on broadband EIT, the active tuning of quality factor of the EIT peak is also realized. This work introduces active EIT control with more degree of freedom by employing VO2, and can find potential applications in future wireless and ultrafast THz communication systems as multi-channel filters, switches, spacers, logic gates and modulators.

A plasmonic ellipse resonator possessing hybrid modes for ultracompact chipscale application

We propose a plasmonic ellipse resonator possessing hybrid modes based on metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide system. Specially, this nanocavity has hybrid characteristic of rectangle and disk resonator, therefore supporting both Fabry-Perot modes (FPMs) and whispering-gallery modes (WGMs). Besides, by changing the length of major and minor radius of the ellipse, the resonant wavelengths of FPMs and WGMs can be independently tuned and close to each other, thus constructing a plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) - like spectrum profile. Benefitting from this, a dual-band slow light is achieved with one single resonator. Furthermore, this component can also act as a multi-band color filter and refractive index sensor. We believe such multi-mode resonator with ultra-small footprint will play an important role in more compact on-chip optical circuits in the future.

On-chip broadband plasmon-induced transparency based on plasmonic metal-insulator-metal waveguides

As an analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) has been realized both in plasmonic metamaterial and waveguide structures. Via near-field coupling within unit cells, PIT with broadband could be produced by plasmonic metamaterials, which, however, has not been realized in on-chip plasmonic waveguide structures. Here, we introduce broadband PIT based on a plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide system. Utilizing the direct coupling structure, PIT emerges based on an easy-fabricated structure without gap. By tuning coupling distance, the transparent window can be continuously tuned from narrow- to broadband. Such device is promising for on-chip applications on sensing, filtering and slow light over a broad frequency range.

Hybridization-induced resonances with high quality factor in a plasmonic concentric ring-disk nanocavity

Plasmonic resonators have drawn more attention due to the ability to confine light into subwavelength scale. However, they always suffer from a low quality (Q) factor owing to the intrinsic loss of metal. Here, we numerically propose a plasmonic resonator with ultra-high Q factor based on plasmonic metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide structures. The resonator consists of a disk cavity surrounded by a concentric ring cavity, possessing an ultra-small volume. Arising from the plasmon hybridization between plasmon modes in the disk and ring cavity, the induced bonding hybridized modes have ultra-narrow full wave at half maximum (FWHM) as well as ultra-high Q factors. The FWHM can be nearly 1 nm and Q factor can be more than 400. Furthermore, such device can act as a refractive index sensor with ultra-high figure of merit (FOM). This work provides a novel approach to design plasmonic high-Q-factor resonators, and has potential on-chip applications such as filters, sensors and nanolasers.

Discrete-Time Distributed Observers over Jointly Connected Switching Networks and an Application

In this paper, we first establish an exponential stability result for a class of linear switched systems and then apply this result to show the existence of the distributed observer for a discrete-time leader system over jointly connected switching networks. A special case of this result leads to the solution of a leader-following consensus problem of multiple discrete-time double-integrator systems over jointly connected switching networks. Then, we further develop the adaptive distributed observer for the discrete-time leader system over jointly connected switching networks, which has the advantage over the distributed observer in that it does not require that every follower know the system matrix of the leader system. As an application of the discrete-time distributed observer, we will solve the cooperative output regulation problem of a discrete-time linear multi-agent system over jointly connected switching networks. A leader-following formation problem of mobile robots will be used to illustrate our design. This problem cannot be handled by any existing approach.

PIRM Challenge on Perceptual Image Enhancement on Smartphones: Report

This paper reviews the first challenge on efficient perceptual image enhancement with the focus on deploying deep learning models on smartphones. The challenge consisted of two tracks. In the first one, participants were solving the classical image super-resolution problem with a bicubic downscaling factor of 4. The second track was aimed at real-world photo enhancement, and the goal was to map low-quality photos from the iPhone 3GS device to the same photos captured with a DSLR camera. The target metric used in this challenge combined the runtime, PSNR scores and solutions' perceptual results measured in the user study. To ensure the efficiency of the submitted models, we additionally measured their runtime and memory requirements on Android smartphones. The proposed solutions significantly improved baseline results defining the state-of-the-art for image enhancement on smartphones.

Active control of broadband plasmon-induced transparency in terahertz hybrid metal-graphene metamaterial

A hybrid metal-graphene metamaterial (MM) is reported to achieve the active control of the broadband plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) in THz region. The unit cell consists of one cut wire (CW), four U-shape resonators (USRs) and monolayer graphene sheets under the USRs. Via near-field coupling, broadband PIT can be produced through the interference between different modes. Based on different arrangements of graphene positions, not only can we achieve electrically switching the amplitude of broadband PIT, but also can realize modulating the bandwidth of the transparent window. Simultaneously, both the capability and region of slow light can be dynamically tunable. This work provides schemes to manipulate PIT with more degrees of freedom, which will find significant applications in multifunctional THz modulation.

ECD: An Edge Content Delivery and Update Framework in Mobile Edge Computing

This article proposes an edge content delivery framework (ECD) based on mobile edge computing in the era of Internet of Things (IOT), to alleviate the load of the core network and improve the quality of experience (QoE) of mobile users. Considering mobile devices become both the content consumers and providers, and majority of the contents are unnecessary to be uploaded to the cloud datacenter, at the network edge, we deploy a content server to store the raw contents generated from the mobile users, and a cache pool to store the contents that are frequently requested by mobile users in the ECD. The cache pools are ranked and high ranked cache pools will store contents with higher popularity. Furthermore, we propose edge content delivery scheme and edge content update scheme, based on content popularity and cache pool ranking. The content delivery scheme is to efficiently deliver contents to mobile users, while the edge content update scheme is to mitigate the content generated by users to appropriate cache pools based on its request frequently and cache poor ranking. The edge content delivery is completely different from the content delivery network and can further reduce the load on the core network. In addition, because the top ranking cache pools are prioritized for higher priority contents and the cache pools are prioritized for higher priority contents and the cache pools are in proximity to the mobile users, the immediately interactive response between mobile users and cache pools can be achieved. A representative case study of ECD is provided and open research issues are discussed.

Global Robust Practical Output Regulation for Nonlinear Systems in Output Feedback Form by Output-Based Event-Triggered Control

In this paper, we study the event-triggered global robust practical output regulation problem for a class of nonlinear systems in output feedback form with any relative degree. Our approach consists of the following three steps. First, we design an internal model and an observer to form the so-called extended augmented system. Second, we convert the original problem into the event-triggered global robust practical stabilization problem of the extended augmented system. Third, we design an output-based event-triggered control law and a Zeno-free output-based event-triggered mechanism to solve the stabilization problem, which in turn leads to the solvability of the original problem. Finally, we apply our main result to the tracking problem of the controlled hyper-chaotic Lorenz systems.

Cooperative Global Robust Output Regulation for a Class of Nonlinear Multi-Agent Systems by Distributed Event-Triggered Control

This paper studies the event-triggered cooperative global robust output regulation problem for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems via a distributed internal model design. We show that our problem can be solved practically in the sense that the ultimate bound of the tracking error can be made arbitrarily small by adjusting a design parameter in the proposed event-triggered mechanism. Our result offers a few new features. First, our control law is robust against both external disturbances and parameter uncertainties, which are allowed to belong to some arbitrarily large prescribed compact sets. Second, the nonlinear functions in our system do not need to satisfy the global Lipchitz condition. Thus our systems are general enough to include some benchmark nonlinear systems that cannot be handled by existing approaches. Finally, our control law is a specific distributed output-based event-triggered control law, which lends itself to a direct digital implementation.

Event-Triggered Cooperative Robust Practical Output Regulation for a Class of Linear Multi-Agent Systems

In this paper, we consider the event-triggered cooperative robust practical output regulation problem for a class of linear minimum-phase multi-agent systems. We first convert our problem into the cooperative robust practical stabilization problem of a well defined augmented system Based on the distributed internal model approach. Then, we design a distributed event-triggered output feedback control law together with a distributed output-based event-triggered mechanism to stabilize the augmented system, which leads to the solvability of the cooperative robust practical output regulation problem of the original plant. Our distributed control law can be directly implemented in a digital platform provided that the distributed triggering mechanism can monitor the continuous-time output information from neighboring agents. Finally, we illustrate our design by an example.
