Interference Effect of Majorana Fermions in a Spin-orbit Coupled Superconducting Wire

Two majorana Fermions (MFs) localized at the two ends of the topological superconducting wire can interfere with each other and form the well known $4π$ Josephson current. We reveal that the density of states (Dos) for the electron part and the hole part also follow a parity correlated $4π$ period oscillation, while the Dos displays a $2π$ period oscillation when two trivial states interfere with each other. Thus, the period of Dos oscillation can be used to distinguish the MFs from the trivial localized states. Interestingly, such phenomena can be directly observed in a short superconducting wire controlled by the gate voltage. This largely simplifies the experimental setup. We suggest that the interference effects can be detected through two STM leads or two norm leads.

Distributed Load Management Algorithms in Anycast-based CDNs

Anycast is an internet addressing protocol where multiple hosts share the same IP-address. A popular architecture for modern Content Distribution Networks (CDNs) for geo-replicated services consists of multiple layers of proxy nodes for service and co-located DNS-servers for load-balancing among different proxies. Both the proxies and the DNS-servers use anycast addressing, which offers simplicity of design and high availability of service at the cost of partial loss of routing control. Due to the very nature of anycast, redirection actions by a DNS-server also affects loads at nearby proxies in the network. This makes the problem of optimal distributed load management highly challenging. In this paper, we propose and evaluate an analytical framework to formulate and solve the load-management problem in this context. We consider two distinct algorithms. In the first half of the paper, we pose the load-management problem as a convex optimization problem. Following a Kelly-type dual decomposition technique, we propose a fully-distributed load-management algorithm by introducing FastControl packets. This algorithm utilizes the underlying anycast mechanism itself to enable effective coordination among the nodes, thus obviating the need for any external control channel. In the second half of the paper, we consider an alternative greedy load-management heuristic, currently in production in a major commercial CDN. We study its dynamical characteristics and analytically identify its operational and stability properties. Finally, we critically evaluate both the algorithms and explore their optimality-vs-complexity trade-off using trace-driven simulations.

Monte Carlo Predictions of Proton SEE Cross-Sections from Heavy Ion Test Data

The limits of previous methods promote us to design a new approach (named PRESTAGE) to predict proton single event effect (SEE) cross-sections using heavy-ion test data. To more realistically simulate the SEE mechanisms, we adopt Geant4 and the location-dependent strategy to describe the physics processes and the sensitivity of the device. Cross-sections predicted by PRESTAGE for over twenty devices are compared with the measured data. Evidences show that PRESTAGE can calculate not only single event upsets induced by proton indirect ionization, but also direct ionization effects and single event latch-ups. Most of the PRESTAGE calculated results agree with the experimental data within a factor of 2-3.

Rhodium Nanoparticles for Ultraviolet Plasmonics

The non-oxidizing catalytic noble metal rhodium is introduced for ultraviolet plasmonics. Planar tripods of 8 nm Rh nanoparticles, synthesized by a modified polyol reduction method, have a calculated local surface plasmon resonance near 330 nm. By attaching p-aminothiophenol, local field-enhanced Raman spectra and accelerated photo-damage were observed under near-resonant ultraviolet illumination, while charge transfer simultaneously increased fluorescence for up to 13 minutes. The combined local field enhancement and charge transfer demonstrate essential steps toward plasmonically-enhanced ultraviolet photocatalysis.

Mini-Batch Semi-Stochastic Gradient Descent in the Proximal Setting

We propose mS2GD: a method incorporating a mini-batching scheme for improving the theoretical complexity and practical performance of semi-stochastic gradient descent (S2GD). We consider the problem of minimizing a strongly convex function represented as the sum of an average of a large number of smooth convex functions, and a simple nonsmooth convex regularizer. Our method first performs a deterministic step (computation of the gradient of the objective function at the starting point), followed by a large number of stochastic steps. The process is repeated a few times with the last iterate becoming the new starting point. The novelty of our method is in introduction of mini-batching into the computation of stochastic steps. In each step, instead of choosing a single function, we sample $b$ functions, compute their gradients, and compute the direction based on this. We analyze the complexity of the method and show that it benefits from two speedup effects. First, we prove that as long as $b$ is below a certain threshold, we can reach any predefined accuracy with less overall work than without mini-batching. Second, our mini-batching scheme admits a simple parallel implementation, and hence is suitable for further acceleration by parallelization.

New fast divide-and-conquer algorithms for the symmetric tridiagonal eigenvalue problem

In this paper, two accelerated divide-and-conquer algorithms are proposed for the symmetric tridiagonal eigenvalue problem, which cost $O(N^2r)$ {flops} in the worst case, where $N$ is the dimension of the matrix and $r$ is a modest number depending on the distribution of eigenvalues. Both of these algorithms use hierarchically semiseparable (HSS) matrices to approximate some intermediate eigenvector matrices which are Cauchy-like matrices and are off-diagonally low-rank. The difference of these two versions lies in using different HSS construction algorithms, one (denoted by {ADC1}) uses a structured low-rank approximation method and the other ({ADC2}) uses a randomized HSS construction algorithm. For the ADC2 algorithm, a method is proposed to estimate the off-diagonal rank. Numerous experiments have been done to show their stability and efficiency. These algorithms are implemented in parallel in a shared memory environment, and some parallel implementation details are included. Comparing the ADCs with highly optimized multithreaded libraries such as Intel MKL, we find that ADCs could be more than 6x times faster for some large matrices with few deflations.

Beam Position Reconstruction for the g2p Experiment in Hall A at Jefferson Lab

Beam-line equipment was upgraded for experiment E08-027 (g2p) in Hall A at Jefferson Lab. Two beam position monitors (BPMs) were necessary to measure the beam position and angle at the target. A new BPM receiver was designed and built to handle the low beam currents (50-100 nA) used for this experiment. Two new super-harps were installed for calibrating the BPMs. In addition to the existing fast raster system, a slow raster system was installed. Before and during the experiment, these new devices were tested and debugged, and their performance was also evaluated. In order to achieve the required accuracy (1-2 mm in position and 1-2 mrad in angle at the target location), the data of the BPMs and harps were carefully analyzed, as well as reconstructing the beam position and angle event by event at the target location. The calculated beam position will be used in the data analysis to accurately determine the kinematics for each event.

Implementation and verification of different ECC mitigation designs for BRAMs in flash-based FPGAs

Embedded RAM blocks (BRAMs) in field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are susceptible to single event effects (SEEs) induced by environmental factors such as cosmic rays, heavy ions, alpha particles and so on. As technology scales, the issue will be more serious. In order to tackle this issue, two different error correcting codes (ECCs), the shortened Hamming codes and shortened BCH codes, are investigated in this paper. The concrete design methods of the codes are presented. Also, the codes are both implemented in flash-based FPGAs. Finally, the synthesis report and simulation results are presented in the paper. Moreover, the heavy-ion experiments are performed, the experimental results indicate that the error cross-section using the shortened Hamming codes can be reduced by two orders of magnitude compared with the device without mitigation, and no errors are discovered in the experiments for the device using the shortened BCH codes.

Landau damping effects in the synchronization of conformist and contrarian oscillators

Two decades ago, a phenomenon resembling Landau damping was described in the synchronization of globally coupled oscillators: the evidence of a regime where the order parameter decays when linear theory predicts neutral stability for the incoherent state. We here show that such an effect is far more generic, as soon as phase oscillators couple to their mean field according to their natural frequencies, being then grouped into two distinct populations of conformists and contrarians. We report the analytical solution of this latter situation, which allows determining the critical coupling strength and the stability of the incoherent state, together with extensive numerical simulations that fully support all theoretical predictions. The relevance of our results is discussed in relationship to collective phenomena occurring in polarized social systems.

Pump Electron-Positron Pairs from Potential Well

In this paper we show that electron-positron pairs can be pumped inexhaustibly with a constant production rate from the one dimensional potential well with oscillating depth or width. Bound states embedded in the the Dirac sea can be pulled out and pushed to the positive continuum, and become scattering states. Pauli block, which dominant the saturation of pair creation in the static super-critical potential well, can be broken by the ejection of electrons. We find that the width oscillating mode is more efficient that the depth oscillating mode. In the adiabatic limit, pair number as a function of upper boundary of the oscillating, will reveal the diving of the bound states.

Chaoticity and Coherence in Bose-Einstein Condensation and Correlations

We review the properties of chaoticity and coherence in Bose-Einstein condensation and correlations, for a dense boson system in its mean-field represented approximately by a harmonic oscillator potential. The order parameter and the nature of the phase transition from the chaotic to the condensate states are studied for different fixed numbers of bosons. The two-particle correlation function in momentum space is calculated to investigate how the Bose-Einstein correlation depends on the degree of condensation and other momentum variables. We generalize the Bose-Einstein correlation analysis to three-particle correlations to show its dependence on the degree of condensation.

Rogue-wave solutions of a three-component coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation

We investigate rogue-wave solutions in a three-component coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation. With certain requirements on the backgrounds of components, we construct a multi-rogue-wave solution that exhibits a structure like a four-petaled flower in temporal-spatial distribution, in contrast to the eye-shaped structure in one-component or two-component systems. The results could be of interest in such diverse fields as Bose-Einstein condensates, nonlinear fibers, and superfluids.

Localized nonlinear waves in a two-mode nonlinear fiber

We find that diverse nonlinear waves, such as soliton, Akhmediev breather, and rogue waves (RWs), can emerge and interplay with each other in a two-mode coupled system. It provides a good platform to study interaction between different kinds of nonlinear waves. In particular, we obtain dark RWs analytically for the first time in the coupled system, and find that two RWs can appear in the temporal-spatial distribution. Possible ways to observe these nonlinear waves are discussed.

Planar Visibility Graph Network Algorithm For Two Dimensional Timeseries

In this brief paper, a simple and fast computational method, the Planar Visibility Graph Networks Algorithm was proposed based on the famous Visibility Graph Algorithm, which can fulfill converting two dimensional timeseries into a planar graph. The constructed planar graph inherits several properties of the series in its structure. Thereby, periodic series, random series, and chaotic series convert into quite different networks with different average degree, characteristic path length, diameter, clustering coefficient, different degree distribution, and modularity, etc. By means of this new approach, with such different networks measures, one can characterize two dimensional timeseries from a new viewpoint of complex networks.

A novel hohlraum with ultrathin depleted-uranium-nitride coating layer for low hard x-ray emission and high radiation temperature

An ultra-thin layer of uranium nitrides (UN) has been coated on the inner surface of the depleted uranium hohlraum (DUH), which has been proved by our experiment can prevent the oxidization of Uranium (U) effectively. Comparative experiments between the novel depleted uranium hohlraum and pure golden (Au) hohlraum are implemented on Shenguang III prototype laser facility. Under the laser intensity of 6*10^14 W/cm2, we observe that, the hard x-ray (> 1.8 keV) fraction of this uranium hohlraum decreases by 61% and the peak intensity of total x-ray flux (0.1 keV ~ 5.0 keV) increases by 5%. Radiation hydrodynamic code LARED is used to interpret the above observations. Our result for the first time indicates the advantage of the UN-coated DUH in generating the uniform x-ray field with a quasi Planckian spectrum and thus has important implications in optimizing the ignition hohlraum design.

An embryo of protocell membrane: The capsule of graphene oxide

Many signs indicate that the graphene could widely occur on the early Earth. Here, we report a new theory that graphene might be an embryo of protocell membrane, and found several evidences. Firstly, the graphene oxide and phospholipid-graphene oxide composite would curl into capsules in strongly acidic saturated solution of Pb(NO3)2 at low temperature, providing a protective space for biochemical reactions. Secondly, L-animi acids exhibit higher reactivity than D-animi acids for graphene oxides in favor of the formation of left-handed proteins. Thirdly, monolayer graphene with nanopores prepared by unfocused 84Kr25+ has high selectivity for permeation of the monovalent metal ions (Rb+ > K+ > Cs+ > Na+ > Li+), but does not allow Cl- through, which could be attributed to the ion exchange of oxygen-containing groups on the rim of nanopores. It is similar to K+ channels, which would cause efflux of some ions from capsule of graphene oxides with the decrease of pH in the primitive ocean, creating a suitable inner condition for the origin of life. Consequently, the strongly acidic, high salinity and strong radiation as well as temperature changes in the early Earth, regarded as negative factors, would be indispensable for the origin of protocell. In short, graphene bred life, but digested gradually by the evolution.
